Catalina Sky Survey—Searching for Near-Earth Objects

Ed Beshore, Operations Manager of the Catalina Sky Survey

(CSS) walked us through a fas-

cinating review of their work

searching for asteroids and com-

ets that, if they hit earth as

they had hit Jupiter in 1994,

would cause catastrophic ef-

fects. The CSS mission is to

contribute to the inventory of

near-earth objects (NEOs), or

more specifically, the poten-

tially hazardous asteroids that

pose an impact risk to Earth

and it's inhabitants. Aside from

the uncertainty of an asteroid

impact, and whether there are

means of mitigating them, we

now have the technology to in-

ventory the NEO population -

the first element in assessing the threat. Given the catastro-

phic consequences of a collision with a large object, it would

be irresponsible not to carry out a complete inventory. The

NEO Observations Program is a result of a 1998 congressional

directive to NASA to conduct a program to identify large bod-

ies to an estimated 90 percent confidence level or better.

Xavier’s and Miguel’s mothers were on hand to witness the presentations. Also, Cindy Godwin (not shown) from the Tucson Club congratulated them for their accomplishments. Welcome new member Teree Bergman! Teree is the Immediate

Past President of the Oro Valley Rotary Club and is a past mem-

ber of the Casas Adobes Rotary Club of Tucson and Rotary Club

of Columbus, Indiana. Teree has held many leadership positions

in her previous clubs, including serving as District Governor for

District 6580 in Indiana for the Rotary year of 2000-

2001. She currently serves as District 5500 Foundation Chair.
