Carrasco 1/31 Extended Care Chronicles JANUARY · ISSUE 1 · VOLUME 4 On behalf of all of us at Extended Care Consulting, let me wish each and every one a safe, healthy and happy New Year. Some things changed in 2016 and some things didn’t. In Illinois there is STILL no State budget, which causes concern for IL Medicaid providers which our consulted facilities are ones. Payments to Nursing Homes are still being made for our Medicaid residents but the process to get residents Medicaid approved has slowed greatly. There is also the concern that when a budget is finally passed the Governor or Legislators may try to pass a rate cut for Nursing Home resident services. We will be calling upon all of our community- residents, family members, and employees to help advocate against any cuts, should discussions start down that road. In Indiana, our Governor Mike Pence will have a new job on January 20th as the Vice President of the United States. Republican Eric Holcomb will be the new Governor of Indiana. Mr. Holcomb and Mr. Pence are both Republicans, so the administration’s focus should stay about the same and has been moderately positive toward Nursing Homes in general. For the Extended Care Consulted facilities we had some real successes: Census in 2016 although mostly with the first quarter and last quarter. The second and third quarter were a bit sluggish overall. So my hope for 2017 is that we continue the success we have seen in the later part of 2016 and continue. Public Health regulatory oversight was better for the Extended Care Consulted facilities in 2016 than 2015. Our Public Health Surveys on average are better than the State averages (7 violations) and our complaint investigations by Public Health with negative results are better (by far) than the State’s average. My goal for 2017 is that we continue this positive trend. We continue to focus our training and our staff’s attention on reducing Falls with injuries and eliminating Pressure Sores. We have had some successes in these areas and our goal is to increase these programs to do all we can do reduce accidents and prevent pressure sores. Success can only be had with the commitment, dedication and caring staff that each of our facilities employ. Happy New Year! On December 1st, 1994 Cathleen Austin Walked through the doors at Grasmere Place with just the intentions to work one year. Well after 22 Years of Service, from Certified Nurse’s Assistant to Certified Nursing supervisor to Marketing and Admissions Director, she has definitely found her niche. For Cathleen it isn’t just the first meeting at the hospital, she does everything from getting their belongings to taking the residents to their appointments for healthcare and to assure sufficient funding for both the resident and Grasmere Place. Cathleen says she has owed her longevity to Grasmere Place because of the challenges it brought her every day and changes that came with her moving up and working in the different departments kept her momentum going. Cathleen says it’s always an added bonus when you enjoy coming to work and seeing the residents thrive in this environment and help the ones that are not. Grasmere is thankful to Cathleen for always answering her phone, even in the middle of the night or receiving a text to go and handle a challenging situation. Cathleen for the past 22 years has definitely represented Grasmere Place, to many more years Cathleen.
