    A GLIMPSS OF

    IN

    I /

    Dear

    Friends

    TH V NTS

    OF THIS

    P ST

    MONTH have

    made

us long to write to you and give you Just a

    glimpse of our

    own

    family l ife here

    in

Jam^tica. t is truly a time of rejoicing

    for

    a

    l i t t le

    one has

    come into

    our

    home. Little

    Peter as

    we

    named

    him, came

    to

    our

    home

as a surprise and yet after much longing. We have prayed and have seen

    the

    Glory

    of

    the Lord

    as

    He has worked

    aH things

    together

    for

    good.

    Two months

    ago we heard, through friends,

    of

a German couple who had several

    child

    ren and

    who

    did not love them

    and were

    giving

    them

    away. Two other missionary

    cou

    ples had

    taken

    tivo

    of the

    children.

    We

    beoame

    interested

    and decided

    to make

    a

    trip to inquire about

    the

    family.

    Upon

    ar rival in

    Montego

    Bay, we were

    met

    by the

aunt of the chi ldren who had nade a long trip to the hotel with the youngest of the

    family in

    her

    arms.

    She

    did not

    know

    of

    our

    coming,

    but

    told us that

    the

    parents

    had gone

    to

    Canada

    and

    le f t

    the

child with her to give away to someone, perhaps a pass

    ing

    tour is t

    wanting

    a

    v^ite

    ABLE

    Dear Friends,

    Sometimes

    our

human strength is weak and our wisdom fails# But

    i sn t i t

    a wonderful joy to see

    how God

    can take the feeble efforts

    that

    we

    make and use them

    to

    glorify

    himself?

    What a precioub promise

    He

    has

    made to

    us,

    that

    he

    is

    able

    to

    do, eaoceeding abundantly above

Another month has passed in the

    l i t t le

    congregation dji Half-Way

    Tree.

    The

    crowning glory of the

    month

came this past week with the

    baptism of

    Mr

    .

    Tom dam

    an influencial man in the

    city

    here.

    Never

    have we

    seen

    or

    knoi^m

    a man to be more

    thoroughly

    converted from a

life of sin to a glorious

    l ife

    in Christ. He

    is

    a \Aiite

    man

    and

    previously

    moved

    in

    a

    circle

    of Godless

    men

    and

    wtsnen

    of a high society

    class.

    I t

    would have melted your hearts

    to

    see him go down

    into

    town

    into a

    humble

    l i t t le nati^ve

    building

where Jim buried him with his lord

    in

baptism in a pit pool that was

    far

    from desirable.

    Like

    the

    Ethiopian

    of old,

    he went

    his

    way

    rejoicing.

    In this

week that has followed he has spent

    his

    days and hours taJJctog to

    his

    neighbors

    and

    friends

    and

    trying to

    win them

    to Christ. This

    morning

    finds

him at the Seminary building taking classes with the native stu

dents , learning more about the Scriptures,

    On Sunday

    Mr.

    Adam and

    his

wife both came into fellowship, and

    also his

    wife's sister,

    both

    of vrtiom

    were formerly baptized but

    had

    strayed

    away

    from

    the

    Lord.

    With

    three additions,

    we

    are

    now

    able^to

    move ahead with a l i t t le more help. There

    are

    now twelve members

    in

    the congregation.

    Another

attendance record was broken Sunday with 34

    present.

    How we do

    covet your prayers

    that we

    might continue

    to grow.

The weather is growing hotter day by day and we find

    infections

    and illnesses

    more

prevalent. Jim has been i l l with cold

    that

    has

    settled in

    his

back. Johnny ran a high fever a week ago but

    is

    better

    now. He is certainly

    growing

    into

    a fine boy.

    How grateful we are to

    you

    for

    your

    interest

    and encouragement

    to

    JOHNNY LOVES THE

    t

    has been a lmos t

    four

    months

    In these months John

    has learned to

    be a

    Recently Bro

    interested and

    asked to

    be allowed to go

    to every service Each day

    when

    he came

home from school, he would beg to

    take

    a

nap so that he could go to church. In

    all

of the two weeks, he only missed one ser

vice Johnny sat qui^ly during the

    vices and sang nicely

    ll o f th e sweet chor r

    uses

    and

    songs he

    has

    learned to love And.

    every

    day dur ing

    his

    prayer at the table

    he would

    pray

    that ^

God would b le ss th e church and

    help lo ts

will become a Christian before too long

    BILLY

    AND MIKE GO TO CAIMAN

    I t

    was a sad occasion

    for

    the

    boys and

    ,:;irls

    of the

    Half

    Way

    Tree Bible School on

    bhe last Lord's Day

    that

    Billy and Mike

    .^ould be

    there.

    From

    the very begiiifting

    of

    Bible School days,

    Billy

    and Mike had

been faithfully attending and bringing new

    chi ldren

    into

    the group.

Billy's daddy works for the British West

    Indies Airlines

    and

    his company gave him a

    new

    position

    in

    the

    Cayman

    Islands,

    So the

    family had

    to

    move away.

    During

    the. open

    -

    ing

    session of Bible School,

    the

    boys

    ca^

    forward

and s tood before th e

    chi ldren

    \tfhile

    they

    a l l sang a nice farewell

    song

    to

them and prayed that God would

    ivatch over

    t h e i r l i v e s i n

    t h e i r new

    home.

    vThe next

day was a busy one with packing

and moving, and then that nigh t the chiirch

    had a

    lovely farewell

    party

    for

    them

    a t our

    homev

    After

    hymns

    had

    been

    sung

    and

    prayer

    had been offered by many.

    Brother

    Adam, the

boy's daddy, stood up and gave a

    beautiful

    testimony of

    how

    he had found the Lord

    and

    of-what He meant t o

    him. Then

    he to ld th e

    people

    that

    i t

    was his intention and plan

    to

    begin the

    Church

    of

    Christ in Cayman.

    You

    can

    j us t

    imagine

    how

    happy everyone

    was

to hear the good news. The Christians then

    promised

    to pray

    for them and

    to help

    them

    in

    any

    way they could

    for the

    beginning of

    the

church, and the missionaries said that

    they would come and

    hold

    some

    meetings

    to

    help

    them. ^

    In

    the morning, the boys

packed the i r cats, and dog

and parrot , and goldfish in

    cra t es , drove

    to

    the a i r -

and by 7s30 A.M. were up in the

    IT

    PAYS

    TO

    ra YOUNG

    I.IVES TO THE

Just a few weeks after we found

    Andrew

Hackcr and brought him to live witn

    us, he became

    very

    ill.. On a Friday morn

    ing

    he said he

    wanted

    to

    sleep, and know

ing the fun- Andy had been

    having, we

    de

cided that something was very >n7ong. His

    temperature

was high and so we called the

    doctor for there

    was

    a terrible epidemic

    of Polio

    around

    us.

    The

    doctor

    would

    not

    say

it was Polio right av/ay so

    we

    watched

    over

    Andy

    for five days

    while

    he burned

    with fever. Finall^^ on the

    fifth

    day a

    test

    was

    made.

    Andy didn't like the need

    le s

they stuck in his spine at the hospi

    tal

    to sec

    if he

    really had Polio, and

    VQ

    were terribly

    unhappy when the doctor told

    us

    that

    he did have

    i t.

    Andy s neck had

become stiff on th e second day.

    How

    _tne

Christians prayed All of Andy's mssion-

    ary friends wore

    praying

    for him, Jamaican

    Christians

    an d friends a t home were

    ing

    too.

    God

    heard

    them and

    He

    answered.

Andy was sent to the Polio center.

    It

    was a

    most terrible

    thing for

    Mommy

    'n

    Dad

    to have to leave a

    little

    fellow so eick.

    And Mommy

    and

    Andy

    both

    cried^whe^

    nurses

    took him

    away. It

    was

    a O ^

    dark unhappy night and ~

    yet,

    we could remember

    promises

    tha t

    J e s u s

    made a bout

    helping us

    when we

    arein

    trouble

    so we

    trusted

    i i

    The

    next

    morning

    the doctor

    told

    us

    that

    Andy

    was all right.

    The

    tests

    vrere

    mde

    again and there was

    no

    more sign of Polio-

    Andy s

    neck

    was

    not

    stiff anymore. Can

    yo

    imagine how happy

    we all were?

    The doctor

    -said

    they

    didn't

    understand

    it

    but

    we

    did

    We

    a ll

    know that

    Jesus can help--doctors a-

    long without

    them

    even

    knowing

    it .

    Anoy

    stayed

    in the hospital ten

    days so they

    could

    watch

    over him

    to

    well. Do you suppose

    ho

    liked

    that.

    Oh>

he would scream so loud to go home ^

    saw

    us that

    he

    disturbed the

    whole

    hospi -

    ta l

    But the nurses said

    when we were gone

    he was the dearest liotle

    fellow

    there.All

    the nurses

    crowded around him-

    to

    pve

    one

    LITTL

    BOYS

    Dear

    Friends in

    the

    Gospel

    In September

    of 1953 we

    travelled

    to the

    city

    of Montego Bay, having become

    interested

in a German Jamaican sett lement there. The following m orning after o ur arrival we

    were

    approached by a woman who

    wanted

to give away a lovely little boy of two

    and

    a

    half

    years.

    We feel

    that

    you

    would

    have done exactly

    as we didaccepted

    him

    as our own.

    In

    a few

    days we were happily adjusted

    and

    felt a real blessing to

    our

    home. Peter found

    parents

    who wan ted

    h im and

    loved him

In March of this year, we took another step and

    accepted

    an eight year

    old

    boy, John

Gardner into our home. Johnny was forsaken by

    parents

    almost starved imwanted by

    friends

    and

    neighbors, and living

    in

a t iny house with no

    adult

    care. Again we felt that

    you would have

    taken Johnny

    in, too.

    Then

in August, when little Andrew Hacker's mother

so anxiously offered to give him away, we could only thank God for

    another

    l it tle boy

    and

for the opportunity of sheltering him from the curses of his drunken father.

    During the

    months

    of

    t ra ining and

rearing these little boys, the burden of destitute

children in Jamaica ha s weighed heavily upon our hearts. Over and over we have received

appeals from mothers and neighbors who have children or know of children in desperate,

heart-breaking conditions. We are faced with this fundamental fact of true Christian ser

vice of pure religion according to James in the NewTestament:

    that

    it is God's perfect will

    to care

    fo r

    unfortunate neglected children.

    After

    much

    prayer and consultation

    with the

missionaries and with Jamaican friends and

    authorities

we have found a real spi ri t of Christian

    generosity

    toward ou r

    hopes for

    the

    establishment of a Home for

    Boys

    here

    in

    Jamaica.

    THIS HOME WOULD

    BE

A HOME WITH AN EVANGELISTIC PURPOSE: TO REAR

BOYS TO BE PREACHERS CHRISTIAN WORKERS ELDERS AND DEACONS

    IN

    THE

CHURCHES, OR CHRISTIANS IN ANY WALK OF LIFE.

It will be possible for us to shelter at least another four boys in our own home before we

    will need another

    building.

However, we feel th e need now to

    begin

    o ur p lans

    for the

    pur

chase of a piece of land

    and

    a

    permanent

building. This Home already has become a small

reality within the walls of our own home. We need your prayers, interest, and encourage

ment now, to help this HOME to grow into a greater haven of protection and

    an

    institute of

    training into

    the

glorious Christian life for these precious boys Shall we continue to reach

ou t and to c la im these precious lives for the Lord

    Jesus?

    What would

    you

    do?
