Thoughts from Your Chapter Director Peggy & Ron Kratz

APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY FLOWERS…. BAH! HUMBUG!

WE’RE READY FOR NICE RIDING WEATHER!!!

Wow… March was a busy month for Y… started off

with the Maintenance Seminar held at our sponsor

Montgomeryville Cycle Center and taught by Steve

Bennington. That evening, a large group enjoyed dinner

together at Franconia Heritage Restaurant. I heard a few

leprechauns showed up. A week later, member Nick

Bykowski took twelve of our members through the 1st Aid/CPR/AED class… Nick did a

great job of teaching us the technical requirements, while keeping it interesting and fun. We

thank him for volunteering to do this for us. We thank Blue Comet for donating the use of

their facility for this training. Following week, our Y Gathering was well attended and ride

schedule discussed. Many enjoyed the luncheon afterward, sharing stories with friends. Last

weekend of the month… two Y events going on… Our Couple of the Year Bob Cox and

Katie Green traveled to Clearfield to join in a Fun Day with all the other Couples. It gave

them an opportunity to meet others across the state and learn more about the program details.

Nettie McFarland (ACD) and I made the trip as well to support our special couple. Same

day, our new Motorist Awareness Coordinator, Raven Myers, arranged for a community

event at Royal Farms to bring focus on driver awareness and promote safety for all.

Like I said, WOW… so many great activities for us. Now, we begin April… it is

referred to as April showers… but since we’ve been having showers regularly, it seems like

FOREVER. I’m betting on better weather for riding now!

The ride schedule is posted on the website and in this newsletter…check it out and

mark your calendars… don’t be left behind… the making of memories begins!!!

See you soon!

Peggy and Ron Kratz …, Chapter Directors

Y KNOT …….. WHY NOT? Y KNOT …. Yes, why not? You see various Y members wearing a small white Y pin with red, white and blue ribbon knotted across it. Its Chapter Y’s way of saying THANK YOU to those who have volunteered to lend a hand to assist our chapter in creating fun, safety and knowledge. Please welcome these two new volunteers …. MOTORIST AWARENESS …. Raven Myers has taken on the chapter staff position of Motorist Awareness Coordinator. This position is important to all our safety. The community events that Raven sets up are our chapter’s way of spreading knowledge and awareness of motorcyclists to the general public. Raven designed a banner that identifies us and was used at this first event at Royal Farms recently. We thank Raven for his commitment to making this difference in the community. When Raven was asked, his answer ….. WHY NOT?

AND…………….. GOODIES STORE…. Cathy Fenley has accepted our request for her help in handling our chapter store, referred to as GOODIES. We are happy to have her take over this important position… she has supplies of various patches and pins, also district and GWRRA items as well. She can help you with vests, shirts, jackets, etc.… check our website for more information… www.chapterpa-y.com. When Cathy was asked to help, her answer ….. WHY NOT?

A little explanation about the chapter vests with multiple patches and pins. On the left side of the vest.. at the top is our American Flag followed by the GWRRA patch, top and bottom rockers further indicate the officer/staff responsibilities of the individual… the “Charter” rocker indicates a member who helped start our chapter. On the same side, look for patches that designate the participation and level progress in the rider education program, completion of GWRRA rider training and University trainer programs… also Wing Ding pins. GWRRA is rider ed driven and presents many training programs and leadership possibilities for its members.

The right side of the vest carries your name badge and the Chapter Y ID patch. The Roll for Dough Program supports visiting other chapters… notice the PA. shaped pin with various chapter “bars” dangling below indicating chapters they have visited. You will also see state Rally pins and patches… also folks proudly display pins/patches from places they have visited on their Wing. They will be glad to share a story about each one!

On the back of the vest, we proudly display the large 10” GWRRA patch, with our Chapter Y and Pennsylvania rockers. Couple of the Year rockers identify those for their on-going participation and support of the GWRRA ideals. Vests are all about pride we feel for our organization, our chapter and ourselves. Vests are a personal preference… not a requirement for membership. ****Chapter Y members appreciate their response and their efforts on our behalf!!!****

MEC Corner Pam Kratz, MEC Coordinator

Springtime is here! We’ve all been anxiously awaiting riding

season and so far there has been quite a few beautiful days to get out and ride.

We have a lot of events that have been taking place with more to come.

Montgomeryville Cycle Center held a Maintenance Seminar put on by one of our Goldwing Mechanics, Steve Bennington. There were 18 Chapter Y members in attendance. I have to say I even learned a few things along the way. We all found this seminar very informative. Great job Steve.

We also, had our last Saturday informal. We now have our informal dinners the second Monday of each month during riding season. The meet time is 6:30 at various restaurant locations to be determined.

Raven Meyers, our MAD Coordinator, did a great job organizing our first MAD event at Royal Farms in Kulpsville March 30th. In attendance were Raven and Vivian Meyers, Calvin and Hettie Webb, Doug Little, and Jeff and Pam Kratz. After the event, we went for a beautiful ride for the rest of the afternoon and dinner after. We clocked 130 miles! It was great to get out and enjoy the afternoon.

Montgomeryville Cycle Center is doing things different this year with sale days during April. April 13th will be the Honda Demo Event. I will have a table there like always, full of GWRRA information for that day.

Welcome to all of our new members! If you or any of our existing members need any help with your membership please feel free to reach out and contact me for help. Remember to prepare yourself for a day of riding by getting plenty of sleep the night before, hydrate prior to ride day and throughout the day, dress in layers, and bring extra water bottles and snacks. All these things are essential for a great day of riding. I’m looking forward to our riding season! So enjoy the weather, and happy Spring and Easter! See you soon! Pam

Motorist Awareness Coordinator Raven Myers

We met at Royal Farms in Towimencin Sat morning. Got set up

by 9:45 and had coffee. In attendance was Vivian Myers, Jeff & Pam Kratz, Calvin & Heddy Webb, Doug Little, and well Me (Raven Myers).

It was sunny, a little breezy but overall a nice day. Most people were receptive but there were a few that wanted nothing to do with our safety.

There was one guy who came up and seemed disappointed that we wanted no money. The folks at Royal Farms were a joy to deal with. They welcomed us with open arms and even said ‘Come back anytime’.

Crossing my fingers that Wal-Mart on the 13th of this month goes as well if not better.

Couple of the Year Katie Green

Couple of the Year Fun Day. . .

This last Saturday morning, March 30, Bob and I rose quite early (5 a.m.!) to make the drive out to Clearfield, PA, to the Trinity United Methodist church center where we had the Couple of the Year Fun day. I must commend John and Glenda Leib, District COY coordinators, for all the hard work it took to put this together for all the district couples. It was well-run, informative, and lots of fun! We were very happy to have Peggy and Nettie accompany us to the program also.

It started with cinnamon coffee cake, pastries, and coffee/hot tea to give everyone some energy to get going. I know not everyone drove 4 ½ hours to get there, so we were especially appreciative of the refreshments. The first exercise was a timed two-minute speech given at the front of the room with a microphone and all! We both had to contribute to telling “our story”. Since we were going in alphabetical order, we ended up last, and I felt it helped to see how all the others did it. Peggy and Nettie escorted us to the front as they will do at the rally, and then we were on our own! Unfortunately, Bob had a sever sinus infection, so his voice and enthusiasm were waning, but he did splendidly, and we did better than I expected for an ad lib speech. Our [individual couples] pictures were taken, and each couple received a vase with a red rose. After a short break, we were seated for a group picture, and then Pat, the emcee, asked each couple a sample question. It was funny and interesting listening to all the couples’ answers about each other . Then we were given a sheet with a “bingo” card, and told to “work the room” to get our answers. I enjoyed going around to everybody to find such things as “someone with the same shoe size”, “has visited every state”, “current CPR card”, “your zodiac sign”, and 21 other fun facts. To encourage more interaction, no one could sign a square on your card more than once, and the only square I was unable to fill was finding a person born in the same state as me (VA). It gave us a chance to talk to all the other couples, as well as Harold and Diane Jackson, our state directors, and Rene Waslyk. After we finished that portion of the day, a white rose was added to our vase.

Then it was time for lunch, and the church ladies did an excellent job of providing for us! Great food! After filling our bellies, we had a slide show about filling in our COY resumes, along with a question and answer session about what to expect, and practice sessions with the “judges”. It was announced that only “first time” couples are allowed in the competition now, so of the 10 couples in attendance, only 8 were eligible for presentation at the rally. We need to decide if we want to be in the rally presentation in York, as this will be our only opportunity. At the end of the day, a black rose was added to our vase, and the three signified the Black Roses Chapter V from Hanover, PA (hosting the rally in York), white rose of York, and the red rose of Lancaster. I thought that was a very nice touch to complete our day!

Due to Bob’s ill health, we decided to stay overnight and relax before heading back on Sunday, so we found a place called Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub in Clearfield for some supper, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area! Though it didn’t really look like much from the outside, and it advertised being 40 years old, it was very nice (newly refurbished maybe?) inside. We were quite impressed with the cleanliness and great food, along with friendly, efficient servers and plenty of seating. All in all, it was a great weekend made even better by the fact that I had to miss moving my step-dad into his independent living facility here in Bethlehem on Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning!

From the Web Side… Dan Reisinger, Webmaster

Hi Chapter Y!

With the up and down weather we have been having in March, I have had a lot of time to sit and remove Facebook posts LOL. But one post that really caught my attention had to do with something that we were all taught in our youth – the saying of Please and Thank You. The OP (Original Poster) made a comment how they were noticing as “we” became more connected to social media (Facebook in this event) that they were noticing a decline to an outright ignoring of expressing Please and Thank You.

Well, that had me off to Google – of course the search was on! Did you know that the first known use of Thanks in English according to Merriam-Webster wasn’t until the 12th Century! Oh my gosh, were we that rude before the 12th Century? Do you realize that Thanks originally did not convey a thought of gratitude? Again according to Merriam-Webster states that the word ‘thanks’ stemmed from the Latin word tongere (there is one of those wiggly lines over the first ‘e’) which loosely translated to THINK! Hmmm, so the expression somehow came to mean “I will remember what you have done for me”.

Anyway, getting back to that Facebook poster, their thoughts were today with texting, social media, email, and any number of the messengers out there that they noticed how seldom do they see a thank-you from someone for sending a text or email or messaging. It is amazing how that original meaning to remember what you have done for me struck home. You took time to reach out with some information to make my day easier or wiser, Thank You! You actually thought about me and mine to convey a thought of concern, Thank You! You found a joke that you knew I would laugh with you, Thank You.

Now how does that relate to G.W.R.R.A., the Pennsylvania District, and Chapter PA-Y? It all comes down to the ‘remember what you have done for me’ when we look at the benefits G.W.R.R.A. has negotiated for us the members – the discounts for hotels, the basic rescue package with our membership, the organizing of districts to form a structure to have rallies, accommodate educational seminars for safe riding, and fun activities, develop chapters where members can participate, schedule rides, and create friendships with a common interest in motorcycles. It is nice to remember what G.W.R.R.A has done for “me”. Thank You!

Those individuals who are officers and staff in the chapters who look for ways to do more than just schedule rides and have gatherings every month, they look for ways that interest the participants to cultivate friendships. Yes, there are the informal dinners and ice cream meet ups, but chapter “life” isn’t restricted to just that. If you have an idea for fun, (Thank You!) let our Chapter Director know. Thank You! It is nice to remember what you have done for me.

So for what the Chapter Director has done this last 3 plus years, Thank You, it is nice to remember what you have done for me. For those who took up the Assistant Chapter Director staff, Thank You, it is nice to remember what you have done for me. For the Treasurer, Thank You, it is nice to remember what you have done for me. For the Member Enhancement Coordinator, Thank You, it is nice to remember what you have done for me. For the Ride Educator and now the Ride Coordinator, Thank You, it is nice to remember what you have done for me. For the Motor

The PA District Rally horse race (above), Roll For Dough picture with District Directors (right and below).

Enjoying a Chapter Y weekday ride to Maryland. Pete Grillo led the ride, stopped off at a Marina (where he has his sailboat), showed how the watercraft “live”, and even made sure there was an Ice Cream STOP!

Awareness Coordinator, Thank You, it is nice to remember what you have done for me. For the Roll for Dough Coordinator, Thank You, it is nice to remember what you have done for me. Thank you for the Secretary and Goodies and Sunshine and Couples of the Year, Thank You, it is nice to remember what you have done for me.

BUT to the MOST important of all THANK YOU to the participants of Chapter PA-Y and being MEMBERS of G.W.R.R.A., for it is nice to remember what you have done for me AND IT IS BECAUSE OF YOU there is a G.W.R.R.A and a Pennsylvania District and a Chapter PA-Y! Please and Thank You. . . .

FROM YOUR PA DISTRICT EDUCATOR… Chuck & Evelyn Stone

Hi Everyone:

The Riding Season is closing in on us with most of you taking your first ride of the season starting in May.

The following are just plain old common sense, but when common sense is in short supply, the numbers change on the statistics page.

BACK OFF DUDE: Space is the best protection you have between yourself and the people who are not you. Keep your distance from others, so you have more time to react and more space to adjust when someone else does something stupid.

TO SOME PEOPLE A YELLOW LIGHT MEANS GO FASTER: Many crashes happen at intersections. Cars that turn left in front of you and cars on the side streets that pull into your lane are the biggest dangers. Always be looking for potential hazards, and anticipating how you will react. If a car can cross your path, assume that it will. That old saying about assumptions? It doesn’t apply here.

WHAT ARE YOU A PSYCHIC OR SOMETHING? It’s pretty-simple – if you have the right skills you can react a lot quicker and help avoid crashes. Studies show that most riders involved in crashes either under brake the front tire and over brake the rear, or do not separate braking from swerving or choose swerving when it’s not appropriate. Knowing when and how to stop or swerve are critical skills to keep your butt off the ground.

IF ONLY EVERY LINE WAS STRAIGHT, BUT WHAT FUN WOULD THAT BE? A common cause of single-vehicle crashes is riders running wide in a curve or turn and colliding with the roadway or fixed object. Be alert to whether a curve remains constant, gradually widens, gets tighter, or involves multiple turns.

BEING AFRAID OF A LITTLE PIECE OF RUBBER DOES NOT MAKE YOU LESS MANLY. Potholes, wet or icy surfaces, railroad tracks and tire scraps all increase your chances of going down. Avoid obstacles by slowing down or going around them – duh, right? On slippery roads, reduce your speed, use both brakes and try to keep your bike as upright as possible. When crossing railroad tracks, it’s safer to stay in your lane rather than try to turn to cross at a 90-degree angle. For track and road seams that run parallel to your route, cross at a 90-degree angle. For track and road seams that run parallel to your route, cross at an angle of at least 45-degrees to avoid catching your tires.

TURN MAN: Traffic lights don’t hate you. It’s just that some of them don’t turn green until they receive a signal from a metal detector buried in the pavement. But, sometimes bikes don’t have enough metal to make them work. Seriously, just try to locate a detector – usually a square or octagonal pattern of thin lines in the pavement – and ride along it.

IF THEY CAN’T SEE YOU, YOU DON’T EXIST: Many crashes happen when the driver of a car doesn’t see you. No surprise there. So, help yourself by wearing the proper clothing, using your headlight and riding in the best lane position. And, before making a move, always let people know what you’re doing by using the correct signals.

Evelyn and I would like to wish everyone a Happy Easter on April 21st.

Ride Safe and Ride Proud.
