Friendly and professional atmosphere. Research culture at Oulu and opportunities toassociate freely with staff and attendees. An extremely enjoyable and well organised conference, enjoyed the homemade and genial feel. Exterminate all mosquitos :D Should have a visit to the main campus to see what local researchers are doing.More detailed information about what will be done in workshops. External facilitators who aren't experts oracademics for workshopsTransportation for international students to events.TransportationOne cannot control the weather so it's hard to think anything to improve. Perhaps give students someinformation of good places where to buy lunch during the workshop. Also, it would be good to point out thenearest convenience of the camp site.Minor issues here and there: check the categories.More detailed information on workshops before commitment.30-sec-madness was announced only on short-notice.info about the exam could have been given prior to the summer school's startKick off seminar was too long without a real coffee breakIf I have to write down anything here, I would scrap the Potnapekka trip and replace it by some other way ofgetting to know Oulu. E.g. with the weather we had we could have easily done something similar on foot.Social aspects (inter-workshop mingling), Refreshments (coffee/tea, water)- transportation issues (a near place to the school would be better)- internet connection for surefood cost is very high ... :(NA1. Too long lecture hours2. Transportation during the rain - taking a taxi may not be feasible if it happens oftenAbility to rent roller skates although this would have to be weighed up against drunken accidents on rollerskates. Sad to have the school dinner a day before the final presentation so some people didnt attend.Mosquitos? ;) There could have been a breakfast solution the first day, because many students I talked with hadn't yet boughtbreakfast food and the theatre had no cafeteria. Nallikari camping was nice, but the lack of wifi (and hair dryer, although you fixed that - thank you!) wasproblematic. Some WiFi problems in the 1st and 2nd day @ Nallikari, the cloudly weather :)provide some water during the seminar, level of the workshop may be higher. some of us found that we would have learned more in another workshop. the thing is, that most people choosea workshop that is related to their expertise and they don't learn too much there. maybe you shouldn't put thestudents in their preferred workshop for their own good ;) it would also be nice to learn some Finish at the beginning of the week. i personally thought the sight seeing tour with the potnapekka was somewhat boring. but maybe it was just thetour guide.

city tour was a bit boring, maybe a bicycle city tour insteadnothing to improveA trombinoscope with everyone...Too difficult to remember all names !-Pre-arrangements of rental bikes. It took three days to reach an employee at the camping that knew about thespecial price for the attendees.the mosquito spray... I was skeptical about the motivations of the professors running my workshop (I think this was NOT the samewith the other workshops). It felt like the workshop was centred around a paper that they are writing, rather thandesigned purely for the students - it may be a cynical opinion, but that is the opinion I have. Despite this cynicism, I entirely enjoyed the week - it was the best experience I've had in all of my life for a longtime, and also the best experience I've had in my academic life.- the schedule of the summer school came out too late- probably suggest where to have lunch- a lit early lunch time 12 instead of 13Since we had to work on our project sometimes until midnight, we had problem with building access controlsystem.Distribution of workload, many missed some dinners and social program because of evening work (differentevenings in different workshops). One very valuable outcome of summerschools is extending student'snetworks in these social events, both self organized and the ones in official program. Networking acrossworkshops was a bit difficult due to differently distributed workload/schedule. Some needed to work theevenings in the beginning of the week and some at the end.Honestly can't think of anything!the material and theories that have been taught in the workshop:90% of it was familiar to me, not anything new I could have taken out of it. If my group and now thecollaboration afterwards would not have happened, the workshop would have been not very useful for me.SchedulingI thought the teaching was a little dispassionate at points and there was little acknowledgment of real contextand potential to take project forward. Live briefs would have made this an exciting prospect indeed. Proper facilitation and live stakes to drive competition, perhaps a sandbox model would work well. Deep divetechniques could be employed to drive the process forward. More continuous feedback is required to fosterproper engagement with programs. Felt as though the teaching team was only marginally aware they hadpeople working very hard to develop meaningful outputs. Perhaps a pecha kucha or short collaborative activities to share ideas and foster collaboration. A clearer meansof establishing or maintaining or following up on legacy of conference. The workshops on their own remainedfairly inert collaboration between purely technical and design thinking teams could have resulted in the realfruition of projects. Had realisation and production been tied together the school could provide Oulu with lastingbenefit or productive spinout. A week is a small time but it is astounding what was produced in such short order by the enormously talentedcohort why not harness this. Subsidised bike hire. Block booking to achieve lower price per hire. Camp to town commute would have beenmade quicker.encourage more mingling between workshop groupsinternal group dynamics

Transportation/logistic. Could use a bit more time - the whole workshop feels very cramped.Better internet connection for the cottage.More information in advance would be helpful - didn't get the information until the week before the workshop - alot of us have to make plans ahead of time and it would be helpful if we were given more information inadvance.Dark lecture theatre - not great for the first dayget more time to do the assignments in the workshop hours"the last dinner" could have been on Saturday and not on Friday so that all people would have had time to joinToo long days. Timing wasn't perfect (f.ex everyone did not have posssibility to come for dinner)Workshop was not perfectly planned. There was too much work for just 4 days.I suggest add a conversatory about the research trends of Ubicomp.

Nice overview of what to come. Nice talks from the organizers.Every presentation was good. Especially, I liked to listen what Malcolm McCullough had in his mind.Nice to listen what real experts say. => Please, keep it so that there are 'older', really experienced guys/galsspeaking.PlaceInteresting talksGood choice of place, interesting talks.Well organized and timely.different topicscould see all the instructorsMalcolm's presentation was great!Panel discussion.timing was good. not too long not too shortSpeech by individual professors

To get an overview of the different workshops.Albrecht and Timppa's presentation (1st half)Really interesting debate. Made me want to do some of the other workshops as well.Good overview over the four workshopsInteresting talks all around.I liked the explanation for each workshop, really interesting knowing the others' programs.the talksinspiring talkswell-known participantsThe presentations themselves.it was interesting to get to know little bit about the thoughts of the instructors -good introduction to the wholeSummer SchoolThe length of the presentations.n/a- Different presentation from the instructorsA short introduction of each workshop was really nice. Also I liked the warm welcome by Timpa.Good overview of everything (all the workshop topics and UBI Oulu in general). The discussion, and the individual presentations being short as well as catered to an audience from variousdisciplinary backgroundsgood to get to know all the profs and to see what is their research aboutInstructorspanelindividual representations of the workshop leadersSolid overview of the various workshops, and it really sets the tone for the summer school. The paneldiscussion was interesting as well as informative.the discussion panelIt was good to see everybody together and hear the topicsWell organized timing. Nice speakers. Interesting subjectsPresenters represented many different fieldsInteresting talks and questions

6. TO IMPROVENumber of respondents: 32

No refreshments.Tea & coffee would be great. There should be a coffee breakNot really engagingThe content of Q&A could have been better somehow.Perhaps more round-table discussion rather than presentations (though presentation material very useful asbackdrop)the talks were a bit boring.most talks touched the topics on a very general level only, without going into depth. i didn't really learn a lotfrom that.Max 2 hours without a coffee break please!Overall focus of the session was a bit of a muddleSome of the presentations were not good enough quality or suitable for a different audience.Questions in the panel session were poor.Provide coffee, I wouldn't mind paying.Coffee break needed!there were no drinks served/sold in the morning

NAMaybe the panel discussion can be fired up a bit by internal discussions among the speakers? It was hard forthe audience to come up with good questions in such short time.Stop people making long rambling and self - advertising questions. It was a bit long, the room was quite dark, and the presentations a little bit too long.Plan could have included a slightly longer coffee break (as refreshments weren't in-house).Nothing.provide some water. i didn't bring any and could not find out where to get drinks. wearable microphones, so the speakers do not have to carry them and the volume is the same for all speakers the q&a session was a little boring this time - but that's not your fault. i just thought the questions did not refer tothe talks...maybe a more specific topic for the panel discussionweak discussionAt least an easy way to get coffee/tea/snacks (like a vending machine for example)maybe there could have been a place next to the Small Stage, where people could have got/bought drinksduring the breakCoffee breaks! Especially the first morning coffee was highly needed. Coffee breaks are also a great option totalk to people. The discussion session was not that interesting. Perhaps an option to send questions in advance could helpgetting more interesting and relevant questions.n/aIf we could have coffee it was better.Coffee break?panel discussion was really poorHard to kick-start the first day of the summer school sitting in a pitch black lecture theatre. It would have been better to have an ice-breaker activity to get to know fellow summer students and theorganizing committee and other workshop instructors. Some provision of refreshment would also be nice.more technical mattersThe session was quite long, and at least I could not assimilate everythingCoffee break would be goodA coffee break would be niceThere wasn't a common theme to explore

Food, atmosphere, olympic games.I didn't attendIt was nice to just chat with people.Place was great, mosquitoes not so :) But repellent was a good idea. I didn't stay long but I think it's a goodidea to arrange something like this, to break the ice.Finnish atmosphereSushiFood was good and 30sec madness was fun30 second madness was a really good idea, and the presentations were interesting. Beer was aplenty.i liked the finish olympics (although I expected that it would be boring...). but finally it was fun. was also nice to see every participant at least once.Great!Great combination of informal activities to get to know each other.Saunaeverythingthe beer.Fun timeThe Madness. The team spiritFree beer and pizza.Pizza, beer, weather, other people! Great place! The half minute talks were nice.Really good experience, my first madness presentation, that is a good idea to break the ice. Also I liked all the games organized.Well done.free drinks and food, the madness was fun, summer olympicsmadnesslocationThe whole evening.

Chance to get familiar with people attending the Summer School straight awayThe sauna!finnish beerStaying up late... partying.the presentation was really funthe "olympic game" was also goodThe olympic was really enjoyable.Very well organized, nice that it was in the first evening to also kick start social stuff and networking.well organized! Love the 30 sec presentations!Getting to chat with peoplePossibility to contact other students and instructors30seconds madnessmadness, sauna30 secs presentationsA chance to get to know the people. Relaxing atmosphere, fun activities, and the 30 second madness was agood way to learn about others. The sauna was a nice addition/introduction to Finnish culture.gamesthe food, the drinks, the madness show, nice surroundings!People really get to know each others. Games were niceGood activities and nice locationIntegration and new relationships. Attend the presentation the participants in UBI Summer School.

9. TO IMPROVENumber of respondents: 33

Mosquitos, animation.TransportationCant think of anything..Get rid of the ball game - the ridiculous difficulty won't amuse for long. Waste of time. The boot throwing seemsrather dangerous for the audience. Professor-only sauna does not fit Finnish culture (everybody is equal insauna)we were late with the train bus - so the pizzas were already cold. It's a pity the pizzas got cold that fast. Perhaps order them in batches?Madness presentation (what is the point of having this strange "madness" presentation?)not enough vegetarian food unfortunately. For some reason the olympics lacked enthusiasm. There were long waiting times and somehow there was nocheering or teasing for other teams.Maybe one score keeper per group and pairwise competing helps? The screen for the slides was rather tiny and low-contrast for such a big crowd. No pizza pleaseFinnish Olympics were a bit lame. 5-a-side football might be better.Personally I didn't like the disciplines in the Finnish Olympic games, because there was only one personinvolved at a time. We were waiting almost all the time. Some more alternatives than pizza? If you're trying to be healthy, it's not the best food. The mosquitos. Too much.i bet that if you buy 50% vegetarian pizza, the meat-eaters will not say "no" to that either.the holes of the tennis ball board should have at least the diameter of a tennis ball! ;-)some more games would be good, and more interaction between the groupsMadness presentations....It is difficult to have interests since we don't know people yet.. Then we we had to ask again...

-the pizzas weren't that delicious even though i usually like pizza-30 second madness was nice idea but it still took quite long time to go through everyone's presentationsThe madness session was a bit too much. It was missing a clear objective, and it's impossible to remember somany presentations. Perhaps holding a madness session on a workshop basis would make these sessionsmore relevant otherwise this is something that easily could be dropped. Potentially getting some English board games etc. could make it easier to get in contact with other attendees.Mosquito problems? :) I enjoyed the 30-seconds of madness, although.... I felt there could be some improvement there. Maybe anapplication so the students could vote for the most memorable rather than the 'judging panel' ..? Or have somealternative prizes for presentations with different qualities..?The guide in the train was really boringThe 30 second madness presentation could be one minute since 30 seconds is really short time.put a net over the whole place, to abandon the mosquitosThe presentations were fun but the room made them a little difficult to hear/see from the back. Not that much ofa problem though, could just move forward. Maybe leave some of the tables and chairs in the room, to one sideso some people can sit down and get out of the way while still leaving standing space?Nothingalternative to pizzapizza? games? not everyone's cup of tea...I would have happily skipped the train ride prior to the party. It was rather slow-going and the guide's commandof English was questionable. Many of us struggle to stay awake and maintain interest. As a result, it somewhatdampened the mood to the party. The party itself is fun. It would have been better to have some traditionalFinnish food instead of pizza. I am also thinking about the presentation format for the 30-second madness. Maybe in stead of restricting it tojust a power-point slide or two, how about letting the participant to decide what they want to do, with or withoutvisual.hotter pizzasjoin a mad with a more serious self presentation-Pizzas were not very delicious* Give a few break before attend the party, for go to "Camping Nallikari" for change clothes. * Suggest to student that is important, mention a main ideas about the research doctoral in the presentation of30 sec.

Close up and personal atmosphere where you have nowhere to run.Good to be on the river and nice to talk to other people attending workshop.food was goodThe length was perfect - not too long. Excellent! The vieweverythingthe fishing even there was no fishThe consensus to go to a bar together as a group afterwards.PerfectGreat to get to know everyone further.PerfectLiked to see the river. Nice that the Oulu students guided the rest to and from the boat. The dinner was very nice..good wine, wonderful salmon.I liked the people happiness and the want to talk with everyone.everythingrainbow, cruise, dinnernice view, excellent foodchance to view Oulu from the river - not just from the banks like usuallySailing! The whole idea of having a dinner cruise. The fish was great, not the caught fish but the cooked one :)In my opinion the dinner cruise was at least as important as the get together party as we already knew eachother and we started talking/sharing ideas right away. The bottles of wine were important also...

Food is subpar and in low quantity-Didn't attend due to illnessFood.Sauce for the fish was fantastic and fish just fine. Otherwise the food was quite bland. But I understand that ona boat, with budget, it's not possible to have anything really fancy. To far from city centre, no transportation.Crowded space gets really loud easily. Also, could anything be done with the ridiculously expensive (bottled)beer?Quite crowded - but not a lot you can do about that. It was okay though.should not be called "cruise" as this leads to higher expectations by the students. it was a short "boat trip" orsomething like that. it could have been better organised how to go there. i walked there with one of the student guides. but it took uslonger than expected and we almost went a wrong way.The food (actually it is good not to have fancy stuff if the summer school is cheaper)i want more rainbows for the next time :p-Beer was a bit pricey. Not enough wine ;-)The dessert, too "commercial". Maybe could be better some local dessert.time flew by too fast ;)maybe a shuttle from city to boat (more time to work on projects)more wine :)The transport to the boat... quite a longer distance than expected... But I should have taken my bike insead offollowing walking people !-The food was OK, but it should be served to at least all people at a table at the same time. One personreceived his food almost 30 min before the rest of the table.

The food was average, but this didn't make my experience any worse.food was not enough. I was still hungry.Quality of food could be improved. The space was very reduceFood wasn't amazing but was palatable and pretty good. Perhaps more cheap drink (not just alcoholic) couldhave been provided.actually catch some fish ;)Felt a bit unnecessary, the food was poor and getting there was a little disorganized.Would be helpful to have transportation to and from the cruise. Some music/forms of entertainment would be nice.closer to the campingPlease take into account special diets betterFood was somewhat boring (salmon was fine but the starter could have been better)

Steaks were dry and with too much pepper.Didn't attendFoodNext time if it is not possible to use the school dinner venue on Saturday night, maybe another place should bechosen. It affected to the atmosphere a bit when people where still working on their presentationsBad timing! Cannot both party freely and concentrate fully on the presentation + exam on next day. Thereasons for the arrangement are understandable though.would be good, trying to get the school dinner to saturday again - before the presentations I didn't like to partytil the morning hours...Must be after the examination!Pancakes for everyone! dinner room is not the nicest.the food was very average ...Maybe a bit more animation (music flopped and no other activities available) to keep more people until a certaintime and in turn transfer the hard core towards downtown before a certain time.-Many people were still workin gon their presentationAs you already knew, Friday was a bit unlucky since people were working.Nothing.I prefer school dinner on saturday!do it after the exam and final presentations-schedule of the week didn't work the best possible way since no one in our workshop got out on Friday at 5pm.we worked until 11pm. --> make sure schedule works or move School Dinner back to Saturday (better idea)Make sure to announce when the pancakes are ready, also for the people in the sauna :-)... the issue with the wedding causing it to be on the Friday rather than Saturday wasn't ideal, but I lovedeverything about it in any case.It should be on the last day!We needed a DJ for music and dance part. Also if the party was after the final presentation and exam it wasmuch better. Many people had to work, but this was the case in all the parties. Not to do it the night before the presentationsThis unfortunately resulted in many people being tired the following day and the energy levels were low.(obvious thing was that it was the day before the exam! - why did it have to be held at the same place?)The food - very tough chewy beefTiming - most of us were still working on the final presentations, so it was a bit of a balancing act, togglingbetween working on laptops and hanging out with friends.food quality- the time of the eventTiming was not perfect. Everyone were not able to come because of group work.Again, special diets were not taken into account properly. I didn't get a main course at all. Music was not toogood. The place of the party was a bit shabby.

Too long. Maybe break it down? The presentations were quite hard and tiring to follow (also boring), I didn't see the texts in the back (maybe toosmall font). Coffee would have been great in-between sessions, cafeteria open or provided by the summerschool.one more break between sessions or a bit longer break!Lack of energy due to the school dinner. Next to no feedback on the presentations.coffee break after each workshopAs usual, coffee. ;p- drinks, we were thirsty after a point.longer break between the sessions...The handovers between sub-groups were quite tedious, but still to short for service breaks (people in the rowsof fixed seats were quite blocked in).Could be optimized by collecting the slides on one laptop and a good seating order.More breaks pleaseBit long should have been dinner break or breakfast available, I was starving and hungover.Too long, room too dark (we were used to all the light), and people were tired and exhausted from partying. Next time: time restrictionMaybe, after the session could be nice a "all together party".maybe it would be nice to have 2 breakstight schedule - no idea how to improve thisnothing to improveWe were warned: it was after the friday's party...Everyone was so tired on Saturday so not that much energy left to get interested and listen to students'presentations. Maybe shorter result session would have worked better if more info could be find from internet? (gather results there??)Coffee breaks are needed! Four hours in a row is a very long time to keep concentrated. Demos can be hard toshow in a presentation. Perhaps combining with a demo session afterwards could help, like demo sessionsseen at conferences.Having a big hangover was difficult (for everybody)... Apart from that, I'm not sure, but something could be improved here.presentations were a bit too quick. There could be some kind of exhibition that we can walkthorugh.where are the videos now from them? I would like to see themWe were in a hurry!! A bit tiring (too many presentations)Lack of feedback and outward facing follow up.The whole seminar could have more comfort breakswould have been nice to have a break inbetween workshop A,B,C,D - also to allow time for discussion of ideaQA session. In general there was very little feedback on individual projects, no time for critique which is usuallyan integral part of any design project.enforce time limits on presentationsMaybe allowing teams to present it differently - not just on video/power point. Could think of more creative waysto present.

Visit to main campus. Train guide was bad. This was canceled because of the weather I think? BBQ on Saturday was fun though!Didn't both get cancelled? It's a pity, but totally understandable given the weather conditions. Perhaps providean indoor backup? E.g. pool/fussball competition?Book a sauna at the camping, maybe?the bbq party had no beef/chicken meat. i don't eat pork, so i could only had some chips and an apple.Could be anything else as wellBit more real food to eat than just sausage and snacks.maybe give some additional suggestions on possible activities (e.g. hiking, soccer, ...) and where to do themnothing to improve-perhaps on rainy days there could be a board game evening (if a place can be found)The location and time was not clear so took a while for people to find.No badBut couldn't attend much due to tasks in the workshops.what was that?More integration with days activities, team structure was divisive rather than encouraging further mixing andcollaboration between workshops.organize something in downtown in the evening

22. FREE-FORM FEEDBACK TO ORGANIZERSNumber of respondents: 34

The feel of the summer school felt very much aimed towards under graduates rather than post.I hoped that the workshops would be open to all kinds of people with different backgrounds. I got an impressionwhen I applied to the summer school that with no coding experience it was possible to attend only to workshopsA and D. But I think it would be quite beneficial also for workshops B and C to get more user researchers intheir workshops. This was just an idea, you can decide what you want to do in the next summer school. With only 170 (??) euros this was really great! Very nice supervisors/teachers, and all the practical thingsworked very well. Very well planned.Workshop was a good place to meet a lot of new people. The thing is, that when you meet so many people, itcan be difficult to remember all the names and faces. Now we had the list of names and email addresses of everyone who participated. But it can be difficult toremember who was who if people want to connect after the event. So maybe it would be a good idea to guideeveryone to join for the Facebook group or instruct them to tag themselves to a group photo or something.Keep up with the good worktimpa is the best! One of the best organized events I have ever attended! Thanks a lot for a great week! The organization was excellent. I wish if it was held for 2 weeks time, may be the learning is vast.I stayed for almost a week, but don't think it was necessary to stat that long. The lecture times should shortenedand the end product should be stated more early in the process.Had a great week. Thank you for organising.Great organization! Incredible, how much Timppa is devoted to organizing this summer school. This includes somany things, including providing drinks and foot at so many occations (workshops, in the evenings, ...)Thank you for a lovely experience!

All in all, I was very happy with it =)Well done Oulu University, this week was a really nice experience, meeting new friend, the city and the finnishstyle.it was amazing! thanks for everythingthank you!excellent summer schoolNice job !Thanks for the great Summer School!Overall this was a great and very well organised workshop. The physical environment for workshop C was notthe best in a very outdated classroom.I don't want to be flattering. Everything was so well organized. There's nothing to complain about. Well, theWiFi signal in the cottage was rather bad nevertheless I would blame the whole bunch of trees for that.Of course I felt sorry we didn't go fishing but again I cannot expect the organizers to straighten up the weather...:)All in all this was the most well-organized summer school I've ever attended.Thank you, to all the organisers. Timo, Simo, et al. I did have an issue with my particular workshop, not with the personalities, but with my perceived motivation ofthe workshop-leaders. Overall... an almost perfect experience.Just keep it up and good luck.Thank you! Best summer school so far!Timo incredible job! I hope to attend it once again your summer school, so keep on doing this great job!THX a lot for it!Well done!! I learned SO much and had tons of fun at the same time, with no hitches anywhere. That's goodorganising!Make the projects live. Focus on facilitation of working practices and collaboration. More engaged andpassionate teaching, sense of achievement and fostering collaboration between creative and technical teams.exemplary organization, greatest times, thanks!Overall, the social programs were diverse, fun, and full of energy. I felt that the organizers really went out oftheir ways to try to ensure a positive summer school experience and balancing learning with social events.everything seemed perfect to me and most important very well organized.Very nice course even for a first-timer!Thank you, memorable summer schoolOne of the best experiences so far in my PhD studies - very well organized and with lots of outcomeCongratulation for excellent job!!!Thank so much.

Everything - it was an excellent week. The split between lectures & project work was perfect. The pace was high at times, but Mark always found time for unhurried discussion.A very good reading packet, interesting platform including.Hands-on experience with new technology, a lot of equipment, great supervision.Building a prototypeTeaching style.Teaching/interaction by the professor, Google glass :)The interdisciplinary, think-tank-like work.- self-actualization of students.- working with friends from different disciplines.- thinking in a different way was quite interesting and challenging for me.- on tuesday, we were expected to consider urbanism and urban computing with a historical manner. we werewanted to find some representatives of urbanism from history.- on wednesday, we are wanted to find some existing projects for megacities and urban resources.- these two days were helpful to understand the idea of the workshop. however, these studies would be nice ifthey were connected with the project development phase.- Malcolm is a special person. i liked his ideas, his way of thinking, his visualization very much. i got someseveral perspectives from him for my further studies. The solid hand on experienceVery interesting lectures, new technology to see was great.Different from my typical working style Theater warm-ups Each day I understood a bit more what the workshop was all about - good job!Very good teachers.Group members.Learned a lot.The patience and the teaching skills of Mark. In 3 days he told us many important case of study, problems totake in account working in this field, furthermore he suggest us different point of view during the projectdevelopment.Great speaker.being divided into random groups, the hands-on approachtopic: AR + Google Glassproject resultscool ideasGoogle GlassLectures and practical parts.working together with all the nice people in the workshopVery knowledgeable professor that had organised the week well and made a workshop program that wasrealistic for the limited time.We could test Google Glass which was great.I really enjoyed Mark's presentations. He had many interesting videos which I couldn't find on the internet. Icould see new ideas related to AR. The history of AR was also interesting as we could track the changes andimprovements of AR technologies over time.Seeing other AR related projects and their status was also important to me.The amazing attendees. The friendly atmosphere. The friendly professors.Hand-on worksThe lecturer was one of the best in the field of AR and The quality of lectures was really good.

Learned a lot, lectures were really good.it was fun, but thats itThe teaching/leading of the workshop - Malcolm was able to push us into new directions and at the same timeteach procedures which are applicable to all kinds of design projects as well as presentations. Also, the gameswe played at beginning and end - they really helped set the mood and get to know each other! The wholeworkshop was like being on an adventure, not knowing where we would end up each day, but having fun andlearning all the way there.InstructorsTopicActivities carried outWell organised and pertinent content, team split nicely to push people out of their comfort zone. Well organisedand well scheduled.I did enjoy the teacherTinkering with Google GlassGreat instructors, wonderful group of people to interact with, diversity of tasks to do, hands-on approach, andflexibility and creativity that were allowed throughout the week. We had the most fun brainstorming, designing, testing and refining prototypes. The quality of the products are superb and I am impressed with my fellowstudents' ideas. It was pure magic that we all got on so well.seriousness and competence of professorprodding to work and to make something at the end of the workshopthe quick dive into the real hands on sessions and the approach of the instructor covering a broad range oftopics in spite of the time constraints.the teacher, the atmosphere, the topicsWhen the projects were done. It was nice to see what we all have done.Nice topic, good platform (Gedgeteer) very well organized

Ordering of some of the activities should be revised, for instance the plex cards should appear sooner andmore emphasis.Did not like being put with random people - there was not the support needed by lecturers to provide anenvironment in which creativity could happen and risks could be taken. The feel was very under graduate- therewas no challenge in terms of ideas- it was very didactic and prescriptive. It also felt as though everything wasbeing designed just for the sake of it. No in depth information relating to ubiquitous computing in the urbanenvironment- which I felt was misleadingNo time to discuss with the supervisors, would have been great to get more feedback from them and also justhear them talking also other than 'teaching', maybe telling about their own experiences etc.Bit more continuous feedbackEvaluation lecture was too basicSometimes it was difficult to get all the home assignments done.Slightly rushed in end with the video editing - but possibly this will always be the case whatever the time limits! The Junaio API had bugs and unexpected limitations.i would have liked to get more ("better") information concerning the evaluation. we discussed some methods.but it seemed that any of the presented methods is not really a good one in practice, as the restraints weremore discussed/mentioned than the advantages.NothingJust a little bit more time to finish the project. It might have been intentional though.Perhaps a bit too many lectures where hacking around a bit longer would have been welcome.Inform before the workshop, exactly what software installation is needed - for some, the whole Monday waswasted because of that. Maybe also try some installations in virtual machines in order to be able to providehelp.

Lectures where a good introduction into all topics, but probably unnecessary for most students (anyway, I likedthem). They took time we would have liked to spend on the prototype.I am not a friend of work overload as a teaching method. its not nice when a group can't attent the dinner, because of this preassure generating method.NAThe take aways were a bit too fuzzy for this limited time.- no schedule was given beforehand, the synopsis was not clear at all. the other workshops had at least anexplained flow of studies. - unfortunately during the courses, no concise methodology was presented for the project development. - briefly, groups started their designing phase too late (it was thursday). even though we had some ideas in ourminds, we could not have enough time to turn them into slides. More compact lectures pleaseNeed more time to finish product. Help in getting into reasonable groups. Some discussions were a bit too much (why did we discuss the agenda on day 3?) My group was excellent, although I would be careful in general about trying to get put one girl in each group.Seen this before, and with the wrong people it can be tricky to be the girl.the level may be higher, because most of the students already have experience. it was difficult to make thevideo in a day - so the instructors could walk around to the groups and help them finding the right ways to theidea. then the time-management may have worked out better.send (parts of) 1st assignment before summerschool - due to weak wiki at Nallikari it was very difficult to workon the assignment (youtube-AR example)at some points I found the slides a bit outdated but the last lecture contained lots of new stuffMaybe not possible, but some creativity sessions...Malcolm's teaching method of not telling clearly what to do and letting students "to discover" by themselves wasquite challenging within the short time limit - some kind of written instructions would have been niceAs this workshop is very much about programming and a considerably amount of the time in the workshop isused on actually producing a prototype it should be made more explicit which skills are needed or should beacquired before attending this workshop. With only a limited background in programming and no C# experienceit was very challenging to get above the tutorial stage.Well..it's rather difficult to point out something to be improved considering we only had few days to get ourproject working. I wanted to have something fully functional in the end but of course that was not possible.Maybe starting to work on an existing application would be less frustrating as there is already somefunctionality and you would only have to change things or improve others. That might work better for a 1-weekworkshop.The Junaio samples were useful but I consider working on an existing template would be better than startingfrom scratch. Of course, using a template has its own downsides as you probably cannot implement any ideayou have in mind but I suppose it would be easier to get started and have a final working result.I would also like to have better 'use-cases' samples. In general there are examples of how to use a specificfunction and I agree with that. I would like to have a fully functional application where most of the features areused so that you can see how everything is integrated.I've already mentioned I feel skeptical about the motivations behind the workshops content.some lectures were too superficialTutorials were went through quite fast. Would have been nice to learn the 3D printing / laser cutting too for thecasing, but I understand this was just an unfortunate thing that the equipment wasn't available.I did not learn anything new, except maybe 5-10% of the whole week was new to me.I have the profs the feedback as well, since I had several discussion that people felt that way.I would like to have theories on how to analyze data, not just to collect it. We are researchers everyone has

already been involved in this process of collecting data. so it was nothing new to us :(SchedulingLittle encouragement or feedback, missed opportunities to capture real value of collaborative process or fruitsof projects. Felt a little inert and disengaged. Expert facilitation and passionate engagement with content required.group dynamics were very poor in many of the groups - would perhaps be nicer if and more effective if peoplewere allowed to choose their own groups. The argument that this is what happens in real life does not hold, inreal life you have a supervisor, or you can quit your job.more devicesVery tight timeline, and I wish we have a bit more time to develop our project.I also suggested this to the instructors already, but I mentioned that it would be nice to use technology toextend the learning beyond the classroom. Set up web portal (using Moodle, for example) to have discussions, post files, comments, learning activities prior to the start of the workshop and also as a continuous space for usto go to after the workshop. My group wanted to continue to develop and research on the prototype wedeveloped over the week, and we just submitted a paper to a conference. You want to encourage this kind ofcollaboration that goes beyond the week we were in Oulu.more technical teachingsMalcolm`s teaching method was quite challenging at least for me who did not know much about the topicbeforehand. He did not really explain anything, which was good in a way, and we realized things ourselves. Itwas just a bit hard because I understood the point of the workshop on the last day and rest after the course.Ofcourse it was also a good thing:)Learning method was too abstract for me. Too long days. Sometimes i was confused and didn't understandwhat was going on.Little less lecture to give more time to develop

27. THE MOST VALUABLE THING(S) YOU LEARNED IN YOUR WORKSHOPNumber of respondents: 46

New brainstroming methods and ways to think about designing my prototypes.None.Very disappointed.Different methods for experience -driven design.Lots of things of myself, how I cope with stress, how I can (or not) let my other ideas to go and start workingwith other people's ideas. Working with total strangers very intensively for one week - that was hard! Also, I learned one method very thoroughly. That's really valuable, even if I wouldn't use this method myselfever, but now I'm able to understand this kind of work better and maybe teach others to use it. I have never been in this kind of intensive class before. Very interesting experience, one that I can warmlysuggest for all researchers to do at least once in their life.Don't be afraid to test and prototype devices if they seem ridiculous at first. All the general information related to ARExposure to the academic field of experience design. A nicely curated walk through current ideas and topics.Knowledge on what you can do with AR technology even nowadays.once again i got reminded that work devision is important and competencies have to be considered. theproblem is: when you always do what you already can do (and improve it even more), you will never get goodin other tasks... social events are very important. An excellent overview of the AR area & current topics.Practical skills I can put to use tomorrow.

Improved myunderstanding of C# and the Visual Studio programming environment.Looking to the history of AR I noticed significant hardware improvements. I would have expected that. I was notaware in the 70s there were AR applications and research projects in this area.In my opinion, maybe I'm subjective or I'm not fully aware of the actual AR technologies, the progress is ratherslow. In order to have a good AR experience you need to take care of a lot of things and this is not what theend-user expects.I believe there are many many things to be improved in this area and I'm not sure we are going to have fullyimmersive AR experiences or even simple but necessary (really useful) AR applications anytime soon.I also believe that an AR application must be not necessarily complex but rather stable and useful in order forthe end-user to start using it.Group working can be painful, challenging, and extremely tiring, but if you put the effort in, it is likely you willreceive a greater result out. Very basic- felt like it was aimed at under graduates.I realise that there were people (myself included) from anone computing background.More time with the teachers if in any way possibleEven with junaio (which is an easy platform) it can be difficult to get things done in so short amount of time.evaluation came short. - could have been done in the specific projects.cultural probe also came short. Some parts were less interesting where I already had a rich background in. Perhaps optional lectures wouldmake sense, e.g. more hardware focused which would have interested me more, or more software focused.More time for the prototypeNAi hoped that more architectural knowledge would have been integrated, but it was rather IxD applied on streetlevel ...More time for the final project presentation (e.g., for practicing it). What about having the presentation as a "dryrun" before the presentation to the other groups? That would also be a good possibility to get feedback - as wehaven't gotten any feedback on our final project (including presentation), unfortunately. Some of the lectures were very basic but probably needed.the deail-level may be higherI would have liked to go a bit more into technical details but it was actually not needed for he projects.Would have liked more material on how to prepare for this workshop. Especially when it comes to theprogramming.A fuller understanding of creative processes, more reliance on the abilities of multidisciplinary teams to gothrough an exploration/design/delivery process without having a schedule of a design process didactically 'told'to them - this is not how design or creativity works in practice.Statistic part was really superficial and boringWider overview of available components and example projects could have been useful info.very weak :( Both Profs did not engage themselves in the process or went around to help or give constructivefeedback.actually when I came back home to my home university after the school, i told them about my project and theyasked, so what feedback did you get. I had to say, none.we presented 10min but there was no time for questions or answersLittle connection to state of the art or prominent research culture or how this is applied into live contexts. Moreapplication to technology.perhaps a little more emphasis on practical work, some lectures seemed unnecessary. Especially towards theend of the workshop.include more frameworks besides JunarioThe content could aim at a higher level - a bit more challenging would be nice.probably half a day more could have benefited to nurture with the gadgeteer and hardware.

This openended exploratory style was really fruitful and underpinned by enough direction to keep us fromgetting too far off the mark. And we did follow a very clear procedure which is applicable to other projects.Group's activities: brainstorming (hats, legos, collage, random words), developing a low-fi prototypeThoughtful and interesting discussions, often curtailed too soon.Albrecht's teaching style was relaxed, intelligent and engaging. Tom was extremely helpful and patient.Mark was awesome!Very conversational, with a lot of flexibility and creativity involved. Too much reading materialVery didactic-there was no time to formulate a valid design - it should either have been all workshop (ideally ledby facilitators who are used to doing this kind of thing rather than academics) or all information based. It wasnot challenging enough intellectually to be aimed at post graduates.the first part concerning programming started very slowly and then it got more and more confusing, as thomaswent through new "topics" more quickly than before and scrolling up and down in the code lead to problems in"recreating" the code on one's own computer.would have been nice to have the device module at least for two persons instead of sharing it among a team offour. The room we were working in was far from optimal. The first day was really bad (because of the problems with the platform, it was impossible to follow the codingexamples)May be some more guidance in projectssome did not like the style of citing important people and the arrogance .... well architects are like this ....Show proven techniques how to work in this situation instead of only the result of others.the moderation in the project finding phase was good but this phase was a bit cumbersomenothing to improve-the lack of written instructions was at the beginning quite confusingA better description given before the workshop regarding software requirements could easily have saved anhour or two the first day if it was made clearer which software and especially which versions would be needed.Using a Mac with a virtual machine turned out to work just fine... the content. Not enough time and we were missing laser cutter :(TutorialsInterviews in the streetToo dispassionate and needs further attempts to support process and feedback (negatively or positively) onworking processes.Seemed unplanned and unorganised at times. Needed more structure.Mainly to make sure that the technical aspects are correct when preparation material are sent out.nothing. Totally happy with it.could have a bit better structured

This made me realise that I will not be looking at ubiquitous computing for my phd.I got to use methods that I can also later on use in my work. Also reading package was interesting and usefulfor later use.I'm not sure how useful this will be for me, but it was definitely interesting.Got valuable info from the lecturesThe workshop gave good material for deciding whether to include AR in my work later on.Very useful, both to take some of the ideas forward into other projects and to be aware (critically) of the state-of-the-art in experience design.can use the project for extended abstract or short paperwill use similar approaches in future workI now have a good idea of when and how I could use hardware prototyping during my PhD.I think I said everything beforeAgain, I really enjoyed the different people in my subgroup, as this is something I have no access to during mynormal Ph.D. routine.will see in the future!Learning a new prototyping system.we might write a paper about our prototyperesearch directionsprojectslearnt new stuff, built new stuff, met new people-i think there are many themes that i can come back to and this was a good introduction to UBI-WorldGot a great introduction to prototyping and Gadgeteer programming.Extremely useful, both to critique the content, and motivation.. and to learn about group workings.Good understanding for the .Net GadgeteerIt was really relevant to my phd.the collaboration afterwards! and the ambitions of my group to write papers on our topicThe procedures I learned which are applicable to other work, and the insight I got into fields other than my own.Learnt interesting technique that I had not had experience.

Learning a new prototyping toolwill be able to apply AR technology in my research projects from now on.It was somewhat different from my usual research focus so it gives me a fresh perspective that i canincorporate back into my research. It was a great introduction to the field, I am glad we took part in this workshop.

Doing the projects can be useful or not. Of course this is difficult because people have different skills and youcan't know those beforehand.I would like to have more direct answers on when is an AR application actually useful in reality. At the momentthere are many applications lacking real ways to utilize, good only for provoking your curiosity.more info on evaluation (because it is very important) and on "how to come up with new ideas"NAIt is a 4-day workshop, not a 4-year Ph.D. A few more constraints and guidance would have been useful.Time was short, so to some extent people did what they already knew to finish the project quickly.nothing to improvePotentially people with basic programming skills could have joined and worked on tutorials ect. to get a betterunderstanding of the programming environment.Extra time for contingency if things take longer than expected.Too little time and the content could be more in detail and advance. More examples. This knowledge transfer came from team members rather than teaching staff.Availability of extra sensors to provide greater scope for experimentation with toolkit.I would like to see more connection across disciplines. How this workshop is applicable and useful in otherareas of research.

Kaisa and Jonna pulled the workshop very well and they were also helpful when we needed something.Warm thanks! Very professionally led workshop. Thanks for taking the week off to teach us :)Thank you - enjoyed it very much.had lots of fun. thank you! Thanks Mark, this was a really great week.Thank you for an amazing week! The classes were very well structured, organized and delivered. The related example videos were shown, making the class more interactive and interesting. Thank you so much!!More working examples could help.Thank you for the inspiring workshop.Very happy with the workshop. Classroom wasn't good for group work, but that is hardly your fault =)Thanks Mark, you learned me very much. And your reading package is like a bible on my bedside.thank you!great workshop!Thank you !Thank you for the interesting workshop and week! This was an interesting workshop well shaped to a week of work. Providing the list of reading material for theexam at the beginning of the workshop would be a great improvement.

"Don't take it too seriously" was a comment I heard. Although I appreciate the friendly sentiment, in some waythis upset me. I was taking it seriously, because I was fully invested in the dynamics of the group and theproject idea. Maybe (I'm not certain, but maybe) the instructors should have been more sensitive to the fact that the studentswere 100% invested in their prototypes and concepts, even if the instructors themselves were not.Thank you for the nice lectures and helpful advices.Thank you, very good lectures, good instructor too!Thank you for the highly thoughtful leading of this workshop; you pushed us into new waters while alsoteaching, through practice, procedures and approaches to design and presentation that can be applied in allkinds of work. You gave me a lot to think about (personally as well as professionally) as regards attention! Please apply creative pressure, allow time for the value of collaboration to emerge. Continuous and thoroughfeedback throughout. Effort to foster co-working and passionate engagement with project work. Effort todevelop live briefs.Great job on balancing theory and hands-onTop-notch instructors, caring, warm, interesting, interested, and in general, try very hard to provide us anurturing and inclusive environment to be creative and going off with our ideas. VThanks for the workshop - I enjoyed it a whole lot!!Congratulation for excellent job!!!Thank so much.

A long way from the city centre. Lack of availability of food nearby.Distance to workshopTransportationWifi was bad.Would probably not stay in chalets again. Prefer to book personally hotel or other.would have preferred to be closer to downtown i did not enjoy the bathroom as I am used to higher standards; even the towels did not become try easily...Although a proper warning was given, the ability to buy food somewhere the first evening would have made iteven better. :)Better opportunities for cheaper bike-renting!Free sauna!?Would pay a higher price if bike was included.Logistics / price of bike rentalIt could be just psychology: The combined price of cottage + bike is actually quite economic.- nets required to the main windowsToo crowded when staying in 4Too remote No real opportunity enjoying the camp area eitherBlack out blinds, they let a ridiculous amount of light in.No dark drapes for the windows. No hair dryer.Almost no wifi.Nowhere close to buy real food.WiFi connection, cottage tends (to much light in the sleeping time).weak wifi connection at cottagesbikes are expensivemore bikesDidn't know about the sauna until the last day!WiFi signalA get to know you session where you can meet people AT the campsite, and get to know where differentpeople are staying...Because of the light I had problem for sleeping. I suggest to change the curtains with thicker ones. Also I think4 people for one cottage was a lot. 3 is perfect since we had just 3 bedrooms.Hotel breakfast would have been handy. And private room. But it is good that its cheap as all might not getfunding.maybe if you provide an extra bus for all of us would be better. we never walked, it was too far away. andalways took the public bus or taxi. was quite expensive :(A bit cramped overall.Perhaps more socializing in the camping area, have BBQ every nightA better wifi signalLack of transportation options to various locationsA bit remote and rusticWould be better if it is closer to the schoolIf we were to think about designing for "connected cities", it would be better to put us in the city.internet connectioni would have preferred, if there was an optional price that would include breakfast as well.
