November 28Thanksgiving-No meeting

The witty newsletter will be back next Thursday, as our Esteemed Editor has return for his trip to the Far East. He should be bringing us a fistful of banners from other clubs he visited along the way.

Here are a few pictures he sent along.

Captain Kirk opened the meeting with a sharp ring of the bell, announcing that L.B. Broach would lead the Prayer and Gene Champagne would lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

Yoram Solomon was the friendly face at the door greeting everyone.

Sergeant-at-Arms Nathan Barbera tried to introduce Visiting Rotarians, but there were none.

John Caldwell had Robert King as his guest, Sara Akers brought Eddy Badr as her guest and Jason Rice brought a board member of Rover Dramawerks, Lindsey Humphries, and of course, Reedy Spigner brought his daughter, April Spigner.

Jerry Kezhaya was the featuring Rotarian for the week. He grew up in Detroit , where his father started a repair shop in 1946, and was the first repair shop in that area to repair automatic transmissions.

He has been in and around the car business since he was a child. His first job out of high school was in the repair business and he came to Dallas to start a business of his own in 1980.

The birthdays for this week were Debbie Watson, Marc Lewis and Jessica Jackson.

Alan Feigenbaum introduced the exe ve director of the Hendrick Scholarship Found on, Marcy Wilson. The Hendrick Scholarship Found on Annual Golf Tournament will be on November 1, 2013, at Stonebriar Country Club in Frisco, Texas.

Marcy began her talk with the realiz on that most people living in Plano are privileged and more than fortunate. She was the daughter of a U.S. diplomat and she had always had special privileges which others did not have. She is doing this job because she has had a hard me ge ng over the fact that life is not fair. The kids the Hendrick Scholarship Found on have learned the hard way, life is not fair and they are trying very hard to overcome this. So the Found on tried to even the playing field for these kids by teaching them the simple life lessons which their parents had not taught them, such as banking, credit, loans, how to buy a car, how to sign a lease agreement, and even how to study or which classes to take. So mentors are chosen to help each student with the decisions of life and school, and to show them where and from whom to get advice and help.

Here is a bit of background on the Hendrick Scholarship Found on:

“The Hendrick Scholarship Foundation is named after Dr. H. Wayne Hendrick, former superintendent of Plano ISD, who

retired in 1991 after serving the community of Plano for 30 years. Under his leadership, the Plano school system developed into one of the most noteworthy in the state, known for the high student achievement levels.

The quality of the school system attracted many corporations to the area which in turn enabled Plano and the surrounding communities to become one of the most desireable places to live in the country. To acknowledge the role that Dr. Hendrick played in the growth of Plano, in 1991 a group of local community leaders created a nonprofit organization named the Hendrick Academy of Honor which would give college scholarships to the most needy children in Plano.

Dr. Hendrick currently sits on the Board of Directors and continues to be involved with activities such as the student selection process.

Originally named the Hendrick Academy of Honor, in order to

better reflect our mission, the organization was renamed the

Hendrick Scholarship Foundation in 2009.

Since 1991, the Hendrick Foundation has provided over $1 million in scholarship awards to over 250 students.”

Marcy brought with her a PowerPoint program containing many of the scholarship recipients they are currently working with, and she explained about each one as their picture was shown. She also brought with her, a young girl who is a senior at Texas Women’s University. She came from South Africa with her grandmother and her Aunt and some of her cousins. They lived in government housing and her cousins did not value edu on. To them, a job paid the bills and bought food, so they dropped out of school as soon as they could. Her family split up as they found work and her aunt moved to Dallas. She had to take three bases and the train to get to and from school every day. Her aunt asked her to leave because she was a burden and not a wage earner. Her school counselor guided her to City Place, where she stayed un aduated high school.

All of the Hendrick Scholarship Found on students have a story to tell. We have heard many over the years and they always touch our hearts and remind us why every year the Hendrick Scholarship Found on Golf Tournament is so important to our club.
