Aboriginal Student of the Year for Riverstone Electorate – Jasmine Langworthy

On Friday 17th June 2016 the school was visited by the

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, the honourable Lesley Williams, who announced the local aboriginal student of the year for the Riverstone electorate, Jasmine Langworthy of Year 10. This was a wonderful event with Jasmine’s family in attendance to help her celebrate this prestigious award. Jasmine was nominated for the award by the school’s Aboriginal Education Team for her leadership work across the school and the community. Jasmine is an exemplary role model for her peers at Glenwood High School and has been influential in the support and mentoring of younger Aboriginal students through her work with AIME, the Aboriginal Indigenous Mentoring Experience. Similarly, her work for Harmony Day and her involvement in the Indigenous Dance Troupe has seen her facilitate and support emerging talent amongst our younger Aboriginal dance students. Jasmine’s desire to work with students with disabilities once she completes her studies is testament to her generous and positive nature and we are all very proud to have such an inspirational aboriginal student at Glenwood High School. As part of the award, Jasmine is one of 20 Aboriginal students across the state chosen to attend the 2016 Emerging Leaders Forum at Parliament House on Wednesday 3rd August 2016.

Welcome to our new staff Glenwood welcomes our newest member to the English Faculty, Ms Sabena Guzel. Ms Guzel is replacing Mr Zivkovic and is very excited about joining the Glenwood High School community. It is wonderful to have another passionate and enthusiastic teacher in the English Faculty. A warm welcome to Ms Leila Jorge our new, but very experienced, school counsellor. Ms Jorge is replacing Ms Jacinta Fitzsimons who has been promoted to Senior Psychologist, a new position based at Glenwood High School. Ms Fitzsimons supervises all the school counsellors in a number of our local schools.

Changes to the 2020 Higher School Certificate

Students in the current Year 8 cohort across the state will be the first to undertake an HSC in 2020

under reforms recently announced by the Minister for Education, The Hon. Adrian Piccoli.

The following are but some of the announced changes:

Minimum standards for literacy and numeracy for the award of the HSC. Students must attain no

less than a band 8 in NAPLAN tests (next year’s Year 9) in literacy (reading and writing) and

numeracy

Extension courses will be introduced in science

New syllabuses will be introduced in English, maths, science and history

A common scale will apply to mathematics courses, which will encourage students who have the

ability to undertake a more difficult maths course to receive the appropriate award for doing so

HSC exams will be re-designed to assess greater knowledge and depth of understanding rather

than allowing for pre-prepared responses that are rote learned prior to the exam.

Additions to School Facilities COLA. Over the term break the school has had two exciting additions to our facilities. The construction of the covered outdoor learning area – COLA – over the basketball courts means students have a large shaded area in which to work and play both in and out of class time. It will enable the PDHPE staff to run lessons on wet weather days without interruption to sporting programs. The COLA will also, provide a shaded venue for large assemblies and year meetings. Faculties will also be able to hold large outdoor events such as games, performance or market days which focus on

project based learning and group devised projects. The COLA is a fabulous addition to our already beautiful school. Large FAN. Similarly, the installation of a large fan in the school auditorium will ensure we no longer need to swelter during summer events such as the annual presentation assembly. Most importantly, Year 12 will benefit from the fan during their HSC examinations in October and November. Musical Accolades From the 15th – 18th June 2016, ‘Grease’ was certainly the word at Glenwood High School. The cast and crew produced an amazingly professional show for all of us with up to 130 students involved in the cast alone. The performance skills of our students continues to impress all members of the audience with full houses on the final two evenings. Huge congratulations goes to our main cast members Braden Ligertwood, Charlotte Dawson, Ruby Henshaw, Bethany Boardman, Izzy Guarin, Tatum Robertson, Noah Alder, James Khalife, Nathan Carlos, Nathaniel Henderson, Justine Matulewicz, Zakia Sahib, Calvin Vogt, Lilly Moussa, Maddy Bokenham, Nina Cleaves, Nathan Lacey, Rayne Fountain, Kyle Briffa. Similarly, we must thank the musical director, Ms Sarah Cross, whose vision for the school’s musical theatre productions grows more ambitious every year. We are very lucky to experience the fruits of her passion and determination each year. I am well aware that the students value and appreciate the time she takes to ensure they immerse themselves in something so memorable. Of course, the productions could not be as spectacular as they are without the support of Mrs Anne McDonald, Head Teacher CAPA, who is in charge of set production, and Ms Corrine Jones, for the fantastic choreography.

Jaime Berglin, Year 12 who has been selected for early entrance to Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) at Macquarie University through the Global Leadership Entry Scheme.

Senior and Junior Dance Ensembles who gave inspirational and emotionally charged

performances at the Synergy Dance Festival, between the 7th - 9th June, 2016. The Senior Ensemble members include – Morgan Szombath, Zoe Pearson, Tamsyn Browning, Nicola Browning, Jane Susanto, Maddy Bokenham, Emily Searle, Milla Baker, Kiara Pereira, Georgia Cimijotta, Chloe Brown, Kellie McDougall, Sarah Hamilton, Jessie Jia and Maddison Orchard. The Junior Ensemble members include – Holy Beggs, Madeline Taylor, Bronte Lockie, Maisey McGregor, Laura Bunting, Ebony Turton, Brinleigh Campbell, Laura Chatterton, Talicia Hall, Amy Searle, Emma Brahe, Zoe Waterhouse-Bushnell, Lara Bohle, Emilia Bru, Marie Mathew, Bareen Jalili and Emma Slowgrove.


Year 11 students who attended the Crossroads Camp, 20th – 22th July 2015. Mr Wood, Year 11 Year Advisor, was most impressed with the exemplary behaviour of our Year 11 students whilst away with them for the three days.

Amber Dickinson (Year 10) and Maisy McGregor (Year 8) who have been chosen to compete

in the NSW CHS Trampolining Championships in September, a wonderful achievement. Cameron Legg (Year 7) who will be competing in the NSW CHS Gymnastics Championships in

early August, a fantastic effort.

The Open Girls Knock Out Netball team—Elissa O’Donnell, Bewert Madison, Tayla Chaplin, Kirrily Hand, Holly Sutton, Mykaisha Haye, Brooke Bonnell, Jessica Bowden, Georgia Brennan, Shaylie Baptiste, Bronte Lockie, Caitlin Legg (Umpire), who made it to the final round of the Sydney West Gala Day on Friday 22nd July 2016. This is an outstanding effort from a team who always display excellent sportsmanship. A special mention must go to the Year 12 team members who played despite being in the middle of their HSC Trials.

Tamsyn Browning, Zoe Pearson, Brooke Gardner and Devni Fernando (Year 10) who were

selected to be involved in a Young Women’s Leadership Program for three days in Parramatta last week. The girls’ participated in a range of workshops developing their communication collaborative and creative skills whilst networking with successful women in a range of industries.

A huge thank you to Tracey Jenkins and Jackie Myles, mother and grandmother of Zoe

Pearson and Leanne Murray, mother of Lachlan Murray for covering hundreds of books for the Mathematics Faculty.

We are halfway through the school year and so many wonderful events have already occurred at

our school! So far this year the school has been represented at the highest levels in extracurricular

activities, such as sport, dance, debating and of course our amazing school musical, ‘Grease’. The

Year 11 Crossroads Camp was once again a great success where students gained a greater

knowledge of how to handle the more difficult situations in life and make informed choices. It is

always so rewarding to see students take pride in being a member of the Glenwood community

and represent their school with distinction. The enthusiasm with which students take on additional

responsibilities and roles not only benefits their own development and provides them with valuable

lifelong learning experiences, but contributes to a positive tone across the entire school. The

deputy principals encourage all students to make the most of every opportunity provided to them.

We would also like to thank our staff members who give their time freely to ensure our students

are able to access the best possible education and countless opportunities to succeed.

UNIFORM

Glenwood High School is a uniform school and we expect that all students will attend school

dressed in the correct uniform every day. Students who dress in the school uniform give a clear

indication to their teachers that they are ready for learning and have invested time in ensuring that

their appearance sets a positive tone. In addition, the high school experience involves readying

students for life beyond school and in particular, the world of work. Most workplaces will either

have a uniform or dress code that must be followed as a condition of employment. Our school’s

commitment to the school uniform helps students learn that there are certain expectations with

regards to dress that need to be followed now and into the future. The deputy principals and

executive staff closely monitor the wearing of school uniform and we ask our parents to assist this

process by ensuring their child is equipped with the correct uniform. With the cooler weather now

here, parents should note in particular that jumpers/jackets other than the school approved

jumpers/jackets are not acceptable, including hoodies worn underneath our school jackets. Non-

uniform jumpers/jackets are liable to be confiscated if they are worn without justification. For

BANNED ITEMS

To ensure the safety of all our students, Glenwood High School maintains a ‘banned items list’.

Under no circumstances are students to bring the following items to school:

chewing gum

permanent markers

ring pull cans (ie, salmon/tuna tins, etc)

liquid paper

aerosol cans of any description (inc. deodorant)

skateboards and scooters

laser lights


metal rulers

cigarettes/electronic cigarettes

lighters

matches

imitation guns or weapons

illegal items (eg, weapons, drugs, drug paraphernalia, etc)

inappropriate or offensive material

highly caffeinated beverages (such as ‘V’, Red Bull etc)

medications of any kind (unless registered with the front office)

‘Deep Heat’ or similar products

Students found with these items will have the item immediately confiscated and further

consequences will usually occur. We thank parents for ensuring these items are not brought to

school under any circumstances.

HSC TRIAL EXAMS

Year 12 started the term with their Trial HSC exams in most subjects, the last formal exams before

the HSC examinations. They now need to reflect on their results and take on board the invaluable

feedback their teachers will provide to them. Students are reminded that they still have a long way to

go in preparing for their HSC and all teachers have not yet finished teaching the course. As such, it

is important, and is expected, that all Year 12 students be in class every lesson. Students now need

to consolidate their knowledge and skills, while refining and perfecting their ability to perform well in

the HSC exams in October.

We would like to acknowledge the commitment of staff who give up their time after school, on

weekends and during holidays to further support their students. They are not required to do this, but

do so as they want the best results for all students in their care. Year 12 need to take full advantage

of any extra opportunities their teachers offer them. This final focus over the next few weeks can

result in more marks – remember it is never too late to improve results.

ASSESSMENT TASKS & N-AWARD WARNINGS

Parents are reminded that if a student in Year 9 to Year 12 is absent for an assessment task for any

reason, they must contact the relevant deputy principal as soon as possible – at the very latest, the

first day the student returns to school. A medical certificate covering the absence and/or other

documentation justifying the absence is essential. Students in these year groups are provided with

an assessment handbook each year which details the rules governing assessment practice. It is

important that all students familiarise themselves with these rules and follow them. Otherwise,

students may receive a zero mark and this will affect the student’s overall grade and/or HSC mark

submitted to the NSW Board of Studies. Copies of these assessment booklets can be found on our

school website.

The NSW Board of Studies requires schools to warn students who are at risk of not completing a

specific course. If a student receives an N-award warning letter, this is a clear indication that the

student is at serious risk of not completing the course successfully. In the event that a student

receives an N-award warning letter, the student should speak to their classroom teacher to ascertain

the best method of redeeming the N-award warning and progress successfully in the course.


It is not advisable to ignore these warning letters as they can normally be addressed quickly when

teachers and students work together.

This is particularly important for Year 11 students who are approaching the end of their preliminary

year. They must complete all tasks, including redeeming any outstanding N-warnings before they can

proceed to Year 12 in Term 4 and their final year of study.

YEARS 8 & 10 SUBJECT SELECTIONS

Year 10 students have now chosen their subjects for 2017 and 2018. We would like to thank parents

for the massive turnout at the subject selection evening as it demonstrates that our parent body is

eager to learn about the curriculum choices at Glenwood High School and want to play an active part

in helping their child make good decisions. Year 8 students will be going through a very similar process

this term, with the subject selection information night for Year 9 2017 taking place on Monday, 8th

August at 6.30pm in the school auditorium. Year 8 students will then be given a few days to discuss

their options with their parents and teachers before making their final choices. The key advice the

school offers is that students should do the subjects they like, rather than what their friends are doing.

Children will always achieve their best if they are happy and interested in what they are doing.

The vast majority of students in both year groups generally receive all of the subjects they have

selected and the school works hard to ensure that the process is as fair as possible. However, for a

number of reasons, there will be some students who do not receive their preferred choices and may

have to re-select. This will involve an interview with the relevant deputy principal and a discussion of

different options available to the student. For Year 8 students, a confirmation sheet will be sent home

with students in about a month after selections are due, indicating the three electives they will be

enrolled in for Year 9 (2017) and Year 10 (2018). For Year 10 students, they will have a more

extensive process which involves subject selection interviews with an executive teacher, year advisor

or careers advisor to ensure that Board of Studies requirements have been met, and that subjects

have been chosen in consideration of their ability and future aspirations. In past years, we have found

this to be an effective process for helping students and provide detailed advice.

Students who have questions regarding their subject choices or have changed their mind about what

subjects they want to do next year should see Mrs Healy (Year 10) or Mrs Hosen (Year 8) as a matter

of urgency so they do not miss out.

COMMUNICATION

Open communication between home and school is of tremendous benefit to the education and welfare

of our students. Glenwood High School is a large school and for parents, how to communicate with the

school may seem daunting. There are many school staff members who spend time with your child or

have responsibility for different aspects of school life, and it is often difficult to work out with whom you

should be communicating. The following information should point you in the right direction. It should be

used as a guide only – you are more than welcome to contact any of our staff regarding a concern or

enquiry. If you are still unsure about who to contact, please briefly outline the issue to one of our office

staff and they will be able to direct you to the appropriate person.


Should your issue not be resolved, please contact the relevant deputy principal. Please be assured

that year advisors discuss issues with, and seek advice from, the deputy principals. Teachers make

every effort to get back to telephone messages or emails within two school days. However, there may

be times where this may be longer, for example, if they are on excursions, on professional

development, or if they are sick.

A great way to keep abreast of what is happening with your child at school is to attend our Parent

Teacher evenings. It was wonderful to see so many of our Years 8-10 parents at this event last

Tuesday! It provided an important opportunity for parents to discuss the progress of their child directly

with classroom teachers and talk about ways for their child to improve. If you missed the opportunity

to speak with your child’s teacher, or are concerned about their progress, please do not hesitate to

contact the school as all staff are more than happy to meet with you at another time, or speak with you

over the phone. If you have not received your child’s Half-Yearly report, please contact the school

office as soon as possible.

Other great ways to keep in contact with what is happening at the school include using our parent

portal on Sentral, our school website, our Facebook page, or for those who prefer to use phone apps,

we also post information to the Glenwood High School app, available through various app stores,

depending on your phone type.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Social media has become the ‘new’ way of communicating and it certainly has its advantages.

However, we have found that some students are inclined to use social media in an inappropriate

manner, and we ask parents to consider how they monitor their child’s use of technology at home. The

school takes incidents of cyber-bullying very seriously and has the authority from the Department of

Education to intervene in such situations where a students is at risk, taking disciplinary action where

necessary. The old adage that ‘if you don’t have anything nice to say about someone, it is better to say

nothing at all’ still holds true. Over their six years of schooling, students at Glenwood high School

attend a number of sessions on technology, the use of social media and internet etiquette. As such,

students are expected to follow the school’s PBL expectations when communicating online.

Always respect others. In addition, students are reminded that anything published on the internet is not

private, even if it is posted ‘privately’ with privacy restrictions. There is nothing stopping a person from

taking a screen shot of a message and re-broadcasting it for others to see. Of particular concern is the

fact that future employers may have access to this information. We would ask all parents to have a

conversation with their child about their use of social media to ensure they have an understanding of

the possible implications and consequences of inappropriate use. Our welfare curriculum will continue

to address many of these issues at regular intervals.

There are some fantastic events coming up on the school calendar and we are excited to be able to

share some of these with you. Keep an eye out and mark your calendars for Comedy for a Cause,

being held on the 6th September in our school hall. It promises to be another fantastic night full of

laughter, good food and company, all while supporting a great cause. The deputy principals would like

Congratulations to the Year 10 Premier’s Debating Challenge team. They are the zone winners, who beat the selective High School, Baulkham Hills. Glenwood High School have made it through to the Western Sydney Semi-finals. The following students are representing Glenwood High School in the larger Western Sydney division. Well done to Joshua Brooks, Maddalyn Bokenham, Patrick Gleeson and Aalapi

Sreekumar & Nina Matani. Congratulations also to the Year 7 debaters who have come to Glenwood High School as competent and enthusiastic debaters. They competed admirably in this tough competition and looked like they would be zone winners, but were knocked out by Glenwood High School Year 8 team. A special acknowledgement goes out to these Year 7 students: Tara Thompson, Tamanpreet Singh, Talicia Hall and Bareen Jalili, Peter Martin, Max Vogt and Jayesh Kalra. Congratulations to the students who also took part in the Ridges Friendly Debating Initiative and participated in adjudicating Primary School debates. The GHS Community mentoring program kicked off in March this year and we are midway through

our outstanding program. The program pairs a selected group of year 11 students with a community

member that is in a profession that they may want to pursue after finishing school. We have 26

mentors and 31 mentees that meet for 9 one hour sessions across this year, working on goals and

researching career options. If you would like to be involved as a mentor in 2017, feel free to contact

Sport this semester has been in full swing at

Glenwood High School. It has been an extremely

busy and successful time for all those students

participating both within our high school and outside of it.

On the 6th and 7th of June, the annual Macquarie Zone Athletics Carnival was conducted at

Blacktown International Sports Park. For the first time in the school’s history, Glenwood High School

was the champion school achieving the most points in the whole zone. Some outstanding

performances from our students meant that we had a number of age champions.

Our weekly Grade Sport competition has also been very successful. A number of our teams are

currently sitting in first place with only 5 rounds to go. The sportsmanship shown from our students has

been outstanding. A lot of praise should go to the students who are committed every Wednesday to

putting in 100% effort. In addition the wonderful grade sport teachers that help motivate and look after

the teams.

Glenwood has also had some great success in our team sports. Our Knockouts are always highly

competitive and this term was no different. Below are some results over this semester.

Congratulations to our CHS Lawn Bowls team who played at Warilla recently.

Laura Bunting and Alana Head finished 2nd in the State.

The Open Girls Tennis team are in the final ten teams in the state. This is an

amazing achievement. They will now take part in a 2 day event in Ulladulla. Led

by coach Mr. Davis, the girls have thrived in this competition.

In addition to this amazing team’s success, we also had some individual

students who excelled in their chosen fields.

The Open Boys Soccer team recently made the Sydney West Final. An

outstanding effort considering the strength of the competition.

Congratulations to Maisy McGregor of year 8 who attended the Australian

Gymnastics National championships in VIC, who placed 3rd, receiving a

Bronze medal. Maisy will also complete at the NSW CHS Trampolining

Championships on the Central Coast in September.


Congratulations Lisa Mays on winning your first Tennis ITF title, "Open Junior BNP Paribas de

Nouvelle - Caledonie- Noumea, 2016 Singles Winner"!!

Congratulations to Tiana Jaber who was selected and recently participated in the NSW CHS

Soccer at Valentine Park.

A big congratulations to Emily Hurley who was selected into the NSW AFL All Schools "The

Bluebirds" team who will play up in Maroochydore QLD in July.

Well done to Brendan Coxall who represented Sydney Brumbies in the U15s NSW AFL CHS

Championships.

The Girls Knockout Soccer team recently made the Sydney West Final an outstanding effort

considering the strength of the competition.

Parents or carers who engage the services of a private tutor or coach have an important role to play in helping to keep their children safe.

From 1st April 2016 adults who provide private tuition or coaching services to children will need to obtain a new Working With Children Check.

The Certificate for Self Employed People will no longer be valid after their expiry date and the certificate holders will need to apply for a new Working With Children Check.

Parents or carers should ask their child’s tutor or coach for their name, date of birth and their Working With Children Check number.

They must then go online and verify the tutor or coach is not barred from working with children in NSW.

Verifying that a tutor or coach can work with children is quick and easy – just follow the simple steps at www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au/parentscheckthecheck

2. Why do I have to enter the student’s details each time I make a payment, isn’t

it stored in the system?

When you make a payment you are in a secure Westpac website, for privacy and

security of data no student details are maintained within the Westpac site. You

must enter the details with each payment.

3. The screen keeps displaying the date I have just completed, it is not moving on?

Scroll through the whole screen, any errors will be shown in RED, you cannot progress

until you resolve the error.

4. The screen on my mobile phone is different to the screen on my computer, why?

The screens on mobile phones and tabled are designed as mobile friendly and are

easier to use.

5. I don’t know the student registration number, what is it?

The student registration number is optional, if the school issues invoices the number

may appear on the invoice. Some schools use this on advice to parents, but not all

schools.

6. What is the Ref or Invoice number, I don’t know it?

The ref or invoice number is optional. Some schools use this on advice to parents, but

not all schools.

7. Why can’t I deposit directly to the school’s bank account?

A direct deposit does not give the school any detail as to what you are paying for. The

description space varies from bank to bank and is limited so the students name and

class may not fit. Schools can have students with the same name and it is difficult to

distinguish which student the payment relates to.

8. Why can’t I use BPay?

BPay only allows a total amount to be paid, payers are not able to select particular items

to pay.

9. Does the school see my credit card details?

The credit card details are masked on any reports to the school eg. 411111 xxxxx 4111

10. Can I use a debit card or PayPal for payments?

Payments can only be made using Visa or MasterCard credit or debit cards. American

Expess, Diners club or EFTPos cards are not accepted. PayPal is not a payment option

using this process. If a payer only has an EFTPoS debit card then the schools EFTPoS

terminal, cash or cheque are alternate methods of payment.

11. I have made a payment in error, how can I cancel it?

Contact the school and request that they cancel the transaction. This can be the same

day that the transaction was processed or at a later date.

The school wishes to inform all parents/carers the exact cash is

required when paying for excursions and accounts. In the past, the

giving and collection of change for such payments has caused

undue stress and confusion for both staff and students. The school

is most happy to accept payment by cheque or credit card for all

expenses.

Eftpos Facility Due to the financial cost of the use of the Eftpos

LATE, ABSENT OR LEAVING EARLY NOTES

Notes are required from Parent / Guardian to explain reasons for lateness, absence or leaving

early. Please ensure your child’s full name and year is clearly written on the note.

If a student does not produce a note for lateness a detention will be issued for that day.

ALL notes are required to be handed in at Student Reception at the beginning of the day to enable

a pass to be issued to the student and for the details to be noted in the system to avoid a truancy

note being issued.

THE SCHOOL OPAL CARD

Dear Parents / Carers

The School Opal Card gives eligible students free or discounted travel between home and school,

using the train, bus or ferry services you nominate in your application.

School Opal card makes travel simpler, because students don’t need multiple application forms and

passes if they use different transport operators within the Opal network.

The School Opal card is only for travel to and from school. Students travelling to other

destinations must purchase Child/Youth Opal Card. Find out more and apply at opal.com.au or

purchase from an Opal retailer.

To be eligible for a School Opal Card, students may need to live a distance from their school.

YEAR 7-12 (Secondary) - 2.0km straight line distance or 2.9km walking.

How to apply

1. Complete the application at transportnsw.info/school-students

2. Print, Sign and date the completed application, then submit it to the student’s school for

endorsement.

3. The school then sends the endorsed application to Transport NSW. Once approved, the School Opal card will be sent to the address provided on the application.

Students who currently have a School Opal Card do not need to reapply. The School Opal Card will be

sent to their school beginning of the first term each year.

Notification of Changes of Details

Students who have already been issued with a School Opal card must ensure they keep their details

up to date. If any details change (e.g. address, shared parental arrangements, school etc.) you must

complete the application form and tick the box - Current School travel pass holder with change of

details. Question 7 must be completed to notify the changes.
