We kick off 2014 with a brief look back over our shoulder at the 1980s a decade when Indiana Jones ran amok in temples Michael Jackson actually thrilled us the world was taken over by the CD the PC and MTV and Steve Jobs encountered his true calling Right at the end the Berlin Wall came crashing down

Back in NZ the country almost underwent binary fi ssion over the Springbok Tour the Aussie cricketers tried on underarm bowling for size Rob Muldoon experienced his own personal 1984 when he was snap-elected out of offi ce David Lange got a whiff of radiation and championed a nuclear-free New Zealand the French came to town and left with the Rainbow Warrior in pieces our collective champagne lifestyle came plummeting down with the Black Monday stock market crash and the All Blacks won the inaugural World Cup And New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc took the wine world by storm

In amongst all of that the family-owned Glengarry was hard at work on its own personal empire exploring the possibilities pushing out the boundaries The 1980s had their fair share of milestones and while there is always plenty of chatter regarding the changing nature of retail when you pare it down itrsquos still all about good-quality products and outstanding service

This edition of the Glengarry Wineletter sees the return of some names you may not have seen since those times a collection of old favourites that have dusted themselves off and made themselves over for a new generation of wine lovers It was in the 1980s that regulations regarding imported wine were relaxed and we were quick to jump on the bandwagon (wersquove not got off yet itrsquos moving so fast) Our fi rst import was Australian fi zz-kid Angas Brut Then came Bordeaux and our heart has not moved far from its borders ever since Take a trip with us down memory lane and in the process back to the future yoursquoll enjoy the ride

The two decades leading up to the end of the 20th century were exciting times with the New Zealand Government in the early 1980s fi nally allowing retailers to sell imported wines in the process giving Glengarry the opportunity to tap into a whole new world

Since its return to our shelves in sleek new livery customers have been waxing lyrical about the last time they drank Mateus roseacute Its origins date back to 1942 when Fernando Guedes set out to put Portugal on the vinous map from his small family winery Sogrape Vinhos which rose by the end of the eighties to become the largest wine producer in Portugal

The centrepiece of his agenda was the ubiquitous Mateus the fi rst wine to attain true global notoriety and today boasting a presence in more than 125 countries Salvador Guedes grandson of Fernando explains lsquoOur challenge is to sustain the Mateus as we pass it from generation to generation and thatrsquos why every so often we make subtle changes to the bottlersquo Regardless of outer appearances the unique essence of this iconic wine remains unchanged

Craft beer production and the emergence of micro-breweries has been on an upward curve for the last decade but the situa-tion some thirty years ago was quite different beer production was restricted to just two giant breweries Enter former All Black Terry McCashin a Picton publican who could not fi nd a beer he wanted to drink or serve to his customers With nothing else in the offi ng Terry decided to produce his own

The fi rst hurdle Terry had to overcome was red tape in fi fty years no-one had applied for a licence to brew beer and the only person who knew about the procedures and documentation had died In 1981 however with licence fi nally in hand The McCashin Brewery opened in Stoke Nelson making itself at home in the old Rochdale Cider factory which the family had purchased

Under head brewer Jim Pollitt McCashinrsquos Mac beers were naturally produced using only malts hops and yeast The result-ing brews ndash produced over a 12-week period and matured to perfection ndash proved to be exceedingly popular In time the Mac brand changed hands and production moved to the North Island

The McCashin family have remained in the game however with Terryrsquos son Dean and his wife Emma reopening the historic Stoke brewery from where they produce their award-winning Rochdale ciders and a premium range of Stoke craft beers The beers are batched brewed from traditional McCashin family recipes using pure Palaeo water Nelson hops premium malts and bespoke yeast with no artifi cial colouring or additives The innovation that is the hallmark of the McCashin family is very much to the fore in the Stoke brewery which boasts a 100-litre temperature-controlled pilot plant where new beer styles can be developed The superb Stoke beers created by the current McCashin generation pay a fi tting tribute to Terryrsquos legacy

We kick off 2014 with a brief look back over our shoulder at the 1980s a decade when Indiana Jones ran amok in temples Michael Jackson actually thrilled us the world was taken over by the CD the PC and MTV and Steve Jobs encountered his true calling Right at the end the Berlin Wall came crashing down

Back in NZ the country almost underwent binary fi ssion over the Springbok Tour the Aussie cricketers tried on underarm bowling for size Rob Muldoon experienced his own personal 1984 when he was snap-elected out of offi ce David Lange got a whiff of radiation and championed a nuclear-free New Zealand the French came to town and left with the Rainbow Warrior in pieces our collective champagne lifestyle came plummeting down with the Black Monday stock market crash and the All Blacks won the inaugural World Cup And New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc took the wine world by storm

In amongst all of that the family-owned Glengarry was hard at work on its own personal empire exploring the possibilities pushing out the boundaries The 1980s had their fair share of milestones and while there is always plenty of chatter regarding the changing nature of retail when you pare it down itrsquos still all about good-quality products and outstanding service
