They’re Back! Finally, they are back where they belong. It was such a lovely experience to be in the front office on Monday morning and all of a sudden you could start to hear faint murmuring coming from the quad. Eventually the faint murmuring turned into loud chatting and lots of laughing as students happily met up with each other again. There was a positive buzz in the air that was infectious. It was wonderful to start off every morning with a year meeting, that also allowed for physical

distancing requirements. It was important for us to meet together, especially since we had a lot of information to give to our students and it was important that the information was consistent between all year groups.

I was particularly impressed that students knew where to go despite many changes to locations and that they came thoroughly prepared with their charged laptops. Uniform was almost perfect, though a couple of girls must have had a growth spurt over the holidays because their skirts had definitely crept up.

Physical Distancing Late last Friday afternoon the Department of Education released their new guidelines related to physical distancing within a school context. There are certain activities that are not to go ahead at this stage; including school excursions and certain sporting events. The Department has provided schools with guidelines, as suggestions, though there are no requirements to do so. Underpinning these guidelines is a desire for school to run as normal, while still providing students with a clean safe learning environment. We will continue to remind students at our year assemblies on how to keep themselves safe whilst at school and ensure that they are familiar with the steps we have put into place. Please do not send your child to school with any cold or flu like symptoms. We do not have the resources to keep them or others safe. The department have instructed schools to send sick students straight home. Changes to the 2020 HSC I have already assured Year 12 that they will have the opportunity to receive their HSC credential this year. This will be a relief to you, I'm sure. Students will then be able to continue with the next chapter of their lives in 2021 whether that be university, TAFE or work. Please know that this is a guarantee. There are of course some changes to assessments and exams because of the nature of the circumstances before us. NESA (the governing body that administers and coordinates the HSC) has determined that the following will occur immediately: • requirements for the English Extension 2 Multimedia short film have been altered • some performance exams in drama, dance and music have been cancelled or modified • requirement for students to undertake NESA-mandated VET work placements has been lifted • due dates extended and teachers to mark major projects in Technologies and Visual Arts

The Redgum Issue 1 Term 2, 15 May 2020

• more time given to schools and parents to submit evidence for disability provisions for the exams • schools given the power to make decisions about the number and weighting of HSC formal

assessment tasks • Written exams will start 20 October and finish 11 November 2020. • Oral language exams will start 15 August and finish on 19 September. • HSC results will be released on 18 December 2020.

As a school we will communicate any changes and the strategies we have put into place. Enhanced Cleaning In accordance with the announcement made by the Department of Education Secretary, Mark Scott, the school in conjunction with our cleaning contractors have been busy organising “day cleaning” to commence at school from Monday 11 May.

Some of the additional measures include:

• additional programmed cleaning of bathrooms after the morning recess • Cleaning of various touch points, taps and basins • Replenishing supplies (soap, paper towels etc) • disinfecting and cleaning of bubblers between morning and lunch recess • Cleaning and disinfecting frequently used high-touch surfaces, external balustrades and internal

stairwell handrails at regular intervals throughout the day with a detergent solution or detergent/disinfectant wipes.

Please note this is on top of our regular daily cleaning. As a school we are including the cleaning of student work spaces as part of the routine for every period. Anzac Assembly I hope that you all had the opportunity to view Glenwood HS Anzac Day Assembly which was posted onto the school’s website. Even though this year was a little different, it was wonderful that the school community made the conscientious decision to take time to remember all Australians who served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. Again, I would like to acknowledge the following for ensuring our assembly still happened: Mr Leaver; our HSIE staff; Mr Lewis, Mr Good and Lachlan Murray for providing technical support; and our wonderful Prefects. Thank you for helping to ensuring that we don’t forget. Lest we forget.

Canteen The school canteen will be operational during Phase 1. The canteen has provided the school with a detailed overview of how they will manage services at the canteen during the Covid-19 pandemic. I have included their procedure at the end of this newsletter for your re-assurance.

Glenwood You may recall that the P&C applied for a community grant and were successful in 2018. The grant was to build an indoor/outdoor gym for the students. The process has been a lengthy one to say the least, and I will not bore you all the problems we encountered along the way, but rather, celebrate that we are nearly at the end! The school has contributed a substantial amount of school funds to have a space that will be very engaging for all of our students. I have included some photos, but we look forward to sharing more photos with you all once the equipment arrives. We are hoping that the delivery of the equipment will coincide with the relaxing of social distance requirements in the relation to fitness centres and gyms.

Good News Stories I thought I would finish up with a good news story, because I think we all deserve one! I would like to introduce Frankie. Frankie is our newest additional to the Support Unit. She is an 11-week-old Tibetan Terrier. Tibetan Terriers are known for making great companion dogs that love being around people and are adaptable to different environments, making her ideal to become our Educational Support Dog. Educational Support Dogs can be a fantastic addition to any learning environment. The dogs can provide support to students in a number of ways, including offering emotional support, recognising signs of anxiety, and helping improve concentration and communication skills as well as reducing the incidence of antisocial behaviour and bullying. Frankie will grow into a medium size dog, reaching approximately 40cm tall. Frankie loves coming to school and greeting everyone in the morning and interacting with all the students. She will undergo training as she gets older to ensure that she learns how to offer emotional and educational support. The students are thrilled and are absolutely loving having Frankie at school and it's been great to see how they interact with her.

Finally, can I thank you all for your ongoing support and understanding. Without exception, you have been so thoroughly encouraging and affirming of the many changes we have needed to make to ensure our staff, students and families are safe during these difficult times. To acknowledge the work, you have been doing at home, you all have received a Principal’s Award. Myself and the Year Advisers presented this prestigious award to Mrs Karen Bonnell, P&C President, who accepted on your behalf. I have a funny feeling this one will not be hanging on the fridge. On behalf of the school I would to say thank you for all you have been doing to support your children. We understand how challenging it is learning new platforms and taking on the role of teacher while maintaining your homes, families and jobs of your own. We sincerely thank you for your partnership, grace, and patience throughout this time. With approximately 85% of Australian children currently learning remotely, the impact of children’s significant access to digital technologies is a key concern for both parents and educators. What does the research tell us, and how can we best educate our children from home? We’re kicking off the week sharing our five major prize winners’ photos from our Wild Snaps photo competition!

Every day this week, you’ll see us post a different photo (in no particular order) from each of the winners. We’d first like to say a warm thank you to everyone who submitted their entries. It was an incredibly difficult decision and we were all in awe at the talent!

We hope you enjoyed the competition and the chance to explore nature around your own homes. Keep an eye out for when the Wild Snaps photo competition reopens soon. Let’s start with this absolutely incredible shot of a Rainbow Lorikeet from Lia (Stage 5) from Glenwood High School NSW, titled ‘Oh, that hit the spot!’. Lia managed to capture this stunning bird preening itself on a tree in her backyard.

Did you know that most birds will preen several times a day to clean and straighten their feathers? It’s important for birds to keep their feathers in top condition!

Congratulations to Lia—Year 9 for your winning photo “Oh, that hit the spot” in Taronga Education Wild Snaps Photography competition. Well done!
