OKTOBERFEST CANCELLED

Due to much nervousness about Covid-19 and the financial and employment problems, we have made the decision to cancel this years’ Oktoberfest. The Eagan family and Dinges family have agreed to chair and co-chair next year. Since the bazaar brings in over $100,000 every year, we count of this in the parish budget. If you can make a donation of what you may have spent at the bizarre, that could help us along the way.

ICC FALL FESTIVAL CANCELLED

Due to so many events being cancelled in the area and the difficulty in safely putting on an event of this size, we have decided to cancel this years’ festival. Pat and Charles Balke have agreed to head things up next year. In lieu of the profits of about $20,000 that we will lose this year, if you are able to donate what you would have spent, we would appreciate it.

Love is the key to the mystery. Love by its very nature is not selfish,

but generous. It seeks not its own, but the good of others.

The measure of love is not the pleasure it gives - that is the way the

world judges it - but the joy and peace it can purchase for others.

Finding Peace

If you want peace, work for justice. - Pope Paul VI

Be Signs of Unity Amid Diversity

This year the Catholic Press Association (CPA) is holding a virtual Catholic Media Conference, due to the Coronavirus pandemic. In his message to the conference, Pope Francis expressed his closeness “to those who have been affected by the virus and to those who, even at the risk of their lives, have worked and continue to work in assisting our brothers and sisters in need.” The theme chosen for this virtual event is “Together While Apart.” The Pope noted how this theme “eloquently expresses the sense of togetherness that emerged, paradoxically, from the experience of social distancing imposed by the pandemic.”

Pope Francis also underlined how “the experience of these past months has shown how essential is the mission of the communications media for bringing people together, shortening distances, providing necessary information, and opening minds and hearts to truth.”

"E pluribus unum – the ideal of unity amid diversity, reflected in the motto of the United States", noted the Pope," must also inspire the service you offer to the common good. How urgently is this needed today, in an age marked by conflicts and polarization from which the Catholic community itself is not immune."

"We need media capable of building bridges, defending life and breaking down the walls, visible and invisible, that prevent sincere dialogue and truthful communication between individuals and communities, he said.”

“We need media", he continued, “that can help people, especially the young, to distinguish good from evil, to develop sound judgments based on a clear and unbiased presentation of the facts, and to understand the importance of working for justice, social concord and respect for our common home.” The Pope also stressed the need for men and women of conviction “who protect communication from all that would distort it or bend it to other purposes.”

Listen to Catholic Radio

We are blessed to have a Catholic radio station nearby. The Guadalupe Radio Network station in Houston is at 1430 on your AM radio. Listen to the station to find encouragement and learn about your Catholic Faith.

Purchase CCSF Cards as Gifts

The Catholic Clerical Student Fund (CCSF) raises funds to be used in the education of young men to the Priesthood at St. Mary’s Seminary in Houston. The primary fundraiser are the sale of prayer cards, which make great Christmas or birthday gifts. To purchase cards, Sts. Peter & Paul parishioners can contact Jackie Stewart and Immaculate Conception parishioners can contact Cecilia Vasicek.

Time to Laugh

A priest parked his car in a no-parking zone in a large city because he was short of time and could not find a space with a meter. Then he put a note under the windshield wiper that read: “I have circled the block 10 times. If I do not park here, I will miss my appointment. Forgive us our trespasses.” When he returned, he found a citation from a police officer along with this note “I have circled this block for 10 years. If I do not give you a ticket I will lose my job. Lead us not into temptation.”

Saints and Special Observances

Sunday: Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Wednesday: St. Augustine Zhao Rong, Priest, and Companions, Martyrs Friday: St. Benedict, Abbot, Patron of Europe Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary

St. Benedict and Monastic Life

The system of monastic life that St. Benedict developed spread centers of prayer and hospitality throughout Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire. His monasteries were not only spiritual and cultural centers, but also a source of sustenance and relief for pilgrims and the poor. Benedict’s Rule is a manual for monastic life. Written in a familiar style, Benedict throughout the prologue and 73 chapters of the Rule exhorts his monks to reach out with “the ear of the heart” to “never despair of the mercy of God.”

“Idleness,” writes St. Benedict in the Rule, “is an enemy of the soul; That is why the brothers have to devote themselves to manual work and to reading books containing the word of God.” Prayer and work are not in opposition, but establish a

symbiotic relationship. Without prayer, it is not possible to encounter God. Work is an extension of prayer. “The Lord,” St. Benedict reminds us, “expects us daily to respond with facts to the doctrines of his holy teachings.”

Setting Aside the Weapons of War

Why, we might ask the prophet Zechariah today, would God want to banish chariots and horses? The answer follows: because they are used to violate God’s reign of peace, along

with the warrior’s bow. In the days of Zechariah, chariots and horses were high-priced items used only for war-making. They were the aircraft carriers and nuclear missiles of his day. And for his culture, which thought of any king as being a military leader first and foremost, a king riding on a lowly beast of burden to proclaim peace without horses, chariots, and bows would have set his listeners topsy-turvy.

This lowly, beast-riding king of peace, we believe, was fulfilled in Jesus, gentle and humble of heart. In a world torn by military strife often generated by differing religious views, and even in our own lives and homes where we are often at “war” over the tiniest things, we would do well to stop and consider to what degree we are willing to be like that “king” whose way of gentleness and humility is the way for us to find rest for our weary souls.

Treasures from Our Tradition

Confirmation is complicated, at least in its history. It arose in response to real problems deeply felt, not the least of which was the desire of the bishop to minister to all who were baptized. But it also has to do with the early crisis of how to deal with persons baptized by congregations that had broken bonds with the greater church: heretics. People reasoned that no matter how wrong-headed the minister might be, Christ would always work in the waters of baptism. No matter what, God would sweep aside all human obstacles to claim the new life in the water. They were not so sure about the ability of someone who had broken with the church to confer the Spirit.

By the fifth century, already-baptized persons coming into the church were anointed with chrism but not rebaptized. This anointing with myron or chrism was seen as an act of reconciliation by the church, and a seal upon the commitments vowed by the newcomer. Today, we preserve this ancient practice by never “rebaptizing” Christians who have been baptized in water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We affirm the candidates’ baptismal dignity, and we celebrate confirmation at their first reception of the Eucharist.
