High Five

I’ve been reminding children of the first step in our High Fivefrequently of late.

It’s occurred to me that many children consider this guide tobe something that you only need to refer to when someone isbothering you, or there’s about to be an argument or fight. Forthese children the last one or two steps are what they’re mostlikely to remember, if at all.

The first three steps in this guide are a solid mantra for allinteractions, every day. It reminds me of a saying that’s beenaround forever – at least since my grandmother’s day.

Mr DamienForsyth-StewartDeputy Principal

A quick search in the Wikipedia, Wiktionary reveals this means–

“It's easier to persuade others with polite requests and apositive attitude rather than with rude demands and negativity.”

The interactions that lead to conflict are often those where weare trying to persuade someone in some way:

We can’t always have our own way. If we did, others wouldalways give in and not get their way, and likely not feel so good.So learning to graciously accept a knock back is a valuablelesson.

Children need adults to model using polite, friendly languageand they need help to practise the same ways of talking. Polite, inclusive, friendly interactions will be the foundation of polite, inclusive and friendly relationships.

Children Left Unattended

Last week I was prompted to find out what the law says aboutchildren being left alone. I found two useful references – thefirst from Queensland Police and the second from Slater andGordon Lawyers. I thought all parents might be interested.

Police would like to remind parents that under Queenslandlaw, it is illegal to leave a child under 12 unattended for anunreasonable time without making reasonable provision for thesupervision and care of the child.

http://mypolice.qld.gov.au/townsville/2013/11/13/never-leave-babies-and-children-unattended-in-cars/

Queensland

Legislation: Queensland Criminal Code Act 1899(QLD) - Section 364A

In Queensland and Victoria particularly, these laws mean if youleave a child unattended, whether it be in a car or at home, andthat child is left for an unreasonable time and no reasonableprovision for the supervision and care of that child has takenplace, then ultimately you have committed a misdemeanour.

Most people may think that’s harsh, but what we need todo, is give due regard to the word ‘unreasonable’ and how it

applies in each case… Follow the link for the rest of Emma’sdiscussion. Emma Aldersea , Slater and Gordon Lawyers.

Parenting Articles

Each SCHOME I add a short article I hope you’ll find of interest. The articles come from a publication, Parenting Insights, byMichael Grose

http://parentingideas.com.au/Home

This fortnight, Michael Grose, our Parenting writer has providedus an article that gets us thinking about how to help move ananxious child, a worrier, to a confident child, a warrior. Even ifyou’ve not got an anxious child, the tips are useful in dealingwith the situations that arise when we all feel worried.

Regards,Lloyd Perkins

Deputy’s DeskFirstly, I would like to thank all of you forthe positivity demonstrated upon myreturn. It is indeed a pleasure to return tothe Gordonvale Community setting wherestudents, staff and parents are alwaysextremely welcoming. Secondly I need tothank Mr Allen, Mrs Janse and MsReichardt for their contributions in myabsence.

NAPLAN commenced this week for ourYear 3 and 5 students. This presentsanother opportunity for us to recognise the

strengths and deficits in student learning and implement ateaching response to address and strengthen what we find. This process reflects a learning journey resulting in betteroutcomes for our kids.

The athletics carnival is fast approaching and students areparticipating in opportunities to learn and develop skills andproficiencies in preparation for this event.

Information for 100 Club participants for term 4, 2015 andterm 1, 2016 will be shared in the next couple of weeks.Congratulations to the students who have achieved thismagical milestone.

Explicit Teaching

On Thursday afternoon I was privilegedto attend the last of 4 Explicit TeachingModules presented by Anna Caveliereand Matt Allen. Explicit Teaching is aregional priority and has been provento increase students’ progress by up to2 years.

The Module that I attended was on Consolidations.Consolidations occur during Literacy and Numeracy lessonsand usually last up to 20 minutes. Consolidations are a way forstudents to move skills and concepts that have been explicitlytaught from short to long term memory. There are 3components of a consolidation – Recite, Recall and Apply.

An Example of consolidations for times tables may look like this:

Recite 3 x 1 = 3, 3 x 2 = 6, 3 x 3 = 9 …..

Recall 3 x 1 =? 3 x 2 =? …

Apply There were 3 boys, each boy had 6 pencils. How manypencils were there all together?

Positive Behaviour Learning Team

Would you like to have your opinions heard? Well we would loveto hear them!

The ‘Effective Behaviour Support’ or EBS Survey is an annualassessment of the effectiveness of the behaviour supportsystems within our school. The survey examines the statusand need for improvement of these systems and is then usedin the development of the annual action plan for the ‘PositiveBehaviour for Learning’ (PBL) team.

We understand that your time is valuable and have devised aquick and simple survey to ensure that your voice is heard. Please complete the survey at:

Chaplain News

Miss Amy Meehan, SchoolChaplain

"I'm really excited to have just attendedprofessional development to become aCompanion. I am now able to facilitate theSeasons for Growth educational program!

‘Seasons for Growth’ is a small group lossand grief education program. The programstrengthens the social and emotional

wellbeing of children aged 6 -12 who are dealing with significantloss or change. This may include the death of a loved one, parental divorce or separation, the experience and aftermath ofnatural disaster, moving house or school, as well as many otherlife changes and losses.

As a trained Companion I'd support small groups of 4-7children in learning new ways to share, think about and respondto the changes and losses in their lives. Children learn thatthey are not alone in dealing with the effects of change, lossand grief. They build their understanding and communication, decision making and problem solving skills as part of asupportive peer group.

The Seasons for Growth Program takes place over a structuredeight week period filled with peer-to-peer learning opportunities. The story of the seasons is used to explain the cycles of life, including change and loss, and provides a valuable metaphorfor children to explore and understand their own story.

It is offered over three levels: Level 1 (6-8y/o) Level 2 (9-10y/o)Level 3 (11-12y/o). Please note it is recommended siblings donot attend the program together.

I am hoping to get started by running one Level of the programin the second half of the year. If this sounds like a programthat might benefit your child please contact me [email protected] and I can provide you with moreinformation. "
