WHY BATTLING BISHOPS? The nickname “The Battling Bishops” dates to 1925; before then Ohio Wesleyan University’s teams were simply known as “The Red and Black,” or sometimes as “The Method-ists.” Ohio Wesleyan is affiliated with the United Methodist Church, and long has produced many of its bishops. By April, 1925, according to that issue of the Alumni Magazine, the present name had finally been derived. “Ohio sports writers have been at a loss,” the magazine reported. “There are countless colleges throughout the country claim-ing red and black as their colors, and 14 Methodist colleges in Ohio alone.” Pi Delta Epsilon journalism fraternity therefore sponsored a contest, and the winning nickname, “The Bat-tling Bishops,” was “placed before the sports writers of the state as the teams’ official title.” Senior Harold Thomas of Lima submitted the winning entry. The new nickname must have provided inspiration. The 1925 football team, under George Gauthier, “The Little Giant,” went 7-1-1. Its only loss came to Ohio State by a 10-3 score, and it tied Syracuse, 3-3, en route to winning Ohio Conference and Big Six championships.

Seventh-year head coach Ian Miller is looking for experienced leaders and new faces to meld together to return Ohio Wesleyan to the top of the North Coast Athletic Conference standings. “We feel very confident in our experienced leadership, on and off the course,” Miller said. “We also know that our new players will have an immediate impact on the success of the team. They have all been working hard through the summer and up to this point, and

last year’s NCAC championship tournaments, finishing 27th in the conference standings. His average of 79.88 strokes per round ranked second on the team. Thieman tied for 35th place in last year’s NCAC standings. His average of 81.32 strokes per round ranked fourth on the team. Shahrokhi golfed all 24 rounds last season and finished with an average of 80.96 shots per round, ranking third on the team. He fin-ished 38th in the NCAC standings. Junior Jamie Litzler is another returning letterman. Litzler aver-aged 83.00 strokes per round in limited action last year. During the 2013-14 season, he averaged 82.81 shots per round. Freshman Adam Armstrong, a first-team all-conference selec-tion in high school; freshman A.J. Outcalt, a 2-time all-conference selection in high school; and senior Will Sulcebarger round out the Ohio Wesleyan roster. Ohio Wesleyan opens the fall season at the Transylvania Fall Invi-tational on Sept. 5-6. The schedule continues at the third Battle at the Brook in Sandusky, Ohio, on Sept. 12-13 before the 25th annual Gor-din Classic at Columbus Country Club Sept. 28-29. The Wooster Fall Invitational follows on Oct. 10-11 and the fall season wraps up with the O’Briant-Jensen Memorial in Greensboro, N.C, on Oct. 19-20. The spring season commences with the Taylor Made-adidas In-tercollegiate tournament in Beau-fort, S.C. The North Coast Athletic Conference champi-onship will be hosted by Hiram and Wooster.

we are excited to kick off our sea-son. “Winning an NCAC title is our long-term goal — a tall order given the depth of the league — but we’re not going to back down from that. That is what our players want, and what our program expects.” Leading the returnees for Miller and the Bishops are senior Ben Thieman and sophomores Zack Miller and Zach Shahrokhi. Zack Miller is the Bishops’ highest returning finisher from 20

Ohio Wesleyan President Rock Jones and Denison President Dale Knobel display the 2008-09 NCAC All-Sports Trophies. Ohio Wesleyan and Denison finished in a dead heat in the 2008-09 all-sports race, marking the first all-sports tie in conference history.

ABOUT THE NCAC Ohio Wesleyan University is a charter member of the North Coast Athletic Conference, which began competition in the 1984-85 academic year. Other charter members are Allegheny College, Case Western Reserve University, Denison University, Kenyon College, Oberlin College and the College of Wooster. Wittenberg Univer-sity joined the NCAC in 1988, Earlham College joined in 1988 and remains an affiliate member in field hockey, Hiram College and Wabash College joined the NCAC in 1998, and DePauw University joined the NCAC in 2010. The NCAC’s 10 members believe academic and athletic excellence can co-exist, with no undue overem-phasis on athletics. They also believe the principle of balance is important in athletic programs at the Division III level, with no “major” or “minor” sports in compari-son with any other, but all equally worthwhile. Equity for both men’s and women’s sports is a founding and standard principle. The NCAC’s 23 championship sports includes 11 for men and 12 for women, the latter figure leading all Division III conferences in the country. When at least 5 Conference institutions sponsor a varsity sport, the NCAC conducts championship play and hon-ors the champion.

During the NCAC’s 31 years of competition, the league has established itself as one of the most competi-tive in the nation. A total of 61 teams in all 23 sports were represented in national competition last year, with one team winning an NCAA Division III championship to raise the conference’s 31-year total to 65. In addition, 219 student-athletes from around the league earned All-America and/or Academic All-America® honors.

Strimer Invitational The Strimer Memorial Invitational honors the memory of coach Bob Strimer, who was involved in Ohio Wesleyan ath-letics for over half a century. Strimer came to Ohio Wes-leyan in 1941, and after 3 years in the U.S. Navy, returned for good in 1945. He was named head basketball coach in 1946 and held that position for 12 seasons, winning 1 Ohio Athletic Conference championship. He became head golf coach in 1948 and guided the Bishops to a pair of OAC titles in 7 sea-sons. In 1955, Strimer stepped down as golf coach to become Ohio Wesleyan’s athletics director and served in that position until he retired in 1977. During his tenure on the Battling Bishop staff, he also served as head baseball coach as well as an assistant coach in football and track. After his retirement, Strimer remained active in athletics, alumni and development affairs for over 2 decades. Originally played during the spring, the Strimer Invita-tional was held during the fall from 1984-96 and returned to the spring beginning with the 1997-98 season.

GordinClassic The Gordin Classic an-nually matches 12 of the best NCAA Division III teams in one of the nation’s most prestigious small-college tournaments. Hosted by Ohio Wesleyan and currently played during the fall, the tournament features many — if not all — of the top 10 finishers from the previ-ous spring's NCAA Division III championship tournament. Conceived as the opening tournament of the spring, the Gordin Classic was the final tournament of the fall from the 1995-96 season to the 2010-11 season, and currently is played at the end of September at Columbus Country Club, the tournament’s home since 2012. The tournament is named after longtime Ohio Wes-leyan coach Dick Gordin. Gordin, who served as the Bishops’ golf coach from 1955-93, guided 22 of his last 25 teams to the NCAA Division III or College Division tournaments, bringing home 6 top-5 finishes in his last 8 years, including runner-up finishes in 1990 and 1993 and thirds in 1989 and 1991. Ohio Wesleyan won a total of 12 league titles in 5 different decades under Gordin. His teams won 7 Ohio Ath-letic Conference championships and 5 North Coast Athletic Conference crowns. Gordin was named NCAA Division III Coach of the Year in 1987 and 1993.

HOME COURSES OF THE BISHOPS Ohio Wesleyan is fortunate to have 4 championship-caliber courses which the Bishops consider their home courses.

Oakhaven Golf Club(par 71, 6675 yards, rating 70.9, slope 122) Oakhaven provides a challenging and diverse test, with holes varying from wide and wind-swept with large, severe greens to narrow fairways lined by thick woods and small, well-guarded greens. Oakhaven boasts one of the finest practice facilities in Ohio, consisting of approximately 200 yards of tee boxes and hitting areas complete with sheltered and heated tee buildings overlooking a lighted driving range; a large putting green, 2 chipping greens, a practice bunker and an indoor putting facility.

Delaware Golf Club(par 71, 6873 yards, rating 72.3, slope 129) This tremendous 9-hole layout of traditional Donald Ross design has undergone widespread change. Recent additions include a new practice facility, a new clubhouse, and 9 new

ATHLETIC FACILITIES The crown jewel of Ohio Wesleyan’s athletic facilities is Selby Stadium, which is the home of the football, field hockey, track & field, and men’s and women’s lacrosse contingents. Selby Stadium received a FieldTurf artificial playing surface for the 2014-15 academic year, lights for the 2010-11 academic year, and a video scoreboard in the spring of 2011, making the venue one of the most impressive among NCAA Division III institutions. Constructed in 1929, Selby also has received a new, fully-enclosed 2-level press box, new bleacher seats, and refurbished locker rooms in recent years. The facil-ity, which seats 9100 and is the fourth-largest college-owned field in NCAA Division III, was the site of the 1988 Division III men’s lacrosse championship game. Selby also houses the George Gauthier Track, an Ameritan FP surface installed for the 2006-07 academic year. The site of 20 of the first 31 North Coast Athletic Conference outdoor track & field championships, Selby is believed to be the oldest facility in the nation constructed to Olympic specifications and remaining in its original configuration. Selby Stadium and the Gauthier Track hosted the NCAA Division III outdoor track & field championships in 2011 and 2014. Across campus, the Jay Martin Soccer Complex hosts soc-cer, primarily under the lights. Widely regarded as one of the Midwest’s finest facilities for the sport, the Jay Martin Soccer Complex’s Roy Rike Field was the site of the NCAA Division III semifinals and championship game for men in 1990 and 1998 and for women in 2001. The centerpiece of Ohio Wesleyan’s athletic facilities is the Branch Rickey Physical Education Center, prized for both its size and versatility. The Richard Gordon Field House floor

holes designed by PGA Tour player Fuzzy Zoeller. Formerly known as Dornoch Golf Club, the course was the site of the 2003 NCAA Division III men’s golf championships.

Glenross Golf Club(par 70, 6552 yards, rating 70.6, slope 119) The Glenross course boasts rolling fairways, undulating greens, 50 sand bunkers, 7 ponds and a natural creek. Acres of wetlands, natural grass areas and hundreds of trees further challenge golfers and enhance the overall playing experience.

Mill Creek Golf Club(par 72, 6300 yards, rating 69.0, slope 111) Mill Creek requires accurate tee shots to often tight landing areas, as well as pinpoint accuracy with approach shots into relatively small greens. Mill Creek also has a complete practice area including a driving range, a pitching green and 2 putting greens. Mill Creek is the home course of 2003 British Open champion Ben Curtis.

was resurfaced in November 2008, and the track was refinished with a state-of-the-art encapsulated surface in December 2008. Gordon Field House hosted the first 9 NCAC indoor track & field championships. Indoor practice for fall and spring sports can be handled there as well: floor space is larger than a football field, accommodating 4 courts for tennis, basketball and volleyball. Branch Rickey Arena, seating 1450, hosts varsity basket-ball and volleyball contests. Also in the Center are 5 handball/racquetball courts, a squash court, offices, locker rooms and lounges. Offices and locker rooms also are part of Edwards Gym-nasium, which is connected by tunnel to the Rickey Center. Remodeling in Edwards has recently included an expanded strength facility. The men’s and women’s swimming teams compete in the Meek Aquatics and Recreation Center, a 10-lane, geothermally heated facility that opened in October 2010. Softball is played at Margaret Sagan Field, which opened during the 2008 season. Baseball is played at Littick Field, site of the 2003 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional. Tennis is played at the Luttinger Family Tennis Center, a complex of 6 outdoor courts that opened in the fall of 2010, and 6 outdoor courts across the street where the 1978 NCAA Divi-sion III championships were held. The cross country teams run home meets at nearby Liberty Park. The men’s golf team plays home tournaments at Oakhav-en Golf Club, north of Delaware, and the women’s golf team plays home tournaments at Mill Creek Golf Club in Ostrander, west of Delaware.
