Welcome to the 2020 academic year, after what I hope was a restful and enjoyable holiday. I especially welcome our new parents who have children commencing at Glenwood for the first time this year. There are so many opportunities for your child to develop academically, socially and personally. Our wish for your child is that, when they complete their schooling at Glenwood High School, they have taken advantage of the many wonderful programs, events and activities that are available and they feel that they have been supported and challenged to discover their potential and achieve their personal best. The world is their oyster!

A large school can sometimes sound intimidating. Some people could think that the bigger you are the less personal, tailored or connected you could be. That is not the case with Glenwood High School. I believe that the old adage, that it takes a village to raise productive members of society, is very much the case with Glenwood. With close to 1400, we are like a small village. We pride ourselves on tailoring opportunities for your child to engage with. We aim to tailor our time, resources and programs so that every student is known, valued and care for. Students have returned focused and ready for learning whilst looking splendid in their full school uniforms. As always, our teachers continue to be impressed with the calibre of the students at Glenwood and the depth and breadth of academic, artistic, creative and sporting talent across the whole student cohort. A huge thank you to our parents and carers who support all school policy including the school’s strict uniform policy by ensuring their children have a clean, pressed uniform to wear every day along with the traditional leather lace-up school shoes. Glenwood students take great pride in their school through their appearance every day and the wearing of the uniform representing their families, their school and their community in an exemplary manner. New and Returning Staff First and foremost, we welcome back Deputy Principal Ms Young. Ms Young is the Deputy Principal for Years 7 and 10 on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Mrs O’Connor will continue in the role of Relieving Deputy Principal for Years 7 and 10 on Mondays and Tuesdays. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs O’Connor for her hard work, dedication to achieving the best possible outcomes for students and her professionalism as Relieving Deputy Principal throughout 2019 and look forward to continuing to work with her in this capacity throughout 2020.

This year we welcome: • Miss Feroz to our Science Faculty. Miss Feroz will be replacing Mr Farrugia who accepted a

position at St Mary’s Senior High School at the end of last year. We wish Mr Farrugia the best at his new school, and look forward to Ms Feroz becoming integral to our school’s success.

• Mr Hernandes will be joining the Maths Faculty in Term 2. He will be replacing Ms Brahe whose

hard work and dedication has been acknowledged by her successfully being appointed to the position of Head Teacher Mathematics at Cherrybrook Technology High School. We wish Ms Brahe the best at her new school and welcome Mr Hernandes.

Returning staff include: • Mr Karayiannis as Head Teacher HSIE. Mr Karayiannis is returning the Glenwood High School

following his extended secondment to NESA where he oversaw curriculum planning and implementation for HSIE courses.

• Mrs Mehdi as Head Teacher Mathematics. Mrs Mehdi is returning to us following a 12 month sabbatical, during which she did return to Glenwood for extended visits. It was lovely to see such dedication from our staff.

Spirit Week This week, we celebrated a Spirit Week which was a great week of lunchtime fun for all our students, coordinated by the amazing Glenwood High School Prefects. It was wonderful to see so many enthusiastic students involved in all activities, with House Points won for each entrant. The Prefects worked very hard to make the week a success and deserves a special thank you for making Glenwood such an enjoyable place to be. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our student leadership team for their ongoing commitment to community building.

HSC Success I am proud to inform you of the HSC results of our 2019 HSC class. They were impressive, and so well-deserved. Our Dux was Rabie who achieved our highest ATAR of 98.75. Rabie performed exceptionally in a complex pattern of study including Mathematics Extension 1, Mathematics Extension 2, English Standard, Chemistry, Physics and Engineering Studies. Khyati followed closely behind with an ATAR of 96.7. Khyati undertook a broad range of subjects including English Advanced, Mathematics Extension 2, Music 1, Chemistry and Physics. Brendan followed closely on Khyati’s trail, studying a variety of subjects including 96.2 Mathematics, Mathematics Extension 1, English Standard, Biology, Chemistry, Food Technology and Hospitality VET. In tight competition was Alexandra whose ATAR of 95.65 was achieved from her study of 13 units from a broad range of subjects including English Advanced, English Extension 1, Mathematics, Mathematics Extension 1, Modern History, History Extension, Chemistry and Indonesian Continuers. Congratulations on your well-earned results! 248 students completed their HSC at Glenwood High School in 2019. 100% of them successfully completed the Higher School Certificate (HSC). Of these, 90% of students also received an ATAR.

Student Uni Successes: The Bachelor of Accounting scholarship course is a flagship program of the UTS School of Business, in that it attracts the very best school leavers and more than $1.5 million dollars in industry sponsorship to the university each year. This year - in which they will be welcoming their 31st class of new students - will be a new high mark for this outstanding successful program. There are 27 fully-sponsored places in this intake, bringing the total sponsored places in the whole course to almost 100 every year. The good news is that Manveer (Aryan) our previous school captain has been accepted into the 2020 Intake.

• Alexandra was offered and accepted the Academy Award scholarship at Western Sydney University studying a Bachelor of Advanced Medical Science.

• 4 students invited to the Macquarie Leaders breakfast with all faculty professors and 2 students to USYD Dayelle scholarship morning tea for high achievers

• 120 students applied for SRS and 100 received unconditional early entry to one or more universities.

We will continue to maintain our focus on ensuring our students can achieve the best possible results they can in their HSC so that they have as many options and opportunities available to them when they leave. I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the teachers of this fantastic school. The teaching staff at Glenwood High School is amongst the best I have ever worked with and thoroughly prepare students for the HSC examinations and the future ahead. Many of our students gained University entry and are very happy with the tertiary courses they have been able to access. In the upcoming weeks all Head Teachers have been analysing the data from the HSC results with their faculty and celebrating successes and reflecting on performances. I too will be sitting down with my Director in the next couple of weeks analysing our data.

High Achievers Assembly Next Friday, 14th February, 2020, we will hold our annual High Achievers Assembly. This will be wonderful opportunity to celebrate successes with students from the class of 2019. We look forward to welcoming our special guests, the high achieving students, their parents/caregivers, families and friends. It will give Year 11 and 12 an opportunity to witness this celebration. To celebrate someone else’s success can be motivational and inspirational. School Contributions We are in the process of organising invoices for 2020 fees. The invoice contains the full costing of elective fees and general contributions. I thank those families who have paid their invoices promptly in the past, and those who have organised a payment plan to help stay on top of things. Subject contributions are used to purchase consumables for use in class. In Years 9 through to 12, when students select subjects with related fees, the agreement with the school is that those fees will be paid in that calendar year. The general contributions are used to fund the extras we all would like our children to have and that are not provided for in government funding, such as on-site technology support, extra staffing in the Learning Centre and improved outdoor facilities. These are all additional resources which many other schools cannot and do not provide and that your child has been given the full advantage of accessing. These can only continue to be provided if general school contributions are paid. Fees are necessary for student electives to continue in their current format, while the general contribution supports a variety of student programs and needs, including the purchase of the most appropriate junior texts and resources to support student learning. Parents will note the P&C contribution, which is also included on these schedules. The P&C funds have been used to support numerous initiatives at the school. For Year 10 parents, it is important to note that Year 10 students are required to settle their financial account before their enrolment in Year 11 subjects can be confirmed or signed out of school to pursue TAFE or work options.

Please be aware that fee payments can be made throughout the year in instalments as small as $5 a week. This can be done by accessing the “Make a payment” button at the top of the Glenwood High School webpage and indicating which item is being paid. The same process can be made to pay of excursions in advance. Many parents have utilised this flexibility to meet their financial commitments to the school. It is most fortunate that our parents and community do so strongly support the school and value the education their sons and daughters receive. We look forward to this support continuing in 2020 so we can provide the best opportunities for you child.

Dear Parents and Caregivers, In Year 10 students undertake a Careers Education Course, where every fortnight, students will have a Career lesson. In these lessons, students will be given the opportunity to reflect on their interests/goals and explore various career options. This exploration will enable students to gain an understanding of the many different career opportunities available to them and create a personalised Career Pathway. This process will highlight the various study requirements necessary and assist with subject selection for year 11 so they can achieve their goals. During the career classes your child will engage in career exploration including:

• Job Research

• Career Pathways

• Year 11 Subject Selections

• Higher Education Requirements

• Entrepreneurship

• Job interviews

• Prepare for life after school As part of the Careers Education Course students will have the opportunity to participate in a Work Experience Program. This program will run, 1st – 5th June 2020. It is mandatory for students to attend work experience or school. Students are given time to organise their work experience during career lessons, however, students may also be required to complete the organisation at home. Work Experience is an integral part of the Careers Education Course at this school. The aim is for students to gain first-hand experience in the workforce of their chosen area. COMMUNITY MENTORING PROGRAM 2020

Are you interested in mentoring a young person? We are seeking mentors from a variety of career backgrounds to

be part of our mentoring program.

Requirements:

• Interested in having a positive impact on the life of a young person; (who

may be interested in a similar career field)

• Available to attend a mandatory training session;

• Good rapport with young people and a positive role model;

• Able to provide a one year commitment to the program;

• Complete a mandatory working with children check.

Are you available between 8am – 9am for nine one to one mentoring sessions?

HSC Minimum Standard

Plan to leave early

Parents/caregivers are requested to write a note explaining why the student needs to leave school early and the time they need to leave. Notes should have the student’s full name and year group printed clearly for records and files. Students must hand in this note to student reception BEFORE school where they will be issued with an Early Leaver’s Pass. Students are to show their classroom teacher this pass at the beginning of the lesson if they need to leave during class time. Students are then to report to student reception and inform office staff that they are leaving. Students are not permitted to leave early on sports days. If there are exceptional circumstances on sports days, students must bring in a note from home and have it approved by the Deputy Principal BEFORE school. If parents/caregivers unexpectedly need to collect their child/ward, they are requested to call the school beforehand so arrangements can be made for the student to be waiting at reception. Parents/caregivers must report to the parent reception to collect their child/ward.

Items left at home If your child/ward forgets to bring items to school (i.e. lunch, items of clothing, assignments etc.), parents/caregivers may bring this item to the parent reception. It is your child/ward's responsibility to enquire at the student counter during recess or lunch time to collect items left at home. Extended Absences Parents/caregivers need to apply for extended leave for students by completing an ‘Application for Extended leave - Travel’ form which is available from reception. This form is to be returned to reception for approval from their Deputy Principal. This will enable the school to hold the students position at the school while they are on leave.

Students are responsible for making arrangements with their teacher to collect work for the time they are away. When students return to school, it is their responsibility to catch up on all the work they have missed. Extended leave is discouraged in the Preliminary or HSC years, as students will be at risk of not meeting course requirements.
