We had a great time attending the Bahrain F1 GP last month, spotting all the drivers and celebrities in the Paddock! We’re thankful it all went off without a hitch...

MAY is the most important month of the year for one simple reason: This month it’s MY BIRTHDAY (cue fanfare and cheers)! However, before you all run out and start buying me extravagantly expensive gifts and clubbing together to throw a spectacular surprise party with performances by guest celebrities, etc., let me first say that I will actually be travelling away from the Gulf, to Thailand, to visit relatives for my birthday, so I won’t be around. Sorry to disappoint you all. Maybe next year…

This does, on the other hand bring me conveniently to my next subject – travel. I am, in fact, probably making a mistake by taking my well-deserved leave so early, and not in the months of July or August when the sensible people leave, thus skipping as much of the country-sized furnace Bahrain becomes during those months as possible.

However, most of you will be starting to think about your summer holidays right about now, so this month we’ve

dedicated the magazine to travels far and wide, to give you some inspiration in making the right choice for your holiday. At the end of the day, we all want different things from a break – some want peace, some want parties, and some just want to see new things. One of the fantastic benefits of living in the Gulf is that we are literally in the ‘Middle’ East, and many great destinations, from Europe to the Far East, are only a few hours away by plane, so make the most of it!

As for me – having taken my holiday early I’ve resigned myself to the fact that I will be spending most of the summer trying to get into the car without burning myself on some surface or other, and dashing from car to building as fast as possible so that I’m not drenched in sweat when I arrive everywhere. And failing.

With the upcoming Bahrain Top Model set to take place on May 25, you are all probably wondering who will be in the BIG line-up. Well here you are, a full update of what and who to expect…

You have all heard of Amwaj, known as the ‘green-zone’ of Bahrain as well as being the location of floating city, white beaches and above all, Muju, a party place which has hosted a tonne of pretty epic parties. The Dragon Hotel has seen the Prestige Party during the Formula One weekend, as well as Ibiza parties-a-plenty.Well this month is set to be even hotter (literally and physically) than ever. Opening DJ of the finale will be Mr. Doris. During the summer months, this man helps to represent the new wave of musical expansion in Ibiza with residencies at globally recognised clubs such as Space and Pacha. While during the winter period, he holds down a coveted residency for London based Soundcrash (alongside DJ Vadim & Mr Thing). All this between a massive international touring schedule that has seen him smash parties on every continent.In the studio Mr Doris is as flexible as he is behind the turntables [DASH] past production has taken in genres ranging from downtempo beats & hip hop to house & drum & bass with tracks being used by the likes of MTV & Red Bull for their respective promotions. With such international demand it’s a wonder that Gordon ever gets time to come home, but not forgetting his roots, back on UK terra firma he is a regular feature for Gallery at Ministry of Sound. As a trumpet player he not only played for Sade on her world tour but also for Madonna at private parties she hosted in Miami & New York. Gordon has released over 170 12” records under such names as DJ Edge, Trumpetman, Edge Test, Trumpet Thing, Digital Domain, Gordon Matthewman & Gordon Edge.

Born and bred in North Carolina, Christopher Peyton is the son of a travelling evangelist, who from early on encouraged him to develop his vocal talents within the local Pentecostal church. By the time he was old enough to go to college Peyton was already working closely with his father as his ‘Minister Of Music’. This required him to direct the choir, perform as a soloist and lead the worship in church every Sunday. After high school Peyton went on to Lee College, a small Christian academy in the mountains of Tennessee where girls weren’t allowed to wear shorts, dancing was forbidden and ‘everybody shared the same insular mentality’. Unimpressed by this small mindedness, he emerged with a ‘deeply suspicious view of organized religion’ but at the same time a healthy respect for the church’s power to nurture talent. So even now, he says ‘it’s not uncommon to find me singing the old time spirituals and hymns that gave my voice its starting place, and consequently its strength’.After college he embarked on a journey of self-discovery that took him to Atlanta, California, Columbia, Washington DC, Manhattan and, finally, to London, where he’s been based for the last five years. The singer continued to write his own gospel tinged club tracks which eventually came to the attention of Hed Kandi’s Mark Doyle.The official DJ Magazine’s No.1 Female for 2011/2012, we managed to get hold of her for an exclusive interview - turn over to find out more about this female DJ, sure to get people on the dance floor until the early ours.

This is it, ladies and gentlemen! The culmination of yet another Bahrain’s Top Model Competition, only this time, instead of the Final Three, it’s the Final Six!

So now we come to the final chapter - the moment all the models have been waiting for…

the crowning of the Bahrain’s Top Model 2012! The Grand Finale will take place on Friday, May 25.

For the first time in the history of the competition, this year male models as well as female models have taken part in the competition, doubling the size of the campaign, and as a result, the appeal to you, the voting public!

We know this because this year, by the third round, we had already received more votes than we did in the whole of last year’s competition. With thousands of votes already counted, we are expecting at least a thousand more in this final month.

And, as you have to come to expect by now, we are ending the season with style - with a glamorous fashion show featuring Top Models past and present, the crowning of Bahrain’s Top Female AND Male model, the King and Queen of Bahrain’s fashion scene, and to round it all off, a spectacular VIP after-party to show our appreciation to you, the public, who have supported and voted all these months making the competition the success that it is.

Many of you may have seen by now the models’ campaigns all over Facebook and Twitter. In an attempt to try and boost their personal portfolios across the island, we take our hat off to the model’s who have been taking a lot of time spreading their names amongst their friends, family and the general public.

So far, the girls’ outfits will be provided by SAB Couture - so make sure you keep a close eye on them (not that the guys will need any encouragement!) to check out the latest trends from this brand.

F1 a Success!So despite a few isolated pockets of trouble, the Bahrain F1 GP went off without a hitch, and we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief… and raise two fingers at the foreign media that made Bahrain out to be a warzone, and who now look like a bunch of incompetent idiots! As one level-headed F1 Blogger wrote during the F1 weekend, “It is eye-opening what is being reported, because it bears no resemblance to what we are seeing.”

Gulf Air Gets Family Friendly AwardWe were pleased to hear about Gulf Air getting a prestigious Family Friendly Airline Award from an online Facebook poll by the US-based Kids First Fund. Now, we know Gulf Air has its problems, but we also happen to know a few of the hard-working cabin crew who double as Sky Nannies on the airline, and the sterling work they do helping families with children have a more enjoyable flight, and it’s great to hear their work being recognised!

Armed Robberies? In Bahrain?We’re alarmed to hear about the recent spate of armed robberies that have taken place in our relatively crime-free country – we thought crime like this was the stuff of more populated places elsewhere in the world! It’d be sad to see bullet-proof glass going up in shops and cold stores across Bahrain as we see in Europe and the US. This is the price of development, we suppose…

Everyone knows what a WAG is. I used to watch Footballer’s Wives and laugh

when the WAGs all looked like they had been dipped into fake tan by their peroxide-bleached hair. The strange thing, though, is that I should technically be classified as one myself. Until mid last year, I found myself in a series of dramatically wrong relationships, in all of which the other halves had been rugby players.

I don’t think it was until recently when I began to question my current status. Despite the fact my “friend” plays for the Bahrain team, the

term WAG never crossed my mind. Perhaps if I turned up to the games wearing sky high heels, short dresses and so much make up on I can’t see (that and bug-sized sunglasses), I may deserve that title. What really makes me different (without wanting to sound like I am bigging myself up massively) is that I genuinely enjoy the game – the speed, the skill, the crowd… and despite the fact I am banned from shouting “Come on Number 10!” due to embarrassment, it still doesn’t stop me from showing my appreciation for the game in front of me.

Saying this though, I for one am

glad that the season is over. My bank balance is breathing a sigh of relief that it won’t be taking a weekly hit from the BRFC as is my poor liver which has been put through a series of terrible hangovers since the start of 2012. Don’t get me wrong, I will be sure to make an appearance at the End Of Season Rugby Dinner on May 17, because let’s face it, someone’s got to help the man up when he is dribbling in a corner at the end of the night. I may now be a WAG, at least I can be a caring one… as long as he doesn’t ruin the dress.

You have been dubbed as the world’s number one female DJ, what do you think of that?I thank everyone who supported me and continues to appreciate what I do. I am so blessed to do what I love and am thankful for everything that comes my way. To reach this position is an amazing achievement and it proves that dreams really do come true.

Has music always been a passion of yours?I studied music from a young age, finishing school for music back in Romania where I practiced violin and piano. My musical taste has evolved throughout the years; music is what makes my life colourful and helps me get through the good and bad times.

What influence does your Romanian background have on your music today?I do try to incorporate my Romanian traditional influences into my productions when possible. I never forget where I came from and it’s nice to add a bit of your roots into your work.

Who is your favourite artist you have collaborated with?I’ve enjoyed working with Sied van Riel on our collaboration, Contrasts, the Dutch have a unique sound but also loved working with my good friend Vicky Devine on Glamour, and who knows who I might work with in the future.

What kind of music do you play and why?I like to play a bit of everything. My sets vary from house to tech and trance. It all depends on my mood, the crowd, the club, but I enjoy finding

From where do you draw your inspiration?I get inspired from the world around me, certain events that happen in my life, things or people that leave an imprint on me.

What do you want the audience to get out of your performance?My performance represents my story that I am communicating to the crowd. My feelings, my mood are all put into my music, into my presence on that stage, and in return I get my energy and adrenaline from the crowd, so it’s a give and take situation. They complete each other.

If you could perform anywhere in the world, where would that be?I would love to perform at the Pyramids in Cairo. I am fascinated with Egypt and everything related and I have this amazing set up in my mind. Basically bringing the old Egypt back to life though modern music.

What does it take to make it big in this industry?I think hard work and dedication are the keys to success. But at the same time, having a good management team behind you is as important these days. Everything they take care of, from press photos, music releases to the way you as an artist are presented to the world contributes to your success. Having a good team is as important as your work in the studio or your gigs around the world. All these assets create the perfect package to make it to the top.

Asides from being a DJ, what other talents do you have?I have a very, very good eye to spot mistakes in movies… I should have been a movie critic ☺ oh… and I can spend money as if it’s going out of fashion!

Who is your role model and why?My dad… he has always been a fighter and never gave up, no matter what.

What are you listening to at the moment?Nothing at the moment. Spending ten hours in the studio ends up being painful for your ears, so I try to give them a break every time I get the chance. What do you do for R&R?I put my pajamas on, I order my Chinese and I lay on my sofa with my cute puppy Maya watching Friends. For me, this is the perfect picture of relaxation.

What do you value most in life?Honesty and real friends who are there when you need them… Oh and people who respect your sleep and do not slam doors!

Tell us a secret…I always travel with my pillow - all around the world - including on planes, otherwise I can’t sleep. Why do people have to be surprised when they see me like this? I simply love my comfort and my sleep.

A much-loved local and social hub for many of Bahrain’s residents, the Rugby Club is set to celebrate 40 years in the country. Here’s what they have planned…

Andrew Weaver is set to stage an exclusive exhibition under the patronage of the Prime

Minister, His Royal Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa. Set to take place in the Bahrain Arts Centre, located next to the National Museum, residents of Bahrain can view the photographs first-hand from May 12-17.

The book, which is available in three sizes, is the first of its kind to be published about modern Bahrain. The exhibition will feature over 100 original photographs taken from the publication, and there will also be the chance for you to buy limited edition framed photographs – a perfect addition to one of your walls!

This exhibition will undoubtedly not be Andrew’s last. With his recent book becoming a hot talking point amongst locals and even in embassies around the region, the only way is up for this photographer. Andrew is also set to make a sequel, Above Two Seas, where he will spend his time taking aerial shots of Bahrain. He is also working on a title based on the history of Muharraq, so watch this space for any updates.

With so much hype about this incredible book, it would be a shame to miss out on catching a glance at some of the finest photography seen in Bahrain.

The day after the ball, blurry-eyed and with slightly tender heads, is the annual DHL Memorial Match between the Bahrain RFC and DHL Barbarians, followed by a barbeque supper and live entertainment.

May 19 will mark the end of the week’s festivities with a farewell pool party. Come armed with your Hawaiian shorts and grab some Caribbean cocktails as well as food stations to eat till you’re fit to burst.

The aim of the week is to bring former and current members as well as guests of the Bahrain RFC together to celebrate the club’s successes, achievements and overall contribution to the development of the game and local community through the years.

Hundreds of people are expected to attend the events throughout the week, as well as a number of ex-international players planning to travel back and lace up their boots for the DHL game.

In better news, there is also now a bus service available to take you home once you have had that one too many! It’s cheap as well, so now you have no excuses!

It is always a good sign when a club of such popularity is constantly

on the go, especially when it comes to celebrating their 40th anniversary. The Bahrain Rugby and Football Club in Saar is home and a definite local to a huge amount of families and couples living in the Kingdom.

To kick off the week there is a welcome reception and curry supper. Manu will be sure to churn out some hearty fare while a special honours board will be unveiled featuring 120 international players who have visited the club.

May 16 is a Golden Oldies fixture, followed by a BMMI Schutzenfest and live music from Dubai-based Declan O’Sullivan, aka the Paddyman (many of you might have seen him at the Irish Festival).

Thursday, May 17 is the End-of-Season Dinner where, just like the Irish Ball, women will be dressing up to the nines in their best dresses having spent hours at the salons and in front of the mirrors (Perhaps you should re-read Zara’s column about her thoughts for this one). Tickets are BD35 for members and BD40 for guests, and the ball will be held at the Crowne Plaza hotel. Last year was a pretty big deal, and this year is sure to be no different.

Bahrain seems to be learning pretty quickly. You may all remember our ‘Green’

Issue back in February, where we interviewed a large number of environmentalists and learnt a great deal about current and future campaigns taking place on the island. It is, therefore, with great pleasure that FACT is involved in such an important event that will hopefully encourage the younger generation to open their eyes to the importance of ‘going green’.

Under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Abdulla Bin Rashid Al Khalifa, the Royal University for Women is hosting a two-day conference on May 16 and 17, jam-packed with seminars and talks, all designed to shed some light on a topic so few seem to be acquainted with.

ICT plays an integral role in changing the quality of our lives, yet there is more to be done to avoid its negative effects and generate more value. Two of the key concerns for many organisations, governments, international institutions and individuals are ICT and the environment. Both topics heavily involve financial exposure and as well as finding solutions to minimise costs, increase returns and change the quality and sustainability of our lives.

The conference is designed to provide attendees with the required knowledge and awareness about methods, techniques and practises that apply to ICT Leaders in building their Green ICT Strategy and managing their operational activities.

national ideas, this is the perfect chance for attendees to explore practical cases that are not just limited to infrastructure lifecycle.

Let’s just take a second to process all this. In simple terms, this conference is taking place to teach us, or perhaps update those of you who are already familiar with this area, about the importance of the relationship between ICT and our environment.

So who is going to be there? This will undoubtedly be attended

by CEOs from major companies, not just in Bahrain, but from the Gulf as well. The conference is relevant to everyone whose job revolves around using a computer, especially IT Managers, Security Managers, Auditors, Environment Leaders and IT Specialists.

What’s the line-up?Each day has its own theme, starting

with Day One – Green IT Drivers, on Wednesday, 16 May. After registration, attendants are invited to listen to the welcome talk by the Governor of the Southern Governorate, His Excellency Sheikh Abdulla Bin Rashid Al Khalifa, followed by a speech from the President of the University, Professor Mazin Jumah.

The day will continue with separate seminars, such as “Towards National Green ICT Strategy”, “Institutional, National to International Greenology”, “Green ICT Motivation Beyond the Trends” and “Green Computing Roadmap”.

There will be a lot of information being processed through the event, and therefore each day ends at 1.30pm and the attendees will get the chance

to enjoy a bite to eat and even enjoy a spot of networking.

Day Two is the day of ‘Green ICT Leader Toolkits’. Set to be a busier morning than the first, the first seminar will start at 9am with “Green ICT lifecycle from cradle to Green grave”, followed by “Towards a sustainable ICT Sector”, “The Path to Green Wireless”, “IT Asset Green Disposition and Data Security” and finally “Facing ICT Green Operational Challenges”.

There will also be some big names involved during the two days. Those to look out for will be Fareed Busherhri from UNEP/ROWA, Ahmed Buhazza, the Executive Director and Co-Founder of Recycle IT, Dr Claire Cosgrove, a Faculty Member at AMA International University, and Dr Mazen Ali, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Information Systems from UOB.

The slogan for this event is “Sustaining Our Tree of Life”, and with the line-up as mentioned, it would seem that such an accomplishment is possible. What is very clear is that the auditorium at the Royal University for Women will be teeming with people eager to learn and get involved in a campaign that will shape their futures as well as for generations yet to come.

Z: What inspired you to get into music?

James: For me it definitely started with my parents, both played instruments. Then obviously I got inspired by watching great acts like Elbow and Radiohead. I have constantly been taken to live concerts and that’s what really got me into it, that feeling you get from listening to live music.

Jo: I listen to what my mum and older brother, who’s nine years older, used to listen to. I started playing drums, then I started singing because I realised the microphone is a lot easier to carry

around than a drum kit.Z: Did you get professional

training? Jo: No I didn’t, I did music A

Level, and I was in the church choir, but that was it while I was growing up. The vicar was amazing and that stayed with me. The rest was self-taught.

James: I went to ATM in Guildford and did contemporary music there, so we learned stagecraft and how to be the best we can be.

Z: Are the people who inspired you when you were younger the same people now or have your tastes changed?

With JJ’s still standing as one of the best hot spots in town, the new band is sure to keep the punters happy.

Do you try to copy their styles?

James: My favourite bands when I was younger are obviously still at the top but you see people in a different light once you understand how people are doing it. For example, you look at Adele and think I might not have liked that when I was younger but I can appreciate how technically amazing she is and her stagecraft and performance. The same with Bryan Adams, I didn’t really like him and thought him quite cheesy but from a performance perspective, you start to engage with him. So I guess, as you get to know more about the industry, and as you grow in playing, your taste does change and definitely matures.

Jo: I think you always have a nostalgia though, and revert back as soon as a certain song comes on. That’s what I love about music; the emotions that it invokes. It’s difficult to listen to new music with what we do, as we are doing a lot of covers and learning stuff all the time, so you have to make the effort to listen to more music and the new tracks coming out.

Z: Do you put your own twist on tracks and performances?

James: Yes, but its more like we make the song work for us. So for example, if there’s a big instrumental part in the middle, say in ‘Alright Now’ there is a 20 min bass solo, we cut that out and put a trading solo in the middle instead. That keeps the energy there and people listening. A while ago we did a cover of Sting’s ‘Every Breath You Take’ but we made it really dark with a different twist on it.

Jo: You’ve got to recognise it, and it’s got to be the right pitch, but then you have to try make it your own. Our tagline is “the UK’s most original covers band”.

Z: Why Bahrain? And how long are you here for?

Jo: We are here until mid-July. I have come out here a few times with other bands for two nights at a time, always at JJ’s. And this is the 5th time that

For those of you who have just read about ‘James and Jo’, you will be pleased to know that ‘The Noise’, the best new thing to have hit the JJ’s stage, also contains this splendid duo.

This band is no stranger to performing. They have played at JJ’s 10th Birthday Celebration, on P&O cruise liners and in Bahrain itself. The band has also been selected to perform at many exclusive private events in hotels, villas, clubs as well as doing their part for the troops abroad.

So who are these guys? Well you have Josephine as a lead vocalist, alongside James on the guitar, Elliot known as the ‘drum thwacker’ and Ben as the ‘boom bassist’. This band have an originals band called ‘Us Wolves’, a group who have exploded on to the UK’s music scene and have just finished a two-month tour of England.

The Noise are known for their infectious enthusiasm that spreads through the crowd during their performance. Talented and brought together through their joint determination to work and improve their talents, this band can be enjoyed by any age (obviously not under 18 in JJ’s).

When you watch this band on stage, you can’t help but get up and dance. With a wealth of experience, serious attitude and obvious ability, these guys are first class and worth a watch. Head down to JJ’s, grab a few drinks, and watch this four-piece cover band. See you there!

Making some serious Noise

GO: Head down to Camelot every Monday to catch these two from 9.15pm and JJs, Wednesday and Thursday from 10pm and Friday from 6pm.

I’ve come here. I love it but I’ve never been out here long enough to appreciate anything about it.

James: We are usually really busy in the UK and we have just done a tour with our original band, but it just came at the right time and Bahrain sounded good.

Jo: Here there is a sense of positivity where people encourage you to do well as opposed to begrudging you for trying.

James: There is a big sense of community here, and not everyone’s got a chip on their shoulder.

Z: How did you two meet?Jo: James came to play drums

in my old band and we threw him in right at the deep end with just two or three days to learn a set. We just got on from there.

James: I saw Jo and thought, “Yes, you’re really good,” and asked her if she wanted to start a new band, so I basically stole her, which went down really well! The good thing about our band is that because it is dual fronted, we can do the male and female solos and harmonies together, which is really important.

Z: If you had to choose a favourite song to play – originals AND covers?

James: ‘Mirrors’ by our originals band Us Wolves, you can get that on iTunes. And cover, which obviously changes but right now, ‘Teen Spirit’.

Jo: I can’t choose between ‘Cochise’ or ‘Desperado’ acoustic by the Eagles.

Z: What can people expect from you during your time here?

James: We never play the same set twice. With Camelot, we try to play more laid back-style songs. It’s basically all different styles of music, different genres and artists, but all acoustically.

Jo: It’s like Live Lounge style in the UK. I’m loving it here at Camelot, just to kick back and enjoy ourselves. It creates a really nice atmosphere with live music in the background.

Welcome readers, to FACT’s virtual trip around the world, from the West coast of the United States to the very corner of the world, New Zealand, and all our favourite destinations in between.

We start our journey on the West Coast of the United States, in one of the world’s most famous and exciting cities, Los Angeles, California. There is so much to see and do in this iconic town that it’s advisable to plan your trip well to make sure you get the best out of your holiday.

L.A. has been the birthplace of so many cultural movements and fashions that it’s hard to know where to begin. To start with, it is home to the greatest part of America’s film and music industry, and is a world leader in terms of television and stage production, video games and recorded music. The only movie industry bigger than Hollywood was actually named after it – Bollywood, in India.

Everywhere you go has some cultural significance, and new movements and trends are created on an almost daily basis, so that there is constant cultural revolution and evolution meaning that there is ALWAYS something new to see and do.

Aside from being America’s second most populous city after New York, Los Angeles has also been ranked as the world’s third richest city and the fifth most powerful and influential city, and it is the third largest economic centre in the world, after Tokyo and New York.

To summarise, we think it’s fair to say that L.A. ranks very highly on the list of Places-To-See-Before-You-Die!

Hollywood – No trip to Los Angeles would be complete without visiting the beating heart of America’s film industry. Practically anywhere you look is an iconic image, and it’s perfectly normal to see world-famous Hollywood stars sitting in a sidewalk café drinking coffee and reading a paper. It is also the birthplace of Glam Metal, a genre which spawned bands such as Motley Crue and Guns N Roses, and many of the infamous venues where they built their fanbase still survive today.Venice Boardwalk – For a slice of pure, undistilled Californian wackiness, a visit to Venice Boardwalk (officially called Ocean Front Walk) is an absolute must. Everything that is weird and wonderful in Los Angeles is condensed along this stretch of

Moving over to the East Coast of America, Orlando is a city in the state of Florida that is home to a number of world-famous theme parks. These parks form the backbone of its tourism industry, which attracts a staggering 51 million visitors a year!

The most famous of these is the Walt Disney World Resort, aka Disney World, which alone comprises four theme parks, two water parks, 23 hotels and five golf courses! Outside of Disney

World, there are several more world-famous theme parks, including

Universal Orlando Resort, SeaWorld Orlando, and Wet ‘n Wild Water Park.

Orlando is also host to America’s second-biggest movie industry after Hollywood, thanks to several studios being located there, and is considered the base of America’s indie movie scene. Movies made in Orlando include The Blair Witch Project and Monster, starring Charlize Theron. This is in addition to the plethora of theatres staging live productions throughout the year, and an international theatre festival which takes place annually.

Do you need any more convincing? If you have any doubts, just look at the numbers: 51 million people can’t be wrong!

Disney World – This might be stating the obvious, but Disney World is actually the city’s biggest attraction, and most of the many millions of visitors to Orlando go there just for this reason. And you’d be mistaken in thinking that it’s just for kids – there’s a huge amount to see and do in this massive resort, for both adults and kids, and you can’t quite describe the magic of Disney World until you’ve seen if for yourself. Movie Magic – If you’re at all interested in movies, then visiting the two studios in Orlando, the Disney Hollywood Studios and the Universal Studios will provide an absolutely unforgettable experience. These two centres of cinematic entertainment

Things to doboast sets where actual movies are made, live stunt shows, real props from famous movies (such as one of the Walkers from Star Wars at Disney Hollywood Studios) and fantastic movie-based rides that recreate some of that movie magic!Go To The Theatre – Orlando plays host to a disproportionately large number of theatres, with many shows from Broadway and beyond being staged in the city’s many playhouses. The city also hosts the Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival, which brings touring theatre companies from around the world together, and features plays by both new and well-known writers and companies.

For culture, beauty and artistry, there are few places in the world that will overwhelm your senses like Tuscany. Considered by many to be one of the most beautiful regions on Earth, Tuscany’s scenery and innate natural beauty have inspired some of the world’s most famous artists. Infamous historical figures such as Dante, Botticelli, Michelangelo, Da Vinci and many more have made their home in Tuscany.

The region has no less than six UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and many of these are simply the historical centres of various towns in the region, being themselves stunning examples of historic architecture and art.

And we haven’t even started with the food! With a rich agricultural industry, the finest and freshest ingredients are inherent in the local cuisine, with breads, cheeses, vegetables, fruits and meats all grown and produced locally. The region is also famous for its wines, and many vineyards dot the countryside, each with their own unique and individual flavours.

And then there is fashion. One of Tuscany’s main cities, Florence, is widely held to be the birthplace of the modern fashion industry in Italy. Gucci, Roberto Cavalli and Emilio Pucci are just three examples of designers who have their headquarters in Florence.

Art, culture, history, scenery, food, wine and fashion. Is there anything we’ve missed…

The Culture Trail – You can’t go to Tuscany and not take in all the historical sites dotted around the region. While this might take a fair bit of driving, it’ll be worth the effort. Be sure to visit the aforementioned UNESCO World Heritage Sites, namely the historical centres of Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, and Pienze, as well as the square of the Cathedral of Pisa, and the Val d’Orcia. Museums and galleries galore as well as an abundance of cafés and restaurants can be found around each of these sites.Thermal Baths – The town of Saturnia in Maremma is famous for its thermal baths. Warm, sulphurous waters spring naturally out of the mountainside, giving rise to many luxurious wellness and spa centres that capitalise on the therapeutic properties

Things to doof the water. Even if you don’t want to pay for expensive treatments in the spas (even though they’re worth it, in our humble opinion), you absolutely MUST visit the outdoor waterfall Cascate del Mulino, which is made up of natural pools of the warm thermal water, and is free to the public.The Wind Grotto – A beautiful system of caves and grottoes located in the Park of the Apuan Alps, the Grotta del Vento is a stunning natural wonder that shouldn’t be missed by anyone visiting Tuscany. To get there, one must first reach the village of Fornovalasco, which is a scenic trip in itself through the Tuscan hills and mountains. The cave network is so large that there are several different tours to choose from, but any one of them will take your breath away.

Croatia has had a bad rap ever since the devastating war the Baltic region experienced in the nineties, with some people having a misguided preconception of a grim and poor little former Yugoslav state, but this could not be further from the truth. The reality is a happy and prosperous and scenic country with hundreds of miles of breathtakingly beautiful coastline stretching along the Adriatic Sea.

During the summer months, a moderate, warm and balmy climate makes it a favourite holiday destination for tourists from both Western and Eastern Europe. Tourism therefore plays a major part in Croatia’s economy, and at one point it was ranked as the 18th most popular tourist destination in the world. In 2005 Lonely Planet named it as their Top Pick destination, and National Geographic Adventure Magazine named it as Destination of the Year in 2006. In 2008, it attracted 11.26 million tourists.

With beautiful scenery, medieval castles and Renaissance architecture, historical sites including Roman ruins and seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites, fantastic food and wine, and some of the most beautiful beaches and coastline in Europe, Croatia is fast becoming one of the world’s hottest tourist destinations. So, get in there before it becomes too crowded and overpriced!

CroatiaWalk the Walls – One of the most famous spots in Croatia is the old fortified town of Dubrovnik. For a more rustic travel experience, Nepal is a country that is poor in economic terms, but staggeringly rich in natural beauty and splendour. Situated in the Himalayas, at no point throughout your time in the country will you be in a place where a stunning vista can’t be seen. Even in the heart of Kathmandu you’re surrounded by the majestic Himalayan Mountains.

If you’re escaping Bahrain for the summer to beat the heat, why not go to the other extreme, and go for a skiing holiday? Due to it’s position in the southern hemisphere, New Zealand’s winter is our summer, so travelling there for a summer break means that it’ll be snow season down there!

It’s one hell of a long trip, though, so a one-week holiday there isn’t worth it. It’s advisable to take a full two-week trip if you’re going all that way, and consider breaking the journey up with a night in Singapore or some other stop on the way, just to break up the arduous flight.

However, once you get there, you’ll be treated to a dramatic landscape of extremes, from beautiful balmy beaches and coastlines that quickly rise up into towering snow-capped mountains in many parts of the country. This highly varied geography means a wide abundance of activities and adventure tourism, from watersports and mountaineering in the warmer months to snow-based activities in the winter, which we’re going to focus on here.

The ski season in New Zealand runs from June through to late October, and there are many ski zones on both the North and South Islands, from well-tended and popular resorts to smaller areas maintained by enthusiasts featuring only the basics like ski lifts or tow ropes. The drive out to the Anantara Qasr Al Sarab resort is a journey in itself. A two-hour

car ride takes you deep into the Emirati desert, and the rolling sand dunes in various hues of red, orange and grey increase in size until they tower over the narrow stretch of tarmac running through them, which is constantly under threat of being buried by them.Suddenly, a sign appears, and the car makes a turning on to another road that snakes its way up and over the colossal dunes, taking you even further into the unspoilt desert.

sky, with the colours of the sand dunes and the shadows

they cast changing along with it. Witness the dunes change from a pale orange-pink in the early morning to vivid orange and yellow in the bright midday light to deep orange and grey as the sun sets behind them. You’ll find yourself gazing out at them constantly as you wander around the hotel.

Desert AdventuresIt would be a shame to stay in the

middle of the desert and not head out into the wilderness for some fun! The hotel offers a range of activities designed to give you an enjoyable experience of the Liwa Desert, ranging from adventure activities like dune bashing, camel trekking, mountain biking and archery to more relaxing activities like the desert walk, the falcon show and desert yoga.

Our first activity was the dune bashing, an extremely popular tourist activity in the UAE, and an absolute must for anyone who hasn’t done it before.

You would not believe what these impressive vehicles are capable of in the skilled hands of the drivers, as they steer them up impossibly steep sand dunes and then, to your horror, drive them over even steeper drops on the other side. It’s a white knuckle ride, and not for the faint-hearted!

More sedate is the camel trek – the most exciting part is trying to stay on them when they move from sitting to standing! They then take you for a leisurely stroll to a desert rest stop, where you’ll be treated to a stunning sunset and refreshments before heading back. This trip makes for fantastic photos, and you won’t get a truer taste of a bygone era in the Arabian desert.

For the fitter readers among you, if you don’t mind an early start, then the desert walk is a unique experience – 5.30am sees you following a guide on foot off over the sand dunes into the middle of nowhere. Make sure you bring decent boots for this, unless you like your shoes filled with sand! It’s also no walk in the park – trekking on sand requires a lot more effort, as your feet sink in as you walk. it, you’ll be treated to a stunning sunrise in the vast, silent emptiness of the desert – a humbling experience you won’t forget in a hurry!

What Else?Even if you decide not to do any

activities for a day or two, and simply relax around the hotel, then you couldn’t find a nicer place to do so! The pool is a treat for both kids and adults, and in deference to the simmering desert heat, the staff regularly bring round complimentary water to keep you refreshed throughout the day.

The hotel’s various restaurants and bars round off the experience nicely. Whether it’s an idyllic breakfast on the outdoor terrace of the Al Waha restaurant gazing out at the sand dunes as the sun rises, or enjoying the cool desert breeze at night on the rooftop terrace of the Suhail Bar and Grill, where you can also enjoy cocktail sundowners in the late afternoon, or a delicious Mediterranean dinner in the Ghadeer poolside restaurant, you won’t be disappointed anywhere you decide to visit.

However, when having breakfast on the Al Waha terrace, watch out for the cheeky little birds hopping about nearby. Surprisingly fearless, you’ll find your breakfast has gone missing if you turn your head for more than a few seconds!

Following dinner, a romantic walk around the resort by starlight is a perfect way to round off an enchanting day, and any walk should take in the falaj path, meandering right down to the edge of the sands, where you can stand on the viewing platform and gaze up at the stars, and reflect on the beauty of the Liwa Desert.

In the Anantara Qasr Al Sarab resort, the Abu Dhabi government have sought to create the perfect example of Arabian romanticism – a flawless experience of the mystical desert. And in this aim, they have absolutely succeeded. No visitor to this resort will leave disappointed.

Hint: Transfer to the HotelDue to its remote desert location, it is a two-hour drive from Abu Dhabi airport to the hotel. The hotel will offer you its own limousine service, and while it is nice being greeted by a driver in arrivals with your name on a plaque and driven to the hotel in a Lexus ES350 or Lincoln Navigator, it does come at a hefty price. If you want to save yourself many hundreds of Dirhams, a local taxi will do the job just as well, if not in quite as much style. However, you will need to print out a map for them to follow (available on the hotel’s website), as most don’t know where it is! Watch out for the taxi stewards, who will offer you a “fixed price” taxi which is also much more expensive than the standard cab.

On the way to the Qasr Al Sarab resort, about an hour into the journey a surprising sight will greet you – a giant 1970’s Range Rover on stilts towering over the road! This signals the entrance to the Emirates National Auto Museum, located in a giant silver pyramid behind aforementioned giant Range Rover. This museum is actually the private car collection of the ‘Rainbow Sheikh’, Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nayhan, and one of the largest collections in the world at over 200 cars. It is also one of the most unusual – inside you will see a giant mobile home in the shape of Earth, a massive replica of a vintage Dodge Power Wagon as featured on an episode of Top Gear from the 1990s, and various cars of all shapes, sizes and colours, hence his nickname the Rainbow Sheikh. As you’ll never have reason to be out in this patch of desert again, you really should seize the opportunity to view this truly unique collection of automotive eccentricity.

The art of making movies is one that requires skill, determination and, above all, patience. Zara de Haldevang talks to Zeeshan Shah, the Fine Arts and Computer Graphics Program Coordinator at the NYIT, to find out more about their latest film and the talented movie-makers behind it.

Making Movies…

With more movies than ever being showcased all over the world, it

is no surprise that the younger generation aspires to follow in the footsteps of great names such as Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese.

Having taught at the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) since late 2006, Zeeshan initially joined as an Instructor for the School of Fine Arts and the Computer Graphics Department. Now the head of the department, Zeeshan has been part of a movie-making streak at the Institute.

The first film was called Paranorma back in 2010, and last year’s production was named Gilgamesh Pearl, and was a mini milestone for the students of NYIT.

“We wanted to do a film based on the history connected to Bahrain, while at the same time attract an audience of all ages, so we came up with a story of Gilgamesh Pearl” says Zeeshan.

The story revolves around three friends who are wrongly accused of the murder of Bahrain’s most

famous rapper, Hussam Fliperachi. After discovering a book with the names of several murder victims, the trio uncover the mystery and find out the legend of the Gilgamesh and his mythical pearl behind it all.

After the success of the first release, Zeeshan and the students were bitten by the movie-making bug. “I always want my students to do something challenging and different, something different to other universities in Bahrain, so I came up with a concept to do a film production where students will be working on a practical project and learn how real films productions are done,” explains Zeeshan.

So how do they get involved? “All the students take courses in their final year and implement everything they have learned in their previous courses. Silveraven, and showcases the work of five students. Every aspect of the film making was covered by the students themselves, including directing, script writing, visual effects, 3D modelling/animation and the media artwork.

Around 15 actors were hired from different universities, schools and colleges, but the majority of the actors were NYIT students, who all volunteered to act. The feature film is directed by Basma Al Mudaifa and Samar Karkar. However, both students were involved in the other forms of pre and post-production. Silveraven’s main character, Sky (played by Hala al Alaiwat) used to live on a planet called Ravena, parallel to planet Earth yet hidden under an invisible energy field. After a series of tragic events, Sky is evacuated by her best friend Michael to live a human life on planet earth. Maverick, an evil super villain determined to take over the ruling of the Ravena districts, eventually breaks the barriers around the planet and reaches Earth with the intention of destroying it. It is up to Sky and her friends to save the Universe and overcome the obstacles in their path.

And what are the hopes of the film? “As the project is a non-profit one, we are not expecting any kind of financial outcome, but the aim is that the students will get a great practical experience and some exposure out of it. It will also be a great benchmark for their CVs and future job prospects,” finished Zeeshan.

WHAT’S IT LIKE: Doe-eyed pop songstress Pixie Lott rose to fame with her #1 debut single, ‘Mama Do’, and maintained it with an equally successful follow-up single ‘Boys & Girls’, from her debut album Turn It Up. Both singles boasted catchy and relatively fresh sounds delivered in Lott’s super-smiley style that proved a potent recipe.

However, the buzz and magic that infused Lott’s first album sadly seems to be missing from the second, though it’s hard to pinpoint why. There is still a line-up of relatively fresh tracks that don’t recycle the usual cliches, but for some reason all of them fail to grab the attention the way her first two singles did.

‘All About Tonight’ does get close, with a dance-floor friendly backing melody and feelgood lyrics, and her bawdy rasp works well on ‘What Do You Take Me For’, with the obligatory rapper cameo in the shape of Pusha T, but all in all, not as good as the first.

WHAT’S IT LIKE: This is the first solo effort by Joe Jonas, of the Jonas Brothers, and as you would expect from a highly marketable pop star with a considerable amount of music industry weight behind him, Fastlife is a very polished affair, with the finest production talent that money can buy.

It is therefore a given that the album will boast songs that are chart-friendly, catchy and up-beat, and Fastlife certainly delivers in this regard. Opening track ‘All This Time’ oozes that feelgood factor, and ‘Fastlife’ brings the RnB touch. Dance music electro: Check. Timberlake-esque RnB flava: Check. Love-torn balladry: Check. The album literally ticks all the boxes as you name them - a perfect marketing ploy.

However, what sets apart a pop album in these highly competitive days is originality, which unfortunately this album somewhat predictably lacks.

WHAT’S IT LIKE: In what is Guetta’s most ambitious project to date, Nothing But The Beat boasts a frankly staggering line-up of collaborative artists that reads like a “who’s who” of current #1 hitmakers from the world of pop and urban music.

Just to make the point, we’re going to list some: Akon, Nikki Minaj, Taio Cruz, Flo Rida, Ludacris, Usher, (*takes a breath) Will.i.am, Snoop Dogg, Chris Brown, Lil’ Wayne, and so on, and so forth... In terms of mashing genres together, nobody does it better than Guetta (now THAT’s a tagline if ever we heard one!). Is it pop, is it dance, is it urban? NO, it’s David Guetta, and he’s riding the wave of superstardom like a world-class name-dropper.

In some places, the collaborations work well, for example with the Australian singer Sia, one of the lesser known names on the tracklist, on the rousing anthem ‘Titanium’. However, on others, it merely sounds like a DJ’s attempts to remix existing pop/hip-hop offerings, layering radio-friendly urban vocals over uplifting dance backing tracks, to mediocre effect.

While it’ll undoubtedly be a smash hit, with the tracks being overplayed on dance floors around the world, it is ultimately a bit hit and miss.

WHAT’S IT LIKE: After a three-year hiatus, brought on largely by difficulties that arose from conflicts between his two record labels, Geffen and Aftermath, former G-Unit member and West Coast rapper returns with this, his fifth studio album, and a sizeable 21 track-strong odyssey of tough, no-holds-barred, gritty rap music.

The conflicts which dragged production of this LP out for three years are evident in the lyrics of Game’s tracks, and the frustration and emotion add a tangible element to the rapper’s music.

What’s refreshing in these days where urban music is becoming increasingly mainstream is an artist who keeps it real - Game pulls no punches on The R.E.D. Album, and the lyrics are certainly NOT for kids (although thousands will undoubtedly buy the album). Game is in his element when he’s being the exact opposite of ‘radio-friendly’.

As the stories unfold, the connections between the two become more and more apparent, until Catherine begins to learn hidden truths about her own life that she never suspected.

While this sounds like a complicated feat of writing to pull off, Carey’s literary skills are such that he pulls it off well, making for a great novel.

However, it’s a very ambitious project to try to find a common thread running through the various psyches of Britain’s more eccentric, drug-addled and troubled rock stars that led to such great music being created, and it’s a project that Heylin ultimately fails at.

It is, therefore, something of an anti-climax, which is a shame. There are some great anecdotes and insights into these artistic minds, but there is also a gaping hole where a great underlying truth promises to be.

The most recent entrant onto the telecoms market in Bahrain is Greenisis, a new Wireless Broadband provider who claims to offer Bahrain’s first truly

unlimited Broadband packages. They opened their first retail outlet last month Bahrain Car Park Building in Central Manama on the ground floor, near Hardees. A second Greenishop is set to open in Bahrain City Centre next month.

While other internet providers in Bahrain claim to offer unlimited packages, the reality is that, under their Fair Usage Terms, after a certain download/upload threshold, the connection is ‘throttled’, meaning that the speed of the connection is limited until a new month begins.

SAMSUNG GALAXY BEAMONCE again, a technological development in the mobile phone industry has amazed us, as Samsung bring the fight to Apple with this latest incarnation of their impressive Galaxy phones – the Samsung Galaxy Beam.

So called because the phone can literally ‘beam’ a video onto a nearby wall, the Galaxy Beam incorporates the latest in compact projector technology to feature it’s very own video projector, built right into the slim design of the Galaxy!

While the concept itself sounds amazing, the important question is: does the reality live up to the dream? I.e. Can a projector so compact that it fits into a mobile project a picture of any kind of decent quality?

Well, for one thing, the lights need to be off. Unlike powerful portable projectors that can project a viewable picture in a brightly lit room, the Beam doesn’t work at all in bright spaces, chiefly because in order to do that it would need a bulb so powerful it would melt the phone! So, don’t have any illusions about carrying it into a meeting and conducting presentations on it.

However, if you’re with friends at home and would like to watch a movie, you can conceivably plonk it on the coffee table, turn out the lights, and watch away. It’ll throw a commendable 50-inch picture on a wall from two metres away, and

you can’t really argue with that on a phone that’s as slim and compact as most smartphones out there, and more so than some!

The phone itself is decent in its own right; it runs on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) which, while highly usable, is a little dated now with recent releases bringing more features. It does boast a 4-inch WVGA display, which is still bigger than an iPhone 4S but not as big as the Galaxy Nexus, and a 1GHz dual-core processor, which again is very decent, but not the best out there. There’s also a rear-facing 5MP Camera with flash, as well as a front camera for video calls.

One thing we will mention is the battery – while the 2,000mAh lithium is no slouch on its own, the projector will drain it completely after a mere three hours of use. Granted, few movies are longer than two hours, but expect to have to charge the Beam every time you watch a movie. This constant discharging and recharging will mean a very short lifespan for the battery in the long run if you use the projector a lot – which is kind of why you’d buy the phone in the first place, isn’t it?

SONY PERSONAL 3D VIEWERSONY recently unveiled their personal 3D viewer which comes on the wave of recent 3D releases in the world of home entertainment, and claims to offer an enhanced 3D viewing experience that sets it above those offered by 3D TVs.But is this really the case? The whole ‘headset’ concept is nothing new – the past is littered with the corpses of similar failed products dating all the way back to the Virtual Reality phase back in the late nineties, which ultimately failed.The problem back then is that the headsets were cumbersome, and while the technology was a gimmick, the crappy quality of the experience wore thin very fast, and once the initial awe wore off, nobody really cared enough to make it commercially viable.So now Sony resurrect the concept in an age where both compact and 3D technologies are at a stage where consistent use is viable, so does this new headset make it so?Certainly, the device is a lot more comfortable than the old devices were – after some adjustment, you can have it fitting snugly and comfortably to your head, and it’s light enough that your neck won’t get sore after five minutes of viewing.The 3D experience is also enhanced, thanks to the fact that rather than having to focus both eyes on the same screen using glasses, each eye has it’s own dedicated high-quality

OLED screen.

Therefore the unpleasant effects of stereoscopic video, like blurring, ghosting and eye strain, are greatly reduced. Sony has also optimized the integrated lenses to give a much wider viewing angle, up to 45 degrees, which serves to almost completely eliminate borders surrounding the images, and creating a more involving experience.However, there are drawbacks. First, they aren’t wireless, which means that you have to sit close to the DVD player or PlayStation to use them. Secondly, when playing on the PS3, you have to fumble around looking for things because you can’t see past your headset. Third, the 3D sound experience isn’t so pronounced on the headsets earphones as it would be with a full-on surround sound setup. Fourth, the almost sensory-deprivation-like experience of having the headset on can be a little overwhelming. Fifth, it’s a purely solitary experience – you can’t share your gaming experience with friends.Five major drawbacks on a device which costs this much (around $800 priced online) is really four too many. The device has HUGE potential, but we’ll wait to see how the kinks iron out in coming models.

Mitsubishi’s not having a great time of things at the moment. A strong Japanese

Yen and the obvious economic turmoil inflicted by the tsunami have resulted in price fluctuations, with the Pajero being a little highly priced at the moment.

However, does that mean that one of Mitsubishi’s strongest models is down and out? I really don’t think so. This is a car with a long history of off-road capability and reliability. It’s a car with an excellent reputation.

And, it’s a car with an outstanding motorsports history. Way back in 1983, the Pajero took part in the infamous Paris Dakar Rally for the first time. Only two years later, on its third attempt it took first place in its category. It went on to win its class no less than 15 times over the next three decades, making it the most successful vehicle ever to take part in the Dakar Rally.

Much of the research and development that went into the racing technology in the Dakar Rally, developed in partnership with Mitsubishi’s motorsports arm, Ralliart, made its way into the car

you see today, most notably in the traction control and suspension systems.

This is the fourth generation of the Pajero, which has been around since 2006, but for this year has had some minor tweaks to the styling, including bigger wheels. The biggest upgrade has been to the chassis, with an improved monocoque body and suspension improving rigidity and comfort.

We drove the top-spec 3.8l V6, with a 5-speed automatic transmission, which puts out

around 247hp and 329Nm of torque, making the Pajero no slouch. On the road, it pulls well, but doesn’t provide any surprises. Ride comfort is good, but it does feel every bit the large SUV it is in terms of handling.

Off the road is where the Pajero really shines, though. With Mitsubishi’s Super-Select 4WD II system, as well as an improved Active Stability and

Traction Control (ASTC) system, the Pajero makes light work of all but the most rugged terrain.

However, even ON the most rugged terrain, the Pajero can tackle most obstacles with a skilled hand (such as that of Ali Driver, of course!). The car will scramble and

Testament to Mitsubishi’s aims with this vehicle are the skid plates underneath, protecting the SUV’s underside during arduous off-roading, as well as a commendable ground clearance of almost nine inches.

Whilst comfortable, the interior of the Pajero has a distinctly utilitarian feel to it, despite the leather seats and Rockford sound system (which is very good, by the way, and does include the usual MP3 connectivity). It does also provide extremely good all-round visibility, with high windows and a very high driving position, giving you a commanding view of your surroundings – you almost feel like you’re sitting in an atrium! There are also three rows of seating which can easily accommodate seven adults.

To summarize, the Mitsubishi Pajero feels like the kind of car that scientists drive up mountains to study rock formations, or oil rig engineers drive out into the desert to remote wells. Safe, affordable to run, dependable and capable, it seems like a sensible choice for corporations to transport valued staff in.

However, you’ll definitely never see one in a rap video!

This is because despite its capability, functionality and motorsports pedigree, the Mitsubishi Pajero unfortunately lacks any glamour or desirability, and I think this is a crying shame. What I’d dearly like to see is for the brand to cash in on its respected history and come out swinging with a seriously sexy concept that would revitalise the model and inject some excitement.

So tell me, what is ‘the’ look for this summer?

The thing about fashion and hair these days is there is no one look that’s ‘in’ anymore. It does come along every year and a half or so when a celebrity like Victoria Beckham cuts her hair off then everyone wants to do it. And, to be honest, most women look towards the stars for fashion more than the runway, as to a degree it seems more real. They have a slightly more personal relationship with the celebrities through digital media whereas the models on the catwalk are little known these days apart from a few. Is this the season for the up or down look?

Really all lengths and textures are normally ‘in’ and it has to do with suitability to the individual’s hair and lifestyle. Also, unlike in the second half of the twentieth century, where each decade had a few signature looks based on urban subcultures, these days people could be sporting a different look from day to day depending on their wardrobe.Saying all this, generally its a feeling and texture that’s in across all the lengths, like this year, hair has been slicked off the face in a wet look or the hair is been made quite glossy. This goes whether it is a down style or up style, lots of ponytail variations are in, plus glossy finger waves.

And how about shades? Hair colour depends of course

WITH a new menu and a new chef, Fusions restaurant in the Gulf Hotel is renewing their assault on the Kingdom’s dining scene. Already well-known for its unique cuisine which has traditionally blended Western and Far Eastern cooking styles, the restaurant is now blending Western, Far Eastern AND Middle Eastern flavours in a menu that truly one of a kind!

If you haven’t yet visited Bahrain’s most well known Fusion restaurant, then the venue alone is worth a look. Located on the 6th floor of the hotel in a wing that juts out from the main building, the restaurant boasts lovely views of Juffair, the Grand Mosque and Al Fateh Corniche. Inside, a cosy, comfortable and inviting atmosphere makes it the ideal place for an intimate dinner with loved ones.

The new menu is packed full of delights, but we started with the Beef Tataki and the Open Lobster Ravioli. The Tataki is harissa-marinated seared beef tenderloin, truffled yakumi, and micro cress salad, in a sumac dressing. It’s a delicious and delicate dish for meat lovers, but only order it if you don’t mind your meat VERY rare!

dish featuring poached lobster, mussels and salmon ravioli in a crustacean bisque, layered with thin sheets of pasta. A must for seafood lovers!

As was the main course we ordered, the Sweet Butter Poached Lobster, with garlic-roasted tiger prawns in a creamy lobster broth, accompanied by a spinach and herb risotto. This is a delicious dish reminiscent of a lobster bisque, with very generous portions of prawns and big chunks of lobster – a lavish offering!

In addition to this, we also tried the Pan Roasted Venison Loin, with parsnip purée, confit banana shallot, and tapenade sautéed kailan, all in a cherry and Sarawak “poivrade” sauce. The venison is gamey and full-flavoured meat that die-hard carnivores such as ourselves will love, especially when eaten with the parsnip purée. You might wonder what the banana is doing in there, but don’t worry – it just gives a subtle flavour that complements the dish nicely, especially when combined with the sweetness of the cherry sauce. Delicious!

To finish, we sampled the Matcha Crème Brulee, which is a Green Tea crème brulee served with grapefruit

sorbet, if only because it sounded unusual. Despite this, it was very nice, with the tanginess of the sorbet balancing the creaminess of the brulee nicely.

What Fusions offers is a culinary adventure, where you’ll get to try combinations of styles and flavours that you’ll never have experienced before, and for anyone who considers themselves a food enthusiast, this is a good thing. Not everything might be to your tastes, but you’ll discover new things that most definitely are!

HOME to two well-known restaurants in the Kingdom, Mo Kan and Klouds, the K Hotel already has a pretty decent reputation for food. Even when taking a look at the offers this May, your mouths will be left watering at the very thought.

First up we have Sushi lunch and dinner on a Saturday where you can get a whopping 50% off ALL sushi items. So, you can go and eat a week’s worth and only pay half the price. If you are more of a meat fan, then Mo Kan is hosting a Dim Sum evening from Sunday to Wednesday, where two people can tuck into a platter of 20 pieces for just BD9.8 per dish.

If weekdays are too busy for you then the Brunch on Fridays at Klouds is your best bet. For BD19.5 per person, enjoy a delish buffet and unlimited drinks - yes unlimited we say!

SET in the heart of Adliyah is this gem – the Meat Company. Being one of the priciest restaurants in town, it’s probably not a good spot if you’re looking for a cheap bite to eat, but this one is definitely worth a visit if you are looking to treat that special someone or celebrate a special occasion.

This month however, the Meat Co has a special Meaty Feast lunch menu. For just BD11.5 each, you can have a two-course meal. Starters include the choice between soup of the day, bruschetta, Caesar salad or a rocket and apple walnut salad. Main course is a selection from Flame Grilled South African fillet, ribs and rump, a mushroom and Swiss cheese burger or prime cuts from a butcher’s skewer.

Every meal is accompanied by a soft drink and a tea or coffee and the offer is valid from 12.30 - 5pm, Sunday to Wednesdays.

WHEN you think of the seaside, there are two things that spring to mind – seafood and scrumptious drinks. Well at the Sofitel you can have it all! La Mer, one of the best seafood restaurants on the island, is the perfect spot for the weekend this month. Every Saturday you can sit overlooking the glittering sea and indulge in some fresh fish, carefully prepared and presented by the head chef. Open from 12.30-4pm, this spot has private parking and access as well as a huge international wine selection. When the stress of the week is over and you can finally treat yourselves, La Mer should be your ideal destination. You can even head down to the Lagoon pool bar and enjoy some light refreshments, cheeky or soft, and some fresh fruit as well. Poolside there are underwater stools and plenty of loungers for you to top up that fading tan! If you can’t afford to jet off this May, the Sofitel is your next best option. The bar is open from 9am so get in early to secure your spot in the sunshine.

TUCKED away in the Block 338 district is this little individual joint, designed with a fresh, chateaux-style interior, comfortable lounge and world-class menu. The choice of food is inspired by the flavours of the French and Spanish, with carefully selected labels of delicious bottles of international wines. Now Camelot isn’t just for popping in for a quick coffee or drink; this restaurant is an ideal place to find that little extra magic. Every Monday you can enjoy unlimited food and drinks at the ‘Moules et Frites’ Night for just BD22 per head.From 9pm onwards, you can also catch the Acoustic Duo of James and Jo, whose interview is featured earlier on in this issue (see page 14). Sometimes nothing is better than a spot of music from some great entertainers with a yummy meal in front of you.

Chef Stefano lives and breathes Italian food. This is even to the extent that he doesn’t

really have much time for other cuisines. It’s what he loves, and what he is passionate about, and this shows in the food he prepares.

Some might say that a chef should be open to all cuisines and culinary styles, but in this case we say, “Stay true to your own convictions”… or maybe it’s “Practice what you preach”… or perhaps “Live by the sword”…

Whatever we mean, Chef Stefano embodies that principle. His dishes are simple, and yet there is a focus on individual flavours and visual aesthetics. He doesn’t like to mess around with the classic tenets of Italian cooking too much, but he does like to take the concepts to a higher level in his flavours and presentation.

“In Italian cooking it’s important to keep the rustic taste. It’s tradition,” says Stefano. “It’s also important to be able to taste all the different flavours in the cooking – that’s what Italian food is all about.”

As with other chefs we’ve dined with, Stefano seems to have that essential trait that all great chefs must have to be successful: an overriding passion for the ingredients they’re using and the food they’re cooking. He agrees unequivocally. “Passion is the main ingredient to be successful as a chef. If you don’t have the passion, you might as well go and do a different job!”

Stefano was born and raised in Northern Italy, and began his training in the culinary arts in Domodossola, in the region of Piedmont in the foothills of the Italian Alps, near the Swiss border. “There the cheeses are very good, and the bread is very good. You work with cep mushrooms a lot,

when it’s in season, berries, nettles, we make a nettle gnocchi, and a ravioli filled with nettles, ricotta, chestnuts, all things from the ground, local ingredients,” recalls Stefano.

He kicks off the culinary experience with a very simple, and very Italian entrée – Scachatta. This is thin bread much like a pizza base, sprinkled with olive oil, salt, fresh thyme, oregano and put in the oven. We had it both on its own and with a Bruschetta topping of garlic, basil, tomato and olive oil. In true traditional Italian style, it is

very simple and rustic, but also very aromatic and tasty. It’s an excellent entrée – not too heavy, but just enough to whet the appetite.

As he cooks, and we eat, Stefano tells us about Fiamma restaurant. “I am very happy with what we’ve done with this place. When we came it was completely new, and we didn’t have any regular clientele, so we had to start from the very beginning. Now we have regulars, sometimes the same table coming in two or three times a week, which is very nice to see.”

He also has big plans for the open kitchen within the restaurant itself, which is currently only used during the hotel’s Friday brunch. “It’s great having this kitchen outside, I like it! I’d like to organise some cooking lessons here, because you have a nice cooking area with the stools on the other side, where people can watch and take notes. It’s interesting for people who are interested in food, because they are curious, and want to see what is going on behind the scenes, and learn some things.”

Next comes a deliciously rich and creamy risotto with scampi and lemon zest, served in an edible baked Parmesan tray. “My chef taught me that everything you put on your plate should be edible, all the decorations, everything. Some cuisines put flowers, or tinfoil, but I don’t believe in this,” says Stefano.

The risotto isn’t served al dente, but all’onda, which is how it is traditionally served in Italy. All’onda means “like a wave”, because when you tilt the plate, the risotto moves

in waves.After this came a very unusual

dish that Stefano learned during the very early stages of his career, in Northern Italy, which features tagliatelle pasta cooked risotto-style! “This recipe I learned from the chef there, and it sticks in my mind, because normally you boil pasta, but with this one you cook the tagliatelle like you cook risotto, slowly cooked in the sauce of the dish. And you use dried pasta, gradually adding stock and the pasta retains all the different flavours,” explains Stefano. “This dish has stayed in my mind for all these years, because it’s so unusual to see pasta cooked in this way, and it’s one of the first things I learned.”

Following this came beef fillet tenderloin prepared in a traditional Italian way, sliced with rocket salad with balsamic and Parmesan shavings. “Slicing the beef tenderises it, because it breaks all the fibres, and I think it’s one of the best Italian meat dishes you can get,” explains Stefano.

And finally, sea bass with mashed potato, king crab and red pepper sauce. With a contented sigh we sat back to relax and let the extremely enjoyable meal settle. This was some of the best Italian food that any of us had ever had, and proves the theory that sometimes the simplest ideas are the best! “Italian cuisine is based on simplicity, but using the best ingredients cooked well to make the good flavours,” finished Stefano.

THERE are two people to look out for this May, and you will find them at Mezzaluna. The first is Hinda Hicks, a Tunisian-born singer, who now has four albums under her belt! Starting off in a band called ‘Fabulous Dug’ at the age of 15, she moved on to performing at functions across London and then landed herself a record deal with Island Records.

Having had a fair few setbacks throughout her career, in spite of her talent she has failed to break through to mainstream success, largely due to her underground jazzy sound.

Hinda started off her album library with Hinda, a Jazz Funk/Soul collection of songs. After its release, she went on to record Everything To Me, and Still Doing My Thing, the first touching base with both Blues and Hip Hop, and the latter leaning more towards the Hip Hop vibe. Her latest album is “Journeys”, an electric tale of her experiences in life as well as a showcase of her debut as a producer as well as a songwriter.

Despite the allure of mainstream success and fame, Hicks has never given in to industry pressure and gone ‘pop’, and for that she deserves credit. She stays true to her musical ideals, and for that passion alone, she is worth the watch!

Primarily he was involved in organising underground Hip Hop and Hip House events in the Netherlands, but he realised his perfect career when discovering the sounds of acid-house in 1992. Two years later, Richard moved to Amsterdam to pursue his new dream job.

So where can you catch Richard now? Well since his arrival in the ‘Dam, this DJ’s life has been transformed somewhat considerably. Now with a secured residency in the country’s top club, ‘Club 11’, this guy is known for his energetic spinning of deep house, tech house and funky-techno. He is now one of the biggest names in the Dutch electronic music scene and has played all over the world: Mexico, Thailand, the US and now Bahrain. Lucky us!

And how exactly? Well, this DJ lyrically laces beats with unique metaphors and his love for the good life. By throwing in pop, hip-hop and R&B, Muniklip is known for bringing genius creativity and flow to any track.

Otherwise known as ‘The Lyrical Don Juan of the South”, Muniklip is an independent recording artist and CEO of Single R Records. Since hitting the scene, Muniklip has developed a swagger of his own by becoming his own audio engineer, beat producer, video editor, photo retouch specialist and website designer (so pretty talented then?!). On every show, this guy tries to push his creative flare to the brink.

Although he has been expanding his horizons across the Midwest, it is his live shows and radio interviews that generate the most enthusiastic reviews. His talent is very much underrated, so it’s about time that we got to see him live!

Playing at this event is a fantastic line-up of local DJ talent, which comprises Damian D’Costa, DJ Huss, DJ Gazi, and DJ Liam. Each of them is well known and highly respected in Bahrain’s club scene, with a combined experience of many years giving Bahrain’s partygoers the full benefit of their turntable skills.

Taking place around the Dragon Hotel’s pool terrace overlooking the calm Amwaj waters, you won’t find a more idyllic setting for an outdoor pool party! SINCE this place opened, especially after all the controversy with the noise levels and people (mainly the fun-police) complaining about the supposed “lack of sleep” (despite the FACT that no residences are nearby), this has to be one of the best places to go for a decent night out on the island.

And a tip for all the guys out there: You can get free entrance if you grab a girl and go as a couple!

So what is in store this month? Well, May 25 sees the return of WTF II (we hope you don’t need help interpreting that). Switch on your party mode and feel the musical vibe with the sounds of DJ Sandy Rivera.

Over the past few years, Sandy has managed to maintain a pretty intimidating, yet simultaneously impressive, production catalogue, many of which have found their home on Defected Records. Ones worthy of a mention are ‘Freak’, ‘Hide U’ and ‘Can’t Stop’ all under the name of Sandy Rivera. Whereas others like ‘Take Me Back’ and ‘I Need You To Love Me’ are examples of this DJ reverting back to his Kings of Tomorrow moniker [DASH] both tracks were hailed as a return to the heyday of vocal house music.

Now remember, 360-ers have to be dressed the part to be allowed entrance. So ladies, something glamorous, and guys, no t-shirts, you need a collar, and no trainers as they will turn you away point blank.

Get your dancing shoes on and make sure you have plenty of drinking practice beforehand, unless you want to spend half your income on a night out. Some would argue that it’s worth it though…

particularly difficult to stay healthy whilst on overseas business trips. The unnatural experience of jetting around the globe messes up our natural circadian rhythm. You can dress a successful businessman up in a suit but like every animal on this planet, they need to be close to nature to stay healthy. A tiger is a magnificent animal but place them in a zoo and they soon become sick and depressed. Humans are no different.

On business trips we can be exposed to late night meetings, planes full of garbage food and poor air quality and, worst of all, we are away from our family. All these components can have a negative effect on our health. These components can be minimized by prioritizing one’s health and planning ahead. Follow these three simple steps below to ensure you travel well on your business trips overseas:

1. Get at least one hour of sun exposure every day. This will ensure you get some much-needed Vitamin D and reduce the feeling of “cabin fever”. Vitamin D is very important to maintain high immunity and prevent us from getting sick.

2. Pack your own food for the plane. The garbage that they provide on planes today is nothing short of disgraceful. That highly processed cheese roll is not fit for your body, nor is the chocolate bar or even the fake “juice” drink. Plan ahead with a light snack of light natural foods. An example could include an apple, a few macadamia nuts and some biltong (jerky).

3. Stay hydrated. Keep a bottle of water with you to stay hydrated. Air conditioning, intense heat and the recycled plane air can leave us dry and sick. Avoid excessive caffeine consumption too as diuretics also lead to further water loss.

THE “Awakening Your Inner Power and Potential” conference was held between the 18th and the 21st of April this year. Since diseases like high blood pressure and many other diseases are related to stress, one could possibly expect to see one’s health taking a turn for the better.
