HigH Pointes 2 november 2010

Fellow South Parents,It has certainly been a busy start to the school year! Homecoming 2010 was a huge success and continues to be a great tradition at South. I spent much of the week in awe of the many talented and energetic students who created beautiful banners, colorful and creative posters, majestic floats, imaginative spirit rocks and outrageously fun spirit day attire. The activities and parade went off so smoothly, due in large part to the many parent volunteers and staff who helped throughout the week. Thanks again to our parent Homecoming chairs, Roxanne Flaska and Sara Declerq, for all their work in making it a memorable week.

A HUGE thank you goes to our parent class sponsors who put in innumerable hours!

Senior Class Sponsors: Rick Cardoze, Doug and Diane Dossin, John and Cynthia Sohn, Phil and Karen Horn, John and Megan Hughes, Chip and Suzy Bershback, Kurt and Polly Tech, Ed and Leslie Wizner, Paul and Ann Wilkins, and John and Patti Willard. Float Home: Mary Kay and Dan Gallagher.

Junior Class Sponsors: Pete and Patty Groezinger, Tony and Susan Griffin, Chris and Bridgette Murray, John and Kelee Teodecki, Peter and Melissa Wenzler, Don and Bette Wisniowiecki, and Ed and Carol Jackman. Float Home: Jackie Dettloff. Poster Home: Portia and Jim Reimer.

Sophomore Class Sponsors: Tom and Betsy Enders, Ged and Tammy Duffield, John and Didi DeBoer, Vince and Jill Bommarito, Chris and Lisa Mackey Float Home: Tom and Betsy Enders.

Freshmen Class Sponsors: Carrie and Tony Zak, Janet and Bill Ventimiglia, Debbie and John Caputo, Robyn and John Daley, Clarisa and Kevin Piecuch, and Cristi and Bill Henderson Float Home: Carrie and Tony Zak.

Thanks also to the many parents who chaperoned the dance, drove convertibles in the parade, supplied food and drinks to hungry float builders and helped with Spirit Day in the early hours of the morning.

Many faculty and staff members at South devote countless hours of their time to Homecoming as well, especially Student Activities Director Tina Mayk and Faculty Class Sponsors Laura Distelrath, Marianne Vukas, Kristie Philliben, Jenna Kuess, and Carrie Haliburton. We are grateful for their dedication and generosity in working with our kids. And, while you all know how wonderful our teachers are in the classroom, they showed they are truly multi-talented and spirited by performing a sensational dance rendition to the rousing cheers of the students at the Pep Rally on Friday!

Along with Homecoming, Back to School Night was an informative and well organized evening, with refreshments provided by our Hospitality committee and chairs, Tammy Browning and Lillian Cusumano. The school store was open for parents to browse and shop, thanks to the efforts of John Smith, Julia Hoffman, Kathie Harness and our alumni parents who staffed it for the night.

Our next General Membership meeting is in the evening on Tuesday, November 9 at 7 p.m. in the Student Commons. I hope you will join us and plan to come early for the Parent-Principal Coffee at 6 p.m.

Pamela [email protected]

Homecoming 2010 was once again a success due to all of the time and effort contributed by parents and students. The refreshment room was filled this year and we would like to thank all of the volunteers who worked tirelessly filling and replenishing food and drink. Thank you to Kathy Harness, Mike Webb, Karen and Doug Muniga, Ann Ma-rie Aliotta, Keith and Sara Newell, Peri Craig, Al DeClercq, Savannah, Luke and Helen Srebernak.

We would also like to thank the Phil Pitters Company for their unending generosity and continuing service in storing the Mothers Club Home-coming trailers for us. This dona-tion of space in storing the trailers in the off season is something that we could not have done without their help. Once again it takes many people to make Homecoming happen and the Pitters Company is one of them. Thank you.

Roxanne Flaska, Sara DeClercq - Homecoming Chairs

Counselors

Corner

COUNSELORS’ CORNER

Note: Christmas Break begins after the last class on December 17th.

Senior ParentSWe want to alert you to the fact that your seniors who want college applications processed before the holiday vacation must have them turned in by Wednesday, December 1st. This includes all applications with deadlines on or before January 15.

We also want you to know that we are anxious to talk with seniors who are still undecided about college or other post graduation choices. Please encourage your student to make an appointment to see their counselor if they are in this situation. It is definitely not too late to start the planning process if they have been undecided up to this time.

All parents: We would like to remind you that if you have a question or concern about a class or grade in a particular class, we encourage you to contact the teacher directly via their email or their direct phone number. Both of these can be found for most teachers in the Mothers’ Club calendar. For all teachers, you can also retrieve email addresses at the South website which you can access at: http://south.gpschools.org. Any problem that may not be resolved via the direct teacher contact can certainly be referred to us, but the conversation with the teacher should take place first.

Junior ParentSWe met with your students on September 28th to discuss college planning, testing, the importance of the junior year, etc. The Power Point presentation is available online for your viewing. Go to http://south.gpschools.org, click on Departments, then Counseling, then South CRC to take you there. All students received a testing calendar with the full list of test dates. The testing calendar is also available online. The MME (Michigan Merit Exam) will take place at South on March1st, 2nd, and 3rd. The first day of testing will include the ACT with Writing. Students will take the ACT test on that date for free. We also encourage students to sign up and take an additional ACT or SAT before the end of their junior year. Grosse Pointe North is the test center we recommend. Macomb Community College and U of D High School are good alternatives as the second choice test center. If they have not already signed up to take an additional test, please have your junior student register online at www.act.org for the ACT or come to the Counseling Center and pick up the appropriate paper application. The South school code that they will need to register is: 231-802. We recommend either April or June test dates.

Students wishing to take the SAT 1 with Writing (and SAT II if required by a college they intend to pursue) should make sure to register soon for their preferred testing dates so they will be assigned to the test center (Grosse Pointe North) of their choice. As with the ACT, students can sign up for multiple test dates now. They do not need to wait until they have taken the test once before registering for a second test. Please go to www.collegeboard.com or to the Counseling Center for more information and the forms for registration. Students can begin testing in December; however, there are dates available in January, March, May, and June. Please remember that students cannot take the SAT I with Writing and the SAT II on the same day. Again, the South school code for the SAT is the same as for the ACT: 231-802.

The Junior Parent Night is planned for December 2nd, 2010 at 7:00 in the Auditorium. You will get more information on that night at a later date and we strongly encourage you to attend.

Junior and Senior ParentSWe encourage your attendance at the November 17th Financial Aid Night. It will be held at Grosse Pointe North at 7:00 P.M in the Performing Arts Center. Information about the different types of financial aid that are available will be presented as well as directions for filling out the FAFSA form which is required by all college financial aid offices. We have an excellent, experienced college financial aid officer coming that night as our guest speaker. Remember senior parents: the FAFSA cannot be submitted until January 1, 2011 at the earliest. We encourage you to file between January 1st and February 15th. It is not too soon, however, to go online and register for a PIN number so that you will be ready to file your FAFSA when the time comes. The website is www.fafsa.ed.gov.

SoPhomore and Junior ParentSWe anticipate that the PSAT scores will be available sometime before the December holiday break. We hope to have more information for the December High Pointes.

A t h l e t i c s RUN THE POINTE RUN-A-THON

… A HUGE SUCCESS!!!

Over 300 runners and walkers participated in the Annual Grosse Pointe South Athletic Booster Club Run the Pointe Run-A-Thon on the Saturday of Homecoming weekend, October 2nd. Participants included GPS athletes, coaches, school board members, community leaders and members, as well as our new athletic director, Jeremy Hawkins. Fifty percent of an athlete's donations will be returned directly to the teams designated on their form. The remaining proceeds will be used to continue the excellence in athletics as we strive to help our coaches and teams in their endeavors. Thank you to all the runners and walkers who participated and raised money for South athletics! Congratulations go to our 10K winners, Mike Flint and Lauren Flint. Mike and Lauren are new residents to our community and received gold medals as well as memberships to the Grosse Pointe Athletic Club. The winners of the 5k race were South students, Pat Rennell and Ivana Kakos. This year's committee consisted of Diane Zedan, John Sohn and Bill Flom. Special thanks for the entire Athletic Booster Club board who supported this event and, to the volunteers who showed up on a chilly and rainy Saturday morning to help. Our girls and boys cross country teams and their assistant coaches volunteered in the starting, timing, set up and clean up of this event and their help was tremendous. This year's Gold Sponsor was Meade Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram. Other sponsors included Women to Women Health Center, Tivoli Graphics, Xerox Corporation, Fresh Farms Market, Zedan Family, Conroy Family, Weiland Family, Trader Joe's, Small Favors Gift Gallery, Einstein’s Bagels, The Salvage Groups, GPAC, Kathleen Gibney, DDS and The Grosse Pointe News. Our sponsors donated over $2,600 and over $3,000 in in-kind donations. Please support these businesses who give back so generously to the South community. The entire event raised over $11,000 for Grosse Pointe South Athletics! Plans are underway for two more fun - fund raising activities. In January, look forward to a Parents Night Out sponsored by the GPS Athletic Booster Club – an evening of fun, food and dancing. And, our final event is the North/South Golf Outing hosted by The Lochmoor Club on Monday, May 9, 2011.
