Farewell Ms Rose and Mr Mulcahy At the end of 2015 we sadly farewelled Ms Elizabeth Rose from the Computing Studies Faculty. Ms Rose was a wonderful addition to the Glenwood High School staff in 2008. Since that time she has held the positions of Computer Coordinator, relieving Head Teacher Administration, relieving Head Teacher Teaching and Learning, Promotions Team Chairperson and NSW Teachers’ Federation Representative, along with being a dynamic classroom practitioner of computing studies. Ms Rose made a huge impact on the learning environment and positive culture at Glenwood and will be sorely missed. She has taken up the position of TAS coordinator at The Ponds High School and I am already aware that the current staff are very impressed with her passion, dedication and professionalism at her new school. Hopefully, she will be back to visit frequently as she is not too far away. Mr Ashley Mulcahy received a transfer to the Science Faculty at Glenmore Park High School in the last

few minutes of the last day of 2015. Mr Mulcahy had been with us for four years and during that time

worked in a range of welfare capacities as well as teaching Science to hundreds of students. His

enthusiastic and dynamic approach in the classroom was infectious and many students shared his

love of the subject. He also taught ‘Rock and Water’ a program that teaches anger management skills

to boys. He was also an amazing House Captain Coordinator who inspired our Year 11 student

leaders to think outside the square by raising money for those less fortunate across the globe. I’m sure

you will agree that Mr Mulcahy will be missed by us all.

A Very Warm Welcome To Our New Staff Mrs Noelene Callaghan, HSIE Faculty, from Rooty Hill High School. Ms Seda Sener, Science Faculty. Mr Amrit Singh, Learning and Support Teacher, from Seven Hills High School. Mr Iqbal Singh, Science Faculty, from Concord High

School.

2015 Celebration Assembly

'It was wonderful to welcome our 2015 HSC high achievers back to school on Tuesday 16th

March 2016 for a celebration assembly. The school community is extremely proud of the

academic excellence displayed by Year 12, 2015, and the whole student body enjoyed the

opportunity to congratulate them all. The assembly was also a great motivator for younger

students who are now inspired to focus on developing the creative and analytical skills

necessary for their own future academic success.”

FROM THE DESKS OF THE DEPUTY PRINCIPALS

“Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom.”

-George Washington Carver

The student body at Glenwood High School is to be commended on their smooth transition into their

2016 studies. They look fantastic in their uniforms, as they eagerly work on improving their skills,

knowledge and understanding. They are a testament to their families, who support them in their

learning. We have so many wonderful programs, events and initiatives already in place this term for

them to excel in a range of areas: academic, sporting and cultural. We encourage our students to

reach for experiences outside of their comfort zones as they endeavour to achieve their personal

best.

HSC 2015 Wrap-Up

We ended the 2015 school year with some impressive HSC results that have made our entire

school community very proud. Twenty students achieved an ATAR of over 90.00, based on strong

HSC results. There were 54 Band 6 results across the variety of courses offered at Glenwood High

School. Two students were placed on the Premier’s Honour Roll for achieving Band 6 results in all

of their courses. Our School Captain, David Badea, was ranked thirteenth in NSW for Legal Studies.

For Dance, Emily Matthews was nominated for Callback, a showcase for exemplary performances.

Two students, our School Captain, Angelica Ojinnaka, and one of our prefects, Gursewak Singh,

were selected for early entry Macquarie University’s through the Global Youth Leadership

Scholarship.

Full credit is given to the teaching staff of Glenwood High School, who consistently put students first

and work tirelessly to provide additional opportunities for students. The class of 2015 has continued

to meet our community’s high expectations and we look forward to continued academic success.

We know that parents move their families into our school’s drawing area in order to give their

children the best possible education and this is reflected in our achievements.

Programs, Events and Initiatives At Glenwood High School, students are offered the opportunity to explore their potential beyond the

classroom. Term 1, 2016, has seen the launch of a vast array of programs, event and initiatives for

our students to become involved in.

Academic

Pen and Paper: creative writing workshops is a whole school initiative facilitated by the Glenwood

English faculty where students participate in an enrichment program to encourage their ability to

communicate their individual, cultural and imaginative stories. This extra-curricular program is

designed to encourage students to develop their sustained writing skills as well as respect the

voices and stories of those in their community. Through the support of ‘Pen and Paper’ students

participate in school, local and national writing competitions to showcase their developing skill, as

well as work on individual writing goals in an inclusive and supportive environment.

Debating: Nominations have been sought and teams are being constructed and trained to

participate in inter-school debating. Over the years, Glenwood High School has competed

successfully against comprehensive and selective schools.

As part of our debating and public speaking skills development, Year 7 will soon be preparing to

compete in an intra-school debating competition. This traditional event is an enjoyable and rewarding

experience.

Homework Centre: Glenwood High School operates a homework centre on Tuesday afternoons

from 3pm-4:15pm in the library. The centre is supported by staff and ex-students who offer their time

to tutor any student requiring assistance. Students who would like a quiet place to complete their

coursework and assignments are also welcome to utilise out library’s resources.

Maths Help: 2016 is the pilot year of this initiative. Mathematics Help Sessions run during lunch

times on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays for all students from Year 7 to Year 12. They can bring

their lunch and access expert tuition from the Mathematics Faculty. This is ideal for those struggling

to attain some of the finer concepts, as well as those who just need a little boost.

Leadership

There are numerous opportunities for students to become involved in leadership at Glenwood High

School. Assuming these roles often ensures future success for those who chose to become active

citizens at Glenwood High School. New avenues can open up, such as early entry to university or

dream job offers. All students are encouraged to involve themselves positively and productively in

student life. Some initiatives to date include:

MATES (Peer Mediators): Year 10 and Year 11 students are offered the opportunity to refine and

utilise their leadership, communication and ability to work well as part of a team to be trained as peer

mediators. The skills that they are able to hone in this initiative are invaluable and sought by future

employers.

Student Representative Council (SRC): Nominations were sought earlier this term for positions on

this key student leadership body. Open to all years, the SRC provides a voice for students and the

avenue to develop and be involved in community events, such as the Valentine’s Day Event.

Participation in the SRC often prepares students for other leadership positions, such as House

Captain and membership of the School Prefect body in the senior years.

Sisterhood: The Sisterhood Club is many things to many girls but it is mainly a circle of friendships,

support and strength. Led by a group of young women, the Sisterhood meet at lunchtime on

Thursdays and enjoy activities, food and fun because…. you can never have too many sisters.

Volunteering: This officially recognised volunteering program is open to student in Years 9 and 10.

Students are supported and acknowledged for their contributions and the work they do in

strengthening our community. Clean-up Australia Day at Glenwood High School, to be held on 4th

March, 2016, will be the first major school-based volunteering event. We are proud of our student

volunteers for their engagement on a community level and enthusiasm for ‘giving back’. True

qualities of future-focused citizens.

Blacktown Council Youth Ambassador Program: nominations have been sought from the school

Page 7: THE REDGUM - Glenwood High School€¦ · best. HSC 2015 Wrap-Up We ended the 2015 school year with some impressive HSC results that have made our entire school community very proud.

for this prestigious position, one that will open doors for the successful nominee. Students who have

involved themselves proactively and productively in school life and making our community a better

place for all are prime contenders for this position.

Sporting

Continuing our tradition of developing sportsmanship, as well as sporting prowess, in our students,

staff across the school have volunteered their time to organise, co-ordinate and coach a variety of

sporting teams. Our students are encouraged to try out for grade teams and knockout teams, as well

as participate in carnivals, our most recent being the swimming carnival. Our sportspeople are often

commended by members of the public and our opposition’s coaching team on their fairness and good

behaviour. They are a credit to their families and the school.

Aside from grade and school sport, we provide extra curricula sporting opportunities cater to a wide

range of interests and abilities. We encourage our students to take advantage of all opportunities to

maintain a healthy, balanced lifestyle, which, so far this term, have included:

For boys, the Open Boys Sydney West Baseball Tournament, Open Boys Cricket, Under 16 CHS

Rugby Union, Macquarie Cup Touch Football, the Junior Boys (Years 7 & 8) Milo Blast T20 Cricket

Tournament, Macquarie Cup Basketball Boys (Years 9-12), Sydney West Under 15's Boys AFL and

Tennis.

For girls, Girls’ Open Touch Football, Girls’ Open Knockout Soccer, Girls’ Open Knockout Softball,

Macquarie Cup Basketball Girls (Years 9-12), Macquarie Cup Girls’ Netball Competition and the Junior

Girls’ (Years 7 & 8) T20 Cricket Tournament.

General events to date have included the All Schools’ Triathlon and the Macquarie Zone Swimming

Carnival. Our next whole school carnival will be the school athletics carnival early next term. We are

proud of our students who have a go and involve themselves, whether they have gone on the further

levels, or simply ‘tried out’. Striving for their personal best in all things is something to be proud of.

Thank you for your parental support. Thank you to the teachers who take the time to create these

opportunities. In partnership, we will be able to continue to instil in our students an awe for learning

and always being the best version of themselves.

Cultural

In 2016, Glenwood High School continues to provide culturally enriching initiatives in which students

can continue to develop their interests. Such experiences help deepen cultural understanding and

create a harmonious, inclusive environment in which our community can flourish. Students can share

their interests at lunchtimes in Game on! and Dr Who Club, or they can explore their other interests in:

Art Club: Art Club is held on Wednesday afternoons from 2.50pm to 4.15pm. It provides a structured

environment in which students can express their creativity. All students are welcome to come and

practise their artmaking. All that is required is parental permission.

Musical: Preparations for this year’s production on Grease are well under way. Students are working

hard during sport sessions to create a spectacular production. As the time approaches, the performers

and stagehands will commit themselves to weekend preparations. The excitement surrounding the

musical will peak when the production is held in June. All are invited to come along and support our

wonderful performers and crew who have committed to this project with impressive dedication.

Harmony Day: A key event on out cultural calendar, Glenwood High School will be celebrating

Harmony Day on March 11th. An inspirational cultural celebration featuring student performers, food

stalls and activities, this event is enjoyed by all.

All in all, students have a range of events, initiatives and activities in which to immerse themselves

whilst they are at Glenwood High School. Above are some examples, though not the complete list, of

what we offer. Their involvement reinforces a lifelong love of learning and helps them to value their role

as active community members. Well done to those who take up these opportunities to be the best

version of themselves.

Opal Card

School Opal Card - Notification of Changes of Details Students who have already been issued with a School Opal card must ensure that they keep their details up-to-date. If any details change (e.g. address, shared parental arrangements, school etc.) you must complete the online application form http://www.transportnsw.info/school-students and tick the box - Current School travel pass holder with change of details. Question 7 must be completed to notify the changes. The School Opal card is only for travel to and from school. Students travelling to other destinations must purchase Child/Youth Opal Card. Find out more and apply at opal.com.au or purchase from an Opal retailer. All enquiries please contact Transport for NSW on 131 500 or http://www.transportnsw.info/school-students.

BYOD

Following a few teething problems, Year 7 devices have now been commissioned. Year 8 devices are

currently in the process of being commissioned. Students have been told in advance when their turn is.

They need to make sure that they have their device on the day, along with their completed Student

Agreement Form.

On the school’s website, http://www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/byod, there is a new and

improved guide for obtaining the free software from the NSW Students WebStore. Please follow the

guidelines carefully. If problems persist, please contact Mr Napoleoni.

Uniform

Glenwood High School is proudly a uniform school and we expect that all students will show pride in

their appearance and dress in the correct school uniform each day. By doing so, students indicate to

their teachers that they are ‘ready for learning’, one of our Positive Behaviour for Learning values, and

have the right mindset for learning. Our school uniform policy can be accessed at this website:

http://www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/our-school/rules-policies/uniform-policy

2016 marks a change in the girls’ winter uniform. Navy blue pants are no longer school uniform. This

decision was undertaken in consultation with the Glenwood School Community and published last

year. Parents, in communications home, via such media as the school’s newsletter and website,

facebook and the GHS app, together with students, via assemblies, have been kept well-informed of

the changes. The girl’s pants will be available exclusively from the GHS uniform shop in March.

Page 9: THE REDGUM - Glenwood High School€¦ · best. HSC 2015 Wrap-Up We ended the 2015 school year with some impressive HSC results that have made our entire school community very proud.

Telephone: 9629 9577 Fax: 9629 2796 Website: www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au

The school closely monitors the wearing of the school uniform. We ask parents to assist this process

by ensuring that their child is wearing the school uniform. All students know that they are required to

arrive at school in the normal school uniform and then change into their sports uniform during the day if

they have sport or a practical PE class.

In particular, it is important that senior students model the correct wearing of the school uniform for

junior students. We have an extremely high rate of compliance with the school uniform policy and it is

fantastic to work in a school where students take pride in their appearance and, thus, demonstrate

their sense of belonging to our community.

Study Skills

Connect lessons are held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8:40am to 9am for students in all

grades. These lessons are an excellent time for students to focus on whole school goals and build

their learning power. Teachers use this time to mark the roll and deliver messages to students,

however, more importantly it is used to focus on values education and the explicit teaching of study

skills. In 2016, on Thursdays and Fridays in particular, students will focus on study skills. We are

emailing parents the study skill focus area each week so that parents can reinforce positive study skills

and habits with their children. In recent weeks, students have focused on prioritising, organising their

time, creating an effective study area and note taking. These are the skills that need to be learned

from Year 7 in order for academic success in the senior years. We encourage all parents to use the

support materials in the school diaries to reinforce study skills with their children.

Information Evening

Our annual Year 5/6 Information Evening was held on Monday, 29th February, 2016. This event

showcases our fantastic school and provides an opportunity for prospective parents to tour the school

and learn more about our educational programs and extra-curricular activities. As one of the largest

public schools in Western Sydney, we offer programs in dance, music, art, public speaking, debating,

musical theatre, leadership, camping and mentoring, to name just a few. There was a massive turnout

for this event and there is clear and ongoing support for our school in the local community. We always

enjoy meeting with parents/carers at this event and building positive relationships with families. Any

questions in relation to enrolments for 2017 should be directed to our front office.

Swimming Carnival

Our swimming carnival was held on Tuesday, 4th February, 2016. This event was ‘competitors-only’,

however, it was excellent to see the large number of students participating in this event, especially our

new Year 7 students. There is a strong commitment to sporting programs at Glenwood High School,

as demonstrated by our success in the various knock out competitions in 2015. Students are

encouraged to participate in these events and show support for their school and house.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

Glenwood High School is a Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) school. As a PBL school, we

reward positive behaviour in order to create an effective learning environment. At Glenwood High

School, we use the following core values to guide all aspects of our teaching and learning:

respect for self

respect for others

Page 10: THE REDGUM - Glenwood High School€¦ · best. HSC 2015 Wrap-Up We ended the 2015 school year with some impressive HSC results that have made our entire school community very proud.

Telephone: 9629 9577 Fax: 9629 2796 Website: www.glenwood-h.schools.nsw.edu.au

respect for property

responsibility for actions

ready for learning

These core values provide a strong basis for positive interactions between staff and students. Our

new Year 7 students have had a comprehensive introduction to our PBL system and values and have

embraced our merit system. Student achievement in a variety of contexts, including in the classroom

and on the sporting field, contribute to house points which are tallied at the end of the year.

Students in Acacia, Boronia, Coolabah and Telopea compete during the year with the winning house

being awarded the House Cup and students in that house treated to a special activity. Students are

encouraged to display house spirit during sporting carnivals and at other events which helps contribute

to the positive culture at Glenwood High School. It is great to see so many students being rewarded

for their commitment to the school and its focus on Positive Behaviour for Learning.

Attendance at School

In 2014, the NSW Minister for Education announced changes to the way in which absences are

recorded. These changes took effect from the start of 2015. The main change is that holidays taken

by students outside of school vacation periods may now be recorded as absences. This reflects the

school’s policy that students and their families should use the school holidays periods to take family

vacations. Otherwise, students miss out on crucial learning time which has an impact on their long-

term education outcomes. An article from the Sydney Morning Herald in 2014 (http://

www.smh.com.au/nsw/skipping-school-for-just-one-day-affects-naplan-results-study-finds-20140802-

zzjmr.html) demonstrates that absences from school lead to lower academic performance and there is

no ‘safe level’ of absenteeism. Every day away from school negatively affects achievement levels. If

families are considering a family vacation, they are required to apply in writing for approved leave.

Parents/carers should contact our front office for further information.

Communication with Parents

SENTRAL

The SENTRAL Parent Portal allows parents to view their child’s attendance data, and provide reasons

for absences, view their child’s timetable and relevant daily notices, as well as provide access to key

school information such as bell times and assessment policies.

To access the portal, parents require an individualised access key. This information was mailed to

parents last year. If you have not activated your portal access, please do so by following the

ADDICTED TO TECHNOLOGY

EVENING SEMINAR FOR PARENTS

held on Thursday 18th February, 2016

Glenwood High School and Wesley Mission were proud to host Collett Smart at a parent seminar on Gaming addiction on Thursday night at Glenwood High School Hall. Thank you to all who were able to attend. It was an excellent presentation. Glenwood High School has endeavoured to provide parents and school community with practical and helpful information which could support them in the many areas of raising our children. We hope that this seminar, together with the many others organised, have been of value to some of you. Collett Smart’s presentation very interesting insights into the positives and negatives of gaming and supported parents to feel confident in their role of deciding what was appropriate content for their children, of not bowing to the “everyone else has it” argument and of monitoring both the usage and content of their children’s on line activity. A key finding she presented was that just by monitoring this usage, the time on line decreases, the access to inappropriate content decreases and the negative flow on behaviours also decrease. So how do parents monitor? Computers in shared areas is a key strategy in monitoring, being able to see and walk past the screens being used is a simple strategy to monitoring what is happening. Discussions about privacy were conducted, but the core message was that for children and parents, safety trumps privacy every time. Screens of any kind including phones in student bedrooms, was reinforced as a definite area of concern and to be avoided. Another of the take home messages for me from the Collette Smart session on gaming was “children need to feel bored”. They need to experience ‘stillness’. The art of stillness is a lost one and one that is increasingly proposed as the solution to many issues experienced by both children and adults. Current theory on wellbeing for children, and adults, highlight the importance of mindfulness and stillness as part of a daily routine for general health and happiness. Many members of the audience stayed back to have further discussions with Collett and pass on extremely positive feedback to the organisers. Our thanks to Justine Hanna of Wesley Mission and Kate Joel of Glenwood high School for all the backstage work that went into making the seminar a valuable event.

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) at Glenwood High School

Dear Parent/Carer

As you are probably aware, the roll out of BYOD at Glenwood High School has already commenced, with the focus on Years 7, 8 and 10 in Term 1 and Year 9 in Term 2. I have included the Roll Out Timetable, which shows when students of a particular year can bring in their device for commissioning.

Students must wait till their allotted time frame to bring in their device for commissioning.

The Commissioning process must be followed before a student will be allowed to use a device at school. The Commissioning steps are as follows

The student brings in their device and completed Student Agreement Form to school on their allotted day. This information will be distributed to students through connect. I will also place the individual Year Timetables on the School’s Website.

The device is inspected by the TSO or myself and ticked off that it meets all minimum specifications.

The student’s name and year, as well as the device’s make, model and MAC address are recorded.

The student is given a flyer with instructions on how to connect to the school’s wireless network and a specially designed BYOD sticker will placed on the student’s laptop, indicating that the device can be used in class.

Technical assistance connecting their device is given, if needed.

Staff have been instructed not to allow any student to use a device in their class, without an official Glenwood High School BYOD sticker. Any student found in class with a device a sticker, will be asked to take their device home and follow the correct procedure.

Glenwood High School BYOD Purchase Portal

If you are not already aware, Glenwood High School has developed a BYOD purchase portal in collaboration with Core Technology Partners. The link is shown below.

https://estore.coretechnologypartners.com.au/ghs

You are not obligated to use this portal. However, it was designed to assist families with choosing a device, as all devices listed in the portal meet the minimum specifications set out in the school’s BYOD policy.

Families have the option of purchasing devices outright or using one of the other retailer options, such as paying off the device over time using Flexirent or Interest Free, at Harvey Norman for example.

For Apple purchases, students are entitled to an educational discount for purchases directly through Apple Education. You can ring Luke Corinth on 133622, Ext 28903404.

Email: [email protected]

The Apple Store at Castle Towers has also approached the school to offer an educational facility for parents. If you tell the sales person you’re from Glenwood High School you will be given the following discounts.

Note: In some cases, existing devices used at home may be suitable, with the purchase of a 5 GHz 802.11ac USB Wireless Modem for under $50. This will allow the older device to access the school’s wireless network.

If none of these options are suitable, you may qualify for a device on financial hardship grounds. The school will provide equity devices for all families who cannot afford to purchase or pay off a device.

To access this option you need to contact Mr Napoleoni by email to obtain the BYOD Assistance Scheme application form, then make an appointment to see the Principal to have your application assessed. If you meet the financial hardship requirements, your child will be provided with a device by the school.

The Glenwood High School BYOD policy is inclusive.

The school will ensure all students are able to participate in the enhanced learning environment that BYOD provides.

We look forward to working with you and your child whilst we implement this new initiative to enhance the student-learning environment at Glenwood High School.

for 2016 has started strong and is already in full

swing. We started the year off with the annual competitors only Swimming Carnival. This year, even though the weather wasn’t so bright, we saw a number of students shine in the pool. Our team we are taking to the Zone carnival on the 1st March is looking good. Year 12 once again had a great day, with plenty of fancy dress and pool aids for their ‘Year 12’ swim. I would like to thank all the staff, students and parents for their support on the day.

Grade sport has also started well, with 2 weeks of grade sport trials. All students from Years 7 – 10, trialled on two very hot Wednesday’s and teams were picked for the sports of Oztag, Soccer and Basketball. These teams will be starting to play other schools as of week 3. Just a reminder, green grade sport notes are to be handed to your coach and you need to listen on assembly Monday’s to find out if you are ‘home’ or ‘away’. If you are ‘away’ for sport, you need to bring your $8 to get on the bus. All students not involved in grade sport will be playing interschool sport against each other. All students must remember their drink bottles, sunscreen and hats every Wednesday for sport.

Last but definitely not least, all our knockout, Macquarie cup and Sydney West trials are coming up in the next few weeks. Already we have had trials for cricket, soccer, Touch Football and many more teams are coming up. Please keep an eye out for posters around the school, announcements made on assembly and listen in your connect classes for information. If you have a special talent make sure you let the PDHPE staff know so they can keep you updated.

All the best to all our students competing in School, Zone, Regional and State championships this

year. We look forward to hearing excellent results right throughout the year.

Year 9 Cricket Success! Congratulations to both Aryan Singh and Taran Walia from Year 9, who have both been selected to represent the Sydney Warriors in their tour against India in Mumbai these school holidays. A fantastic achievement! We wish them well with their upcoming 10 day tour, comprising of five 1 day matches. Good luck!

giving and collection of change for such payments has caused

undue stress and confusion for both staff and students. The school
