St. Lawrence Elementary School is “Stuck on Reading” Earning 1st Place in Reading Challenge St. Lawrence School, 1000 North Greece Road, won the 2014 Diocese of Rochester Fall Reading Challenge. The elementary students read more minutes per student than any of the other 19 Diocesan Schools. Total number of minutes read from Monday, October 20 through Friday, October 31, 2014 averaged 393.05 minutes per child. Minutes were tracked and calculated using the Scholastic Read 100,000 website, a free online reading challenge for kids. Students continue to log daily reading minutes and have achieved over 100,000 minutes of home reading time.
Students and faculty participated in a celebration for this accomplishment along with Anthony S. Cook, Superintendent of Catholic Schools and Jona A. Wright, Associate Superintendent of Catholic Schools. The celebration included cake, a trophy and St. Lawrence principal, Frank Arvizzigno, being duct taped by the students to the gym wall. All students came to school, ready to tape… and tape they did! Mr. Arvizzigno held tight to his promise to “keep our kids Stuck on Reading” as he was suspended from gym the wall.

Greece Chamber of Commerce is first in the US to have NISM Social Media Strategist on staff
The Greece Chamber of Com-merce announced that their organi-zation is the first Chamber of Com-merce in the United States, and the first organization of any kind in the Rochester Finger Lakes Region, to have a NISM (National Institute of Social Media) Social Media Strate-
gist on staff. Terry Hogan, Director of Marketing & Com-munications, at the Greece Chamber of Commerce, com-pleted the NISM Social Media Strategist (SMS) course and passed the certification exam on Thursday, December 18, 2014.
The NISM Social Media Strategist certification exam as-sesses the candidates knowledge within six content do-mains required of general practitioners in vocations of social media: Strategic Planning, Compliance and Gov-ernance, Project Management, Social Media Marketing, Community Management, and Research and Analysis. These content domains have been defined by the current NISM Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) Professional Job Study. There are numerous advantages in having someone right on staff that has extensive knowledge of social me-dia and its many components, for both the Greece Cham-ber membership, and the organization itself. “The Greece
Chamber of Commerce is delighted to be the first Chamber in the nation with this cutting-edge technical expertise on staff,” said Sarah Lentini, Greece Chamber of Commerce President and CEO. “This gives us another important av-enue for providing services and resources to our member-ship and the business community.”
The National Institute for Social Media (NISM), located in Minneapolis, MN, was founded in 2011 as the first organi-zation to offer vendor-neutral, industry standardized certi-fication and education for the field social media. “We love that the Greece Chamber has made the decision to invest in their staff and their members through professional skill development and certification,” said Jennifer Radke, VP of Business Development for the National Institute for Social Media. “This certification will allow the Greece Chamber to keep up with the communication needs of their com-munity and increase effectiveness. It will be our pleasure to watch the Greece Chamber of Commerce utilize this knowledge and skill to work for the Chamber community.”
Established in 1984, the Greece Chamber of Commerce represents over 800 business members, making it the larg-est suburban Chamber of Commerce in Monroe County. For more information about the Greece Chamber of Com-merce, call the Chamber office, at 585-227-7272 or visit www.greecechamber.org. Provided information and photo

Greece Police Department taking the lead in technology with the launch of Body Worn Camerasby Tami Raco
As many law enforcement agencies across the coun-try begin to consider the use of the Body Worn Cameras, Greece Police Officers are already taking the lead in this technology as they implement the use of the newly pur-chased Body Worn Cameras.
Body worn cameras are video devices worn on the front of an officer’s uniform to capture any contact officers might have with citizens, whether it is a traffic stop or call for service at a residence or business. When officers exit their vehicles, they can turn the body camera on, and it captures data during traffic stops, data gathered on crime scenes and calls for service. The cameras do have night vi-sion technology and can be both audio and or video re-cording devices.
The body cameras are to be used as another digital tool that can assist the officer in collecting information. It is also a tool to help increase and strengthen the public’s trust. National Department of Justice studies indicate that the use of the Body Worn Cameras can reduce citizen com-plaints by 88% and reduce the use of force by over 50%.
The Greece Police Department began to research the Body Worn Cameras in 2014 and purchased 20 of them in June of 2014. After training and writing the policy, the cameras were phased in on November 17, 2014.
According to Sergeant Jared René of the Greece Police Department Community Services Unit, the department purchased a total of 20 Body Worn Cameras, enough to outfit each patrolman on the road during their shift. The total cost of the cameras was $7,000 including the acces-sories. The additional expense of video storage runs ap-proximately $3,000 per year. According to Sgt. René,the majority of the storage costs were covered by Greece Po-lice Department grant funding.
The new Body Worn Cameras are to be used by the offi-cers at their own discre-tion as a tool to help them with their public safety r e s p o n s i -bilities. The department policy does e n co u ra ge the officers to use them
as often as possible. When the camera is being used the officers will use reasonable expectation of privacy unless it is pursuant to an arrest. When interviewing Sergeant Jar-ed René he said, “The Greece Police Department is com-mitted to researching, developing and implementing new ways to ensure we are providing the citizens of our com-munity with the highest level of police service we can. The Body Worn Cam-eras are another great tool to assist us in our commit-ment. Studies have shown the use of body worn cam-eras to be effective instru-ments for the collection of evidence, the investigation of crimes and the reduc-tion in citizen complaints. The Greece Police Depart-ment hopes to achieve those same results.”

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich
I would like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year, and I hope that you enjoyed a great holiday season. The colder weather may be moving in quickly, but Department of Public Works Commissioner, Kirk Morris, has crews out on the roads ensuring our residents are able to travel safely. For more information on our Winter Parking Ordinance, please visit our Town website.
We have a lot to look forward to in the coming year, and I am excited to share our vision with the Town. A selection has just been made via a rigorous interview process to design a new Police Precinct right here on Town Hall Campus. We look forward to working together with the architectural team to create a much needed update to our Police Headquarters. Additionally, the Town Board has recently accepted a land donation of over seventeen acres, which increases the green space of the Town to more than 4,000 acres of public open space.
Also coming in 2015 will be a full service café area in the Greece Public Library. Patrons will be able to enjoy hot beverages and light snacks right in the comfort of the library. Remember, you can now follow us on Twitter (@GreeceTown) and Facebook for event updates and other Town related news.
As always, I enjoy hearing feedback from residents about programming and other town related issues. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office.

This is a love story, a story about the love and devotion that a zookeeper has for an animal, and how that love and devotion is returned back to the human.
Mary Ellen Ostrander of Greece has worked at The Sen-eca Park Zoo for 29 years. Through the years she has cared for hundreds of animals including bison, cattle, toads, el-ephants, orangutans, polar bears and of course, sea lions. In all her years of working with animals she never quite met anyone like Puff, the sea lion. “I have loved every ani-mal that I have cared for. When you are the caretaker of a human or a non-human animal, over time a bond grows and, if you are willing to go out of your comfort zone, love grows,” Mary Ellen says.
The bond Mary Ellen formed with Puff and what she learned by knowing, trusting, caring for, and training him is the subject of her book, Puff the Sea Lion - A Love Story.
The book is a tribute to Puff who lived a short life, he died at age 6 from complications during an examination to determine the cause of a bloody nasal discharge. “I wrote
A Love Storyby Barbara Burke
the book so that Puff will always be remembered, but there are also many messages in this small story,” Mary Ellen says.
The messages are about trust, and understanding oth-ers that are not the same as you, about hard work and the most important message that Mary Ellen hopes will get across, is to young animal trainers, “I want young trainers to know that my experience has taught me that when you treat animals with love and respect as you train them, you will achieve your desired results. I feel it is true for humans too. When I learned to meet new animals and humans by first looking for the good instead of the bad, it changed my life. I want everyone to approach life with that knowledge, it makes you look at the whole world in a different way,” she says.
That is exactly why she has been so happy working at Seneca Park Zoo. “Our zoo cares for the animals as indi-viduals. Each one is unique with their specific needs and ways to live their lives. We talk and think about them as individuals, for example, ‘There’s Anastasia, the tiger, she prefers this type of food, and loves to play with this toy or game, she likes to be spoken to in this tone of voice’. We know them each as individuals,” Mary Ellen says.
Mary Ellen with her three rescued dogs…Pancakes, Pringles and Puddles. She also has a rescued cat, Melody.
GreeceNewsNY.com February 2015 19
This is Victor a male cockatiel who shares Mary Ellen’s home with her and her other birds Chickie, another male cockatiel and Finchy, a Finch. All of Mary Ellen’s animal friends who share her home are rescues.
The Seneca Park Zoo mission is stated as “Through the exhibition of animals in naturalistic settings, the Seneca Park Zoo will provide engaging and educational experienc-es to give our community the motivation and skills to act as stewards of the environment.” Their Vision is stated as “Education. Conservation leadership. Commitment to our community.”
The main story in the book is about the relationship be-tween Mary Ellen and Puff. How this relationship grew and how trust was formed, and how it evolved. “Some people will never know what I found in Puff. There are no words for it. I wanted to write this book to help people feel the way that I felt knowing Puff. As Puff grew I could always tell how he would behave and he always knew he was safe with me. I really needed him as much as I felt he needed me and my companionship,” Mary Ellen says.
The book contains the stories about the other sea lions that shared the zoo living space with Puff including Floun-der the male patriarch, who Puff was brought into the zoo as a companion for. Also the young, rescued females Star and Angel who were both wild-born, shot by humans, and rehabilitated at a Marine Mammal Center in California be-fore being brought to live at Seneca Park Zoo. And yes, the book has a happy ending in the form of a sea lion pup by the name of PJ who was born at the zoo on June 1, 2013.
“I am so glad I wrote the book,” Mary Ellen says, “for ever and ever people will know about Puff and know his story. And everyone who reads this story will realize how much the animals at the zoo are loved, and how they are cared for as individuals.”
Proceeds from the sale of Puff The Sea Lion - A Love
Story will help rehabilitate wild sea lions at various marine mammal centers in the United States, and to Sandy Smith’s not-for-profit pet spay and neuter program which benefits many other animals of all species.
Puff The Sea Lion - A Love Story is available at both loca-tions of Alpha and Omega Book Store in Greece and Pen-field, The Barn Owl in Penfield, The Seneca Park Zoo Gift Shop, Apple Annies in Greece, The Greece Historical Soci-ety in the Greece Town Hall Campus and on Amazon.

“I work with individuals looking to find new ways to grow their business. Most people come to a point where they want to do better in business. I help with all aspects, financial planning, finding staff, all the ba-sics of structure and discipline,” he says.
Bob helps owners define what it is they want, what point they are at, how they can be better, and what will work in attaining that goal. “I show business owners ways to get from here to there,” Bob says.
AdviCoach is part of Franchise Source Brands Interna-tional. Bob’s business is one of 130 plus AdviCoach fran-chises across the United States. The AdviCoach approach is designed to create awareness among business owners about the dangers all owners face, and how it impacts their individual business. Bob has owned AdviCoach for three years. He has over 40 years business experience, with 30 of those years as President and franchisee of Rochester Manpower, Inc. Lat-er he became a franchisee with The Entrepreneurs Source, helping individuals get into business with an appropriate franchise.
Today, through AdviCoach, he has expanded his work into business coaching, guiding small and medium sized business owners to their full potential. “I also work with people helping them to find successful methods to leave their business, an exit strategy, including helping with the transition from business owner to whatever they choose to move on to. This includes selling the business and get-ting the most money for their business,” Bob says.

Six tips to help you keep your New Year’s Resolutionsby Tami Mungenast Personal Trainer/Nutrition Coach
1) Start with small steps - Avoid taking on too many changes at once. This is often why many New Year’s Resolutions fail. If its your diet your looking to improve make small changes versus radical ones. If your beginning an exercise program set a realistic goal of how often you will exercise. Don’t over do it in January and stop going in February. If you alter your normal behavior radically you are more likely to derail your good intentions. If you’ve resolved to starting running, start out by going for a jog two or three times a week. If you want to lose weight start by replacing some of your favorite junk processed foods with healthier whole foods. It may seem like a slow start but in the long run small changes make it easier to stick to your new habits and help increase the odds for long term success.
2) Pick one Resolution - Avoid putting your energy in too many resolutions and spreading yourself too thin. You will find greater success if you focus on one or two important resolutions.
3) Don’t let life’s challenges derail you - Encountering a setback is one of the most common reasons why people give up on their resolutions. Life will happen, prepare yourself for challenging times and how you can stay on track. If you find that you relapse into a bad habit, don’t give up. It doesn’t have to be the end of your goal. The path toward your goal is not a straight one and there will always be challenges. Instead, view relapses as learning opportunities.
4) Find support and motivation from your friends and family - Yes, the “friends and family plan.” You may have heard this advice a million times, but that is because the buddy system actually works. Having a solid support system can help you stay motivated. Explain what your goals are to your support system and ask them to help you achieve them. Even better enlist the help of others by joining a group that shares your goal. Work out groups or Weight loss groups are always a great source of support and ongoing motivation.
5) Keep working on your goals by the end of February, many people have lost their motivation that they felt immediately after making their New Year’s Resolution. Keep your inspiration on fire by continuing to work on your
goals, even after challenges and setbacks. If your current approach is not working, re-evaluate and come up with a new plan. Consider journaling your motivations and your success so that you refer to them at more difficult times.
6) Renew your motivation - In January you will probably felt confident and highly motivated to reach your goal. Motivation is easy to come by on these days because you most likely have not faced much discomfort or temptation associated with changing your behavior. At these times making the changes might seem easy. Flash forward to dealing with the reality of dragging yourself to the gym at 6 A.M. or gritting your teeth through headaches brought on by reducing your sugar intake, or the agitation caused by giving up nicotine, your motivation to keep your New Year’s Resolution will probably start to dwindle. These are the very times when you need to remind yourself of exactly why you are doing this. What do you have to gain by achieving your goal? Keep your pipeline of inspirations available to you to help keep you going.
Try implementing some of these suggestions in 2015 and you will be more likely to see results…
Wishes for a Happy and Healthy New Year!

After all, knowing what the goals are is the first step to achieving them. Long-term, short-term, big or small, think about what you are trying to accomplish. Once the personal and financial objectives are understood, we can help you prioritize them and craft a strategy on how to reach them.”
Diana Apostolova is a Retirement Planning Specialist

Retirement means having the time and resources to do the things you enjoy most in life. Regardless of where you are financially, we’ll help you set up your first retirement account, and actively contribute to it. What is important, no matter what stage in life you are, you should take control of your future and start planning now.”
Young people starting out in today’s world face unique challenges when considering retirement. “Chances are if you recently graduated and started a new job, you will not have the option to receive a pension in retirement, which you parents or grandparents may have had. But even if you do, your pension income is rarely the same amount as your earned income. Taking steps to minimize the gap is all in your hands. We will work with you to develop a plan, implement it, and take care of the details,” Diana says.
