I am a Chinese American and went to school my whole life in America. I always spoke Chinese at

with my friends but I guess because I never went through the normal American schooling I did

Feedback on e-GMAT course

After 4 attempts, I actually wanted to get a private tutor but I don't know what stopped me and I decided to enroll into a E-GMAT course. It was my best choice!!! I know they are known for improving

verbal for nonnatives and I am a native but there was something in me that I never really wanted

to admit. The reasons why my CAT scores varied so much is because of my verbal.

Tips for preparation:

1. Understand your weaknesses: The most important thing to understand to score well on the GMAT is to understand your weaknesses. Do not lie to yourself and whenever you do not

understand a question, dissect the question. Dissect yourself. What do you lack to understand

this question?

640 to 730 in 45 days - Tips to get 700+

Background

I'm an Indian entrepreneur, applying to the Top 4 US B-schools and was targeting 700+ (I scored 730

- Q50, V39). I wrote my first GMATPrep and discovered that Verbal is going to be my 'pain in all the

wrong places'. A 640 with a V29 confirmed that I needed to take a course for Verbal. As is the common

joke, Asians are great at Quant and Indians esp. can pretty much recite the 36 tables reverse at

midnight - so Quant was really not that much of a scare


I took only the SC Course from e-GMAT. I must say the e-GMAT Course is MINDBLOWINGLY

AWESOME for any Indian student as it clears a lot of basics and provides you the steps essential to solve

GMAT SC questions. I quickly noticed a jump in my Scores.

On a deep dive analysis, I realized that I was making 70% of my CR mistakes in Weakening and

Inference questions and I focused on these 2 topics in the e-GMAT CR course and voila! My accuracy

improved dramatically.

Tips for preparation:

1. Get Your Basics Right: I think the most important part is to get your basics right - CR & SC are

very workable and can be perfected with the right coaching.

2. If you are confused whether to take the test on the decided date: I was pretty confident

I'd get a 700 by the last week but I still wasn't sure so I took the GMATPrep Tests 3 and 4

and trust me, its the best predictor of your actual score. GMATPrep 4 actually predicted the

EXACT score that I would get 2 days later in the real GMAT. So, its a good tool for you to

decide if you actually want to take the test on your decided date or push it for a little more

learning space.

SANDEEP RAMESH, 720(V41)

For re-takers, if you really wish to see a high improvement in your

score, do try e-gmat. Improvement is guaranteed. If I can get a 41 in my

verbal after scoring 21 in my first attempt, I believe anyone of you can

do it.

A small debrief - from 580(V21) to 720(V41)

Background

Started way back in feb-2013, my preparation was mainly on verbal. I was pretty good at math so put

in less efforts for it. I studied with the local materials I had and others from internet. Took a couple

of main exams and went to GMAT for my first attempt. No surprises that I got just a 580. Verbal was

a fiasco, just managed to get 21.


SC sessions, led by Payal, were one of the best I attended. Her session on meaning changed my

approach towards SC and I started to like the subject.

Pre-thinking approach n CR is another one that really works when it becomes a second nature to you

when you solve CR questions. I tried my best to pre-think for most of the CRs and that made a

difference.

Key tips for success

1. Take many mocks: I made sure I took enough mocks, close to 10, before I appeared for my

second attempt and each of these were full length and even tried my best to simulate them to the

original test with the breaks and others. Thanks to these tests, I felt the main exam similar to my

2. Maintain your cool: Even if you have mastered you concepts, what really matters is how cool you

are at the G-day. Take as many mocks as you can and help yourself stay at ease with your exam.

People say its no magic to score well on GMAT and you need to work

Feedback on e-GMAT methodology

The difference in my preparation the second attempt was the emphasis on meaning analysis instead

of learning grammar and the application of 3-step process for SC. Understanding the meaning first

brought clarity of sentence structure (and hence the faults there) and also helped eliminate options

without even worrying about grammar.

Process of Elimination with the 8 error types: I know it seems exhaustive at first to analyze all 8 types

for every question, but it is important to reject an option for valid reasons and not just because we feel

it is incorrect. I practiced PoE for all 140 questions of OG12 got an accuracy of 88% on them.

Tips for GMAT

1. Develop a solving Methodology: It is absolutely essential to develop a solving methodology

which works for you 90% of the time and to stick to it. You need to have a defined strategy

to approach every question (at least in verbal) and you need to trust that strategy to work.

2. Test your Methodology: The final few days prior to the exam, I spent my time giving mocks

and practicing from Grockit, UGEs and OG12. I scored 730/750/760 on the official GMAT

prep software.

3. Meaning analysis in SC overrides grammar

4. Eliminate choices for the correct reason and not on a hunch

5. For SC and CR, read the question slowly and understand the meaning so that you need not

read it again and again

6. Dont overlook quant, devote sufficient time to the basic concepts

7. Solve Official Guide and analyze each question irrespective of whether you got it wrong or

right.

8. Keep a track of your performance and work upon your weak areas, a simple excel or piece

of paper would do.

9. Pre-think in AWA before typing your responses and do a final check for typos and

grammatical errors.

10. Keep a track of time in IR as data intensity can sometimes entangle you.

750 Good habits and sound strategies can do wonders

Background:

I am an accounting professional with one of the majors. I have a reasonably demanding profession

(9 hours daily, not crazy like bankers) which does give me time to study.


A couple of weeks into my break, I attended a free session by e-GMAT. While I always knew the

importance of meaning, the session demonstrated how to employ meaning to get to the right answer.

Without the use of complex grammatical terms, we were able to solve some very challenging

questions.

I signed up for the eGMAT free trial and did a couple of concepts. I decided to attend a free session on

CR. I thoroughly enjoyed the session and decided to purchase Verbal Live Prep. It was the turning point

in my prep.

Tips for Preparation:

Critical Reasoning

1. Know the Conclusion: You should know the conclusion 110%. This means that what the

conclusion talks about and what is does not.

2. Understanding the possibilities with the conclusion.

3. Understand the scope of choices: Understand the keywords, know your relative pronouns

and understand the structure of choices. Note choices become more difficult as you score

higher on the GMAT.

Sentence Correction

1. Read slowly: read the given sentence slowly and understand its meaning by focusing on

sentence structure.

2. Know your rules well: You show know the grammar rules, be absolutely familiar with Verb-ed and Verb-ing modifier usage and the logic behind parallel lists. There are tons of great

article by e-GMAT on these topics.



LUCIANO CARTEL 690 (V37)

My improvement is 13 points on verbal section! My initial target was 10

I'm from Brazil and the verbal section was really challenging to me because of difficult vocabulary

and short timing to work on each question. It is not easy for a non-native speaker recognize the

pattern used on GMAT verbal section and E-gmat platform help you on that.


SC: The theory and examples used are very easy to understand and the way E-Gmat presents the

content is very illustrative and facilitates memorization. It's is an excellent material.

CR: It is really great material that helps you to understand what the question wants you to

recognize. After some time, when you read the passage, you start to recognize the type of question

and to remember how the question look like. You can recognize a pattern among questions and

improve speed and accuracy.

RC: It was the most difficult part to me. GMAT texts are very detailed and boring. When you start

reading a passage, it is very easy to get lost in the middle. In my point of view, there is no trick to get

questions correct besides improve comprehension. I improved my comprehension skills watching

E-gmat videos and solving many questions on Grockit website. I also spent a lot of time evaluating

wrong answers.

IR: The concept videos are very good and give you a very good idea about different type of

questions you can found on your GMAT test



RISHI NAG, 740 (V40)

e-GMAT SC is clearly a gold-mine for GMAT SC that helped me improve

from V28 to V40 in 30 days!

680 (V28) to 740(V40) in 30 days

Background:

Post my attempt at GMAT on July 1, 2013, I was disheartened as I got 680 (Q51 V28) - a score that

was extremely skewed towards quant. For some initial days, I was under in a state of shock and

dilemma to leave altogether my MBA plans or go with this score. However, by July 11, 2013 I made

up my mind to give GMAT again as I did goof-up in my earlier attempt.


To attack sentence correction I forgot all the question banks I had in my computer and just started

reading basics again from Wren and Martin, post that I took a risk of buying the e-GMAT course. And

to my surprise, it was my best investment ever.


Use e-GMAT for Sentence Correction

Primarily I did three data sources for my entire SC preparation

1. e-GMAT Course

2. OG Sentence Correction Section - Analysed each and every question and all the options,

whether correct or incorrect from gmatclub and other sources

3. OG Verbal Review 2 - Saw the Youtube videos uploaded by e-GMAT

4. Wren and Martin to clear some of my grammar concepts.

Personally, I believe these three sources were far more than sufficient for even me, who was

extremely weak in SC. In addition, I always referred back to

Use Mock Tests to build Timing Strategy

Apart from SC, I was not good in timing strategy. I started giving Kaplan Tests. By my 5th mock test,

my speed increased overall to a level, where I was able to complete Quant section within 70

minutes and the Verbal section within the stipulated time.



KAASHI 760 (V41)

For people having trouble with Verbal, especially SC, I will strongly

recommend e-GMAT

Background:

I am an engineering grad and have a diploma in management. I currently work in investment

banking division of one of the top investment banks in India. Given my occupation profile, time is

the supreme luxury for me and I had to finish the GMAT in ~1 month from starting the

preparations.


I attended one of Free SC webinars by e-GMAT and found it quite good, I explored further and decided

to purchase their offering suite.

I read through the entire SC prep material and in conjunction with Manhattan SC book, this was the

boost I needed. After carefully completing the e-GMAT material and Manhattan SC prep book. My SC

accuracy went up to ~90% from 60-70% a week before.


Practice Concepts: Study and practice concepts from Manhattan SC and questions from OG13. I

typically would do set of 20 questions from QA, SC, CR or RC on rotation basis, allocating 30 min

irrespective of which section it is.

Maintain concept-log book: I religiously maintained a log book in which I included the key

concepts, error log, quality of questions-marking some very good questions in SC and shortcut

formulas for QA.

Use Mocks to build Stamina: I kept the weekends dedicated for test taking. I used them to build

stamina.

Quant: It may be helpful to look at some basic theories of trigonometry and solutions of triangles, they

save a lot of time and are not that complex to understand.

Focus: Instead of looking a multiple books and resources, it is much better to repeatedly do the same

book as doing so imprints much of the book in your mind

PRASHANT 760 (V41)

I fully attribute my success to the teachers at e-GMAT (Shraddha,

Payal, Rajat and Chiranjeev). The course gave me the right tools to

apply what I had learned.

Background:

I am an engineer turned business analyst by profession seeking to become a consultant. I took the

GMAT three times and scored 550, 600 (Q49, V23) and finally 760 (Q51, V41)

Overall, I put 250+ hours of effort in my prep the second time, did MGMAT books at least twice,

attended the prep course and completed 12 mock test, yet I was not confident. My mock scores,

even in MGMAT mocks were up to 710, with Verbal improving to 37, however I was never confident

about verbal.


My last leg of improvement came from the GMAT Verbal workshop conducted by e-GMAT. This is one

killer webinar that simulates the real test. Killer because it contains really good questions and they

give you really good feedback.

I scored 65 (70 percentile) in the workshop. What was shocking for me was that I needed to

improve further on SC (55 percent) and RC (63 percent). This is something that did not show up on

any of the mocks.


1. In SC, focus on meaning first and then move to POE. For most 700+ level questions, you

probably need to spend half the time in analyzing the original choice. Avoid rushing through

this step (trust me - you will have a tendency)

2. CR is all about conclusion. As questions get more challenging, the conclusion becomes all

the more twisted. Spend time on analyzing the conclusion and then the argument structure.

Use the ABCDE approach in rejecting the answer choices.

3. Good comprehension is the key to RC. I discovered something interesting about RC.

Passages from Humanities though difficult to read are easier to answer once you get

somewhat a hang of them. You need just two things in RC - good comprehension and a

systematic approach in Main point, Inference and detail questions.



ARUN GOENKA 760 (V41)

e-GMAT makes the verbal section much more logical and

understandable. This course removed much of guesswork that I earlier

used in this section.

Background

I started my GMAT preparation in last week of July 12, and targeted to take GMAT in first week of

October 12 with 2 months of preparation. Based on the result of diagnostic test and my experience

from previous incomplete GMAT preparation in 2008/2009, I was aware that I needed additional

help on verbal section. I have used Manhattan and Kaplan materials for verbal preparation in past

but these have not helped in improving my score beyond 36.


I learned about e-GMAT on GMAT Club and subscribed its online course. Within few weeks of

preparation with e-GMAT course, I started seeing improvement in my sentence correction accuracy

which increased steadily from 50% to 85+%. In addition, this course was also very helpful in CR and RC

sections.

I found the e-Gmat method of audio visual method with pre and post-tests after each concept much

more helpful than just reading MGMAT books. This course helped me in pushing my verbal score from

35 (mock) to 41.


Quant: If you are good / reasonably good at quant, then quickly review basic math from Manhattan

GMAT materials. To score higher beyond 47, use MGMAT Advanced Quant book to prepare.

Achieving higher accuracy is key to overall high score in verbal: I used e-GMAT online course

extensively for the verbal section. Given that 16-17 questions out of 41 questions in verbal section

are SC questions and there are limited rules that GMAT can test. I targeted for 100% accuracy in SC

to achieve higher score in this section; and e-GMAT was helpful in pushing towards that.

In addition to e-GMAT material, I used verbal prep material from gmat club verbal advantage

section to understand tougher concepts. This is compendium of related articles on tougher verbal

concepts.
