IL DISTRICT DIRECTORS: STEVE & DIANE GOTTSCHALK
Greetings from Southern Illinois!
Wow, we are halfway through 2017 and this is the 6th
month of our becoming District Directors and we want to
take this opportunity to again say "THANK YOU" to all our Illinois District members. We are always available
to provide any assistance you may need. We want you to enjoy your Chapter as well as making friends at other
Chapters. GWRRA offers you the opportunity to expand your riding family. We hope you continue to enjoy
your ride with us. 2017 will continue to be a fun year for all!
It’s time to put down the paperwork and get on your bike and ride! We are posting flyers of upcoming rallies
on the District website. Tomorrow we’ll ride 350 miles meet up with about 455 friends at the MO Branson
Rally; then two weeks later we’ll host the IL District Summer Rally; in July we’ll meet our northern friends at
the MN-ND District Rally; in August we’ll celebrate our IL Couple and Individual of the Year at the Region E
Rally; then we get to slow down and enjoy our Southern Illinois Ride-In, and of course we’ll finish rally season
with Wing Ding. Take a look at the flyers and consider visiting friends at a rally or two.
Are you thinking of becoming an instructor through the new GWRRA Instructor Training and Certification
Program (ITCP)? A certification course will be taught at Wing Ding this year. If you are interested contact our
District Trainer, Jean Potwora.
We’ve all heard of “Get Your Kicks on Route 66”, some of us have ridden all or some of this well-known
highway. On maps, it starts in Chicago and ends, about 2,400 miles later, in Santa Monica, California. Pontiac
is one of the most popular stops along historic Route 66.
2
Bug Run! Our Assistant Directors, Tom & Pam Waller, and Ride Coordinator, Bob Adams, are teaming up to
provide you a fantastic Sunset Ride with an opportunity to collect as many bugs as possible.
This summer, June 22, 23, 24 the city of Pontiac Illinois has agreed to again sponsor the IL District Summer
Rally! They have been very gracious in helping the District Team make this a fantastic rally with events for
everyone to enjoy. As with the past summer rallies this will be a riding rally. The flyer and registration form
are posted on the website. We hope to meet you there!
Ride Safe and Have Fun!

Greetings and salutations form Eastern IL,
Tell me if you have heard this before ---- I want to go on the Chapter ride this Saturday, but I have…..a
family function, yard work, another association function, etc. The list is endless. You have probably said it
yourself a time or two.
So, how do you choose? Well, this is pretty easy. Always remember that your family and work take
priority. Always!! So don’t feel bad if you have to miss a ride because of these obligations. We will miss you
if you can’t make a ride, but we completely understand. It just means we will get together at a later date.
Until next time.
Pam and Tom Waller, ADD
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR: GENE & ANNETTE SHIELDS
JUNE From Up North, It looks like we might start getting some good riding weather very soon. I know we have been under the weather this last few weeks and just now are feeling like we can get out and about.
3
Hope you are able to get to the rallies coming up this month, Like the MO district Rally and the IL District Rally. Maybe you are going to the NE/SD rally which is being held the same time as the IL rally. No matter where you go have FUN and Participate, Participate, Participate. There will be many things that might interest you and some great riding. We have found over the last few years that if you get involved and participate, you will have Fun and want to return next year.
Have you been out on the motorcycle much this year? Or like us, we have only had a few rides this year. Have you practiced your turns and stops or just done some parking lot practice? Now is the time to do it before you take off on some long trip and have a problem with your bike. If you keep up with your maintenance it should take only a few minutes to do a T-CLOCK inspection before leaving.
We don’t have a lot of news this month but we can share that we have lost another area Honda shop. For those that know them, Bob-Jo Cycle in Sycamore closed its doors around the first of May. They are keeping the shop open only for the bikes they have already scheduled for service and will not accept any others. They may have completed those by now. So like a lot of other Goldwing owners that used them as their go to Honda Dealer, we will be looking for another shop that we can trust to do the best job and do it correctly. Much of the work on the bike I do myself, like other people I know, but sometimes you need the certified Honda Goldwing mechanic to fix or repair something. So be sure to share with others, if you have a Honda shop you like and does a good job.
On a good note, we did get to Niehaus Cycle’s Customer Appreciation Days. Had some rain but still had a lot of fun. No I didn’t win the motorcycle but Jay and Michelle Hallstead from Godfrey won the GRAND PRIZE DRAWING and decided on the 2017 Pioneer 5 Deluxe and $2500 in accessories. Lots of other things were also given away so I hope you won something.
We did get a chance to stop by the Chapter Z Gathering in Metamora on our way home. Had a great time and lots of FUN.
Keep safe out there and remind others to “Watch For Motorcycles” as we will be on the road this riding season. Get out and visit other chapters when you can. They appreciate the guests and you can have a lot of FUN.

Before everyone calls me a baby from last month’s newsletter for somewhat complaining about
riding in rain, we did have to cancel the TRC at Sterling because of some very bad weather.
4
Safety comes first as thunderstorms and high winds and heavy rain was predicted for the
Sterling area. Since we were having several women, who were not concerned about the rain,
were coming from Wisconsin (4), we decided on safety. Rain is one thing but thunderstorms
and high wind are another. This class had 6 women signed up to take it.
Over the past weekend, May 26-29, we had a very good weekend ride to Galena and parts North
and West with a very good guide, Bob Adams. The training of Team Riding was implemented
and since we are from the flatland, this was a welcome change. This is one asset each chapter
has at its disposal; having someone that knows the area and can lead rides. Ron Hack on our
end, lead us up there and had a very good plan. This makes for a pleasant ride.
Now maintenance of the trike, front tire, front brake pads and left fork seal, I’m ready to go
again.

Triple O Bike Blessing
What a great idea it was to bring three different Chapter O’s together for a Bike Blessing, and
from two different regions also. When Charles Friedman, Director of Indiana Chapter O was
planning their Bike Blessing in 2016, he and his brother, the Priest at St. Francis of Assissi in
Aviston, Illinois decided to invite a member of the parish and his Chapter O members to join
them. That Bike Blessing went off without a hitch and was enjoyed by all who attended. The
Illinois & Indiana Chapter O members enjoyed a fun meal at a local restaurant following the
blessing. Fast Forward to 2017, again Father Dan & Charles Friedman began planning the bike
blessing, and wanted to see if it could reach more people, so they ask Dan Ribbing, former
Director of Illinois Chapter O if he had any ideas. Wheels turning, Missouri Chapter O was
invited, and their Directors, Gene & Karen Kaufman, were excited to be included. The date
was set, lunch was to be catered in the church hall, but Mother Nature put in her two cents
worth, with predicted rain. So, the original date was changed to plan B, which became
Saturday, May 13th
, at St. Francis of Assissi in Aviston, Illinois.
5
The weather was perfect, thirty-three bikes and one yellow bug showed up for the blessing, and
each person and vehicle were blessed, and then Father Dan requested a special audience with
the ladies of all three Chapter O’s. What a pleasant surprise when all the mothers received a
special blessing and a small special gift. During the planning, it was decided to have t-shirts
commemorating the event, so Dan Ribbing, Charles Friedman and Karen Kaufman designed the
logo for the shirts, took orders, had the shirts made and distributed at the event. The pictures
tell an impressive story. Afterwards, everyone went to a local park for a catered lunch. After a
very good lunch, Missouri O had a Triple O Trivia Game, with some questions stumping
everyone. Overall, a great day with a great big family. We hope to do this again next year and
maybe increase the number of Chapter O’s.

MOTORIST AWARENESS PROGRAM: LARRIE WIGGAND
JUNE
May was a very busy month, as it’s always designated to be motorcycle awareness month. This
month kicks off our yearly riding season and makes us more aware of our vulnerability as we are
out there among the motoring public. We strive to educate the motoring public of being aware of
us and in “seeing” us. No matter what we do, our last line of defense is ourselves. We can do
more to help keep us safe as we travel and enjoy our ride.
The month kicked off with the annual news conference in Springfield. Every year a news
conference is held to make note of May being motorcycle awareness month. This year, as was the
case last year, only one conference was held and that was in Springfield. Due to the budget
constraints, they no longer hold one in the Chicago area or in Carbondale. This year for the first
time, weather played a factor on the conference. This has been a very wet spring, and this day
was no different. Not only was it rainy, but it was quite chilly. Because of the threat of rain and
unpleasant weather, we chose not to ride. Walter and Jean Potwora were driving and they offered
Karla and I the opportunity to ride along. Wayne Schmidt from Chapter E also tagged along. Due
to the inclement weather, they planned on holding the conference indoors instead of outside on
the side walk in front of the old State Capitol building as was done in the past. The room where
this was held was the old Illinois State Supreme Court room, where many a case had been heard.
This turned out to be a good venue for the news conference. The speakers stood in front of the
various benches for seating and had a nice setup. All the news people were in the back room
videotaping and taking their notes. As was the case last year, the conference was introduced by
the Secretary of Transportation, who then introduced the different speakers. Once again, this
year, as was the case last year, the governor of Illinois, Bruce Rauner, was in attendance.
Governor Rauner is a rider himself and rode his Harley to the conference last year. He did also
this year, but his was a very short ride. After the governor spoke, there was a representative from
the Illinois State police as well as from A.B.A.T.E. and of course yours truly. It is an honor to have
the opportunity to represent G.W.R.R.A. at the news conference every year, this being my third
time. Afterwards, the news media could ask a question if they so inclined. Unlike last year when it
became a feeding frenzy for the media to ask about the budget crisis, this year one question was
asked and all of us could respond. Thankfully, the focus was on safety and motorcycles and not
political issues. All in all, it was a good conference and a great way to kick off the month.
7
May is also the time and opportunity, for those chapters who participate, to be a part of the
windshield wash. In conjunction with IDOT, we have volunteers who man various rest stops
throughout the state and offer to wash passing motorists’ windshields for free. They also then pass
out materials, that IDOT provides, to make them aware of motorcycles while they are out and
about travelling. Several chapters have reported their windshield wash events and we have had
about 40 participants washing several hundred windshields. This is a great program to be
involved in and if you don’t, you may consider doing so. I know with the budget crisis, this is
being made difficult, because several rest stops are closed. For the second year in a row, we had
to change ours because of that.
It is certainly a great opportunity for us to be able to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather and
the riding experience, but we do have to be very mindful of the dangers and hazards that we
encounter. So many drivers today are very distracted and it becomes dangerous driving, whether
on two, three or four wheels. I had that brought home rather bluntly the other day when I was out
riding. I was trying to merge from one interstate to another and travelling next to a semi-truck. As
I was preparing to pass it and move in front of it, a car in the lane next to me decided that he also
wanted to get ahead of the truck before we were to merge. I slowed down a bit to allow him
access to do so. As I did, he slipped in front of me, and took away my cushion space. As we were
speeding up to pass and merge, that didn’t seem so bad. That is until the semi decided, after the
car was about even with his back tire that he wanted to move over into our lane. Adding to all of
this was the fact that it had been raining earlier and the pavement was still wet. The car had no place to go but
to the shoulder and I had to stomp on my brakes because I no longer had any place to go. Just that
quick and it could have been quite the disaster! So, you just never know and that is why it is so
important to pay attention and anticipate what other drivers might do. Even if you don’t know
what they are going to do.
So, I am hoping that you will have an awesome riding season this year. We have many events
planned, including our District summer rally in Pontiac at the end of the month. I hope that you
will plan to attend and be safe out there!
MICHAEL OLSON REGION E MAP DIRECTOR
The N23 form is no longer used at the District, Region, or National level. As requested by Mike and Barri
Critzman, National Directors, it is now to be a synopsis - snapshot format, much like we send to Jere for the
Region E snapshot. I sent this information to all the District MAP Directors previously.
Also, there is now no official position for MAP at the Chapter level, however chapters can decide what title
they want to 'dub' their person or persons that take on that responsibility. There still needs to be someone who
will give that information to their District MAP Director so they can get it to me. This info for the snapshot still
falls to the Educator at any level if there is no MAP person.
One of the other District MAP Directors indicated that he wanted to continue to have his people use the N23
form and that is their choice, but information sent to me needs to be in a snapshot format, please. Please forward
this as you feel it appropriate to others in your district.
Please let me know if you have questions or other comments. Directors, please be sure to pass this information
on to all people in your district - not just MAP persons.

Why is it no-one likes change? I find myself doing this over and over, "That's not the way we
used to do it" or That's not the way we did it before".
Keeping things the same keeps us comfortable. We all seem to crave routine. Ever notice that
we visit other chapters to mingle and visit with them and then we all go sit together and end up
talking with the same people we came with instead of the people we just came to visit.
Comfortablility - Routine.
Yet if we go to the same location every year for a ride/rally we tend to complain about been
there, done that? Is this just human nature?
Try this idea - what did you not do the last time you were at the same location? What can you
do different this time?
The Illinos District Summer Raly is being held in Pontiac, Illinos. A fantastic agenda has been
planned for this event. Yes it is in the same place as last year. Pontiac is a place you need to
visit more than once or twice to see everything it has to offer. There is no way anyone got to
visit even half the museums they have to offer or shop at the small stores or visit the parks in
the short time we were there last year. The rally isn't all about what is on the agenda, it is also
about the location. The agenda is set up for you to be able to enjoy both aspects. We will have
games, Wingo, seminars, rides and all the usual things the Illinois District Rally has become
famous for. The date has changed so we are hoping this will bring us cooler weather than we
have had in the past. Aren't you tired of melting in the sun while riding in the parade or
participating in the bike show? We hope you will join us this year to make another wonderful
memory for years to come. Every Member Counts!!!

RIDE COORDINATOR : BOB ADAMS
JUNE
Hello Everyone,
I just wanted to remind everyone about our Illinois District Rally coming up June 22nd- 24th in Pontiac.
Last year we had a great time and the riding was good. We visited some locations along Rt. 66 and
enjoyed lunch. So if you missed going last year, I hope you will attend this year. We will again have a
sunset ride on Thursday night, led by myself & Mary and Brian & Debbie King. We will be including the
bug run again this year.
Chapter "C" will be leading a ride south to a dairy farm on Friday. I will be leading a ride north to a
couple of old RT. 66 gas stations and an old city jail, then we will have lunch at the Rt. 66 Drive Inn. I
think the rides will only be about 5 hours long, so we won't be gone all-day. There will be sign-up sheets
on Thursday for all the rides, so please make sure and sign up. Well I hope to see all of you in Pontiac
and remember to look at the Illinois District web page, if you want to know what's going on in Illinois.

JUNE
Greetings We are excited to have received nomination paperwork for many of the Chapters but at
this time we do not have anyone that is interested in entering the selection process.
It’s not too late to participate at the Winter Warm Up Couple and Individual of the Year selection
process, the cutoff date will be in December. So if you’re interested gives us a call and we can discuss
anything you would like to know about the process. We will have those that we have paperwork for on
display at the Summer Rally in Pontiac. Let's hope for some cooler weather than we had last year, but
the Rec Center made fun possible...and we did have fun. Join us and cheer on your nominated
COY/IOY. See you soon in Pontiac!

JUNE
Where has the last month gone? It seems like yesterday we wrote the monthly COY Newsletter article.
We have been sick much of the month and did not get out to as many events as we planned to. It has been one
of those lasting cough and congestion things that just will not go completely away. After four weeks I am
almost over it but Annette is still having trouble and it most likely will be the end of the week before she is
pretty much over it.
11
I think the last article we had just returned from the Tennessee, next on our list is MO District Rally in Branson.
We have been able to attend two Chapter L gatherings and Niehaus Cycle Customer Appreciation days. We did
get to Chapter Z gathering on Sunday as we traveled home. Had a lot of Fun and food. I (Gene) was able to ride
the bike in the Fulton Dutch Days Parade with Chapter G.
On Wednesday the 24th, I rode the bike on the “Vets Roll” Escort along with three other Chapter L members
and a couple of Chapter WI-A members. We had at least two hundred bikes, maybe even three hundred and
rode from Belvidere Oasis to Beloit WI Eclipse Center down Interstate 90 with flags flying. The police blocked
off all the north bound traffic for us, so we were the only vehicles on the road going north. Riding with flags at
60 to 65 MPH is sure tough on flags. There were ten busses of Vets and caregivers that we escorted home from
Washington DC. I have participated in this for the last five or six years. It is an awesome event that will be
remembered for years to come. Getting to see the vets reaction of a large escort of Motorcycle, Police and
Emergency vehicles brought many to tears on both side of the event. This is an event that is done each year and
if you have a chance to do something like this or the “Honor Flights” that do much the same thing.
We are getting things ready for our ride to Branson, MO for the Missouri District Rally. We will be riding the
bikes along with another couple that has never been to this rally before. So we are praying we have good
weather as last year it rained almost the whole time we were there along with a lot of rain on the trips both
down and back.
Hope to see you at Branson or the Illinois District Rally in Pontiac, IL June 22nd through the 24th. Theme is
“Get Your Kicks on Rt. 66”. Should be lots to do and lots of Fun.
So keep healthy and ride safe.

2017 INDIVIDUAL OF THE YEAR:LARRIE WIGGAND
IOY Article
The month of May saw a lot of activity, as Illinois designates this month to be one that concentrates on making
the motoring public more aware of those of us who ride motorcycles. I was invited, along with several others, to
be a guest speaker for the news conference that is held every year to kick off this event. This event is held in
Springfield at the old state capital. Due to the inclement weather this year, for the first time, it was held indoors
in what was the old Supreme Court room. This turned out to work out rather nicely. The speakers were up front
at the speakers stand and everyone else were sitting in the benches. The governor spoke as well as several
others. Even the news people this year concentrated on the topic on hand instead of a feeding frenzy concerning
the budget crisis like they did last year.
Another event that happened this month was the annual Niehaus customer appreciation days. Several chapters
participate in this event along with a number from the district team. Between selling tickets and different food
items at the various booths, we did our part to help support this event. As Niehaus supports the chapters, as well
as the district, it is our way of returning the favor. On Saturday and Sunday, a stunt cyclist once again
entertained those at the event. Some of the stunts were quite amazing. Thankfully the weather was much more
cooperative this year compared to last year.
So, now looking forward to next month and the activities that are planned, including the summer district rally, it
should be a lot of fun. Of course, the biggest event for me will occur on June 14 when Karla and I will be
getting married in Alton at a bed and breakfast called the Beall Mansion. This will be the start of a new
adventure and I am looking forward to it!
