Greece Athena Trojans Varsity Boys Soccer Team Recognized

On November 18, 2014, Supervisor Reilich recognized the great accomplishments of the Greece Athena Trojans Varsity Boys Soccer Team at the Greece Town board meeting. Through a valiant display of teamwork and

athleticism, the Trojans won the New York State Class A Title for the first time in club history.

“You went into the State tournament as true underdogs, no team in Greece history had ever won this title before. However, you rose to the occasion and overcame all odds to come out on top” said Supervisor Reilich in a speech to the team. “I think I speak for everyone when I say that the entire town is extremely proud of you all, and cannot wait to see what you can accomplish in the future.”

From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich

Heading into this holi-day season, the Town Hall has been hard at work in many different areas. The first holiday tree lighting ceremony with the newly planted tree took place on De-cember 2nd. A special visit from Santa was complimented with popcorn and cups of hot cocoa for all in attendance. Performances by the Greece Concert Band and the Greece Arcadia Middle School Choir rounded out the evening perfectly.

At this month’s meeting of the Town Board, the 2015 Budget was unanimously approved. This budget is the product of many months of tough decision making and diligent spending practices. Early on in my administration, I realized that in order to hold the line on property taxes in 2015 I had to close a budget gap of over $2.5 million. To close this gap, I challenged my department heads to find ways to become more efficient and reduce spending in their departments.

The Barnard Crossing branch of the Greece Public Library officially opened its doors at the new location on Monday, November 24th. It was a main priority of the Town to en-sure that this branch remained in the same neighborhood as to continue to serve residents and patrons in the Dewey Stone area. 2808 Dewey Avenue is now the current site of the Barnard Crossing branch of the Greece Public Library. We invite all residents to come down and visit the new lo-cation.

The Town of Greece will also have a “Pickleball League” beginning on January 17, 2015. The league will run through March 28, 2015 and will be held on Saturdays from 11:30am-1:00pm. More information please call the Community and Senior Center at 723-2425. When the weather warms up, Pickleball players will also find that there are brand new courts right behind the pavilion that will be ready for use.

Lastly, I would like to wish all of our residents and their families a safe and happy holiday season.

The Mall at Greece Ridge

Colors, lights, bells, excitement… the holiday spirit is in the air at The Mall at Greece Ridge.

And don’t forget a visit with Santa! Santa will be at the Mall Mondays-Fridays 11am-8pm; Saturdays 10am-8pm and Sundays 11am-6pm.

Pictured giving Santa a hug is Kayla, age 3 whose parents said this was the first time she was brave enough to actually see Santa. They had been all over town with no luck, and much to their surprise she not only spoke to Santa she actually gave him a hug… Christmas magic!

Native American Day

Perry Gound is animated and energetic as he relates his stories to the audience at the Greece Community and Senior Center.

Audience participation is part of the story telling process.

The Greece Historical Society hosted Native American Day at the Greece Community and Senior Center on November 8, 2014. A large crowd heard stories and viewed 500-750 year old artifacts found in and around the Greece area.

The program consisted of presentations by Perry Ground, Storyteller, a member of the Turtle Clan; George Hamell, an

archaeologist and Assistant Curator of Anthropology at The Rochester Museum and Science Center; and Frieda Schultz a member of the Wolf Clan, and daughter of a Tuscarora Nation Chief, who spoke of life growing up on a reservation near Niagara Falls.

Casey Sheehan is Back in Rochesterby Barbara Burke

When 2010 Greece Athena graduate Casey Sheehan played basketball on Athena’s Boys Varsity team he was team MVP his junior and senior years. When he attended Daemen College in Amherst, New York from 2010 to 2014, he excelled in College Basketball as well, winning Daemen College Men’s Basketball 2012-2013 Most Outstanding Player and Male Athlete of the Year.

To say that basketball runs through his veins would be an understatement. “I have had a basketball in my hands ever since I can remember,” Casey says. During

elementary school his dad Kevin Sheehan would take him to the YMCA before school at 6:00 a.m. in the morning to play basketball. “My dad was my coach growing up, he taught me about basketball. It was always fun for me. It kept me active and out of trouble,” he says.

Casey was fortunate because he says, “My parents could afford to send me to the basketball camps during the summer months, they supported me and my love of the game.” The camps were a chance for Casey to experience the basketball programs of the entire Greece School District including his own program at Athena, and the programs at Arcadia and Olympia. “I was able to meet all the players, from all of the teams that attended the Greece camps, it was very competitive and great fun.”

Casey got to know his future Athena High School basketball coach Jim Johnson through these basketball camps. “I’ve know Coach Johnson since I was in the 8th grade. I grew up around him. The way he coaches and how he taught us to think about basketball has had a lasting impression on me,” Casey says.

Coach Jim Johnson has been coaching Varsity Basketball at Athena for 19 years. He has great admiration for Casey as well, he said, “I believe that Casey knows that I truly care for him. I feel that about every kid that I coach. I want them to succeed in life and I want to help them to be a better person and a better basketball player. Casey is one of the top two or three kids that I have coached who showed the most improvement over the two years that I coached him. He came into the varsity program as a starter. He had not only a passion for basketball, but also God given talent and a strong drive to get better. He improved his body and got stronger and stronger,” Coach Johnson says.

Casey’s Daeman College basketball years were just as productive, and his outstanding playing abilities were recognized with honors throughout his four years of Division II college basketball. His Daemen College Associate Head Coach Mike Miranto says, “Casey Photos by Tom Parsons

Page 19: GreeceNewsNY.com December 2014

GreeceNewsNY.com December 2014 19

Sheehan is one of the most dynamic playmakers I’ve ever seen at the Division II level. He can get to the rack, hit pull-up jumpers, draw and kick; he can truly do it all when the ball is in his hands.”

After graduation from Daeman this past spring, Casey considered playing for a team overseas. “I just didn’t feel I was ready for that, I decided to stay around home,” he says. He attended tryouts in Buffalo for The Rochester RazorSharks and the Buffalo 716ers. He sat down with the RazorSharks coach and had a conversation. After the first meeting the RazorSharks Coach Robert Spon called, and a meeting was scheduled where Casey signed a one year contract to play for the Rochester RazorSharks team this 2014-2015 season.

Casey will be the point guard for the RazorSharks,

one of the most challenging positions on the team. The point guard is responsible for bringing the ball out, recognizing the defense the opposition is playing, getting the team into its offense, making sure all players are aware of their roles on the floor and creating scoring opportunities for the players around him and for himself.

Casey is excited to be playing for the RazorSharks, and to be playing in Rochester he says, “It’s great that my family and friends can come to the games to see me play again. There is nothing else like having that support in the stands.”

The RazorSharks 2014-2015 season kicks off at home, Saturday, December 6th at 1:00 p.m. playing the Carolina Vipers at Blue Cross Arena. Casey Sheehan will be wearing #12.

Get ready for the crossword challenge!by Westside News Inc. staff

Spencerport resident and crossword puzzle constructor John Dunn says his puzzles, which have been featured in editions of the Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald newspapers, are unique oppor-tunities both for him and for lo-cal puzzle solvers.

Dunn, who is president of Dunn’s Home Furnishings in Brockport, began constructing puzzles over five years ago. He had always loved solving cross-word puzzles and decided to teach himself the art of making them.

He bought a book about the process which also explained the quality of puzzles that publications would accept.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Dunn says, “tinkering with puzzles. It’s my hobby.”

After four submissions, the NY Times accepted one of his puz-zles for publication. “That’s a hoot, getting that email,” Dunn says.

He now has had eight puzzles published in the NY Times, in-cluding a Sunday puzzle he co-constructed.

Dunn has also had puzzles published in the LA Times, and in books published by Simon & Schuster and St. Martin’s Press.

Dunn explains that constructors have three objectives when creating a puzzle: It must be enjoyable, entertaining and educa-tional.

“You want someone to have fun doing your puzzle,” he says. “I push the boundaries a little bit -- in order to get someone to smile or chuckle.”

Despite the popularity of electronic games, Dunn says puz-zles continue to be popular, as they have been for thousands of years.

“Puzzles have always fascinated humans,” he says. “Puzzles are appealing to everybody and have always been a part of society.”

5 Tips to Help You Avoid Holiday Weight Gainby Tami Mungenast, Personal Trainer/Nutrition and Wellness Coach

Enjoying the holiday season and balancing your health goals can be tricky, but if you plan in advance, and put some thought into what you put on your plate, you can en-joy this time of year without the guilt or the weight gain.

Wear snug clothes and keep one hand busy. When you wear form-fitting attire, chances are you’ll be too busy holding in your stomach to overeat (or want to overeat). Also, while you stand around looking your best in your snug fitting holiday attire, hold a drink in your dominant hand so it will be more difficult to grab food.

Pre-game with Chia seeds. Before you head to the party, add a tablespoon of Chia seeds to a glass of water. Rich in antioxidants and minerals, these little seeds expand in your stomach and can really help curb cravings as well as reduce inflammation. Chia seeds help make you feel fuller longer. It is similar to eating nuts but the chia seeds are not as calorically dense.

Chew gum. When you’re trying to avoid mindless holiday snacking, pop a piece of sugarless gum into your mouth.

This works well when you’re cooking or when you’re trying to avoid the dessert table.

Alternate alcohol with nonalcoholic beverages. Alcoholic drinks can be loaded with empty calories and can increase your risk to engage in mindless eating. Especially limit holi-day favorites like eggnog. By cutting the alcohol drinks in half by alternating them, or by watering down with seltzer or water, you get more mileage without added calories.

Be a food snob. If you don’t love it, don’t eat it! Scan the holiday buffet table for the foods you truly treasure and skip those everyday dishes that are available all year long. Don’t feel that it is your job to sample everything on the table. Go ahead and indulge in your holiday favorites, find a seat and enjoy it slowly... enjoying every mouthful.

Original Cornerstone and Time Capsule Returned to St. John the Evangelist Church

On November 16, 2014 Greece Town Supervisor Bill

Reilich was on hand to help present the cornerstone of the St. Johns School back to St. John the Evangelist Church, 2400 West Ridge Road, Greece.

This cornerstone was recovered from the site of the St. Johns School on West Ridge Road. Also in attendance for the presentation were Anthony and Mario Daniele who are the owners of the property, and Father Peter Enyan-Boadu, Pastor of St. Johns Church.

Along with the cornerstone, another exciting historical artifact was recovered... a time capsule. This time capsule will be opened at the 150th anniversary celebration to be held in May of 2015.

The first formal school was opened at St John’s in 1881 in the basement of the church with thirty-four students. The first building was finished in 1890. In 1909, a small ad-dition was added and it remained for another forty years. In 1949, an eight classroom addition replaced the oldest wooden frame building and in 1953, the remaining wood-

en school was removed and another eight classroom addi-tion was completed.

The school officially closed in June 2005 after 124 years of Catholic education.

American Accentsby Barbara Burke

For 35 years Evelyn Meagher has owned and operated American Accents Furniture and Interiors located at 5319 Ridge Road West in Spencerport.

Situated in a large 1850’s, historic, red barn, American Accents is four levels of home furnishings overflowing with charm, character and appeal, all created by Evelyn Meagher, an award winning designer who has been chosen five times to decorate rooms for the benefit of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra for their Symphony Showcase fundraiser.

American Accents has beautiful, high-quality, unique furniture all Made in America from solid hardwoods in oak, maple, cherry and quarter sawn oak. They also carry Habersham artist painted furniture and upholstered furnishings.

Home decorating accessories abound, including braided rugs, Tiffany style lamps, lace curtains, doilies, large framed prints, wreaths and floral arrangements. There are also 16 Christmas trees that are decorated and shown year round, including an upside-down tree.

American Accents is more than just new furniture, they have a large room, “The Antique Cupboard” full of furnishings and treasures from years gone by.

Last year the Garden Room opened offering items for outdoor decorating. The room is stocked with American made porch furnishings, bird houses (one is over seven feet tall), wood sculptures, Made in the USA plastic furnishings made from recycled milk bottles and stunning iron works including fences, gates, arbors and trellises, and much, much, more.

In the works is a Design Studio which will be located in an outbuilding that was once used for drying tobacco. “We had a hard time finding someone to work on reconstruction of the building. We contacted an Amish gentleman who took on the task. In the Design Studio I will have a quiet

place to meet with clients and work on my own designs,” Evelyn says. She is also available for in-home design consultations and can help you put together a look that is uniquely you.

Evelyn is currently working on designs for her own line of barn wood furniture. “I am designing a series of barn wood dining tables

and benches. I have barn wood that I have sourced from barns right here on our property and from a supplier. I am also working on designs for iron legs for the benches and side tables,” she says. The one-of-a-kind pieces will be sold in her store.

For 25 years Evelyn has been a realtor with the ReMax Realty Group. “It really all goes together… homes, design, furnishings. I work with my real estate clients to help them showcase their homes. I stage and prep my listings as a free service to my real estate clients,” she says.

Evelyn points out that she is able to do so much because of the help she receives from her employee Sharon Pane, “We work together and she keeps me going,” Evelyn says.

During the holiday season, American Accents offers 10% off all in-stock and special order furniture now thru December 20th. During their Holiday Open House on December 13 and 14 the entire store will be 10% off. Stop in during the Open House for hot cider, sweets, special sales and drawings.

Spotlight on Business

Beth Giambrone

Fast-Fix Jewelry& Watch Repairsby Barbara Burke

Fast-Fix Jewelry & Watch Repairs owner Beth Giambrone said the minute she walked into the store she knew it was the business for her. “I was looking for a business opportunity and I came upon the Fast-Fix Jewelry & Watch Repairs business franchise for sale. I have always worked in retail, in management and in customer service. I knew as soon as I saw the store, it just felt right. You know how they say to go with your gut feelings, I did, and it has proven to be the right choice for me,” Beth says. She has owned and operated Fast-Fix Jewelry & Watch Repairs for the past seven years.

Fast-Fix Jewelry & Watch Repairs is located at 400 Greece Ridge Center Drive in The Mall at Greece Ridge, near Macy’s. They specialize in jewelry and watch repairs. They also repair all makes of Smart Phones, iPhones, tablets, iPads, iPods and all other small electronics. “The great benefit to being located in the mall is that all of our work is done in-house and most repairs can be completed within an hour. Our customers can drop off their item, go shopping for an hour and return to the store to pick up the repaired piece,” she says.

Fast-Fix Jewelry & Watch Repairs is not only a repair shop, they also offer a full line of jewelry including rings, bracelets, necklaces, money clips and more. Jewelry is available in sterling silver, gold, and stainless steel. They also carry watches and clocks and a

full line of gift items perfect for holiday gift giving.Fast-Fix Jewelry & Watch Repairs has five employees.

Owner and manager Beth, two jewelers, a watch technician and electronics expert. “I really didn’t have to know a whole lot about jewelry repair to own the business. I have learned along the way. I have excellent employees, professionals who do the repair work. I can do some battery replacement and band adjustments and I am also learning the electronics aspect of the business. The difference between our store and many other repair shops is when you bring your broken item here the break will be repaired, and the entire piece will be completely inspected before it goes back into your hands. That way, any future problems or wear on the piece will be identified and corrected so you won’t have to be back in a short time for another repair,” Beth says.

Beth is from Fredonia, New York and said the first thing she did when she started her business was to join the Greece Chamber of Commerce. She says, “The Chamber has been wonderful to me. When I moved here I didn’t know anybody or anything about the Greece area. I have made many friends and very important business contacts through the Chamber. I have hosted 1st Fridays at the store and the networking has proven to be very valuable to me and to my business.”

LIFETREE CAFÉ at Hope Churchby Barbara Burke

The Lifetree Café is an outreach ministry of Hope Church, 1301 Vintage Lane in Greece. The logo of Lifetree Café says “Doing life. Doing good.” Part of a network of over 300 locations across the United States and Canada it was founded by Thom and Joanie Schultz of Group Publishing. Lifetree Café is described as, “A place where you can ex-plore life, meet new friends and experience God.”

Hope Church’s Lifetree Café Director David Hurlbutt says everyone is welcome, “Our motto is… You’re welcome just as you are. Your thoughts are welcome. Your doubts are welcome. We’re all in this together, God is here, ready to connect with you in a fresh new way.”

The Lifetree Café meets every Monday evening at the Church from 7:00-8:00 p.m. It is described as an hour long experience packed with interesting stories, fascinating people and lively conversation that will feed your soul. The main entrée at Lifetree Café is food for thought.

The typical format for the evening is to view a film that has been provided through the Lifetree Café organiza-tion. Each session is hosted by a leadership team. As the film progresses it is stopped for discussion, either group or individual table discussions. “We always try to have a leadership team member who has a special interest in the evening’s topic to be the host,” David says.

Topics can also be “hot topics” that are about current events. “ We try very hard to be current. We had a large turn out during the last Presidential election when Mitt

Romney and President Obama were the candidates. We had a discussion on “What is Mormon?” and invited mem-bers of the local Mormon congregation that is located just around the corner from our church. We had many of their members attend which resulted in great discussions and understanding. We tell everyone we would rather talk with you than about you,” David said.

One recent topic of discussion was about the Muslim re-ligion. “With all that is going on in the Middle East and the misunderstandings about the Muslim religion, it is impor-tant to discuss these types of current events that affect our lives,” David says.

In existence for four years, The Lifetree Café at Hope Church was recently honored with the Lifetree Café “Branch of the Year” award. “It is a great honor to be recognized. I believe it has something to do with the fact that the over-all average attendance of Lifetree Cafés is about 22 people per session, our average at Hope Church’s Lifetree Café is 60-70 people per session,” David says.

The Lifetree Café is free and open to the public. They serve “Great coffee, tasty snacks and stimulating conver-

sation,” it is a unique place where differences of opin-ion can be shared yet every-one leaves as friends.

Upcoming films include on Monday, December 15th, “What Would You Do For Love” and on Monday, December 22nd “Angels - Are They Really Reaching Out To You.”
