Bolton 2/27 Extended Care Chronicles FEBRUARY · ISSUE 2 · VOLUME 4 Recently US News & World Report came out with their list of the 100 Best Jobs in 2017. They base their rankings on several factors such as Salary, Employment Rate, 10-Year Growth of the Field, Job Prospects and other factors. It should be no surprise to anyone that Health Care related jobs scored over 50% of the 100 Best Jobs for 2017. A few of the rankings: CNAs. Between 2014 and 2024, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts employment of CNAs to grow about 18 percent, or increase by 262,000 positions, which is faster than average for all occupations. This is largely due to the aging baby boomer population, which will increase demand for patient care. Nursing aides require a certificate that allows them to both learn the nuts and bolts of nursing and complete supervised clinical work. CNAs can learn the necessary skills at community colleges, vocational and technical schools and finish with their certificate in less than 3-4 months. Even some high schools offer nursing aide programs. NURSES: In this profession, new, qualified personnel are almost always needed, but this is particularly the case as the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts more procedures will move away from the hospital setting and into outpatient care and nursing homes. Between 2014 and 2024, there could be 117,300 new positions, growing at a rate of 16 percent. There are several ways into the nurse profession: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) where students can get their education at community colleges, vocational and technical schools and the average time is 12-18 months; Registered Nurse (RN) there are two tracks of education for RNs, one that will take the student about two years to complete and the other BSN-RN which will take four years to complete. SOCIAL WORKERS: Not all health care is medical. There are also social aspects of medical problems, including how we prevent future medical problems, how we feel about a prognosis, how we judge the proper care we’ll need and how we cope with a stressful life change and work through the social aspects of our health. Social Workers advocate for patients and can explain health care resources and policies, assist in finding additional treatment and offer guidance for how to cope with various psychosocial issues that may arise. For Social Workers the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects a 19 percent employment growth by 2024, largely due to the comprehensive care the aging baby boomer generation will need. Social Workers usually take four years to complete the required education. There are also Assistants in this area such as Psych-Social Aide, Social Service Aides that are generally an on the job training program. So why did I want to use this issue of Extended Care Chronicles to write about this? Because I want our employees to see these jobs as career ladder steps. Extended Care Consulted facilities offer tuition reimbursement assistance for these types of programs. If you work in dietary, activities or housekeeping and want to become a CNA we want to help you, if you are a CNA and you want to become a LPN we want to help you. I want to commit to all of our employees that if you want to explore moving up the steps of a career ladder WE WILL BE THERE TO HELP YOU. Whether it is planning the steps, mentoring, or looking for resources we will be there for you. Please visit your Human Resources Department, if they can’t help you, or you need more assistance call the ECC VP of Human Resources Consultant and if she can’t help you or you need more assistance call or email me.
