description

While much is penned about the prices of the highly-sought after top-end Châteaux, what has not changed is Bordeaux’ central position in the world of fine wine. It remains, globally, the benchmark for Cabernet- and Merlot-based wines. Blessed with a number of excellent vintages in the last decade, two that stand out are the 2009 and 2010 vintages. Together they are, without doubt, the greatest pair of vintages in Bordeaux ever. There is much merit in looking at the second wines of the great châteaux and at the petits châteaux. The investment and innovation now involved in the production of the Bordeaux wines is truly extensive; think glass lifts for the gentle wine movement, amphorae made of clay from the vineyard, optical grape sorters. With more than three decades of importing under our belts, we are NZ’s fine wine and Bordeaux experts, and with us, you’re buying directly from the importer – no additional clipping of the ticket, just top-quality, classic wines at exceptional prices.

CHÂTEAU PAPE CLÉMENT

Charles has always been somewhat under the radar, but off the charts when it comes to quality. Always exceptional, it seems of late to have become even better. The Blanc de Millenaires is their prestige cuvée. From the very fine 1995 vintage, this is 100% Chardonnay and a paragon of precision, requiring much more time in the cellar. At the recent IWC awards, Charles Heidsieck was the most awarded champagne house, with three vintages of their Blanc de Millenaires receiving gold medals.

Quite a bit has been written of late about Bordeaux, with the market witnessing a fair amount of highs and lows in recent years. Formerly the darling of an expansive new class of Chinese society, where to be seen quaffing expensive Bordeaux was an ostentatious signal of your affluence, a government-driven programme of restraint and austerity has changed all that, with this significant customer base nowadays less about flamboyance and more about educating itself on the intricacies of Bordeaux and its wines.

Both exceptional, they have different characters, the 2009 vintage opulent and even voluptuous, the 2010 brighter, more lively and possessing a classic quality.

The list does not stop there. And then, of course, we place them into temperature-controlled containers and carefully ship them to New Zealand.

So, with all these tools and an extensive historic knowledge, what happens in great vintages like 2009 and 2010? Simply this: the Bordeaux – at all levels of the market – is quite exquisite. With that in mind, when in Bordeaux recently, Glengarry GM Liz Wheadon tasted her way through a container-load of wines to select the best possible range of second wines and petits châteaux – earlier-drinking and affordable Bordeaux expressions – to accompany the extensive array of top-tier Bordeaux residing within our cellars.

With more than three decades of importing under our belts, we are New Zealand’s fine wine and Bordeaux experts, and with us, you’re buying directly from the importer – no additional clipping of the ticket, just top-quality, classic wines at exceptional prices.

At Glengarry we’ve been stocking Brookfields wines for almost three decades, for the very good reason (apart from the fact that owner-winemaker Peter Robertson is a superbly generous and lovely man) that, year after year, regardless of vintage variables, the wines are consistently up there and always exceptional value for money.

Biochemistry graduate Peter arrived in Hawkes Bay from Otago in the early 1970s, where he proceeded to work at the McWilliams winery with the legendary Tom McDonald. In 1977 Peter purchased the Brookfields winery and redirected its focus towards producing fine table wines. Within a decade he had firmly established Brook-fields as one of Hawkes Bay’s premier wineries.

The man himself puts it thus: ‘Our philosophy is to produce fruit-driven, balanced wines that are enjoyable in their youth, have the potential to mature and are, above all, good with food. We are currently planting new varietal clones with the aim of improving the quality of the yields, because I believe that great wines are made from superior fruit.’

With no signs of taking the foot off the pedal, then, Brookfields’ impressively conceived wine ranges continue to set a benchmark within Hawkes Bay’s winemaking community.

A classy, single vineyard Syrah off the Ohiti Estate’s Back Block, renowned for producing a consistent flow of premium fruit. Polished and aromatic, it displays abundant spice-edged plum and berry characters, lovely textures, rounded tannins and a lingering, flavoursome aftertaste.

CASE OF 12 $16.99 A BOTTLE

Peter Robertson has spent a lifetime honing an Alsatian sensibility, producing this little gem well before Madame Gris became quite so fash-ionable. With its vivacious, dry, aromatic palate and lively acidity, this is lighter and more floral than its counterparts from Alsace.

BROOKFIELDS ROBERTSON PINOT GRIS 2014

CASE OF 12 $16.99 A BOTTLE

One of the few 100% Kiwi Cabernet Sauvignons around, this languidly exudes a smoky, lifted, dark berryish fragrance. The medium bodied fruit is adorned with hints of cassis and liquorice underpinned by spritely acidity and some gentle but persistent tannins. Youthful, flavoursome.

BROOKFIELDS BACK BLOCK SYRAH 2014

2013 was a superb vintage in the Bay. Match that with a longtime classic, the Brookfields Bergman Chardonnay, and yes, ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner. Consistently superb yet enticingly affordable, it is without question one of our best, and best value, Chardonnays. Rich and elegant, creamy and versatile, it’ll work beautifully with a wide variety of dishes.

LITTLE BROTHERS MARGAUX

CASE OF 12 $53.00 A BOTTLE

$56.00 44652

BARON DE BRANE MARGAUX 2009

The Baron was responsible for recognising the importance of Cabernet Sauvignon in the Médoc in the 1830s, and thus became known as the Napoléon des Vines. Intensely aromatic, this has beautifully rich, bold, ripe fruit characteristic of the generous 2009 vintage, and the wine itself shows remarkable concentration. Smart wine, smart price.

CASE OF 12 $63.00 A BOTTLE

$66.00 44654

LA SIRÈNE DE GISCOURS MARGAUX 2010

Château Giscours’ second wine is predominantly a Cabernet Merlot blend, with the Cabernet taking the lead and a bit of Franc and Petit Verdot keeping things interesting. Brimming with currants, floral notes and dark fruits, the alluring palate is well-in-tegrated and sleekly finished. With age, further fi-nesse is promised. The siren calls.

CONFIDENCES DE PRIEURÉ-LICHINE MARGAUX 2010

Unusually for Bordeaux’ Left Bank, the second wine of Château Prieuré-Lichine is Merlot dominant, although only just, being in reality more a game of two halves with its high percentage of Cabernet. Displays all the fragrance and charm you’d expect from a Margaux, with the hallmark acidity, vibrancy and drive of the exquisite 2010 vintage.

BIG BRO

BORDEAUXLITTLE BROTHERS

Once you have tasted a few of these superb expressions, you’ll concur that referring to them as ‘second wines’ could come across as a little miserly. We feature here some of the great estates from the 1855 classification of Bordeaux’ left bank, together with their little brother, or second wine. We also travel to the other bank.

The concept of second wines was initially created to improve the quality of the top wines by isolating the finest fruit, with the little brothers invariable produced from the estate’s younger vines. Nowa-days, thanks to a great deal of concentrated effort, these second wines are more an early-drinking expression of the top wine rather than a ‘second wine’ with the drop in quality that title implies.

While the Grand Cru Classé (big brother) wines here come from a variety of vintages, all the second wines are from the exceptional 2009 and 2010 vintages. Many of these are drinking superbly right now, but will also benefit from short- to medium-term cellaring – certainly less cellaring than the Grand Cru Classe wines will require.

LITTLE BROTHERS SAINT-JULIEN

CASE OF 12 $49.00 A BOTTLE

$55.00 44653

DULUC DE BRANAIRE-DUCRU SAINT-JULIEN 2010

The second wine of the high-flying 2nd-Growth Château Branaire-Ducru. This is, quite simply, stunning. If we had to pick out one from all these superb wines, this would be it. One word: balance. Generous fruit, superb concentration, beautifully integrated, well-formed tannins, a fresh and lively palate, exquisite length. Has it all. A case is a must.

CASE OF 12 $64.00 A BOTTLE

$69.00 44656

SARGET DE GRUAUD-LAROSE SAINT-JULIEN 2009

Château Gruaud-Larose is consistently one of the best Saint-Julien wines from one vintage to the next, and its little brother has shown a similar evenness of temperament since its introduction in 1979. Intense but charming, it offers up luxuriant aromas of preserved plums and bold cassis across a concentrated yet deliciously smooth palate.

LES FIEFS DE LAGRANGE SAINT-JULIEN 2010

A perfect pair to compare would be this and the 2009 Le Petit Lion (which is, fortuitously, right alongside). It is, you see, all about the Saint-Julien terroir, expressed through the fine and elegantly balanced 2010 vintage, sans the exuberance of the 2009. This is, then, Cabernet dominant, savoury and earthy in style, and rather classic in character.

CASE OF 12 $99.00 A BOTTLE

$110.00 44658

LE PETIT LION DU MARQUIS DE LAS CASES SAINT-JULIEN 2009

From the generous and fruit-loving 2009 vintage, this is the second wine of the rather large 2nd-Growth Château Léoville-Las-Cases. The forward nature of the vintage somewhat blurs the Saint-Ju-lien terroir, with the wine here being more about gorgeous fruit ripeness, supple, easy-to-approach tannins and a lengthy and lingering finish.

CASE OF 12 $56.00 A BOTTLE

$59.00 44668

FUGUE DE NÉNIN POMEROL 2010

Unlike many of the vintages in Bordeaux, where one category – either the Merlot-dominant or the Cabernet-dominant – outperforms the other, 2010 was uniformly exceptional across the region. The 2nd wine of Right Bank high fliers Château Nénin is a lightly perfumed, superbly supple mouthful of mocha, spice and rich, softly rounded flavours.

LES ALLÉES DE CANTEMERLE HAUT-MÉDOC 2010

Les Allées comes off Cantemerle’s younger vines, and is made so similarly to the style of its bigger brother it would be intriguing to taste them along-side one another. This brims with vibrant, youthful exuberance, fruit to the fore, the structure sturdy, the overall impression one of class and breeding while offering approachable flavour and texture.

CASE OF 6 $31.00 A BOTTLE

$34.00 44662

CHAPELLE DE POTENSAC MÉDOC 2009

Chapelle is the second wine of Haut-Médoc heavy-weight Château Potensac. Though not a Bordeaux classified growth, Potensac was one of the very best value-for-money wines from the once-in-a-lifetime vintage that was 2009. Generous, round, ripe, red fruit characters dominate this delightful, softly structured, early-drinking Bordeaux gem.

Château Calon-Ségur’s second label is a bench-mark for the much-hyped 2010 vintage and it’s a brilliant bargain to boot, showing all the class, complexity and finesse of wines much higher up the classification tree. The northernmost-classed growth of Saint-Estèphe, this Château is held in high esteem. An absolute classic.

CLÉMENTIN DE PAPE CLÉMENT PESSAC-LÉOGNAN 2010

While Pessac-Léognan displays a fruit breakdown similar to that of the Médoc, there is a distinct and identifiable mineral character to its wines. The Clémentin is Cabernet-dominant, off 30-year-plus vines, its smoky, spice-edged palate concentrated, lithe, almost chewy, with a warming earthiness that augments the jammy, ripe fruit. French to the core.

LA PARDE DE HAUT-BAILLY PESSAC-LÉOGNAN 2009

Haut-Bailly’s little brother from the 2009 vintage offers all the minerality and precision of the 2010 wines from this area, along with the generosity of ripe, succulent fruit the 2009 vintage affords. The combination, in this earlier drinking expression, of Pessac-Léognan’s attributes and the 2009 vintage is a match made in heaven.

ECHO DE LYNCH-BAGES PAUILLAC 2010

One of the many Bordeaux properties who have, of late, outperformed their classified standing and historic quality, offering far more than anticipated. PETITS CHÂTEAUXThere are frequently bargains to be had within the Petit Château

early-drinking portfolio. While the brilliant 2009 and 2010 models are long gone, all is not lost, with subsequent vintages offering their own brand of immediate enjoyment, particularly the rather attractive 2011 vintage and the underrated 2012. We have tasted, tested and traipsed our way through hundreds of wines to find these, the Petits Châteaux from lesser but still worthy vintages that are at the top of their class.

PERRIER-JOUËTShrewdly embracing their unmistakable Art Nouveau livery,

Perrier-Jouët exude French élan and style from every pore. Since their inception in 1811, the focus has been on small-scale production, with refinement and subtlety key elements in their florally-inclined, Chardonnay-dominant champagnes. Their accumulated wisdom is handed down from one cellar master to the next. Current guardian of this heritage is Hervé Deschamps, cellar master since 1993, and apprenticed to the previous cellar master for the ten years before that. The first house to release a dry champagne, way back in 1854, they stand as originators of the Brut style dominating proceedings today.

MUMMYep, kilolitres of this have been sprayed all over podiums across

the globe post-Formula 1’s gladitorial bouts. Seems like a waste of perfectly good champagne to us, but what do we know? The famously red-striped bubbly is a well-loved classic with its rich, intense flavours of vanilla-infused peach and apple, honey and caramel. The Mumm lineage boasts barons and knights and can be traced back to the 12th century, with three German brothers, Gottlieb, Jacobus and Philipp Mumm, spotting the potential of the sparkling tipple favoured by Euro royalty and setting up shop in Reims in 1827.

VINTAGE

Vintage port is made entirely from the grapes of a declared vintage year. With

reputations on the line, the decision to declare is always carefully assessed

by the port houses. Vintage ports are aged for up to two and a half years in

barrel before bottling, and after that, you can wait another ten to forty years

for them to hit their maximum potential. The better ones can continue to drink

brilliantly for decades beyond even that. Patience, then, and an eye for the

long game, are requirements. Can’t wait? Try a ruby, a tawny or an LBV.

BEYOND LE VIN

12

The French may not have invented wine, but they have pioneered practically every conceivable style, and in doing so have set the benchmark for quality and influenced winemakers throughout the world. And as with the likes of Italy and Spain, they have an innate and enlightened understanding that wine is a companion to food.

Although the French are inextricably linked with wine, they have at the same time created a diverse range of alternative alcoholic beverages offering a wide variety of aromatic flavours and rich textures. From the controversial Absinthe to the regal cognacs, their spirits and liqueurs have stamped their dominance on the world. The likes of calvados, vermouth and pastis can be enjoyed as aperitifs to stimulate the palate either prior to or after a meal.

And, in spite of all of the above, there is, too, a place within the Gallic heart for an artfully executed beer.

$54.99 92966

MARGARET RIVER SHIRAZ 2012

CAPTION

$34.99 20514

While no tale of outlaws and indians, this is nonetheless a western legend of sorts: Western Australia’s Cape Mentelle is one of Margaret River’s five founding wineries. David Hohnen, along with brothers Mark and Gus, planted a 16-hectare vineyard in 1969, and in 1970 established Cape Mentelle Vineyards.

In 1983 the fledgling winery from a region with no previous wine credentials created a stir when their Cabernet Sauvignon won the coveted Jimmy Watson Memorial Award for Best Dry Red wine. They went on to win the trophy the following year, establishing Margaret River as a region capable of producing premium wines.

Since its inception, Cape Mentelle has forged a global reputation pioneering many of the red and white styles of the district. It has been instrumental in defining Margaret River’s regional character and is considered the benchmark for the quality of the region’s wines.
