You have to be visible in the community. You have to get out there and connect with people. It’s not called net-sitting or net-eating. It’s called networking. You have to work at it.

It is Never to Early to Learn What a Chamber Is…
As many of you know, at Spearfish Creekside Elementary the 5th grade class hosts a Business Fair each spring. These aspiring entrepreneurs create a business plan and a product to sell. For years, their business plan has included a budget line for ‘Chamber Membership’. This year we gave each 5th grade student a ‘member decal’. And Mrs. Gillespie’s 5th Grade class walked to the Chamber for a pres-entation and tour prior to the Business Fair. The students and the chamber staff greatly enjoyed the experience. We even had a couple of our business member’s children in the class and boy were they proud to find their parents information displayed!
Leadership Spearfish Graduates the Class of 2014
The 27th Leadership Spearfish Class culminated with a graduation ceremony on May 22, 2014. The class of 2014
successfully completed a nine month comprehensive course study focusing on professional growth and development,
communication, interaction and exploration of fundamental leadership skills, as well as community development per
the requirement of the Spearfish Chamber Board of Directors.

Spearfish Economic Indicators
Last month, Spearfish Economic Development, along with representatives from the Rushmore Region Business Alliance, attended the 22nd annual Williston Petroleum Conference in Bismarck, ND. The purpose for going to the conference was to promote the Black Hills as a strategic location for businesses wanting to provide same-day services to oil & gas companies cur-rently operating in Western North Dakota. At the present time, there are 52 companies in South Dakota which provide supply chain services to the energy related indus-tries. Many of these businesses are situated in the Black Hills, including H2E, an environmental consulting company located here in Spearfish. This is the 2nd year Spearfish has attended the conference to help market the region to over 400 exhibitors and 3,500 atten-dees. As the oil and gas industries continue to explore and find new reserves in places like North Dakota, Wyoming and Colo-rado; the Black Hills is uniquely positioned to provide companies with a central location to serve each of these emerging markets. In addition, because labor shortage issues in these areas con-tinue to drive-up business costs, the Black Hills is an attractive option whereby companies can more easily hire employees with the necessary skill sets. Companies like WL Plastics, Permian Tank and Pipeline Plastics are examples of businesses which have recently moved to the Black Hills in ordered to leverage these competitive advantages. Currently there are over 10,000 oil producing wells in North Dakota and state geologists are estimating that an additional 40,000 wells will need to be drilled in order to fully realize the pro-duction capacity of the Bakken formation. These estimates
should provide industry leaders with the required confidence to make long-term investment deci-sions which support the production oil and gas, while also allowing more opportunities for Spear-fish businesses to provide needed service to com-panies and consumers alike in the oil rich areas of North Dakota. When is comes to money, black is the new green, and like the Missouri River, it’s flowing at record rates from the North to the South.

Director
While attending the Williston Petroleum Conference, Spearfish Economic Development shared in the oppor-tunity to meet with representatives from Norway’s Inter-national Trade Commission.
