Eighth Season at Temple

Coaching Staff

Brian Quinn, a four‐year letterwinner at Temple(1987‐90) and a professional golfer for 16 years, is in hiseighth season as head golf coach at TU. Quinn won 17professional tournaments and played on the Asian PGA,South African PGA and South American PGA Tours. Heis currently is the director of instruction at the BQ GolfAcademy in Conshohocken, PA. In just over a seasonand a half.

Quinn, who has guided the Temple to four tour‐nament titles prior to the 2014‐15 season, has quickly re‐turned the Owls to a program to be reckoned with atthe conference and regional level.

In his first fall campaign (2007), Quinn directed theOwls to a pair of second place finishes at the Bucknell In‐vitational and Mount St. Mary's. Other highlights fromthe 2007‐08 campaign included the program's first‐everCoSIDA Academic All‐American and Cleveland Golf All‐America Scholar. Three players won a combined sevenAtlantic 10 weekly awards, including a total of fiveRookie of the Week honors from Sasha Bozic and An‐drew Mason.

Quinn followed up that success in 2008‐09 byleading the Owls to their first tournament win since2005 with a first place showing at the 15‐team Big 5 In‐vitational. The Owls also placed fourth in The McLaugh‐lin and sixth in ODU/Seascape Invitational. In the spring,Quinn guided his Owls to their best place at the A‐10Championships since 2002, finishing fourth. Two TUgolfers, Andrew Mason and Eric Plisko, earned all‐con‐

ference honors, marking the first time that two Templeplayers received that accolade since 2003. Plisko andKevin Busteed would later be named to the PING all‐re‐gion team.

After the fall of 2008, Temple was ranked as highas it has been since 2003‐04 in the GolfStat rankings, thanks to Quinn's tutelage.

In the spring of 2008, Quinn's charges fired theirbest 54‐hole score at the Atlantic 10 Championship since2002 (877, +13) to finish 7th. The score was 18 strokesbetter than Owls recorded in 2007.

Mason, who finished his career as a three‐time all‐A‐10 performer, would lead the Owls to another fourth‐place finish as a senior in 2011. The Owls would also wintheir second tournament under Quinn, taking the 2011URI Spring Invitational.

He has also improved the team's scheduling as theOwls now play in the prestigious Adams Cup of New‐port, one of the top falls tournaments in the Northeast, and the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate at Ohio State.

A talented recruiter, Quinn brought in BrandonMatthews to the fold in the fall of 2012 and the fresh‐man from DuPont, Pa, quickly etched his name in theTemple record books. Matthews would earn all‐Atlantic10 Conference, Rookie of the Year and a spot as an al‐ternate at the U.S. Open in his phenomenal year. Healso advanced to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur

Championship,

In 2013‐14, Matthews would continue to improvehis game, earning First Team All‐American Athletic Con‐ference honors as well as an at‐large selection to theNCAA Championship field. Matthews, who tied forfourth in The American Championship, compiled a 71.5stroke average for the season. He had eight Top 5 fin‐ishes over 12 events with a win at the Barnabas HealthIntercollegiate

Quinn played four seasons under Temple Hall ofFame head coach John MacDonald, earning All‐Atlantic10 honors as a senior in 1990. He helped the Owls to theNCAA Tournament in 1987 and to a pair of NCAA EastRegionals in 1989 and 1990. The team also won theECAC Championship and was second at A‐10s in 1990.

The Northborough, MA native won 17 profes‐sional tournaments, including most recently the 2003Massachusetts Open Championship. Quinn also wonthe Greater Portland Open with a course‐record 11‐under par 61, a record that still stands today at the River‐side Golf Course. He was forced to retire from playingafter a back injury in 2004. He then founded the BQ GolfAcademy in Conshohocken, PA where he is the directorof instruction.

Quinn is on the board of directors for the AM8Foundation of fellow Temple Owl Aaron McKie and theFirst Tee of Philadelphia.

HISTORY

One of the most successful teamsat Temple, the Owls golf team isperennially one of the teams to beatin the region.

1971–2001: The MacDonaldYears

John MacDonald took over thecoaching reins in the fall of 1971 fromhis coach, Malcolm (Mac) Strow, whohad been directing the Temple golfprogram since 1952. In MacDonald’sfirst 14 seasons with the Owls, theteam competed almost exclusively indual matches. MacDonald can count ontwo hands the number of matches theOwls lost during that time. He coachedTemple to an amazing 139‐9 record inthe dual match format.

He started his coaching career withan 11‐2 record and a Middle AtlanticConference (MAC) Championship. Thetwo losses were by a combined total offive strokes. Joe Drygas was the firstgolfer to represent Temple in the indi‐vidual NCAA Tournament.

1973: First Undefeated SeasonTemple golf recorded its first un‐

defeated season in 1973, going 11‐0.Unfortunately, the Owls could not re‐peat as MAC Champion, losing the titleby one stroke. Walter Brown receivedAll‐America recognition, the first of 22such honors by 11 different Templegolfers during MacDonald’s tenure. Healso set the school record of 63 at theYale Invitational, a mark that stillstands today. Both Brown and GaryHardin, the son of former Temple headfootball coach Wayne Hardin, partici‐pated individually in the NCAA Tourna‐ment. Hardin went on to join the PGATour in 1981.

1974: First Trip to NCAAsThe 1974 season saw the Owls ac‐

complish more milestones, as theteam captured the MAC title and theautomatic berth to the NCAA tourna‐ment that went along with it. The

Owls also went undefeated (12‐0)for the second straight season, whichstretched the team’s undefeated streakto a then school‐record 30 matches. Atthe NCAAs, Mark Carrigan won the driv‐ing championship with a monstrous 313‐yard shot.

1975: #1 Ranking and EIGAC Title The Owls captured their first Eastern

Intercollegiate Golf Association Champi‐onship in 1975, giving them the No. 1ranking in the East and another NCAATournament appearance. FreshmanRandy Stevenson became the first Owl tomake the cut in the individual NCAA Tour‐nament. The team stretched its winningstreak to 37 matches before losing toLehigh by three strokes. The team com‐piled a mark of 13‐2 and captured theteam’s first East Coast Conference (ECC)Championship.

1976Temple repeated as Eastern Champi‐

ons and NCAA Tournament entrants. TheOwls were undefeated again, going 10‐0in dual matches.

1977The Cherry and White had a good sea‐

son, once again going undefeated (8‐0). ByMacDonald’s standards, it was not a greatseason. After finishing fifth at the Easterns,Temple did not qualify as a team for theNCAA Tournament. Stevenson repre‐sented Temple in the NCAA individual tour‐nament.

1978The Owls were undefeated (9‐0), won

the ECC Championship and again partici‐pated in the NCAA Tournament. Steven‐son and Jack Hubbert earned All‐Americastatus, marking the first of six consecutiveseasons that a pair of Owls were All‐Amer‐icans.

1979: Best to Date The 1979 season was the best in Tem‐

ple history. The Owls won the ECC andEastern Championships, participated in theNCAA Tournament, had two more All‐Americans (including freshman Kevin Klier, who would become the Owls’ first four‐time All‐American) and finished 17th in thecountry.

He then was selectedto participate to compete at theNCAA Championships, becoming thefirst Temple golfer chosen as an at‐large competitor.

American athletic conference

Not entirely unlike the nation that provides itsnamesake, the American Athletic Conference wasborn from an ideal in which members with ambi‐tious goals are provided with the means to succeedin their quests for excellence.

With roots that extend to three conferences, the American Athletic Conference membership in2014‐15 consists of 11 institutions: the University ofCentral Florida, the University of Cincinnati, East Car‐olina University, the University of Connecticut, theUniversity of Houston, the University of Memphis, the University of South Florida Southern MethodistUniversity, Temple University, Tulane University andthe University of Tulsa.

The 2015‐16 season sees the U.S. Naval Acad‐emy join the ranks in football only.

Under the leadership of commissioner MikeAresco, The American, which operated as the BigEast Conference from 1979 to 2013, has immedi‐ately taken a place at the forefront of Division I ath‐letics, with schools that have played in four BowlChampionship Series games, won four NCAA men’sbasketball titles since 1999, and won nine NCAAwomen’s basketball championships since 1995.

Two American Athletic Conference footballteams were ranked in the top 15 of the final 2013Associated Press poll. Five were selected for bowlgames, including UCF, which won the Tostitos Fi‐esta Bowl and finished the season ranked No. 10nationally. The conference produced 14 playerswho received All‐America recognition by a majoroutlet.

The American had four players chosen in thefirst round of the 2014 NFL Draft, trailing only theSEC and the ACC among FBS conferences. UCFquarterback Blake Bortles highlighted a group of 12American Athletic Conference players chosen whenhe was taken No. 3 overall by the JacksonvilleJaguars.

The success of The American in Year 1 was notlimited to the gridiron. UConn won NCAA titles inboth men’s and women’s basketball. The confer‐ence had the best postseason winning percentageof any league in men’s basketball, while The Amer‐ican produced top‐10 teams in baseball, men’s soc‐cer and men’s golf and sent half of its participatingteams to the NCAA Softball Championship.

The American Athletic Conference holds tele‐vision partnerships with ESPN and CBS Sports which

will give the conference unprecedented national ex‐posure. The football portion of the contract, whichbegins in the 2014 season, calls for nearly 90 per‐cent of conference‐controlled games on nationalbroadcast or national cable platforms. The firstAmerican Athletic Conference Football Champi‐onship, which will be played in 2015, will be carriedeither on ABC or ESPN on Championship Saturday.

In men’s basketball, the television deal calls forall conference‐controlled games to be televised, with more than 63 percent slotted for nationalbroadcast or national cable – a minimum of 107games. The entire postseason tournament will betelevised, including the championship game, whichwill be either on ABC or ESPN. Sixty percent of theAmerican’s women’s basketball games will be car‐ried on either national cable, regional sports net‐works or ESPN3.

American Athletic Conference teams will haveaccess to the pinnacle of college football’s postsea‐son structure. An American representative wouldbe chosen for the College Football Playoff semifi‐nals if it is among the top four teams following theregular season. Otherwise, the league would placeits champion in either the Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowlor Peach Bowl if it is ranked higher than the cham‐pions of Conference USA, the Mid‐American Con‐ference, the Mountain West Conference and theSun Belt Conference.

Additionally, The American has announcedprimary or secondary partnerships with 12 bowlsfor the next six‐year cycle, ensuring multiple annualmatchups against the nation’s top conferences andproviding desirable postseason destinations tomember institutions and their fans.

The American Athletic Conference adminis‐ters to its membership from a state‐of‐the‐art officelocated in Providence, R.I. The location of the con‐ference headquarters – just steps from the city’sAmtrak station and 10 minutes from T.F. Green In‐ternational Airport gives the conference easy ac‐cess to its member schools.

The conference headquarters is equippedwith a complete video production studio, serving asthe home of the American Digital Network, andsmall‐ and large‐scale meeting rooms to accom‐modate the many coaches’ and administrators’meetings held on‐site each year.
