************************************************************************** Thoughts… Peggy & Ron Kratz, Chapter Directors FEBRUARY’S LOVE STORY… JOY AND GEORGE!

It’s February…6 more weeks of winter… I don’t think so! My mind has already shifted to spring… the picker bushes behind our house have already started to sprout that bright red color showing the new growth. When I go out to feed the horses in the early morning, there are birds singing… and love is in the air. Proof of that is shown by our Bernese Mountain Dog, Joy, who is rapidly gaining weight… starting to show that puppies will be coming … due end of February… could be born on father George’s birthday (President’s Day). Since the love bug bit during Ron’s hospital stay the last week in December, we don’t know the exact due date. We’ll just have to stay close to home during that last week. So, Joy could be birthing on our Y Gathering day and Ron and Bob will be running the meeting. So the Kratz household will be a nursery for a while.

Some trivia about whelping puppies. Gestation is 56 to 62 days. When puppies are born, they cannot see, hear, or smell for at least the first two weeks. When their eyes do open, it takes a few days before they can focus and see well. Mother and babies live in the whelping box in our bedroom for this early time. When they can see and hear, you guessed it… they move out of our room, down the hallway and into the rec room. They do get vocal when they see their mom and dad, and soon learn to recognize people as a way to get out of the box, so they talk to us as well. Depending on how many puppies we have, it can get pretty noisey. By the time they are 5 weeks old, they are eating puppy food and drinking from a bowl. Well, not exactly, they all converge on the food dishes and manage to wear most of the food… then they continue to eat cleaning it off of each other. They also start becoming good escape artists. Once the first one learns how to get out, they all follow. Yes, you guessed it, time for another move! By this time, we should be getting some warmer weather, and their new home will be in a nice big playpen area in our garage with a “doggie door” to the yard… makes house training very easy. Our neighbors are invited to stop in and play with our puppies… gives them a good socialization with various voices, sounds, smells. By eight weeks, they will be leaving for their forever homes with their new owners. AND, I’ll be back to riding on a regular basis again without having to arrange for puppy sitters. So, stop by and visit the nursery when you’re in our area.

Now, for some Y reminders… FEBRUARY 11, join us at Franconia Heritage Restaurant at 5 pm for our informal dinner. Phil saw his shadow… who cares, its just a dumb ground hog, what does he know. I’m voting for early spring and riding time again. A news article was sent to local newspapers drawing attention to our GWRRA organization, Chapter Y and our new 2017 Couple of the Year. If you see it in your paper, clip it and save it for our Y history book.

Happy Valentine’s Day to all… love you Y folks. Peggy and Ron Kratz Y CDs

From the Desk of ACD…. Bob and Elaine Williams, Asst. Chapter Directors

First off, we want to wish everybody a very loving Valentine's day… (guy's don't forget the flowers).

This being our first newsletter article as your new ACD'S, let us begin by saying a thank you to our CD's Ron & Peggy for all the work they have done this last year and a half. Their enthusiasm has kept everybody going strong. Also a thank you to Mike & Barbra for being last year’s ACD's.

A thank you for Pam, our MEC, for keeping all of the membership changes up-to-date. Dan & Joan I really appreciate you doing the newsletters & the website. Then if there are not 300 miles it isn't a ride, our 2016 Ride Coordinator leader Jeff, you did a great job setting up and leading our chapter rides plus taking care of the treasury.

Doug, with your passion safety, in doing the Rider Education for safety and knowledge along with Motorist Awareness, we want to thank you. Then last but not the least is smiling Lee. Both you and Dough have been a big help with our being Couple of the Year paper work. Then to all that were leaders and or tails thank you.

Then a big THANK YOU to the people that makes chapter Y great; the active members coming out to the gatherings, rides, informal meals, Roll for Dough, and special events. You are the ones who know sharing with friends is followed with having fun. You can’t help but have fun attending the rides, gatherings, and training. After all this is what GWRRA is all about, FRIENDS, SAFETY, KNOWLEDGE and the best of all FUN.

***************************************************************************************

From the Rider-Ed Coordinator… Doug Little, Chapter Educator Hello Chapter Y,

So far, this winter there have been several days to get in a quick ride. For those of us that have been able to get out it was a chance to brush up on our riding techniques and skills. It won’t be long and it will be time for all of us to enjoy group riding and our great machines.

The ride committee is putting together a fun filled ride schedule. With group riding being a major part of GWRRA and such a busy ride schedule, I feel it is important to review the basics of group riding. As we practice these techniques during our rides and sharpen our skills, it makes for a much easier time when we are confronted with unexpected weather and/or traffic conditions. GROUP RIDING TECHNIQUES:

Group riding usually consists of five to seven cycles with a Road Captain/Ride Leader, as the lead cycle, and a Trike as the Tail Gunner/Sweep whenever possible.

When the number of cycles allows, it is usually preferred to stay with five to seven within a group.

The lead cycle rides in the left track with all other cycles riding in staggered formation using both the right and left tracks. Remember that riding with trikes within the group that they do require additional space.

The staggered riding formation uses the two second rule where there should be two seconds between you and the cycle in front of you, and one second between you and the cycle riding is winter

To test your judgment, pick a point or landmark ahead of you and when the cycle directly in front of you passes that mark count one-thousand one, one-thousand two, and you should be at or almost at that same point. If you have passed the point you may want to consider increasing the distance between you and the cycle in front of you. The cycle riding staggered to your left or right should be at the one-second interval.

Any cycle not equipped with a CB will usually be placed in the middle of the group to make it easier for the rider to stay within the group and follow the maneuvers for safe riding while making it easier and more enjoyable for the rider and co-rider.

Before any ride begins there should be a brief riders meeting to discuss route of travel, safety considerations and any health concerns of any of our riders that we should know about. In case of an emergency this could be a vital piece of information.

With the busy ride schedule comes the safety checks of the

cycles. Don’t forget to perform a periodic T-CLOCK, as well as any scheduled maintenance.

As always, feel free to offer any ideas/topics you may want to be mentioned or discussed to either Peggy Kratz or myself at any time. All suggestions are welcomed.

MOTORIST AWARENESS…Doug Little, Motorist Awareness Coordinator

Usually this time of year seeing motorcycles in traffic is not the norm due to cold and snowy weather. However, with the mild winter there have been quite a few cycles out and about. To fellow cycle riders this does not seem so unusual other than the riders may be testing newly acquired cold weather riding gear or taking their safety chrome for a ride.

Raising awareness to motorcycles is not always the easiest thing to do, but keeping it the forefront with general conversation and talking about the motorcycles you see, in what non-motorcycle riders would consider the non-riding season, will make it a lot easier.

Remember, it is that time of year to start thinking how we can raise awareness of the motorcycling community to the non-motorcycle riders. This can be accomplished in many ways. Through civic organizations and activities, motorcycle displays, general conversations, parades, etc. Family and friends can be a vast resource in this area. MEC Corner… Pam Kratz, Member Enhancement Coordinator

Happy February everybody! Can you believe it’s February already? It seems like we were just gearing up for the holidays and now it’s February, WOW! I hope everyone is doing well and anxiously awaiting riding season. I know I am. There are plenty of great events and ride opportunities coming up this season, so keep tuned to the website www.gwrrapa-y.com and ride calendar for details. I can’t wait!

So far this year we’ve had a great turnout at our New Year’s Day luncheon, January informal dinner, our January Gathering and at MCC’s Chili Cook Off event. It’s been wonderful to see so many members in attendance. It’s always great to chat and catch up. Not seeing each other as often during the off-season makes these opportunities even more special.

Our February informal dinner is Saturday the 11th, 5:00 PM at Franconia Heritage. I hope you can make it. It’s always a blast. Remember, it’s very close to Valentine’s Day so you never know what kind of craziness is in store!

I also want to encourage everyone to consider attending the PA District Rally, May 18th through 20th, in State College. It’s a great opportunity to meet fellow GWRRA members, enjoy social activities, partake in training seminars, shop the vendor areas and take some great organized rides. There’s so much fun to be had, the weekend will slip by before you know it, but the friendships you’ll make will last forever. For more information, go to: http://www.codynparker.com/index.html and check out the District Website.

Another event to mark on your calendars is Montgomeryville Cycle Center’s Spring Sale Days. This year’s event is April 21st and 22nd. It’s shortened by a day this year, beginning Friday instead of Thursday, but you know the discounts will be amazing. The newly renovated Parts and Accessories shop will be complete and should be something to see. If you need some goodies or just want to show your support for our sponsoring dealership, make sure you stop by.

Finally, for those who weren’t at last month’s Gathering, we’re working on a campaign to spread the word about GWRRA and hopefully enhance our membership. National is sending us recruiting literature that we plan on distributing to our members so they can help us recruit. It’s a simple concept. Just carry a few pamphlets on your bike or in your car and any time you run across another Gold Wing rider, strike up a conversation and hand them a pamphlet. If they’re already a member, they’ll probably tell you. If not, they may ask a few questions or simply research it on their own later. You’d be surprised how such a minimal effort can be so effective. It’s worked well for us in the past but we need more folks involved to maximize the effect. I’ll be discussing this more and distributing pamphlets at a future Gathering. If you’re interested in helping and would like some sent to you, please contact me. As always, I wish everyone health, prosperity and the opportunity to ride. Remember to renew your membership and please let me know if any of your contact information changes. Until next time, stay safe and let’s pray Punxsutawney Phil is wrong. Pam

ROLL FOR DOUGH. . . . .Visitations Bob & Elaine Williams, RFD Coordinator

Here it is February already where did January go?

Well for one thing. Members of Chapter Y visited Chapter A for their breakfast. When

Elaine and I arrived at the Lion’s Diner & Buffet, in came a triked out scooter with a person wrapped up with only 2 eyes showing and his bike covered in thin sheets of ice. Talking to him later he rode from Pottstown to Lionsville (just south of the Morgantown turnpike). Ron & Peggy came and we went inside for warmth. While sitting and talking to CD Ben Johnson who should appear but Dan Reisinger out of the blue. We were surprised and received our first RFD point of 2017.

There are a few events where the chapter can get fun points coming up.

Coy weekend in March. Were we will be attending the COY weekend March 11th.

District Officers meeting on April 29th in Altoona.

The PA STATE RALLY in State College May 18th – 21st. Here we can get 3 points.

The HOBO STEW put on by chapter M May 7 May in Williamsport.

The DICE RUN with chapter H in June in Bloomsburg.

These are just a few single day rides we can attend.

FEBRUARY QUESTION…. What is Antenna Tread?

Here’s a bit of information I came across that peaked my interest… well, actually, never heard of it before. So, me being somewhat of a non-tech rider, I printed the article out and went right to Ron for his experienced input. He hadn’t heard about it either. So, now I’m sharing my new found knowledge with you all.

A question was raised about the tires on our bikes. Maybe you have noticed a thin line around the circumference of your tires, right in the middle of the tread. The line is a little bit darker than the rubber on either side of it. Feeling it with your thumb, it doesn’t feel like a groove. In checking for something rubbing to cause it, nothing is found. The tires appear to be working fine, they hold pressure and the handling of the bike is the same as it was with the last set of tires. OK, who knows what this is?

I’m feeling rather confident, smart at this point (since Ron didn’t know either)! In researching other articles, I read that its nothing to worry about. In fact, we should be glad it’s there unless you enjoy electrical shocks. Motorcycle tires have a lot of different materials in the compound. Silica is one that helps the rubber heat up quickly and improves grip in cold and wet conditions. One drawback of silica is that it’s a good electrical isolator. Tires with rubber compounds that use a lot of silica build up a static-electricity charge as you ride, sometimes enough to give you a light shock when you put your foot on the pavement, becoming the ground in the circuit.

Its said that this line around your tires is called “antenna tread.” Unlike the rest of the compound that makes up the tire, this line doesn’t have any silica in it, so it dissipates the static electricity as you ride rather than letting it accumulate. Antenna tread isn’t new or peculiar to any one tire brand. All motorcycle tire manufacturers build it into their tires—even car and truck tires have it—it can be harder to see there because of the dense tread. The visible line of antenna tread might fade or disappear over time… so there you have it… the line is nothing to worry about. Peggy Kratz, Chapter Director

Why was Johnny’s report card soaking wet?

Because all his grades were below C Level!

***************************************************************************************

From the Web Side… Dan Reisinger, Webmaster Hello Chapter Y!

Are you aware of the changes at G.W.R.R.A for 2017? Besides the monthly Wing World magazine; do you read other PA chapter’s newsletters? Do you read the District Newsletter? If you are reading this newsletter, you will see the District Director’s letter but there is a whole newsletter produced by the District. Do you read the Region B newsletter? Are you aware that G.W.R.R.A has introduced an online Wing World?

The “Home Office” newsletter is titled Insight Focus and also comes out on a monthly basis. It is available on the internet at http://gwrra.org/oconnect/newsletter.html and can be an interesting read. The articles are informative as to the changes that are being made in G.W.R.R.A, programs that are being introduced, benefits are explained, and personal stories are featured.

Do you enjoy the articles presented each month? Do you enjoy reading the contributed articles from our chapter participants? A couple of months ago I authored an article about contributing to the Chapter Y newsletter and we have had some interesting articles submitted and published in “our” newsletter. As I stated then and it is always true that we each have a story. That ride to nowhere and finding the neatest overlook, the most interesting museum, or what a fantastic curvy road!

Do you know why chapter attendees are referred to as chapter participants and not members? Not that it is written in stone; but the nice thing about G.W.R.R.A is that we are MEMBERS of every chapter in G.W.R.R.A. Have you gone when Bob Williams suggested a Roll For Dough ride to visit another chapter? It’s like walking into a (favorite – LOL) family gathering. Hugs and handshakes from all around. After all, we are MEMBERS!

Joan and I were on a trip many years ago along Route 6 and found a small tucked away gem! How many of you know that Marie Antoinette (that “let them eat cake” Marie) had plans to escape the French Revolution and her court had come to America to provide an asylum for her to live at? That Asylum is located right off Route 6 in northeast Pennsylvania! We found it by seeing a small sign on the side of the road on Route 6. We were privy to a private tour by the curator. What an interesting story and place to visit.

I know that Joan and I look forward every month to the articles that are submitted from the staff and TEAM of Chapter Y. They are interesting and so informative! We really get excited when we get contributed articles! They have been humorous, amazing, exciting, and informative. I look at sometimes the adventures of one being a planned trip for the chapter! I would LOVE to make the Virginia trip that Dave Youells shared last year with his family. I have to admit I tend to look south more than NORTH – but then I was raised in the south and that is like a going home trip LOL.

So the next time you’re at the keyboard and are thinking of a ride you took, an article you read, a news broadcast that sparked your interest, or just doing your “Dougie Howser” diary (remember that show ?); tell us your story. We will probably LOVE IT!

Pennsylvania District Directors… Rick and Andi Riek Greetings everyone,

Looking out the window as I am writing this newsletter and the snow is coming down rather hard. Just last week we had 60-degree weather and people were out on their bikes and now we have at least three inches of snow on the ground. I envy those snow birds in Florida. That will be us one of these days. We were on our way to our chapter’s After Christmas Party this past weekend and saw several people riding their bikes. I know the weather was nice to ride but I couldn’t help but see the cinders still on the road. One wrong move and you could be sliding. I don’t think I want to take that risk. I want my bike ready for riding season and not in the shop getting repaired.

It is nice to see chapters doing parties after the holidays. By making Christmas events in December and January it’s a lot easier to attend more parties. This year Andi and I have been able to attend more since they are spread out over the two months. It is always nice going to these parties and having a good time with our Gold Wing Family.

Thank you to all the Chapter Directors for sending in the end of year financial paperwork. I know it was not easy this year because of the changes that the IRS made to the 990N report and the Home Office changing the financial reports. We had a few glitches but we got through it. I think this was a learning experience for all of us.

As some of you may have noticed when looking at the District website that there is no gathering information for Chapter PA-F. That is because Chapter PA-F has been basically inactive for the last few years and now we have nobody to run the chapter. We are upset and very sad to see this happen. We tried everything possible to breathe some life into the chapter but nothing we tried seemed to get anyone interested in taking over the chapter. Please look at your chapter’s health. Make sure you try to do everything you can to make sure this doesn’t happen to your chapter. Some chapters get into a routine and don’t like to try new things. Sometimes new things can make the chapter come alive again. Don’t be afraid to try and suggest something new. If your chapter has an officer opening, don’t be afraid to step up and take the position. You never know what can happen with some input from you. It can be a very rewarding experience to lead a chapter.

The 2017 Roll for the Dough season has begun and there are chapters already on the move. Check out the points standing list on the district website under the MED button. If you are not visiting other chapters, shame on you. Now is the time to get going. There are chapter events going on all year long. Just look at the district website, find a chapter that has something scheduled and get moving. There seems to be several bowling challenges going on this winter. Why not grab a ball and have at it. Who knows maybe you will have some fun, learn something, and very possibly get your chapter charter fee paid for by the PA District for 2018.

Just a reminder that the District meeting will be held April 29 at Juniata United Methodist Church, 808 N Fourth St, Altoona. The meeting is open to Chapter Directors, Assistant Chapter Directors, Treasurers, MEC’s. and Educators. Please let us know who in your chapter will be attending. We will be sending out more information on the meeting as the time gets closer.

Also, a reminder that the PA District Rally is coming soon. Registrations are coming in so don’t put it off.

By the time, you get this newsletter you should have received your allotment of Region raffle tickets. We are sorry to announce that the district will not be purchasing them for our chapters this year. It would put a strain on our budget since we do not have a district fundraiser scheduled for 2017. We hope everyone understands and does everything they can to sell the 12 tickets we sent you. They can be sold individually or your chapter can purchase them. The PA District, along with the Region B, appreciate your support in this fundraiser. We know you will do your best in selling all the tickets.

Speaking of events, mark your calendar for a new Region Event. The Region Team is working on putting together a “Summer FUN Day.” On Sunday, July 9, 2017 at the Promised Land State Park, in the beautiful Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania we are planning a FUN day of games, food, a “Tricky Tray Auction,” and the Region Couple of the Year Selection will be held at this event. Please come out and support the region and have a great day with your GWRRA friends and family. The flyer for this event is posted on the Region website.

As always, ride safe and we will see you soon.
