Welcome to GWRRA Rider Education

Keeping Our Minds Sharp

I hope everyone had a great holiday! Now that the hectic season has passed, what do we do until we can jump on our Wings for another season of fresh air, open roads, friends and good times? We need to fill the down months with things that will help us to keep our minds sharp and bodies limber so that when we are able to ride again we are ready and alert enough to be safe.

For those of us that don’t go South for the winter where we can continue to ride we need to engage our body and brains to keep everything in top working order. Some examples of brain exercises that will help with our reaction time on our bikes as well as our cars is doing puzzles like crosswords or Sudoko or even jigsaw. My wife likes Sudoko and makes it a game to see how fast she can complete the puzzle trying to beat her previous time. She does the ones that are in the daily papers. The earlier in the week they are the easier they are and the later in the week are the more difficult. Her goal is to get the Friday ones done in half an hour. I on the other hand groom snowmobile trails in the winter months. This keeps my hand/eye coordination in top shape as it is very tricky to maneuver that groomer between some of those trees on our club trails. We also snowmobile throughout the winter so that keeps us alert also.

We also need to work on our body to keep it as flexible as possible so that when we take our first ride in March or April we are not stiff and can maneuver easily. Walking is always an excellent and easy exercise that

can be done anywhere. In the winter it is sometimes more difficult to walk outside so be careful. If you have access to a mall then they sometimes have walking there before the malls open or throughout the day. There is always a treadmill if you are used to walking on one or a stationary bike works well also. My father, who is in his late 80’s, rides his every day in the winter months so that he is ready for his outdoor activities in the Spring like mowing his lawn and gardening.

As we age we need to work harder at keeping our muscle strength in as good a shape as possible so that we can enjoy our beloved Wing activities for as long as possible. This doesn’t mean we have to do hour long aerobics but to continue to move and keep active. The goal should be to do something every day even if it’s just some simple stretching after a short walk and working up to an 1/2 - 1 hour walk.

It’s only 3 short months before the weather will be warm enough to start thinking of riding our bikes again so make them count. Let’s also start thinking of where we can ride this year. Last year the rides were awesome and the overnights were inspiring with getting to know each other and building friendships. Can’t wait to see everyone this month at Mike’s.

Be safe, Bob

“HIDE AND SEEK”by Ace (Howie) PetersonGuest Educator CO-Q

Those of us of a certain age grouping, which is most everyone in the Chapter, most likely recalls an advertisement which showed the face of some celebrity wearing a pair of sunglasses. The advertisement asked the question, “Who is that behind those Foster Grants”? Of course Foster Grant was the name of the sunglasses being worn, and the message was to emulate the person wearing the sunglasses by purchasing a pair for your own use. The subliminal portion of the message was the person viewing the advertisement focused upon the sunglasses, not the person wearing them, which of course was the whole sales pitch. It is this particular type of focus that is this month’s message which delves into our ability of perception within the world around us.

A portion of this article includes subject matter from Wing World’s January 2015 magazine, which is another one of those times my thought patterns on what to write, and another person’s article intersected. A portion of the article titled Ignition/Safety First by Mike and Barri Critzman is the source for part of the information used.

Scenario one: the rider or driver comes to a stop sign, looks right, looks left and pulls out into the roadway having turned left to access the proper lane. Upon completing the turn, looking in the rear view mirror the vehicle operator is startled to see the front of another vehicle only yards away from the rear end of his/her vehicle. How did that happen?

Scenario two: again the rider or driver is progressing down the highway towards a destination which involves making a left turn at a busy intersection which has a signed two way stop on either side of the highway. There is a vehicle in the left turn lane on his/her right at the intersection, and seeing no oncoming traffic begins the left turn planned. Suddenly, from the right side of the vehicle in the left turn lane appears another vehicle proceeding through the intersection directly into the turning vehicle. Again, where did this object appear from so suddenly?

Scenario three: this scenario is one of the most treacherous, and I say this from an experience we have all had more than once. It was also the cause of a fatality some years ago

involving a close friend. The rider or driver is waiting to pull out from a convenience store in the middle of the block in some town or city. Again, a left hand turn across traffic is involved. Approaching is a large van, who is signaling a right hand turn into the same store parking lot. Observing no traffic behind the van, the rider or driver enters the highway/street directly into the path of another vehicle hidden by the left side of the approaching van.

Disclaimer: I have used left turns in the article only because these forms of maneuvers are the most dangerous to vehicle operation. However, the same scenarios can be used for right hand turns as well. There are other examples that could be used in various situational lessons, but the intent is for the reader to take the lessons herein as only a portion of driving hazards that may occur. By now perhaps you the reader have considered this article has two parts, equally important. The first is things that are hidden from view, or within view but not truly seen. The second is seeking to find, observe, and identify those objects hidden, or not, that present a hazard to our safety. In each scenario, the rider/driver involved was seemingly aware of the surroundings and potential conflicts. Yet, either a near miss or an incident occurred. Why? A portion of the answer involves “looking” but not “seeing”.

I want to address “looking” first in this subject maIer. There again are many more facts than I want to address herein, but the most obvious one is not ac:vely looking. Factors addressing this issue include, but are not limited to, not fully stopping (hesitate and go), sight distance blocked (even by the windshield posts in a car/truck), light glare, sunlight directed into the eyes, vehicle color, and finally, aging vision. All of these factors can be single or in mul:ples of oncoming object hazards.

“Seeing” involves identifying the oncoming object or one which may move to impact our area of travel. One of the key items herein is head movement! Each of us is guilty of using the eyes only to look side to side depending upon our peripheral vision to “see” what is approaching. Truly seeing involves a full ninety degree head turn in each

Nobody has more Fun than “G”!

GWRRA Chapter NH-G The Lakes Region Wings Newsletter Page 9

direction to allow the eyes to fully envision what is really there within the field of danger. This is where the rolling stop is so dangerous, as we mentally are focused upon the move we are going to make, and not in reality seeing what is around us or oncoming as all this takes place in a nano- second of time. The time involved is not enough to identify specifically and with clarity everything that is important within the vision field. “Seeing” relies upon actively “looking” or scanning with enough of a time sequence for the eyes to transmit the needed message to the brain without other factors interrupting the message transmission.

Now back to Wing World to reiterate and clarify what has been discussed. In the article mentioned is one very important detail taught in every riding course and which is all too often mentally glossed over by the students, and the passing of time. That is the acronym SAA which stands for Search, Anticipate, and Act. Another used is “Stop” which is stop, think, observe, and plan. I am quoting here using the author’s words. “Looking and seeing are two different things. Looking is an act of pointing your head and eyes in a particular direction. Seeing is actively searching to identify what is there and locating things that are important to begin evaluating for future action being required”. This is the

essence of what this article is speaking to, and includes the three scenarios mentioned. We have been taught in various regimens to scan about us as we ride/drive and refrain from tunnel vision. Here is one somewhat scary fact; quote - “Data indicates that we are completely blind for a total of 40 minutes a day with our eyes wide open as the brain blanks out information during eye movement to prevent information overload”. This occurs during the periods we are actively scanning; what about the scenarios addressed previously? Are we really seeing, or blind during those time periods of traffic interaction through one method/cause or another?

The goal of this article is to bring “home” to each of us the need to become more observant in our surroundings, especially when operating any motor vehicle. We need to ask ourselves the ques:on oUen; we are looking but are we seeing? How long does it take for us to truly look, identify, and then decide to act? I would observe less than a minute to safely make these observations, so why not take the needed time to do these items safely. Look right, look left, look right, and left again with a full head turn each direction. The results otherwise may be different than envisioned! And as always, RIDE WITH PRIDE AND CONFIDENCE.

Until the Chapter gets a Motorist Awareness Coordinator, Nick Hoppner from the

Colorado District, will graciously provide us with MAD articles. Editor

Your “perfectly good” car tires may not be enough for winter driving

by Nick HoppnerColorado (West) Motorist Awareness Coordinator

Here’s a little tip to pass on to your friends and neighbors. Based on their warranties, auto tires should travel roughly 25,000 to 40,000 miles before their tread is worn to the halfway point. But worn tires—especially bald ones—can be deadly on wet, snowy or icy roads. When the grooves aren’t deep enough to channel away water or snow, the risk of hydroplaning increasessignificantly.

A recent National Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration survey found nearly 50 percent of 11,500 vehicles checked had at least onetire with half-worn tread. Another 10 percenthad at least one bald tire. A tire is considered bald when one or more of the grooves reaches 2/32ofaninchdeep,comparedwith10/32ofan inch for a new tire.

While tires with 2/32 of an inch of tread may be okay on warm, dry roads, giving the driver a false sense of security, when wintery conditions setin, avehiclehandleslikeitsridingonTeflon.Touch the brake pedal and slide into the ditch or another vehicle.

Ever wonder why you see so many cars abandoned in the median of super highways after a snow or ice storm? Hydroplaning begins at about 40 mph and gets worse at 60 mph.

Many drivers don’t realize their half-worn “all weather radials” no longer can safely handle “all weathers” at expressway speeds.

Reduced wet-weather braking can be even more dangerous than hydroplaning. Tires with half their tread gone take three to six feet longer to come to a complete stop from 40 mph even with anti-lock brakes doing their thing.

The truth is that when your tires are half worn out, they’re just going to get less and less reliable and safe the more you drive on them. Considering the cost of collision repairs and medical bills, installing a set of winter tires just makes sense when you live in a state where winter driving is a fact of life.

Think about it for yourself and spread the news to your friends and neighbors. Motorists need to be aware.

To all our American Friends in GWRRA

On behalf of our Rally Committee, I wish to extend a special invitation to all our Goldwing Friends in the Eastern Area of the United States to come to Nova Scotia and help us celebrate our 2015 Region Rally. It would be our pleasure to be your hosts and show you the beautiful Annapolis Valley area and other parts of our province. If you are wondering how to get here there are really three ways to make it easy for you to come to the Rally.

If you would like a longer ride and see some other parts of Atlantic Canada, you can enter Canada through Calais, Maine into St. Stephen New Brunswick and follow the roads to the Rally,

Or in Saint John, New Brunswick you may decide to take the Ferry to Digby and again follow the roads to the rally.

The third option is to drive to Portland, Maine and take the Nova Star overnight ferry to Yarmouth, and then follow the roads for approximately 2.5 hours to the Rally

Anyway, that you decide to come you will be driving through beautiful scenery that is Atlantic Canada.

Once again, I extend our invitation to you to make the trip and share this wonderful event with us and let us provide you with a real Canadian Welcome.

If you have questions on anything about the rally, hotels, the roads, the ferries or just want to talk, please feel free to call me at any time at 1-902-834-2179 if I am not available please leave a message and I will return your call.

Please make 2015 the year you Come to Canada.

SincerelyNoel FaceyRally Committe
