Born 8th January 1913Emmett of Anglo-Indian descent was educatedat St. Georges College, Mussoorie, India. Atschool he was a talented hockey player andplayed in the forward position as a left/rightwinger alongside Major Dhyan Chand (1905-79,) the legendary Indian “wizard” of fieldhockey. At the age of 23 Emmett was selectedas part of the 22 man team for the 1936 BerlinOlympic Games.The Berlin Olympics were held 1-16th August1916, The Indian team (pre independant BritishIndia) competed under the captaincy of MajorChand and won the Gold medal in style,defeating Germany in the final 8-1.Emmett played one game against U.S.A. thuscontributing to the history created by theIndian Hockey team of 1936.Emmett was a military medical student andattended the Medical College, Kolkata (knownas the Medical College, Bengal.) He obtainedthe MMF (Member of the Medical Faculty) andthe MB degree.He served in the Indian Army Medical Corps inthe military hospitals. In 1945 he was awardedthe M.B.E. when in the rank of TemporaryMajor, he was later promoted to Lieut’ Coloneland awarded the Military Cross, he laterworked as a general physician in the teaplantations of Assam.Emmett was a versatile man and held a licenceto shoot rogue tigers and elephants.
