In November 1900 Lord Roberts issued anorder empowering Major Laing to raise a fightingregiment 570 strong, with 2 guns, 2 pom-pomsand 2 machine guns to be called “The Bodyguard”.So great was Laings popularity that almostimmediately he got over 1000 recruits. The corpstook to the field in Orange River Colony, unfortuneatly the first reference to them in adispatch was in connection with a grevious mishapwhich took place on the 3rd January 1901.In histelegram of 6th January Lord Kitchener said “fromreports of some of the wounded who havearrived at Heilbron, it appears that a detachmentof Bodyguard 120 strong of General Knox’s forcecame into contact with a superior number ofenemy near Lindley. I regret to say that Laing, 2officers and 15 men were killed with 2 officersand 20 men wounded. No details have beenreceived from General Knox of this action.”

228A cased pair of 19th century travelling pistols, each having 6.5cm octagonal turn-off steel barrelsengraved at the muzzle and with proof marks tothe underside, the frame engraved with stands ofarms and signed Mabson & Labron, having slidingsafety catches and foliate engraved trigger guards, the chequered walnut bag shaped butts withwhite metal escutcheons and lion mask caps,18.5cm, housed in a green baize lined mahoganycase with accessories to include 16 Bare tool, barrel spanner, bullet mould, spare flints andcopper flask etc. case dimensions w.25.5, d.20,h.6.5cm.£2,500-3,000

The partnership of Birmingham gun makers(John) Mabson & (James Augustus) Labron wasborn out of an earlier company which alsoincluded John Dunderdale and was registered at25 Russell Street, Birmingham.  This appears tobe a family firm as the same three surnamescrop up in the family tree; with James AugustusLabron, son of James Labron and MaryDunderdale, marrying Elizabeth Mabson in1812.  Deeds held by Birmingham Archive showthat the three men formed a co-partnership in1808, which was dissolved on Dunderdale’sdeath in 1822, with Mabson & Labroncontinuing the business until a William Mabsonmade another third.  The company of thissecond trio was dissolved in 1834, therefore itis probable that these guns date from the1820s, prior to William Mabson joining. It is unlikely that these pistols are post1834, as the flintlock pistol was mostlysuperseded by the percussion cap bythat time.

Birmingham in the late 18th & early19th century was known as the ‘Toyshopof Europe’ (‘toys’ referring to metalworktrinkets such as snuff-boxes, shoebuckles, corkscrews and the like, asopposed to children’s playthings), andDunderdale & Mabson had previouslybeen in business with a JamesHumphreys as ‘gilt toy makers’ until thedissolution of this company in 1806.They took their metalwork expertiseinto gun making and establishedDunderdale, Mabson & Labron in 1807,registering the deed the following year.

It was a shrewd move.  TheNapoleonic Wars were raging at the timeand required a monumental scale of gunproduction; with almost two millionmuskets, rifles, carbines, and pistols beingmanufactured for the Government alonebetween 1804 and1817.   Approximately two-thirds of thisproduction was carried out inBirmingham, where a thriving gun

quarter encompassedhundreds of manufacturers -125 in 1815 rapidly rising to455 by 1829.   TheBirmingham Gun Barrel ProofHouse was built in 1813 andwas managed by aconsortium of gun traderswho ensured the safety oftheir wares; the only otherproof house in England at thetime was in London, demonstrating theimportance and prosperity ofthe town’s industry.   TheBirmingham Proof House isstill in operation today.

These pistols would havebeen manufactured forpersonal use, and probablyself-defence againsthighwaymen and footpadswhile travelling.  Theydemonstrate a high level ofcraftmanship and arebeautifully decorated, and acased pair such as this withall the accessories wouldhave been an extremelyexpensive investment for agentleman.
