Page 2: Glengarry Wines December Wineletter #192

Australia’s benchmark sweet white wine is a rich and opulent encounter, a honeyed mouthful of dried stonefruits, citrus and marmalade, beautifully enhanced by some judicious oak and a biscuity magic. The quality is superbly consistent, year after year. Made from botrytised Sémillon grapes, it boasts delightful textures and an intense, almost oily fi nish. You could try, for dessert, matching it with apricot tart, or even at the beginning of dinner with a rich game terrine.

We love Christmas; all the family and friends, food and frivolity, leaning into the sun and generally lounging back. And, let’s face it, it’s a chance to sign off a year of hard slog with a kick of the heels. And it has been quite a year, with the degree of movement within the local wine industry. This month we witness a signifi cant shift with the introduction of a new Sale and Supply of Liquor Act and the raft of changes it will bring. Through it all, though, we can assure you that the unsurpassed selection of wines, beers and spirits from all around the world, the great everyday value and the scintillating service you all deserve won’t be changing.

Within this festive edition you’ll fi nd a wonderful array of expressions to lubricate the celebratory wheels, a winning combination of quality and value that takes in everything from your favourite still variety to a collection of sparklers that covers the whole spectrum, from craftily-constructed brews to the highest of spirits. And if that’s still not enough, you can uncover even more online at www.glengarry.co.nz as you work your way through our stupendous selection of gift ideas.

Since obtaining, way back in the 1940s, one of the fi rst two licences to sell wine in New Zealand, we have remained constantly on the lookout for new and exciting products and innovations from around the globe; and as we enter a new era, we hope that you’ll continue to accompany us on the journey ahead.

Have a wonderful Christmas and an outstanding 2014.

All the best,

Jak Jakicevich

It’s Christmas

ROCKBURN SUBLIMELY SOUTHERN

CENTRAL OTAGO

Established in 1991 by Dunedin surgeon Dick Bunton, Rockburn won gold at the Air NZ Wine Awards for its very fi rst Pinot release, and from that point on there has been no looking back. 2013 has been yet another stellar year, their 2011 Pinot Noir winning, amongst other things, gold at the Decanter World Wine Awards.

Rockburn’s wines are hand harvested off the company’s Parkburn and Gibbston Valley vineyards. Each site contributes its own unique characteristics that provide chief winemaker Malcolm Rees-Francis with a palette of distinctive fl avour profi les from which he masterfully produces the award-winning wines. As Malcolm puts it: ‘My philoso-phy is to respect the fruit, listen to what it is trying to say and help it to do that. We don’t manipulate or use fi nings; our aim is to produce harmonious wines that refl ect their unique terroir.’

Rockburn’s outstanding record is not confi ned to their headlining Pinot Noir, but extends throughout the entire portfolio, with excellence across the board their primary objective.

ROCKBURN

CASE OF 6 $79.00 A BOTTLE

Rockburn extend their already sky-scraping Pinot Noir standards via their special release wines. When the fruit is exceptional and off their home vineyards, they do a special bottling and label it Twelve Barrels. When sourced from one of their other connections, it falls under their The Art moniker. Diligently honest, brilliantly executed.

ROCKBURN THE ARTCENTRAL OTAGO PINOT NOIR 2010

CASE OF 12 $36.00 A BOTTLE

The Rockburn awards cupboard must be overfl owing: year after year this winery wins acclaim for its vibrantly executed vinous triumphs, with the winemaker behind all this success the ultra-perfectionist Malcom Rees-Francis. One of Rockburn’s star attributes is, in fact, their sheer consistency. Here, lifted aromatics, silky textures, some anchoring earthy notes and just the right amount of oak, all integrated into a superbly harmonious whole.

A tribute to a man who played a key role in winemaking in the Clare Valley – K.H

(Mr Mick) Knappstein – created by his last apprentice, Tim Adams. Mr Mick is

a fruit forward range that Tim Adams produces alongside his own self-named

selection of wines, which you’ll also fi nd in our stores this month. The Tim

Adams wines have been going strong in the Clare Valley now for more than a

quarter of a century, and it’s great to fi nally have them available in NZ.

With a historical affi nity for the aromatic varieties, Matawhero are well poised to lead the charge with lesser-known styles on their many vineyard sites throughout the Gisborne region. What we have here in the Church House stable is something a bit special. Give them a go this month and we’ll put you in the draw to win a memorable weekend in Gisborne (go to www.glengarry.co.nz/church house for more).

Launched in September 2013 with nine members, Méthode Marlborough

came about thanks to the efforts of some of Marlborough’s most infl uential

women. The criteria for inclusion is simple; sparkling wines must be made

in the traditional manner, with the second fermentation in the bottle and

the wine undergoing 18 months aging on lees; the fruit must be 100%

Marlborough, with the three permitted varieties Chardonnay, Pinot Noir

and Pinot Meunier. Since September, MM has grown to include eleven

wineries, ten of which are available from Glengarry stores this month.

12485 O:TU MARLBOROUGH SAUVIGNON BLANC 2013 $16.99 CASE OF 12 $15.00 A BOTTLE

A bold Marlborough Sauvignon with pungent aromas of sweet grass, nettles, blackcurrants and gooseberries reinforced by fresh, zesty lime characters. Bolstered by fl inty notes typical of the Awatere Valley, the gooseberry and currant nuanced palate builds to end on a long, fi ne, mineral fi nish.

11236 CRAGGY RANGE TE MUNA VINEYARD MARTINBOROUGH SAUVIGNON BLANC 2013 $19.99 CASE OF 12 $19.00 A BOTTLE

From Craggy’s famed Te Muna Vineyard, gunfl int/wet stone characters come stealing through behind the coolly suave lime and grapefruit components. Has the bracing citrus freshness we all seek in a wine of this type, and then it spreads out with lovely layers of rich, fat stonefruit. Hugely fl avoursome.

19684 VILLA MARIA RESERVE WAIRAU VALLEY SAUVIGNON BLANC 2013 $21.99 CASE OF 6 $20.00 A BOTTLE

2013 was an exceptional vintage across New Zealand, with Villa Maria’s Wairau Reserve proving to be a particular standout amongst its many high points. The rich and fragrant palate is textural and generous, evoking a refreshing style of Sauvignon Blanc that has you reaching for a second glass.

18204 KUMEU RIVER KUMEU VILLAGE KUMEU CHARDONNAY 2010 $14.99 CASE OF 12 $14.00 A BOTTLE

Tips its hat to Burgundy and its classifi cation levels, as well as that style of Chardonnay, the one that inspired Michael Brajkovich. There is an undeniable minerality, balance and winemaking prowess at work. While this is KR’s fi rst rung on the quality ladder, there is very little that’s ‘entry level’ about it.

10827 PASK GIMBLETT ROAD HAWKES BAY CHARDONNAY 2010 $19.99 CASE OF 12 $19.00 A BOTTLE

Partially barrel fermented and lees aged, this has plenty of complexity, weight and texture. The nose offers succulent grapefruit aromas tinged with toasty notes, the poised palate throws in its citrus and grapefruit fl avours, while the nutty-mealy nuances bring up the rear. Deservedly touched with gold.

40466 DOMAINE SÉGUINOT-BORDET PETIT CHABLIS 2012 $26.99 CASE OF 12 $24.00 A BOTTLE

Jean-Francois Bordet has forged a wonderful union between the old and the new and taken his 16-century family house to another level. The fi rst cab off their rank, the Petit Chablis is fresh, vibrant and richly fl avoured, the refi ned palate distinguished by crisp apple fl avours and fresh, tingling mineral notes.

12943 ARA SINGLE ESTATE MARLBOROUGH PINOT GRIS 2013 $17.99 CASE OF 6 $17.00 A BOTTLE

With its close-planted low vines, the Ara vineyard leaves you feeling a little more like you’re in Europe than New Zealand. The combination of brilliant fruit with the serious skills of Jeff Clarke means this single estate Gris delivers well above its pricepoint. Pears, nectarines and spice linger fragrantly.

11106 CHARD FARM CENTRAL OTAGO PINOT GRIS 2012 $21.99 CASE OF 12 $21.00 A BOTTLE

Carved into a hillside within a breathtaking landscape, Central pioneers Chard Farm are stand-out performers, their winemaking smarts beyond dispute. Here, bold characters of cinnamon-soaked pears and a hint of fl owers lead to a weighty, wondrous wine laced with mineral magic.

10876 ISABEL MARLBOROUGH PINOT GRIS 2013 $22.99 CASE OF 12 $22.00 A BOTTLE

Pinot Gris requires careful management in the vineyard, a concept that the fastidious Isabel team are more than at home with. Elegant and fragrant, this spills its wonderfully aromatic nose of spice-nuanced white peach, ginger and rose petals across a lush and creamy palate of pears and stonefruit.

46500 JOSMEYER ALSACE PINOT GRIS 2007 $24.99 CASE OF 12 $22.00 A BOTTLE

Josmeyer is the jewel in our Alsatian range, biodynamic producers operating at the highest level, producing dazzling aromatic wines with a purity others can only aspire to. Their Pinot Gris sets the standard, its deliciously textured peach and honey characters travelling an endless arc across your tastebuds.

18311 SATELLITE MARLBOROUGH GEWÜRZTRAMINER 2013 $14.99 CASE OF 12 $13.00 A BOTTLE

From the highly respected Spy Valley’s second tier, lighter-styled range of wines, this aromatic Gewürztraminer is mildly sweet, with exotic, honeyed notes of lychee, spice and ginger travelling to a soft, textural, lingering fi nish. Go for Asian cuisine on the food match.

44420 CASTELNAU DE SUDUIRAUT SAUTERNES 2009 375ML

$27.99 CASE OF 12 $26.00 A BOTTLE

The second wine of First Growth Sauternes sultans, Château Suduiraut, the Castelnau is a gem. Mandarin, apricot and butterscoth aromas are washed with spicy, gingery notes, followed by a rich, creamy palate that’s balanced by just the right amount of acidity. Delightful as it is, but cellar some as well.

41623 CHÂTEAU NICOT BORDEAUX 2010 $16.99 CASE OF 12 $16.00 A BOTTLE

A relatively unknown château, Nicot has nonetheless been under vine now for two centuries. It is a supple, seductive wine with a solid core of ripe fruit and curlicues of smoke (but no mirrors) elevating it to well above intriguing. Plummy, concentrated and wearing a darling little price, wouldn’t you say?

11355 CRAGGY RANGE TE KAHU HAWKES BAY 2011 $23.99 CASE OF 12 $23.00 A BOTTLE

A Gimblett Gravels take on a French classic, done to perfection. Merlot dominates the blend, the rich, abundant black fruits dancing on your tongue held in check by fi ne tannins. An elegant, balanced and buoyant expression enhanced by mocha notes and a sustained, savoury fi nish.

41137 CHÂTEAU CLINET RONAN BORDEAUX 2010 $24.99 CASE OF 12 $19.00 A BOTTLE

One of Pomerol’s most celebrated Châteaux, the team at Clinet have produced this superb buy using fruit from vineyards outside the appellation. The (100%) Merlot is from the exceptional 2010 vintage, its blackberry, bramble and spice characters softly seductive and totally charming. 91/100, Wine Spectator.

12402 CROSSROADS MILESTONE GIMBLETT GRAVELS SYRAH 2011 $18.99 CASE OF 12 $17.50 A BOTTLE

One of the best kept secrets instore right now, and an exceptional deal. The nose is dominated by lifted fl orals complemented by an array of clove, spice and blueberry. The palate is silky and smooth, showing sweet, spicy fruit with notes of black olive and red currant. A lovely choice for the Christmas table.

10080 AKARUA RUA CENTRAL OTAGO PINOT NOIR 2012 $22.99 CASE OF 12 $21.00 A BOTTLE

Nothing short of a Central Otago fruit bowl, this is highly seductive and wonderfully affordable; Akarua’s drink-now model is extremely user-friendly, notes of cherry, violet and rosewater wafting in its wake as it travels the Silk Road with its bundle of spice. Fresh, fruity, juicy and good to go.

14935 MT DIFFICULTY ROARING MEG CENTRAL OTAGO PINOT NOIR 2012 $25.99 CASE OF 12 $25.00 A BOTTLE

Mt Diffi culty’s drink-now Pinot is your classic Central Otago fruit explosion, with all the red and black berry characters released in a soothingly smooth hush of crushed fruit, windblown herbs and subtle spice. A gentle dollop of the good earth seals the deal.

19311 TWO PADDOCKS PICNIC CENTRAL OTAGO PINOT NOIR 2012 $28.99 CASE OF 12 $26.00 A BOTTLE

Not a second-tier Pinot Noir, this is, rather, a wine produced from younger vines that are particularly expressive of the Central Otago terroir. A vibrant ruby wine with a fragrant bouquet of cherry and plum deftly embellished by a touch of spicy oak. Beautifully crafted and approachable.

17124 PEREGRINE CENTRAL OTAGO PINOT NOIR 2011 $38.99 CASE OF 12 $36.00 A BOTTLE

Pinot loves Central, the extremes in temperature being somewhat similar to those in Burgundy. This is markedly different: a host of charred cherries assail the nose, and it’s a perfect example of the iron fi st in the velvet glove: powerfully subtle, concentrated yet balanced and opulently restrained.

41526 CHARLES COURBET BRUT NV $29.99 CASE OF 6 $28.00 A BOTTLE

The genuine article for under $30, this is made by one of the biggest names in Champagne specifi cally for Glengarry. The initially restrained bouquet opens up to reveal fresh, attractive, biscuity aromas. Light and creamy on the palate, the Courbet is nicely balanced with a lovely crisp fi nish.

41508 MOUTARD GRANDE CUVÉE BRUT NV $39.99 CASE OF 6 $36.00 A BOTTLE

The Moutard family can trace their roots back to 1642, and this delivers a lot more than such a trifl ing price tag would suggest, the way it rolls out the door suggesting a lot of you are already onto this fact. Full bodied and intense, at 10gm/l dosage it’s at the medium-rich end of the spectrum. Great aperitif.

43500 DRAPPIER

CARTE BLANCHE BRUT NV $43.99 CASE OF 12 $39.99 A BOTTLE

The Drappier house is wonderous value, its sheer quality extremely under-rated. An explosive, rich and toasty nose emanates from the fresh, creamy palate. Out of all of the champagnes here, this has utilised the lowest amounts of sulphur; the low dosage also makes it one of the driest.

43501 DRAPPIER

CARTE D’OR BRUT NV $43.99 CASE OF 12 $39.99 A BOTTLE

Drappier once again delivers superb value for the amount of dollars required. Stonefruits abound, a hint of sweet briar, some complex minerality followed by a rush of lush richness that pushes the parameters in a most beguiling way. Like its sibling, this is low sulphur, low dosage.

48118 PIPER-HEIDSIECK CUVÉE BRUT NV $49.99They continue to ramp up the quality at Piper-Heidsieck without dialling down the exuberant charm one iota. The NV bursts with citrus/orange juiciness, surges forth on a wave of grilled toast and marzipan then soars to an apogee of excitement. Fruity, fragrant, it’s on the medium side. The perfect party wine.

40010 NICOLAS FEUILLATTE BRUT RÉSERVE NV $54.99 CASE OF 6 $49.99 A BOTTLE

Launched in 1976 by the man who hung out with Kennedys and was, um, Permanent Representative to the UN for Ivory Coast, this takes aim at the centuries-old Houses; clean and racy, it’s linked to the Arts and beholden to no one. In terms of style, it sits comfortably with Piper and Moët.

47206 MOËT & CHANDON ROSÉ IMPÉRIAL BRUT NV $69.99 CASE OF 6 $69.00 A BOTTLE

The most exquisite colour. The Pinot-derived richness is clear even on the nose, where red fruits and spice are decadently unveiled. It dances, fresh, lively, yet layered and complex, the beautifully interwoven fl avours expressed on a palate of sheer silk. Great gift idea for mums and girlfriends.

46415 LAURENT-PERRIER BRUT NV $59.99 CASE OF 6 $55.00 A BOTTLE

The Laurent-Perrier NV style is defi ned by the high proportion of Chardonnay that provides a natural purity, freshness and elegance. Delicate yet complex, the fruit gradually emerges to reveal an exquisitely balanced champagne. Sits between the lighter, more fruity expressions and the rich, exuberant styles

49810 VEUVE CLICQUOT

BRUT NV $69.99 CASE OF 6 $65.00 A BOTTLE

Force meets fi nesse. A divine cohesion of white fl owers, dried fruit, brioche and spice, with creamy Chardonnay-derived fruit fl avours surging strongly at the fi nish. Like being locked in a sumptuous patisserie and having to drink your way out. While holding a bunch of fl owers. Rocks out the door.

48210 POL ROGER BRUT RÉSERVE NV $69.99One of the last family-run Grand Marques, Pol Roger is distinctively styled, the rich white and gold fruit characters creamily dispersed upon a bed of yeasty, biscuity beauty. Possessing a wonderful balance, poise and fi nish, it is consistently one of Champagne’s greatest non-vintage wines. Aristocratic.

Page 9: Glengarry Wines December Wineletter #192

48510 LOUIS ROEDERER BRUT PREMIER NV $69.99 CASE OF 6 $68.00 A BOTTLE

One of the truly great champagne Houses, Roederer sits on the richer side of the style pendulum. The substantial addition of reserve wines results in an opulent, yeasty expression of irresistible white fruit, fl owers and vanilla spread across a creamy palate. Exceptional.

42852 DELAMOTTE ROSÉ NV $69.99 CASE OF 6 $69.00 A BOTTLE

Delamotte belongs to the same stable as the mighty Salon and, unsurprisingly, the quality level is right up there. This has weight, a heartbeat of sound, solid fruit and a core of fl avour that will rise up and meet whatever little roasted what-nots you care to throw at it. Sumptuous, slinky, superb.

41503 RUINART BRUT ROSÉ NV $89.99 CASE OF 6 $86.00 A BOTTLE

Founded in 1729, Ruinart is the oldest of the champagne Houses. One of the most attractive rosé champagnes, this is, like its siblings, made with a high proportion of Chardonnay, providing the fi nesse and elegance characteristic of this House. Comes in a very elegant, 18th-century-style bottle.

49515 TAITTINGER PRESTIGE ROSÉ NV $79.99 CASE OF 6 $78.00 A BOTTLE

The Taittinger Rosé NV is a bright and shimmering pink in the bottle, and just as vibrantly intense when it arrives in your mouth. With a good proportion of the region’s fi nest Pinot and Chardonnay added to the blend, it displays all the elegance and delicacy one would expect from such an esteemed producer.

41522 CHARLES HEIDSIECK BRUT RÉSERVE NV $84.99 CASE OF 6 $84.00 A BOTTLE

Plump, fl eshy and opulent, the new-look Charles is a triumph: Deeply golden with a complex and voluptuous nose, it dispenses its riches as warm rivers of sun-drenched fruits (mango, apricot, plum), nutty nuances of pistachio and almond, and layers of creamy texture. A tremendous wine.

40820 BOLLINGER SPECIAL CUVÉE BRUT NV $84.99 CASE OF 6 $84.00 A BOTTLE

Intensely robust and larger than life, the intense biscuit and apple characters are supported by fi rm oak. Coffee, caramel and honey augment the rich tides of fresh fruit, while the multitude of complex characters are carried by good acid and a robust frame to a phenomenal fi nish. One of the greats.

46440 LAURENT-PERRIER CUVÉE ROSÉ BRUT NV $135.00 CASE OF 6 $120.00 A BOTTLE

Ask rosé champagne afi cionados to name their top ten, and you can pretty much guarantee this wine will be in it. A sexy salmon-pink, it boasts a fi ne effervescent bead, with bright raspberries, strawberries and black cherries chasing daintily across the palate all the way to the classy end.

40817 BOLLINGER GRANDE ANNÉE 2004 $159.00 CASE OF 6 $150.00 A BOTTLE

Bollinger’s pièce de résistance, the Grande Année is Bollinger style on steroids, with the vintage stamp on top. The intense nose grabs your attention immediately. From a wonderful vintage where terroir has spoken with much eloquence, this demands time in the cellar, and will reward careful aging.

49804 VEUVE CLICQUOT LA GRANDE DAME 2004 $189.00 CASE OF 6 $180.00 A BOTTLE

Veuve’s Pinot-dominant, top-of-the-line prestige cuvée is smooth and rich, clear and precise, stylish and stunning. Fragrant and fi nely effervescent, the almond-touched, candied fruit dances across deeper notes of peat and earth. A rare and exotic experience.

47238 DOM PÉRIGNON 2004 $199.99Subtlety, elegance and refi nement mark this wine as much as its great depth of barely-restrained forceful fl avours. Unlike some recent vintages, the 2004 stands out for its reassuringly predictable characteristics; racy, singular, a pure expression of terroir, it’s a collector’s Dom, so grab one for the cellar too.

As New Zealand’s leading exponents of all things vinously effervescent (and let’s face it, we love a good party), we pride ourselves on having the most comprehensive range of champagne in the country. Hence you’ll find below a glorious selection, from the wallet-friendly expressions to the supreme rulers of the genre, with options to cover every possibility when toasting your way into the New Year. One thing’s for sure; they are, each and every one, the real thing.

20828 DE BORTOLI FAMILY SELECTION AUSTRALIAN SPARKLING BRUT NV $9.99 CASE OF 12 $9.00 A BOTTLE

An appealing blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay fruit from Aussie giants De Bortoli, this sharply-priced sparkler has a gentle effervescence and an attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas underscored by lime and mineral nuances. 54525 HENKELL TROCKEN GERMAN SPARKLING BRUT NV $13.99 CASE OF 6 $13.00 A BOTTLE

88051 PERELADA BRUT RESERVA SPANISH CAVA NV $14.99 CASE OF 6 $14.00 A BOTTLE

A serious wine, for sure, one that often slips ahead of champagnes in blind tastings, the smoky minerality of the citrus fruit lending an aristocracy that many far more expensive sparklings seem unable to conjure up. Lively, zesty, slightly fl oral, deliciously dry, it’s precise, balanced and remarkable value.

54533 MIONETTO ITALIAN MOSCATO $14.99 CASE OF 12 $14.00 A BOTTLE

A delicious Italian sparkler made from the Moscato grape; at just 7% alcohol, it’s in the light, refreshing style the Italians do so well. Off-dry in character, the Mionetto makes a great aperitif and matches exceedingly well with the traditional Italian Christmas cake, Panettone.

54531 MIONETTO ITALIAN PROSECCO $14.99 CASE OF 12 $14.00 A BOTTLE

Mionetto was founded back in 1887 by Francesco Mionetto, in the small village of Valdobbiadene in Italy’s Veneto region. A frizzante-style Prosecco with a refreshing crispness, this is soft and gentle, but still lively, with hints of green apple and white peach dancing across the tongue. Superb value.

43010 SAINT-MEYLAND FRENCH BRUT NV $16.99 CASE OF 6 $16.00 A BOTTLE

This exceptional sparkler is located a short Renault-ride from Champagne. Fermented in bottle for eighteen months á la champagne, the resultant rich yeastiness and toastiness declare it a slick charmer with irresistibly authentic credentials. If you want the French trappings without the $ outlay, here it is.

62538 SANTA MARGHERITA VALDOBBIADENE PROSECCO DOCG NV $24.99 CASE OF 6 $19.00 A BOTTLE

Delicate aromas of spring fl owers, peach and pear, with a crunch of zest and a tickle of froth that is utterly charming. A slight mineral undercurrent streaks the surging tide of integrated exotica; a fl urry of mint-tinged fresh apple will seduce you into its orbit. Go willingly, it’s lunch o’clock.

17421 ALLAN SCOTT BLANC DE BLANCS MARLBOROUGH BRUT NV $24.99 CASE OF 6 $22.00 A BOTTLE

A single vineyard, 100% Chardonnay-derived sparkler with a distinctive citrus character embellished by hints of tropical fruit and yeasty notes on the nose and palate. The generous concentration of fruit is supported by a creamy mouthfeel and complemented by a fi ne, fresh-tasting fi nish.

17230 QUARTZ REEF CENTRAL OTAGO BRUT NV $26.99 CASE OF 6 $26.00 A BOTTLE

Following a delicate and restrained aromatic introduction, the Quartz Reef throws off its initial decorum and leans in intimately with a volley of Bollinger-like asides (baked bread, yeast, apples), a stylish robustness underpinning the exquisite fl avours. Current benchmark for Central sparkling production.

10118 AKARUA CENTRAL OTAGO BRUT NV $29.99 CASE OF 6 $29.00 A BOTTLE

Central Otago’s cool nights are well suited to the production of méthodes. Using Akarua’s pristine Pinot and Chardonnay fruit, winemaker Matt Connell has fashioned an elegant aperitif-style wine with complex characters and biscuity nuances. Creamy, textural, beautifully fresh.

17742 STOKE RECOGNITION JOHN WHITI CIRRUS WHEAT 500ML SINGLE $5.99 Stoke’s Recognition range pays tribute to past employees of the McCashin’s Brewery, with this crafted by Head Brewer Sam Wilson in recognition of John Whiti. Light in the glass and boasting a big wheat aroma, it dispenses notes of banana and clove on a gently weighted palate. Everything a wheat should be.

91778 TUATARA AOTEAROA PALE ALE 500ML SINGLE $6.99 Tuatara are becoming – dare we say it? – something of an institution, with the demand for their beers reaching insatiable proportions. Aotearoa Pale Ale takes the spirit of the American PA and reanimates it with Pacifi c Jade hops (to bitter and fl avour), NZ Cascade, Nelson Sauvin and Wai-iti. Seductive.

91238 EMERSON’S BOOKBINDER ALE 500ML SINGLE $6.99 A wonderfully drinkable interpretation of a classic English ale, this is a blend of four malts combined with two classic European hops grown in Nelson. The nose exudes sweet malt and hop aromas, accompanying a soft, malty palate that is both fl avoursome and refreshing, and a long, gently drying fi nish.

91499 BLACK DOG GOLDEN LAB LAGER 500ML SINGLE $7.99

The Black Dog Brewery was conceived in New Zealand’s craft beer captial, Wellington, back in 2011. Their Golden Lab is a golden ale that’s light in colour and boasts an aromatic balance of mild hop and malt characters. The new pup in the Black Dog kennels, we think it’s pretty near perfect for summer.

91446 DALE’S BREWING CO. AMERICAN AMBER 500ML SINGLE $8.99 Upon coming down with the home brewing bug, IT systems specialist Dale Holland found himself, after recovering, the operator of Dale’s Brewing Co. European malts, a trio of American hops and an American ale yeast combine here into smooth, toasty caramel characters with a hint of stonefruit and pine.

92429 WOODFORD RESERVEKENTUCKY STRAIGHT BOURBON WHISKEY 700ML $59.99From the oldest distillery in the United States, this seductively smooth bourbon will redefi ne your perceptions of the genre. Dreamily creamy, with rich layers of dark fruits, caramel and vanilla leading to a long, languid, subtly spicy fi nish. As good as it gets.

92084 CHRISTIAN DROUIN BLANCHE DE NORMANDY CALVADOS 700ML $59.99 Normandy’s Drouin produce a highly acclaimed range of calvados and ciders that have, to date, won well over a hundred gold medals This white calvados is distilled from the very best fruit in the Drouin orchards. Excellent in a long drink after you’ve poured it over your Christmas pudding and lit it.

92239 BELVEDERE REVEALED GIFTBOX VODKA 700ML $59.00 Belvedere is handcrafted the way Polish vodka has been for over 600 years, using Dankowskie Gold Rye and pure artesian water from their own wells. It’s full and round, with a smooth, rich, velvety texture. Some light vanilla notes sway it between sweet and savoury, with a hint of white pepper and spice.

93757 BRUICHLADDICH THE BOTANIST GIN 700ML $60.00Gin lovers, take note; you’ll want to try this. The Botanist is a celebration of the distiller’s art; a small-batch, hand-crafted labour of love that fl ies in the face of more industrialized brands. Took the Diamond prize at the prestigious Monaco Concours of the Femmes et Spiriteux du Monde organisation.

92206 DARROZE LES GRANDS ASSEMBLAGES 8-YEAR-OLD ARMAGNAC 700ML $89.00 This blend of selected armagnacs (the youngest being 8 years old) is a great introduction to the talents of master bottlers Darroze. Older, in real terms, than most XO Cognacs, the spirit really sings with an abundance of vibrant fruit characters and fl oral notes, showing wonderful balance and length. 43%.

During World War I, while her husband Louis was away serving at the Russian front, the proactive Louise Sipp purchased the Domaine’s fi rst vineyard plots around the Alsatian commune of Ribeauvillé, and by 1920 this budding winery had won its fi rst awards.

No slouches themselves, Louis and his son Auguste expanded the business between Wars I and II, digging deep cellars and establishing a new processing plant. After the cessation of hostilities, the cellars were expanded and further vineyard parcels were acquired, making it the largest winegrowing domain in Ribeauvillé.

Today the Domaine is managed by Louis’ great grandson Etienne, who has converted the operation to organic production. The company combines traditional methods with modern equipment, the grapes all hand harvested and the wines produced from local wild yeasts. The resulting expressions display great fi nesse and a true affi nity for their Ribeauvillé terroir. One of Alsace’s top producers, Louis Sipp are renowned for delivering some of the region’s best value.

MARQUÉS DE CÁCERESRIOJA ROSADO 2011

RIOJAOutside of sherry, Rioja is the most internationally recognised of

Spain’s wines. Heavily infl uenced in its past by French winemaking techniques and philosophies, there are bodegas based on the grand châteaux and barriques being used in great proportion. Previously too great a proportion perhaps, but today, investment, replanting and market expectations have seen a new wave of Rioja expressions – succulent, supple, fruit-driven wines, exhilarating and exciting in their youth, yet still aging as magnifi cently as the Rioja of yore.

The regions collectively known as the Adelaide Super Zone – the Barossa Valley, Eden Valley, McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills and stretching to the bottom of the Fleurieu Peninsula – constitute Dean Hewitson’s fi eld of operations. Considered in the top echelon of Australian winemakers, Dean derives his fruit and his inspiration from some of Australia’s oldest and most treasured vineyards, many of them planted pre-phylloxera and more closely linked to the original vines of Europe.

The Hewitson wines are prized for their outstanding fl avour, balance and complexity, the sheer quality and character of Dean’s expressions guaranteeing their exalted status in cellars and restaurants around the world. A believer that wine should be a drink rather than a statement, Dean Hewitson lets his creations do the talking.
