Knowing the Truth: Five Attitudes True Believers Should Exhibit in Their Lives

1 John 3:19-24

• How have you been doing in the area of loving one another, especially those who seem unlovable right now to you? ________________________________________________________________

• Are you contributing to being a part of the winning team, or are you causing harm to others by gossiping, putting others down, or just thinking of yourself? _______________________________

• Do you make decisions that are good for only you or for the good of the team, youth group, church, etc? ____________________________________________________________________

1 John 3:19-24, “By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him;20 for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything. 21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; 22 and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. 23 And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. 24 Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.”

1. A believer should exhibit gratitude for God’s grace. (19-20) 1 John 3:19-20, “By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; 20 for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.”

Psalm 19:7-9, “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; 8 the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; 9 the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether.”

Luke 11:28, “But he (Jesus) said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

John 8:31-32, “So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Hebrews 9:14, “how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.”

Hebrews 10:22, “having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience”

Romans 8:1, “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

• What is your conscience warning you about? What should you do when you are being warned? _______________________________________________________________________________ • Is God’s Word the standard by which you decide what is right and wrong or is it from a worldly

standard of lies? If it’s not God’s Word, what are you going to do to change that? _____________ _______________________________________________________________________________ • Do you struggle with false guilt and shame because of forgetting that you have been made

righteous? _____________________________________________________________________ • Are you ready to stand before God right now with complete assurance of your salvation? If not,

what needs to happen? ___________________________________________________________ • As a believer, is what you profess the same as what you actually practice? If not, what can you do

to make that change? ____________________________________________________________ • Are you exhibiting gratitude for God’s grace? If not, how can you start to make that happen? ____ _______________________________________________________________________________

2. A believer should exhibit boldness in prayer. (21-22a) 1 John 3:21-22a, “Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; 22 and whatever we ask we receive from him,”

Ephesians 3:12, in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him.”

Hebrews 4:16, “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

John 14:13-14, “Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.”

Philippians 4:19, “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

• What is your prayer life like? _______________________________________________________ • Are you praying according to God’s will or for what you want? _____________________________ • Is there boldness or confidence when you pray? _______________________________________ • Are you trusting God to answer your prayers? _________________________________________ • What are some hindrances that keep you from praying? _________________________________

3. A believer should exhibit submission to God’s commands. (22b) 1 John 3:22b, “because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him.”

John 15:7-10, “If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love.”

John 14:15, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”

James 1:22, “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”

Hebrews 13:20-21, “Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, 21 equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.”

• How are you doing with obeying God’s commands? Is it out of love, legalism or selfish ambition? _______________________________________________________________________________ • Are you living a life that is pleasing to God? If not, then why not? __________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ • Do you recognize that God has placed you where you are at school, your job or your team to show

others what God is like in your life by being faithful to Him and His Word?

4. A believer should exhibit faith in Jesus Christ. (23) 1 John 3:23, “And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us.

Philippians 2:9–11, “Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

• Are you living a life of faith, love and an eagerness to obey God because you believe in His name? ________________________________________________________________________

• How are you doing with obeying God to love others even when they don’t deserve it? __________ • Is the love you are showing a sacrificial love? If not, what can you do to make it that? __________ _______________________________________________________________________________

5. A believer should exhibit appreciation for the Holy Spirit’s power in their life. (24) 1 John 3:24, “Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.”

John 3:8, “The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

• Do you sense the Holy Spirit’s power in your life? If so, do you appreciate this power He has given you? _________________________________________________________________________

• Are you keeping God’s commandments? If so, are you abiding in God? _____________________ _______________________________________________________________________________

Think About It: • As a believer, how are you doing at exhibiting these five attitudes? _________________________ • Which ones do you need to focus on to do better at? ____________________________________
