Lot: 36A NAPOLEONIC SABRE. A silver (unmarked) mounted 1796variant sword, with black and silver coloured metal furniture.The English blade is some 35" long and marked Woolley & Coon the backedge. The mounts are consistent with the Frenchstyle of the late 18thC. An old label on the scabbard states ; 'Itwa proffered up by Col Le Ferie, on the capture of the FrenchBarque Le Paris' in 1801. of Glasgow. On the barrel of 36.1/4" is Charles Ingram Glasgowand Improved Cast Steel, also proof marks, platinum touch-hole. The second similar percussion barrel some 36" long ismarked Whitworth Patent and numbered F447, no visible proofmarks.Estimate: £400.00 - £600.00

Lot: 68A JACOBS PERCUSSION CARBINE. A Jacobs double-barrelled percussion cavalry carbine, with coarse four-grooverifling. Brig General Jacobs was a man who ordered his double-barrel carbines at his own expense. These had to be made inEngland where he himself, changed design and calibres amongother amendments. He died shortly after raising Jacobs Riflesin 1858. These rifles could also fire explosive shells and blewup ammunition carts at long ranges. No markings are visible onthe rifle which has double 23. 1/2" barrels, sliding ramp sightand underslung steel ramrod. Measuring 39.5" overall lengthwith steel furniture, broad top rib and bayonet side fittingdevice. See IllustrationEstimate: £700.00 - £1,000.00

Lot: 69A PERCUSSION JACOBS RIFLE. A double-barrelled JacobsRifle with 24" barrels, coarse four groove rifling. Steel furniturewith no visible proof or makers marks, 40.1/4" overall length.Lacking both front and rear sights, fitted with steel underslungramrod, bayonet fitting mount to the side. Lot: 116A WAKASASHI. A Wakasashi with unsigned blade, withattractive 19thC mounts. The 10.13/4" length blade is fittedwith a silvered two part (niju-habaki) style habaki, with neko-gaki or cat scratches. The Tanto style blade has two mekugi-ana in the tang. The Saya is of black lacquered construction,with partial rib decoration, complete with a kuri-gata. The Fuchiand Kashira, also the Tsuba are of soft metal with giltdecoration. The Kashira is of horses and mounted Samurai, theFuchi again has warriors on it. The Tsuba is soft metal withwaves and swirl patterns, in gilt decoration (no seppu). TheMenuki appear to be a Cock Bird and Hen, on each side. SeeIllustrationEstimate: £400.00 - £600.00

Commander P A R Withers served orcommanded Corvettes and Destroyers including HMS Hotspur,Marne, Avonvale, Vivacious, Vale. Taking part in the Battle ofNarvik, with the group is a letter written by him to his motherafter being sunk in the Hotspur. An original Telegram fromFrance reporting his as safe 22/4/1940. An original familyphotograph/scrap album containing letters and newspapercuttings of Narvik etc, also two original photographs of PeterWithers in naval uniform. Notations, sketches and odes writtenby him and family members and friends. It was in this action hisCommanding Officer Bernard Warburton-Lee wasposthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. Having lead the HForce Destroyers into the harbour at Narvik where the German2nd Destroyer Flotilla were at anchor,(Hardy/Hotspur/Havoc/Hostile/Hunter) surprised the GermanDestroyers in the act of re-fuelling. It was after the initial attackHMS Hardy was run ashore and HMS Hunter sunk by atorpedo, after the successful attack. The remaining shipsincluding a badly damaged Hotspur, fought another runningbattle with the fresh German Destroyers on the way out of theFiord. HMS Hotspur suffered temporary loss of control due to

enemy shellfire, rammed the Hunter which was almost at astandstill. Her sister ships sailed back to lay a smokescreenand successfully got the ship away from the enemy Distinguished Service Cross LG 25/10/1941. The deatils ofaward are given dated 31/3/1942. For outstanding services inthe successful defence of the convoy against heavy andsustained air attack without the support of the fleet Cruisers andDestroyers. Signed Philip Vian Distinguished Service Order.The Honours and awards Committee has considered the claimsfor Officers & Men of certain units of the Mediterranean Fleet,for services in passing a convoy into Malta etc. Nearly 6000Officers and men took part in this action. The numbers of thoserecommended for Awards at first sight appears large, but inview of the large numbers of ships who were engaged in closeaction with the enemy that this is not really so etc A detachmentof the Mediterranean Fleet was escorting a convoy to Maltawhen on the 22nd of March it was attacked from the air and bysuperior enemy forces. The air attacks began about 9:40 andlasted till dusk. In the course of 28 attacks 4 aircraft weredestroyed and many damaged by the fire of convoy andescorting ships and no damage was suffered from theseattacks by any ship. Two attempts were made to cut off theconvoy, in the early afternoon by one 8" and three 6"Destroyers, and in the later afternoon by one Littorio classBattleship, two 8" Cruisers and three 6" Cruisers and oneunidentified ship. Both attacks were frustrated by vigorousoffensive action. The convoy was screened by smoke and theenemy attacked by gunfire and torpedoes. The Battleship wastorpedoed and hit by gunfire and set on fire, and two Cruiserswere damaged. The enemy was last seen in retreat at 7 pm.The convoy dispersed to Malta and the main escort returned toAlexandria. MID LG 1/6/1943. Commanding HMS Avon Vale.Operational Award. Convoy T.E.14 was heavily attacked bytorpedoe bombers on the 29th January 1943 in the course ofwhich attack HMS Avon Vale was torpedoed. The foremostmagazine exploded blowing off the forepart of the ship. AvonVale reached Bougie in tow of HMS Pentstemon and partiallyunder her own power at dawn on the 30/1/43. Lot: 411A CHINA 1842 MEDAL TO LT P De SAUSMAREZ RN. Animpressed China 1842 medal to * P De Sauamarez Lieut HMSBelleisle*. Lt Philip de Sausmarez of the famous Guernseyfamily of seafarers, was serving on the 74 gun ship HMSBelleisle, from the 20th November 1841 onwards. HMSBelleisle sailed up the Yangtse river to for the Treaty Signing atNanking. Born C1810 in Guernsey , marrying Jane MariaBarlow in 1840. He entered the R Navy as a 1st ClassVolunteer in 1823, serving on HMS Revenge under the flag ofSir Henry Neal CinC Med Fleet. He stayed on the ship until1827, he served on HMS Sparrowhawk and HMS Algerinefighting Greek Pirates. After service at Plymouth andPortsmouth he served again in the Med under Captain Lyons ofthe 46 gun HMS Blonde. taking part with the French in thereduction of Morea Castle, the last stronghold of the Turks inthe Peloponnese. He was promoted Lt in 1831 and appointedto HMS Pelorous of 18 guns, serving off the coast of Africa. By1834 he was serving on the 120 Gun HMS Caledonia, Flagshipof Sir Josias Rowley, again in the Med. he was paid off after theWar of Succession in November 1836. After 5 years of HalfPay he was appointed to the Troopship HMS Belleisle, servingin the China War of 1842. In 1853 he was appointed to theCoastguard at Berwick and advanced to Commander in July1845. serving at different bases until 1858 within the CG. In

1860 he took command of the two gun Steamer HMS Dasher,establishing a Naval School on Jersey, which closed in 1869.Subsequently becoming Superintendent at Greenwich, heretired to Guernsey with his wife. Both were alive in 1881, livingat Oak Trees, Les Gravees, St Peter Port. Commander deSausmarez while a young officer was involved in many actionsagainst the slavers. On the 20th March 1832 HMS Peloruscaptured a Spanish Slave Ship (Segunda Teresa of 170 Tons)packed with 460 malnourished slaves on board. He wasordered to sail the vessel to Sierra Leone, keeping his prizecrew of a Sub Lt with 10 hands also the few remaining originalcrew members in order. Theft was rampant and the drone ofthe packed humanity, combined with thirst made it difficult. Afterstringing up one slave for an hour with his stolen meat joint, thepoor slaves then behaved. In his report he states that thedevious Spanish Captain tried to poison the prize crew withBluestone in their rum. Sgt Edward William Godfray eldest son of Mrs BGodfray, of 2 Lafone Avenue, Feltham , has been seriouslywounded and is now in Hospital. Aged 26 and educated atQueens Rd School, was keenly interested in Sport and theScout Movement. (He was a very good boxer). Whilst living atAldershot the family became very friendly with Sgt A C Hulme(NZ) who won the Victoria Cross at Crete, he became theGodfather of Sgt Godfray's son. Though aware thatan enemy force was approaching his isolated position, heremained at his post until the enemy arrived. He then sent backinformation of the fact by runner and hid himself for three days,until the enemy cleared away. He at once resumed his post andinformed Headquarters. By his initiative and determination, heobtained much valuable information. A more informative

narrative of events, appeared in the East Kent Times upon hisretirement. An original clipping with a photograph, is with themedals. 'Goodbye to Railway'. Ramsgate Railway Stationforeman 65 yr old Mr Charles Goldsmith of 33 Ashburnham Rd,Ramsgate, retired on Wednesday. He started his career in theRailway service in 1919. Few men can have led such a full lifeas Mr Goldsmith. He joined the South Lancashire Regt in 1908and after a two year spell in Ireland, went to India in 1910.When war broke out in 1914 he was serving on the North WestFrontier. From there he went to Karachi and was then loaned tothe Navy as a signaller. He helped to chase Gun Runners in thePersian Gulf. In 1915 he was posted to German East Africa, inZ Division Signals Corps, and it was during this campaign hewon the DCM and was mentioned three times in dispatches. Heended up in the Kings African Rifles as a Sgt Major. Afterpersuasion Mr Goldsmith modestly told the story of his DCM.He was a Sgt in charge of a small fort, and had under 3 whitemen and ten Indians. They were signallers not a fighting force,and had about 8 rifles between them. The Fort was surroundedby 200 Germans, but they held out for two days and threenights until the Germans withdrew. During this time MrGoldsmith kept in contact with British troops, who were 85 milesaway by Heliograph. After leaving the Army at the end of thewar, he became a Railway Guard at Ashford, leaving to take upthe position of Station Foreman at Minster in 1939. He stayedat Minster until 1948, when he became Area Freight Inspectorfor East Kent. In 1952 he started as Foreman at Ramsgatewhere one of his main jobs was the supervision of carriagecleaning. A married man Mr Goldsmith has two sons, intendingto do gardening when he retires. Ultimately he becametreasurer of the Railway Workers Union. See IllustrationEstimate: £4,000.00 - £5,000.00
