Happy birthday, Glengarry Ellerslie! Yep, one year ago we opened a new store in the historic Auckland suburb. This vibrant little community is located along-side the Southern Motorway, just 7km south of central Auckland, and we’re right at the centre of it. Take the Tecoma St off-ramp and you’ll find yourself bang in the middle of the township, with our store located at 87 Main Highway in the old Southern Cross Building.

Our Ellerslie store is helmed by the irrepressible Madeleine Sharpin who, with the Advanced Level WSET and Professional Wine Studies under her belt, is currently working towards a qualification in International Business and Marketing while managing Ellerslie fulltime. Madeleine is very passionate about her store, and with the impressive amount of wine knowledge at her fingertips, she’ll be able to enlighten you on pretty much anything you need to know.

To celebrate our first year here, Madeleine and her team are hosting a 3-day celebration from Thursday the 6th to Saturday the 8th of September. On the Thursday evening Moa Brewery’s Josh Scott will be instore conducting a craft beer tasting; Friday night, it’s the turn of Glengarry’s effervescent Fine Wine Consultant, Regan McCaffery, to conduct a champagne tasting (a subject he knows intimately); then on Saturday afternoon, we’ll be doing a test-run through some of the new 2012 wines featured within this publication.

Of course there’ll be some outstanding birthday deals instore, and with every 12-bottle purchase made over the three-day period, we’ll throw in a twin-pack of Riedel glasses – a small birthday gift from us to you. Knowing how you love your Riedel in Ellerslie, we will also have some razor-sharp deals available on their Vinum range of glassware.

No birthday celebration is complete without a bit of birthday cake, and we’ve had mini cupcake versions made of the one that Madeline is holding in order to spread the love. Here’s to many more years as part of the Ellerslie community.

The vastly experienced Peter Saunders delivers up a great value, single vineyard Pinot from his own Waipara estate. Vibrantly ruby-esque in the bottle, the classic varietal aromas of black cherry are coloured with spice and a sensibly grounded touch of earthiness. Medium-weighted, nicely rounded, ridiculously priced.

Wearing its perfume on its sleeve, the Tiki wafts an enticing combination of peach, passionfruit and the tropics your way before pinning on its classic herbaceous flavours of gooseberry, topped off with an eye-opening splash of zingy citrus. Great wine, stonking value.

Charm and finesse are two words right at home in the Spy residence. With six different clones, indigenous yeasts, French oak, lees stirring and subtle malolactic, there has evidently been some serious work done out the back. Finally, though, it arrives in the glass, where a deliciously creamy texture envelops the citrus-laced tropical flavours in a quiet embrace that leaves you hankering for more.

An exceptional vintage merges with a great house to provide an irresistible combination. The Brut Rosé rides delicately in on an aromatic cloud of rose petals. But don’t be fooled; this Pinot-driven rosé is rich and weighty, effortlessly combining body with finesse. There are few of the 2002 vintage left on our shelves, but it’s no great surprise that the quality fiends at Pol Roger have given this Lovely extended time to mature before allowing it out of the house. That’s what we’d do if it were our daughter.

Intensely golden, with a healthy sparkle in its eye and a delicate bouquet of fresh fruit, white flowers and sweet spices. Displaying a generous palate of fruit and pastries nuanced with honeyed apricots & poached pears, the Brut Vintage is lushly rounded and tautly textured. With 12 years on the clock, it is drinking beautifully right now, but will reward those with the patience to pop it into the cellar.

Few champagne houses remain in family hands. The impressively-pedigreed Pol Roger is one of them. Residing in the heart of Epernay with cellars running immediately below the Avenue de Champagne for over seven kilometres, they are highly-skilled vinous alchemists in possession of an exquisite collection of wines. Not one of the region’s show ponies, Pol none-theless lead the charge from the front.

The English obviously love them, with Pol Roger one of only eight houses to bear the English Royal Seal and the late Winston Churchill clutching Pol to his steely heart as a personal favourite. They gained what many would regard as the ultimate royal approval when handed the prized task of providing the wedding champagne for the wee shindig recently held by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

‘Enough personality to be a vintage champagne,’ say Wine Spectator, and its frothy vivacity makes the Pol NV both widely respected and hugely popular. An aristocratic yet approachable wine, it delivers layer upon layer of exquisitely balanced flavour and texture, its richly lush fruit and toast defined by precise and refreshing citrus and acid.Withheld for double the amount of time required before release, it is consistently outstanding.

This is both a good and a bad news story: the good news has to be the deal: at $19.99 it’s a price never before seen for this wine; plus, purchase it and you’re in the draw to win a limited edition print. The bad news? It’s your last chance to buy this quality-driven sparkler, with Trinity discontinuing production. A rich and creamy Chardonnay-based méthode, it shows its winemaking finesse and has benefited greatly from spending the last two years in the bottle.

A mutation of the mysterious and elusive Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris possesses its own degree of unpredictability, coming as it does in a wide range of styles that can leave one a little uncertain of what to expect. In NZ our style is varied and only just starting to establish a defined character, with two regions leading the charge for the crown: Marlborough leans towards the richer stylings, a la Alsace, while the Central Otago wines tend to be drier. One thing’s for certain; you can’t make many generalizations when it comes to the intriguing PG.

Nothing says the sun’s come out like a nice chilled glass of rosé. The styles are diverse, with some produced from free-run juice (the first juice off the red grapes), while others are made by adding a little red to the white. Colour can be deceiving; for instance, the lightest here, the Riotor, is pretty and fragrant, yet on the palate impressively weighty. And it’s our top-selling rosé. As a warm weather enhancer, rosé is brilliant; if you haven’t discovered that yet, it’s time to catch up.

Finocchiona is a traditional Tuscan salami made from finely-ground pork and flavoured with fennel that takes its name from finocchio, the Italian word for the fragrant herb. A popular delicacy in Tuscan parts, it is great served solo or as part of an antipasto platter. As in France, the food and wine of Italy’s regions are designed to go together, so try this with a chilled glass of Vernaccia or a spicy Chianti.

56838 lEvONI salame finocchiona 80g $8.90

A traditional Burgundian cheese, its pungent aroma not for the faint-hearted. A washed rind cheese, the exterior is distinctly orange, the interior a light yellow and somewhat creamy. As it ripens, the centre goes all gooey and almost runs off the plate. It can be consumed young, while the centre is still firm (at this point it is mild and creamy, not unlike Port Salut) or when ripe, when it is runny and quite strong. Its Burgundian origins pair it well with Pinot and Chardonnay, though a crisp Riesling is good company too.

recipe by dida’s head chef, vincent marshall

What’s the best way to store cheese? The best way is not to. Where applicable, have it cut off a larger piece and eat it shortly thereafter. Be sure to take the cheese from the fridge and bring it to room temperature before serving.

Pedigree and consistency are the hallmarks of this, Gibbston Valley’s standard-bearing Pinot. A blend of hand-harvested, estate-grown fruit, it wraps its aromas of cherry, cassis and spicy oak around a richly flavoured palate. Fragrant, elegant, complex, earthy, softly intense. It’s good to go, but if you have the patience, it’ll sleep nicely in the cellar for 8-10.

Gibbston Valleycentral otago Pinot Noir 2010

Back in 1981 Gibbston Valley’s Alan Brady planted 350 vines, releasing his first wine in 1987. Twenty five years on and around 300 awards later, Gibbston Valley has gained global recognition for its quintessential Central Otago Pinots.

These days they own eight vineyards in Gibbston and Bendigo. GV’s Winemaker Christopher Keys explains: ‘Each site provides a different terroir, resulting in wines with distinctive flavour profiles that give us the opportunity to celebrate the diversity of the region.’ That statement of intent is realised beautifully in their exceptional single vineyard expressions.

While the company’s main focus is undoubtedly Pinot Noir, it also boasts a collection of other varietals, all crafted with the same meticulous attention to detail that is the defining signature of this Central Otago institution.

Gibbston Valley

Once again, the hand harvesting of fruit reflects Gibbston Valley’s deep-seated respect for the traditional approach. Ambrosial aromas of lemon peel and rose petal are edged by mineral notes, the palate itself keenly focused, off-dry, with the intense stonefruit flavours nuanced by a bracing lime-accented character. Works beautifully as an aperitif, equally well paired with food.

The ‘château-on-the-side’ of Christian Moueix, the owner of Pomerol’s dazzling Château Petrus, Puy-Blanquet is located within Pomerol’s neighbouring appellation, Saint-Émilion. The Merlot dominated Puy-Blanquet wines benefit from amazing vine age, with the 2009 exhibiting all the hallmarks of this great vintage, i.e. super-ripe fruit, bold tannins and the class that is encountered in all Moueix wines. With a portion of the wine aged in new oak, it is still quite young; if you are going to try it now, give it some time in a decanter (May we suggest a Riedel one?). Will benefit from 5–10 years tucked away in the cellar. Go for a case; you won’t regret it.

2009frAnce’s unforgettable vintage

It’s rare to hear such unanimous praise for a vintage; when it came to 2009, winemakers, merchants and the wine press seemed to speak with one voice, with the word of the moment being ‘outstanding.’

So what’s all the fuss about? Almost perfect growing conditions produced some amazingly bold, fruit-driven wines. Combine that with the pedigree of perhaps the world’s greatest terroir, and these wines are going to last a very long time – we’re talking 40–60 years.

The unfortunate news in a vintage like this is that many of the top wines have already been sold. We did offer them at the time via our en primeur website, and congratulate our customers that took advantage of the opportunity to purchase early at a reduced price (to be part of the action next year visit www.enprimeur.co.nz).

All is not lost, however; some stocks of the top wines have just landed and are listed here. The great news, of course, is that it’s not just the top classified wines that excelled in 2009, the ‘second’ wines of the classifieds are knock-outs too, as are the petits châteaux, entry-level wines that over-deliver in the quality stakes. Here’s an idea: purchase some 2009 wines for the cellar, then forget about them for a while and enjoy the rewards of your wisdom in the years to come.
