We’ve been talking a lot about food these past few months, and rightly so, as the 6th annual Citi FACT Dining Awards are approach and the who’s who of the F&B and hospitality world get ready for an evening of celebration. In Bahrain, we’re particularly spoilt with really great

food and so many cuisines. Whether it’s Japanese, Indian, Arabic, Italian, a good steak or a yummy afternoon tea, there really isn’t anything that foodies can’t find here. However, there is one big gaping hole in the food market that makes us wonder why it’s taken so long for someone to fill it – the food truck scene. Whereas many of our neighbouring countries have excelled in this area, this type of food business hasn’t quite caught on in Bahrain… until now, as that’s all about to change. As you may have noticed on the cover – there’s a new foodie player coming to town this month, and we have the exclusive scoop on p29. Planet Caravan is the brainchild of a local man with a passion for creating a new and memorable dining experience for the people of Bahrain. It’s cool, catchy and tipped to be a foodie hit for the winter season!Staying on the road to eating, FACT took to the streets of Bahrain to find you the best hole-in-the-wall style grub for mere fils (p39). From tikka to tom yum, cookies and kunafa, it’s your turn to get inspired, jump in the car and check out our recommendations on your very own street food tour. Why not challenge yourself and see how many different things you can eat for less than BD5? Tweet us your favourite hidden foodie gems @FACTBahrain, we’re always up for trying something new!To top all that off, we also feed your hunger for arts, fashion, travel, tech, motoring and the best happenings this month! Bahrain’s ever-thriving arts scene has some brilliant exhibitions for all you creative connoisseurs. FACT caught up with Tejbir Singh to learn more about his exhibition Sporting Lines, currently on display at InTouch Gallery (p43). There’s a round up of all the best autumn winter destinations you should visit (p65); a test drive of the new Land Rover Discovery Sport (p79); and the hottest AW15 collections and trends (p89) - there’s something for everyone. It’s almost time to put the Christmas carols on repeat and get in the festive spirit. It’s only going to get busier in the FACT office, but with a little bit of Jingle Bell Rock and plenty of good cheer, we wouldn’t have it any other way!☺

Hi Christopher! For those who are not familiar with AntiGravity Aerial Yoga – tell us five important elements about it...ANYONE CAN DO IT: Anyone who has a fitness regime, no matter their level can do it, provided their mind is open. EASY INVERSIONS: The greatest unique physical advantage (that no other technique can boast) is zero-compression inversions from the base of the spine. Hanging upside down not only decompresses the spinal column, but also refreshes the circulatory system, the endocrine system and releases endorphins (aka happy hormones). SYSTEMS REFRESHED: Everyone leaves feeling lighter. Your body systems are refreshed, releasing neurotransmitters from the brain (which combat depression). Muscle cells have grown and lengthened, joints are hydrated and everyone has had at least one good laugh.BODY RESHAPED: Since we are working in multiple planes of motion, the entire body gets worked and it is the very best core workout you can get.THE FUN FACTOR: AntiGravity techniques are exploding all over the world because they invoke levity! Why suffer through tedious reps when you can have the same or better results while playfully exploring new movements swinging in a hammock?

The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay announces an exciting new addition

to its health and wellbeing offering; AntiGravity Aerial Yoga. FACT talks to the founder of this groundbreaking yoga

technique, Christopher Harrison, to learn more…

AntiGravity Aerial Yoga

Tell us about the idea and inspiration behind AntiGravity Aerial Yoga…I am an award-winning Broadway aerial choreographer with America’s premier acrobatic performance company called AntiGravity (founded in 1991). I originally invented the silk hammock apparatus for the sake of creating beauty in the air. We discovered the magical healing to our compression injuries while doing inversions on the hammock during rehearsals. I put one up into my house and let go of my chiropractor. After healing my own body I put a Harrison AntiGravity Hammock into my mother’s house to help her with her back pain. ➻

CHECK IT OUT

People of all fitness levels can enjoy

AntiGravity Aerial Yoga provided one

can do at least three sit-ups, hold

a plank for 15 seconds and has an

open mind.

GO: Call 17115000 or email [email protected], to be one of the f irst to try the new AntiGravity Yoga at the Spa at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay. Visit www.antigravity.com for more information.

She is exercise phobic and overweight with two reconstructed hips. She became the guinea pig. I realized that if she can do it, anyone could. Witnessing her being healed from years of pain I guess you could say, “I heard my calling”. It took healing my mother to get the hard work done of codifying it into a technique.

Explain how and why AntiGravity Aerial Yoga is beneficial for the mind and body...ANTIAGING: We are a society that treasures youth. You are only as young as your spine is flexible and your mind is open. When you open up space in the body, you open up space in the mind. AntiGravity is therefore like taking a sip from the fountain of youth!BACK PAIN RELIEF: When you perform a Zero-Compression inversion you get the kinks out of your back and hydrate your vertebral discs, which are like sponges and dry as we age. We have thousands of case studies of people who avoided surgery and got off pain meds thanks to AntiGravity Training.HAPPY HORMONE COCKTAIL: When you tip your body upside down you refresh all the bodily systems; releasing happy hormones (serotonin, endorphins, oxytocin), and giving fresh blood to the brain (thereby releasing neurotransmitters), which is addictive.DECOMPRESSION: If your workout is only compression based, your machine is bound to break. A balanced fitness routine includes decompression in an equal amount to compression, lengthening as well as strengthening the muscles, mobilizing as well as tightening the joints. This goes for both the body and the mind. In Christopher Harrison’s AntiGravity we pursue excellence not perfection and choose fun over seriousness.MENTAL BENEFITS: When you move your body freely in all directions of open space you create new synaptic connections and neural pathways that increase the neuroplasticity of your brain (your ability to learn). Everyone leaves class having challenged themselves and accomplished something new, thereby gaining a new sense of self-confidence. This will spill over into your life. Furthermore, when we integrate the body and mind through

physical practice, we reconnect with our true self, our spirit. This helps support our coping mechanisms and we function more optimally.

Why did you choose the Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay as a place where AntiGravity Aerial Yoga can be experienced? The Four Seasons and AntiGravity share in the common values of Quality and Originality. They’ve been the perfect partners for introducing AntiGravity in new territories around the globe. The Four Seasons Spa in Bahrain is one of the largest in their entire network and has terrific instructors whom I personally trained.

How fit do you have to be for AntiGravity Aerial Yoga - is it more mental or physical?People of all fitness levels can enjoy AntiGravity Aerial Yoga provided one can do at least three sit-ups, hold a plank for 15 seconds and has an open mind. There are different classes and courses, so find the class that is right for you. An AntiGravity Yoga class is a lot like the path of life. It starts with a meditation inside the Womb and then goes immediately into the First Inversion. We enter the world upside down and we start class upside down. We then go through our sun salutation, our strength and flexibility, our swinging and another inversion before finishing in the corpse pose (which we call cocoon) while levitating in our Harrison AntiGravity Hammock. The process reconnects body and mind and reminds us of whom we really are without all the mental trappings of society and pains of the flesh. All AntiGravity Techniques reconnect the mind and body, so although it is physical in nature, one leaves with their mind refreshed, feeling more connected to their true self. ✤

After three successful Double-Tap galleries, curator duo Stafford and Sharabi promise to close this year’s series in true beauty! Themed Here and Now, the last Double-Tap presents imagery collected from artists via instagram. The brief was simple: express your immediate reaction to the statement Here and Now. Artists of all ages, backgrounds and nationalities were invited to post images on instagram of as many works as they wanted in any medium they desire, simply ensuring that they include the hashtag #malja_hereandnow and a brief description of their work. “We thought oF something neW, simPle and exciting... the name Planet caravan reFlects our vision to Bring excePtional Food as iF it Was out oF this World.”

abdulla Alabsi is already well acquainted with the dining community in Bahrain and their wants and needs. He is the brainchild behind two popular

food brands, Blaze Burgers and il Capo – the New York-style pizza place – and now, he’s filling in a huge gap in the food market with Planet Caravan – Bahrain’s first airstream-cum-moving restaurant. Abdulla explains: “Airstreams are luxury trailers recognised by the distinctive shape of their rounded aluminium bodies which dates back to the 1930s.“We love those retro airstream trailers, so we decided to make a food truck based on them. However, instead of getting a ready-to-use airstream food truck, we decided to build one from scratch, something that will materialise our vision of the ultimate food truck,” he adds. The result; Planet Caravan, a 1972 Airstream Safari, and the first fully-customised food truck in the GCC. Inspiration for the concept of Planet Caravan came from a futuristic, out-of-this-world theme – much like what customers can expect from the incredible food that will be served on the go. “We thought of something new, simple and exciting,” Abdulla says. “The name Planet Caravan reflects our vision to bring exceptional food as if it was out of this world. When Planet Caravan stations at a location it transfers the environment into a dining hub.”From start to finish, that is, from the vision to the complete product, the process of getting Planet Caravan perfect has taken around 18 months. What has kept Abdulla going throughout this time? “There is nothing like this in Bahrain,” he says. “This is a state-of-the-art food caravan, manufactured in upstate New York. We took a 1970’s airstream trailer

and gave it a total makeover with all the latest gadgets and equipment to modernise it like nothing you’ve seen before. Planet Caravan will present its audience with true gourmet food rather than being just a simple fast food truck,” Abdulla continues. “The way we imagined the final result is what pushed us to keep going toward achieving it.” Planet Caravan came into being with the help of its manufacturer Nomad Airstream, a company based out of Plattsburgh in upstate New York, and one that has customised some truly amazing airstream trailers for everyone from Madonna to the world’s leading CEOs, as well as small businesses like hair salons and pop up shops, and even personal requests like bowling alleys and a cigar lounge, amongst many more BIG ideas. ➻

“also the size oF the Kitchen is narroW on an airstream, so We had to WorK on an oPtimal layout to Fit all the equiPment. even getting the right signBoard Was a challenge...”

Abdulla has been in constant communication with the Nomad team over Skype, as well as visiting the site a number of times to check on the project. “We’ve faced various challenges along the way,” he admits. “First was the fact that we need to build a European standard truck in the US, which took the manufacturer a serious amount of effort to change, due to various reasons.

“Also the size of the kitchen is narrow on an airstream, so we had to work on an optimal layout to fit all the equipment. Even getting the right signboard was a challenge and we found a new technology in California that allows us to install a paper-thin signboard on the trailer body,” Abdulla reveals.

Planet Caravan will be open for business throughout the winter season in Bahrain, and Abdulla is taking all precautions to making sure that it operates as smoothly as possible. “We are having representatives from the manufacturer coming all the way from the US to give technical training to our staff on how to operate the truck,” he says.

“The foodies in Bahrain actively seek new places and new experiences and know how to find them. We want to give foodies in Bahrain what they deserve, an exceptional dining experience.” ✤

located in Plattsburgh, New York, Nomad’s lot is filled with an entire range of airstream models, with different trailers and layouts, ready for commercial customisation and

company branding. From celebrities like Madonna, to big-time founders and execs, as well as companies like Dell and Vanity Fair, Nomad has worked on projects for world-famous organisations as well as small businesses and personal use.

No task is too much for the Nomad team and, for that, they have one man to thank – Steven Clement – President of Nomad Airstream and all-round good guy. Steven and his team have been transforming modest travel trailers into fully-fledged marketing machines, and they’re doing it so well that it’s even paved way for a potential reality TV show following Nomad’s mindblowing projects.

Over a Skype interview, we were given an exclusive look at the one and only Planet Caravan airstream, whilst Steven shared more about the project. “What Abdulla bought was a 1972 airstream which we took and we stretched,” Steven reveals. “It was 24 feet and we stretched it to 26, plus we added on a bigger bumper to put a generator on the back.

“We restored it completely; new axels, new frame, new flooring, and new wiring,” he says. “When we talked to Abdulla, his idea was to have something futuristic with a 1950s look – an American icon that was very polished like a mirror. This is where the aluminum works well, and we added a few twists.”

The airstream in question is definitely impressive as Steven shows us around. Worktops are stainless steel, the flooring is a slick red and everything is shielded with plastic covers and protectors to keep it in

nomad airstream

pristine shape for the big reveal in Bahrain. As for those twists that Steven was

talking about – there’s a fantastic electroluminescence light which is used for the logo; there’s an electronic menu board to give the food caravan a nice pop of colour and a modern touch; plus, the guys at Nomad put some aluminum rock guards on the sides which give the caravan a very 50s look and at the same time these have LED lights in the back so they’ll change colours.

“This unit is going to have the wow factor,” Steven says, excitedly. So, we want to know what the biggest challenges were with making Planet Caravan happen.

“I would say that it was for my guys to learn about 50 hertz and 230 volts – because we work here, in America, with 110,” Steven explains. “It wasn’t a difficulty, it was more a problem of the distributors giving us the material.

“It was very complicated and it took us weeks and weeks – I think we lost eight weeks along the way just for that. It was a challenge doing, for the first time, 50 hertz, 230 volts but I think we handled it very well,” he adds.

We’re intrigued to know how much it costs for a project of this scale, especially as so much thought and effort has been put into the whole concept. “The biggest thing with selling a project like this is not understanding the whole cost,” Steven admits. “It is expensive, BUT the return investment on an airstream is very attractive, they’re solid and reliable.

“We do a quality product – a regular food trailer will go anywhere between fifty and seventy five thousand – and an airstream, you’re looking at more from one hundred and fifty to two hundred thousand dollars.” ✤

Sporting

LineSThis month we talk to Tejbir Singh, an architect by trade but an artist by passion, who has applied his unique professional experience of pencilling structures to his creative endeavours, creating visually

dramatic sketches. FACT’s Tony Sidgwick learns more…

“The world around me conTinues To inspire me. iT varies from naTure To humans To heriTage, as well as a deep desire To produce someThing unique, memorable and

saTisfying. also, arT is a parT of me. if i do noT indulge in iT, i feel a kind of a void – as if someThing in me is missing.”

UNTIL EARLY DECEMBER, the InTouch Gallery, within the InTouch Chiropractic Spine Centre is playing host to an exhibition entitled Sporting Lines, by artist Tejbir Singh. In keeping with the centre’s speciality in Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation, the collection boasts artworks depicting lively sports scenes, all hand-drawn in pen, ink and pastels.

Being a sports lover, Tejbir could not resist the temptation of doing a series of drawings from sports practiced and played in Bahrain as well as some International games. These drawings show specific action snapshots from sports like football, basketball, volleyball, handball, tennis, cricket, hockey, ice hockey, Thai boxing, horse riding etc.

“I’ve always been fond of sports but sports art is something new for me,” Tejbir says. “But

when my curator, Frances, suggested this topic since the gallery is in a clinic that treats sports persons, I thought I would give it a try.”

An architect by profession, Tejbir has been working with leading consultancies in Bahrain since 1998. He has been drawing since a very young age since, his creative side was inspired by a teacher at school. “I’ve been sketching and drawing since I was a kid, it was always a part of me. I have not formally studied art, but I had a great art teacher in school who started me on oils pretty early and I learnt more of water colours and sketching in Architecture college, but apart from that I learnt very much on my own,” he says.

Since then, he has focused mostly on depicting historical buildings, houses and cultural sites in Bahrain. ➻

“During the last couple of years, as a result of certain architectural projects in Muharraq, I have been drawn even more towards the heritage of this island and have tried to capture them in a series of pen and ink drawings, a medium I use extensively in architectural presentations, with touches of colour

from water colours, pastels and so on. The theme basically is The streets of Muharraq.”

Quite a few of the scenes feature the fascinating co-existence and juxtaposition of the traditional and modern archetypes present in Bahrain; the old and the new indicative of the passage of time, within one single viewpoint.

“As an extension of this I have carried on and started working on some similar themes in Manama also and aim to cover other areas like Khamis and Riffa,” Tejbir shares. ➻

“The current works I am doing are more towards realism with touches of impressionism. The architect in me does come through in the details and the use of mediums like sketch pens. But I do dabble in abstracts also on occasion.”

It ’s not just the architecture in Bahrain that has inspired Tejbir’s creative side, but the country as a whole, in which the thriving arts scene has always nurtured those with creative ambitions. However, though it faltered somewhat in recent years, it ’s currently experiencing a bit of a renaissance, as Tejbir explains.

“The arts scene here is pretty active, and I think Bahrainis themselves are quite artistic by nature. However while there were more options for semi professional and amateur artists to showcase their works a few years earlier, there are lesser places now,” he says. “Thankfully places like In Touch and Malja have sprung up recently!”

However, finding a place to showcase his works hasn’t been Tejbir’s only challenge. He tells us: “Another struggle has been in the form of overzealous security persons in certain localities like Amwaj, who treat sketching as a security threat. I had my sketch book taken away once!” ➻

BiG Screen

Director: Sam Mendescast: Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz, Monica Belluci

Director: Francis Lawrencecast: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth.

Why it’s Worth Watching?Yes! Another James Bond film is out this month and we’re beyond excited about the next big screen spy saga, even more so because Sam Mendes is at the helm once again. If you’ve seen the trailer and sneak peeks then, as always, you know that audiences can expect plenty of action-packed scenes, high-tech toys, new Bond babes, villains, and, cars! In fact, Bond (Daniel Craig) will be driving a custom Aston martin DB10 in the film – only 10 of the DB10 models were made! When a popular franchise like James Bond reaches this level of stardom, and age, the sceptics will, of course, be out in full force. They’ll be able to list their Bond favourites and flops, very easily. But, thankfully, Sam Mendes’ 50th anniversary blockbuster Skyfall was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews, so we’re hoping that Spectre will follow suit. If anything, this is likely going to be Daniel Craig’s last stint as 007, so there’s no doubt that he’ll want to go out with a bang. Surely, we’ll get the actor’s best Bond performance to date, right? Let’s wait and see!

spectreThe Hunger Games Mockingjay: Part 2

What’s i t about: there’s a new sinister organisation in town by the name of Spectre, which sends Bond on a trail to uncover its secrets, following a cryptic message from the spy’s past. Meanwhile, M is facing a battle of her own as she fights the political forces to keep the secret service alive. What is Spectre? and, how far will Bond have to go, to reveal the terrible truth?

What’s it about:it’s time for President Snow and the autocratic Capitol to face the wrath of Katniss Everdeen and district 13. it’s a full-on revolution as the “Mockingjay” and her freedom fighters head to the capitol.

Why it’s Worth Watching? This is what we’ve been waiting for. Every Hunger Games film has led up to this. It’s time for Katniss ( Jennifer Lawrence) and co. to fight the cruel capitol and get justice for every district that has been destroyed by President Snow and his puppets. There are so many questions to address – what’s going to happen to Peter ( Josh Hutcherson); will President Snow get what’s coming to him; what’s in store for Katniss… let’s hope we get all the answers we’ve been waiting for! There are rumours that more films might be lined up for the franchise (fingers crossed!) so there’s a good chance that we might be left with another cliffhanger…

FullY Booked

The New York Times Bestselling Author, Anthony Marra, is back with The Tsar of Love and Techno; a collection of short stories that intertwine to make for a compelling, emotional and at times comical read. The setting is post-soviet society and compromises of three characters, a soldier, a ballerina and a space museum manager, all of whom are connected through art. It’s an incredibly moving collection of stories that is most certainly going to bring you to tears, but the fact that it is so true to life, with both it’s triumphs and tragedies, is what makes this book so touching and such a fantastic read, sure to stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page.

Sophia Amoruso could be named as a modern day Superwoman, she’s determined, driven and definitely not what you’d expect from a CEO. Now the founder and CEO of Nasty Gal, she was once a dumpster diving, hitch-hiking, petty theft committing teen who wasn’t one for sticking to the rules, something that she’s translated into her business life. In this book she describes the struggles she went through to make her dream job come to life, as well as giving some tough truths and straightforward words of advice for anyone wishing to do this same, but above all, she shows that with some seriously hard work and knowing which rules to follow and when, nothing is impossible.

Ellie Goulding had set the bar pretty high with her 2012 album, Halcyon, so we were expecting big things from her when it came to Delirium. The first track released from the album happened to feature in one of the most anticipated films of the year, Fifty Shades of Grey. Love Me Like You Do featured much of Ellie’s traditional, dreamy tones matched with upbeat vibes, easing us nicely into her upcoming album. Rumoured to be a clap-back to Ed Sheeran’s “Don’t”, On My Mind plays with plenty of sounds, making it a definite favourite from the album as well as a great throwback to earlier songs that gave Ellie her edge. The lyrics give it a hip-hop vibe whilst the guitar riffs and electro-beats combine to give a brilliantly catchy and infectious sound that’s bound to stick with you from the first listen. Something In The Way You Move gives the album the perfect injection of Pop, it’s certain to be a huge hit in the clubs but equally is the perfect song to blast on your journey to work to get you pumped for the day. Delirium is the perfect match of dreamy love songs and upbeat, empowering anthems but is it enough to rival her previous offerings? Not quite, but still a brilliant listen.

5 Seconds of Summer are the alternative boy

band that are reviving the 00’s Pop Punk fever and

winning the hearts of teens across the globe. Despite

often being compared to One Direction, they remind

us more of the likes of early Blink 182, Fall Out Boy

and Paramore, giving us catchy tunes with heavy

guitar riffs and fun, truth-bearing lyrics. She’s Kinda

Hot encapsulates Pop Punk perfectly with its matter-

of-fact lyrics and punchy guitar riffs. Add to that, that

every teen on the planet can relate to it and you’ve

got a perfect teen angst anthem. Jet Black Heart

brings all the feels, with soulful lyrics, thick drumbeats

and a powerful chorus; it’s the perfect song to belt

out when you’re feeling a little low. There isn’t one

song on this album that won’t make you want to

sing along, so yes, this album might be your guilty

pleasure, but it’s one worth having.

PRESENTED BY Qatar Museums under the leadership of its Chairperson, HE Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the exhibition will feature the work of five of the Arab world’s most ground-breaking and influential modern and contemporary artists: Faraj Daham (Qatar); Saloua Raouda Choucair (Lebanon); Inji Efflatoun (Egypt); Farid Belkahia (Morocco); and Abdulhalim Al-Radwi (Saudi Arabia).

Each gallery in the museum’s ground floor exhibition space is dedicated to one artist and touches upon specific themes in their practice, allowing visitors to experience their productions through the lens of curatorial interpretations of historical contexts, materials and aesthetics, while interrogating the museum’s role by building academic and curatorial research

curatorial interpretations, with one of five curators assigned to each solo show. These are Mathaf Director Abdellah Karroum, Mathaf curators Laura Barlow, Fatma Mostafawi and Leonore-Namkha Beschi, and independent curator Mayssa Fattouh.

Abdellah Karroum, Director of Mathaf, says: “The role of this exhibition series is not only to conserve art over time, but to suggest paths for revisiting, re-experiencing, and seeing the selected artworks in light of current events and curatorial readings.”

Each of the five exhibitions on show at Mathaf explores multiple artistic approaches towards major topics of modernity including identity, invention and experimentation in art.

InJI eFFlATOUnA painter, feminist, and political activist, Inji Efflatoun was Born on April 16, 1924, in Cairo, and raised in an upper-class family. She received her secondary education at the LycéeFrançais before joining the Faculty of Arts at Cairo University in the early 1940s. She developed an interest in literature and political history at a young age, and studied painting under the artists Kamel el-Tilmisani, Margo Veillon, and Hamed Abdalla, who influenced her artistic practice with its claims for social freedom and unrestricted expression. Between 1942 and 1943 she exhibited with the Egyptian Surrealist Group Art and Liberty, which broke with well-established orders. She also took part in the Biennale of São Paolo in 1953 alongside renowned Egyptian artist Mahmoud Said. In 1959, she was secretly arrested and imprisoned for four years, and she painted throughout all her incarceration. Efflatoun’s paintings are strongly inspired by the social reality of the Egyptian working class and prison life, especially of women and their daily struggle. The artist died in Cairo on 17 April 1989. A selection of her later artworks was featured in the exhibition All the World ’s Futures at the 56th Venice

Biennale in 2015.

and Melehi - members of what is called the Ecole de Casablanca - organised an outdoor exhibition of abstract paintings in Marrakech’s public plaza, Jemaa El Fna. Belkahia exhibited across the globe during his lifetime, participating in major exhibitions and cultural events like the 1969 Festival Panafricain in Algiers and the First Arab Biennial in Baghdad in 1974. at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, in Paris, from 1955 to 1959 before continuing his studies in Prague between 1959 and 1962. In 1962, Belkahia returned to newly independent Morocco, where he settled in Casablanca and directed the city’s Ecole des Beaux-Arts until 1974. There, Belkahia and his colleagues, including Mohammed Chebaa and Mohammed Melehi, broke with the European-focused and colonial-era curriculum and introduced new subjects and courses, training students for the first time in Moroccan art, architecture, and craft. In 1967, the Saudi Ministry of Information asked Radwi to establish the first art center in Jeddah, named the Fine Art Center. Radwi both directed and taught alongside other artists at the center at between 1968 and 1974, but it closed in 1975 upon Radwi’s departure to Madrid to pursue his advanced studies. In Madrid, he also served as director of the city’s Arab Artists Association. After returning from Madrid, Radwi directed the Saudi Fine Art Society in Jeddah (1980-1992). Radwi is well known as a sculptor because of the numerous public artworks he designed for several cities in Saudi Arabia. SAlouA RAoudA CHouCAiR

Saloua Raouda Choucair was born in Beirut, Lebanon in 1916. Studies in natural sciences, early experiences in the humanities, and mentorship by artist Mustafa Farrukh established a progressive, outspoken intellectual and creative perspective expressed through the making of objects and writing. During formal art studies at the École nationale des Beaux-Arts, Paris, from 1948 and work with avant-garde peers in the inauguration of L’Atelier de l’art abstrait, Paris in 1950, Choucair continued experimenting with geometric abstraction through the fracturing of space in painting. These experiences solidified her understanding that the origins of modernism and abstraction are located in Arab art and architecture, as outlined in Choucair’s text, How Arabs Understood Visual Art, published in 1951, the year she returned to Beirut and began transitioning from painting to sculpture. Choucair continued to work in Beirut for the duration of her active career until the mid 1990s, experimenting with tangible domestic and public sculptural forms for individual and collective engagement to push the potential of existence beyond established societal systems. Three of the artist ’s sculptures are installed in Beirut. Choucair exhibited internationally throughout her career. Continuing to reside in Beirut, Choucair celebrates her 100th

birthday in June 2016. ✤

THE LAND ROVER DISCOVERY Sport was launched last year, replacing the outgoing and poorly selling (in the Middle East, anyway) LR2, or Freelander.

The Discovery Sport heralds a bold new direction for Land Rover, which emphasises style and luxury as much as capability and practicality. It was a direction sorely needed, especially in the Middle East where the model just didn’t have enough bling for the price.

It’s also rather surprising, as the Discovery Sport looks extremely similar to the Evoque, based as it is on the same chassis. In our eyes, it looks easily as good. And whereas the Evoque is for the ladies (Land Rover will

hate me for saying it, but it was designed by Victoria Beckham, after all!), the Discovery Sport can be driven by anyone, as it just feels that much more androgynous.

As a family crossover utility vehicle, the Discovery Sport is still on the pricey end of the scale, but the difference now is that the desirability matches the price tag. With a range of stylish colour options, and a very nice selection of alloy wheels, the Discovery Sport really lives up to Land Rover’s premium aspirations.

This is true for inside as well. For starters, the driving experience is excellent. With a supremely smooth and comfortable ride,

the Discovery Sport practically glides on the road, and it has excellent handling and agility thanks to the lightweight aluminium chassis.

The dashboard is simple and functional, and yet still stylish, with an excellent, intuitive and well laid-out driver interface. And the car manages to be both extremely comfortable and practical at the same time.

Incredibly for a CUV, they’ve manage to shoehorn seven – yes, SEVEN – seats into it. Admittedly, they refer to it as five plus two, as the rear seat is really unsuitable for anything over two feet tall, but the seats are there nevertheless, and disappear completely flat into the boot floor when not needed. When they are needed, the seats on the middle row slide forwards a bit to give more room in the rear, and when none are needed, both rows fold completely flat for huge cargo space.

Details like a USB charging port next to every seat in the first two rows, to stop the kids fighting with each other over charging their iPads, are what really make the interior stand out though.

And then there is the very user-friendly Terrain Response off-road system, and being a Land Rover, it does actually work, with an impressive 600mm wading depth, and decent approach and departure angles. It’s actually more capable off road than the Range Rover Evoque.

Some, in this region especially, might be put off by the inline-four engine, dismissing it as too small even for a CUV. But, they’d be mistaken. The Discovery Sport is no slouch, boasting as it does the same engine as the Evoque - Ford’s EcoBoost turbocharged four-pot, which puts out 240hp and 340Nm of torque through a very smooth and intuitive nine-speed automatic transmission. And the best part is that it’s incredibly light on the fuel.

Overall, the Land Rover Discovery Sport is one of the best all-round CUVs on the market today, covering style, comfort, practicality, safety and technology, thereby ticking all the boxes you can think of! Now, what more could you ask for from a car? ✤

PLUGGED-IN

T h e S a m s u n g G e a r S 2

We’ve been a little obsessed with smart watches over the last few months. We’ve been keeping a close eye on the Apple Watch, although we haven’t managed to get our hands on one yet.

And back in August we reviewed the Sony Smartwatch 3, and were rather impressed. However, as Apple’s main rival, both in sales and bitter litigation that seems to be never-ending, this smart watch from Samsung had us truly excited when we heard it was to be presented in the region at GITEX.

First impressions are excellent, especially with the Gear S2 Classic, which was far and away our favourite of the two. While the standard Gear S2 looks ok, it has much more of the feel of a minimalist sports watch, whereas the S2 Classic, with its leather band and metallic bezel, looks much more stylish and snazzy.

As for functionality, things only get better. The choice of displays is excellent – you can choose from over 20 different styles, including a futuristic-style numberless dial, or a more classic numbered multi-dial display for the S2 Classic. And each style can be further personalised too, giving you countless options.

The user interface is excellent too. The bezel acts

as a kind of touchpad, and swiping around the side of the bezel rotates through the different screens on the display to access the various functions. You can also swipe on the screen, but doing it on the bezel avoids greasy prints on the watch face.

From your watch, you can check notifications and messages, and even action some notifications. For example, you can reply to messages, either through pre-selected standard responses, a recorded message, or even type one through a T9-style keypad, although this is a bit fiddly.

If you tap the home screen button twice, you get all the apps in a circular layout, from which you can then select what you want.

Sensors on the phone include a gyroscope and an accelerometer for motion-activated features, as well as a heart sensor that allows the watch to act as an exercise aid with the S Health app as well.

A final bonus: Samsung are claiming that the Gear S2 will have up to three days of battery life depending on usage, which, if proved to be right, is excellent! ✤

VERdiCT: This smart watch is far and away the best example of the device we’ve seen to date. We’re buying one. Seriously!

a product that caused quite a stir at last month’s gitex expo in the uae was the samsung gear s2, the latest and greatest smart watch from the tech giant.

THIS SEASON, PULL&BEAR LAUNCHES an authentic initiative that is close to the brand’s heart: discovering interesting corners of the most appealing neighbourhoods in the world. Those that define the brand and which are full of that everyday magic that has enchanted Pull&Bear’s professionals.

The images in the collections for this autumn-winter are inspired by these urban landscapes. Using these images, Pull&Bear is presenting trends characterised by a mix of ethnic and bohemian inspirations, a romantic vintage that is full of personality, without nostalgia, as you can see in the photos taken by Catalonian artist Virgili Jubero. With his camera, he has immortalised a large cast of models in neighbourhoods in cities such as Berlin, London, Toronto, New York, Sydney and Lisbon.

This is just the beginning of the long, exciting journey that Pull&Bear will undertake this season, and which will take fashionistas to interesting

AW Men’S TRenDSThe men’s looks are characterised by a return to the brand’s street feel, interpreted through three main lines. The first uses the universe of blacks and whites as a starting point, and features technical running components. The second redesigns the basics, taking formal garments out of context and adapting them to modern patterns: sweatshirts and shirts with simple messages in white, blue, grey and red. The third is the purest vision of street style: details like elastic at the ankles and oversized patterns, checked shirts, overshirts, heavy denim, T-shirts with graphic contrasts, parkas, bomber jackets and more.

AW WOMen’S TRenDSThe spirit of the 70s is the undisputed star of the new Pull&Bear women’s collections for this autumn-winter. Urban environments, with a strong ethnic component, will take over from festival looks. The evolution can be seen in key elements: A-lines, deep V-necks, bell-bottom trousers and romantic shirts. Important decorative elements such as lace and embroidery make an appearance. Rustic fabrics (suede, corduroy, velvet) predominate, as do warm colours: tans, russets, wines and oranges. Floral and paisley prints highlight the seventies feel along with flowing, feminine lines.

SHOE CITI’S MISSION is to ensure that you walk out of the store with the perfect shoes that you love. The brand believe that nothing should come between you and your comfort and recognises that the perfect pair of shoes are crucial to this. This season, Shoe Citi has a range of the world’s most famous brand names with labels like Hush Puppies, Cushe, CIRO, Soft Science, King Paulo, Wolverine, Skechers, Puma, FitFlop, Hotter, NewBalance, Jansport, Pablosky, Clarks, Reebok, Nike, Fila, and Crocs to name just a few from the extensive range of footwear available.

softscienceA great part of Shoe Citi’s AW15 collection is the availability of SoftScience shoes. Shoes that are ultra light, superbly cushioned, supportive and durable, at an attractive price point. At the core of the SoftScience shoes’ construction and personality is a proprietary material called Trileon — a closed cell copolymer developed by Scott Seamans, founder and chief designer of Crocs, exclusively for SoftScience. The unique properties of Trileon — cushioned, stable and lightweight — allow for a production of shoes weighing just six to ten ounces that are comfortable with high-impact resistance and support. Trileon is used in the shoes’ durable outsole and in the removable, washable insole. The outsole and insole combine

to produce the unique comfort experience, which is the “WOW” factor in all SoftScience shoes. The shoes’ effective, yet simple, design and construction minimize the need for hardening adhesives and multiple layers of material. Wearers experience a roomy and relaxed fit, a stable platform, superb shock absorption, and an outsole that is slip-resistant and non-markingThe science of SoftScience comes from the Levelast UCP, the footbed design which lies at the heart of all our shoes. It was born from two simple concepts:Level: Shoes with minimal elevation changes from heel to toe keep the foot level, which is natural and healthy and helps disperse body weight evenly across the sole of the foot, reducing pressure points.Last: A “last” is the mechanical form on which a shoe is constructed and is central to the design and fit of the shoe. Our last design allows for a generous fit which accommodates most foot shapes and sizes and allows the foot to spread out, relax and reduce tension.By combining the cushioning and stability of Trileon with the Levelast footbed construction, SoftScience is able to offer uncompromising comfort across all of Shoe Citi’s styles.Get down to Shoe Citi and find your ideal fit, today! ✤

This nourishing, non-greasy oil leaves skin instantly radiant, and feeling smooth, while potent antioxidants work over time to help shield against harmful free radical damage. After cleansing, dispense two to three drops of oil in hand, and pat onto the skin; avoiding the eye area. The oil glides over the skin and absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy film.

This element adds a brooding mystery to the subtle sparkle of the floral. The surprising combination feels natural and timeless – flower and earth – but the effect created by the multi-faceted process is utterly contemporary, an alchemic slight of hand. The final effect is both scintillating and a little defiant: very Miu Miu.

Seriously good Sushi“I consider Japanese food as an art gallery which you will always have to create to suit your own taste

and picture.” Chef Kristoffer Albano.

STEPPING OFF THE ROAD and through the door into Oishi Sushi – you’ll completely forget that you’re in Juffair on a fast-food-packed road. The décor of the restaurant screams authentic Japanese, with wooden flooring, deep maroons and browns on the wall, contemporary wall art and beautiful Japanese fans decorating each corner of the restaurant. On the ground floor there’s bar-style seating, perfect for a quick and casual bite to eat. Upstairs, you’ll be greeted with a cosy dining area, with tables and chairs, and even a tatami-style or zashiki-inspired traditional Japanese seating area, all decked out with plush cushions and tableware.

What we love is that all of the menu items at Oishi Sushi are prepared on-site by expert sushi and teppanyaki chefs. “There is no place like Oishi Sushi,” Chef Kristoffer says. “The unique ambiance and the friendly and happy atmosphere - we truly always offer and serve the best to our customers.”

Oishis Sushi’s recipes are made with fresh, quality ingredients that are guaranteed this way through a comprehensive tracking system from their source. The fish is selected from a regulated list of non-threatened species like albacore tuna. “Our ingredients are mainly imported from Japan,” Chef Kristoffer tells us. “The secret of Oishi Sushi is always choosing the right and fresh ingredients.”

The menu at Oishi Sushi is vast and the variety amazing! Sushi, Sashimi, Salad, Temaki, Chirashi and Teppanyaki; this place really has it all. First out on the table for us was the Kani Salad and the Kyuri Salad. The first is made up of crab sticks, lettuce, cucumber, carrot, lollo rosso, avocado, mango, cherry tomato and tobiko. The latter is seaweeds, cucumber, green apple and dry wakame. Both salads are bursting with fresh flavours, and what we love the most is the combination of unusual ingredients that

bring out the innovative side of Japanese cuisine – they both go down a treat!

Next, the chicken gyoza, tuna salmon tetake and popcorn shrimp arrive. The gyoza is a standout, light and delicious when dipped in soy sauce. The tetake is super fresh and the shrimp is as mouthwatering as you would expect – especially with a sprinkle of the restaurants secret Japanese chilli powder (we had to spill, it’s too good not to share!).

Japanese dishes have a level of intricacy that seem tricky to get right. So, what drew Chef Kristoffer to the cuisine? “I chose Japanese cuisine because it’s different and difficult,” he says. “It looks good as it’s a piece of art and I like art. I consider Japanese food as an art gallery which you will always have to create to suit your own taste and picture.”

Next up, we try an amazing array of sushi and maki rolls including the Box B platter from the menu with Sesame California, Salmon Avocado, Volcano Maki, Salmon Philadelphia Cheese, Anakyuri, and Tuna Lover rolls, with wasabi and ginger. Alongside this came the assortment Chirashi bowl. The first thing we notice is just how colourful and beautifully-presented everything is. We also love the type of

traditional plates and trays that the food is served on. One by one we begin to pick up the rolls, dip in soy sauce, and indulge in all the fresh goodness. It’s safe to say that our favourites were the Volcano Maki, Salmon Avocado and Tuna Lover rolls - just divine!

“Presentation and taste are both important facts that satisfy our customers,” Chef Kristoffer says. “Having good presentation will give attraction and appetite to the customer and tempt them to eat. Then, once they love the taste, they will always come back to Oishi.”

For dessert, try something completely

unique – the mango tempura with ice cream. It’ll be unlike anything you’ve tasted before and if you’ve got a craving for something sweet, this should do the trick!

Chef Kristoffer hopes that over the next year, Oishi Sushi can expand with more locations in Bahrain and potentially to other GCC countries. As of now, only we can do is hope for a branch in Seef, because that would be a great place for lunch sorted! ✤

E u r o p E a n - S t y l E D i n i n g it’s been a year since Café amsterdam opened its doors to offer diners something

fresh, original and completely different from any other venue in Bahrain. it’s become a firm favourite for providing great food and a good atmosphere, so when the FaCt team learned that the restaurant had revamped its menu, we just had

to get over there and try it out…

Page 118: FACT Bahrain November 2015

fact magazine118

café Amsterdam, say the name to any real foodie in Bahrain and they’ll tell you about the venue’s exceptional décor, or they’ll talk about its popular

weekend brunch, and some might linger on the thought of how good the sticky toffee pudding is (really, it’s incredible!). Either way, we’ve always heard positive things about dining experiences at this modern, European-inspired restaurant.

Dedicated to its unique concept, one of the things we love about Café Amsterdam is the multiple dining and lounge areas available to guests under one roof. The downstairs is a mix of contemporary and classic with iconic European imagery such as life-size bicycles, traditional chinaware, pub-style interiors, and floral décor providing a different area to cater for all types of dining needs. Upstairs, you’ll find the state-of-the-art sports lounge, perfect for getting together with friends and watching a game, with a chilled drink in-hand. This leads onto a bright and spacious glass conservatory which offers an excellent al fresco dining area, ideal for the cool weather that we’re starting to get.

The menu at Café Amsterdam is a treat, reflecting the continuing evolution of modern European recipes, with Mediterranean and Middle Eastern influences. There’s everything from traditional fish and chips, to quality steaks, light appetisers, fresh salads, and scrumptious desserts, making it the perfect spot for breakfast, lunch, high tea, dinner or even just a coffee catch-up or casual after work drinks.

Now, let’s get straight to it! The new menu is a combination of innovative and flavourful dishes that cater to all. There’s something spectacular for meat-lovers, vegetarians and even vegan diets, and a few favourites from the old menu are still available too. The chefs have plenty of ingredients to play around with, and this sure does come across once we start to read what’s on offer.

Though we try an array of delicious dishes, let us give you some recommendations on what is an absolute must. Go for the Homemade Salmon Gravadlax and the Spinach and Gouda Cheese Salad to begin with. The first is thinly sliced cured Norwegian salmon, served with air bread and fresh sprouts. A clever dish, you’ll be

pleasantly surprised to know that the air bread is that which is used for an Indian dish called pani puri. Here, it’s stuffed with a light and creamy filling with the salmon on top – delicious. The latter of the two is a beautifully-presented plate with baby spinach, tomato and crispy onion laid on a bed of quinoa, surrounded by deep fried Gouda cubes, pine nuts and thin slices of dates, with a drizzle of balsamic. Put each component on your spoon or fork and eat it all together for the most amazing flavour – definitely one we’ll order again.

Vegetarian diners will love the Roast Seasonal Vegetables Terrine – which is

charcoal roasted veggies, pressed in a terrine, served with black olive tapenade and pesto – and it’s seasoned to perfection. Also try the Pumpkin Ravioli – homemade pasta stuffed with roasted pumpkin, caper butter sauce and parmesan shavings. There’s the perfect balance of cheesy sauce and delicious filling – we love it!

Seafood lovers will enjoy the Pan Fried Scallops with fresh local rocket, tomato tartar and sultana toffee. The scallops are cooked to tender perfection, dip them in the sultana toffee sauce and take a bite – just divine. For meat eaters, there’s nothing but the best. From the grill, try your choice of succulent steak, cooked to preference and served with mouthwatering sides, or go for the Café Amsterdam burger with

Gouda cheese and caramelised onion. For something more homely, opt for the Shepherd’s Pie in the specials menu - it’s one of the best we’ve tried in Bahrain.

Dessert is a whole other foodie affair. Without doubt, the Sticky Toffee Pudding never fails us, and it lived up to its sweet goodness this time around as well. The White Chocolate and Oreo Cheese Cake will please anyone who likes more citrusy flavours, as it’s topped with a passion fruit gelée. To warm up on a winter’s day, go for the Traditional Apple Pie with all it’s yummy side ingredients like vanilla sauce, almond crisps, and homemade cinnamon ice cream – much like the rest of the new menu at Café Amsterdam, it will not disappoint! ✤

The fresh mint and coriander clean up your palate, perfectly, and get you all excited and ready for dish number four. This menu item is the main course – and what a brilliant concoction of ingredients it is. On my plate is a succulent grilled jumbo prawn paired with the most amazing cut

Now, this is what I call out-of-this-world surf and turf fare befitting of real legends! Last, but by no means the least, a heavenly combination of white chocolate crème brûlée, passion fruit purée, and fresh warm biscotti arrives at the table. What a well-balanced dessert – it’s got the mix of textures from creamy and crumbly, to the well-complemented flavours of sweet and citrus! This dessert definitely sums up the whole experience in one serving, leaving you with a big smile of satisfaction. We were ten at the table and we were all

efficiently and happily served at the same time. As critics of the food world, everyone was quick to agree that this delicious marine journey was a positively great experience for all. What is the secret?

Being Real

even AFTer All TheSe YeArS working as a personal trainer some of my clients still seem shocked that I actually workout. For some reason, some of them think I just get out of bed and have fabulous shaped arms and gorgeously

defined legs. So, they ask “what is your secret?”The problem is that people want to know what the secret is but the secret is that you can’t change in just one month, it takes six months to a year or even a life time of consistency, working out and eating properly, to achieve your fitness goals. And, when I say eating properly this means truly feeding yourself, not starving yourself, but proper nutrition. You have to burn off all the crap in your body and replace it with really good food and fuel. To transform yourself you need consistency and dedication and you have to be willing

to make that lifestyle change.Anyone can change their life if they really want to but what you need to remember is that life is going to go by just as fast, whether you decide to change or not, it’s just up to you to decide who you want to be for the rest of

your life.So the secret is, there is NO secret. Making that change to a fit and healthy lifestyle can lead to amazing results such as; well-fitting clothes, having more energy, a sense of euphoria, genuine happiness, getting compliments, and

a general feeling of awesomeness. Go on, you can do it!

WhAT DoeS ThAT even meAn? Many of us have gotten so used to doing what others want, saying what we think is the right thing to say, that we lose track of what is real for us. It can be so easy to do this. Many people have learned to be the good pleasing child, and that becomes the only thing they know to do. How do you even know that you’re

not being real?A good indication of you being inauthentic is if you feel like something is not quite right within you. Something feels off. You could have this feeling only when doing certain things or it can be a feeling that permeates your

whole life and your whole self. Notice the times when you say to someone: “no it’s fine” when in fact it really does not feel fine to you. These are the places you can start to be true to yourself. Why would you even want to start being real when it has been so easy to agree or go along with things? The reason is because you have been designed to follow what feels right to you, to follow your inner guidance. When you start being authentic it feels right inside. When you start doing what is right for you, you will be more able to help others in

ways that is right for them.As Sara Bareilles sings: “Say what you want to say (in the most gentle way possible), let the words fall out, honestly.

“I want to see you be brave!”

Why do you Love Bahrain?

IF You hAD To lIST your favourite things about Bahrain on one hand, what would they be? I’m guessing the first one would be food, right? I know I certainly miss it when I leave our lovely little desert island, and it always seems to be the first thing that visitors talk about whenever they

come to stay. And now that the days have finally cooled down enough to make al fresco dining possible (and more importantly pleasurable), would you possibly count the weather as well? Thankfully, we have pretty short memories here in Bahrain. The first cool breeze and sight of clouds in the sky and we instantly forget the past six months of suffering through

temperatures hot enough to fry eggs. And I’m pretty sure you’re going to mention the people. Not only the tight-knit expat communities that become our adopted families, but also the warm-hearted locals who so graciously share their land and lives with us. Food, fabulous weather, and fine folk. It doesn’t get much better

than that!

three things that MaKe the Porsche centre stanD oUt...We always deliver outstanding customer service. When I got here, customer service was important but we’ve now increased on our expected levels, taking the business to scores reaching up to 98% customer satisfaction for sales and after sales. Some people argue that profit should be number one but, for me, it’s customer satisfaction. Make customers happy and the profit will follow. We’ve also now opened up a used car showroom, opposite our main showroom in Sitra. People buying a used or pre-owned Porsche will still get, and enjoy the level of, new car customer experience. We’ve also maintained our market share and aim to increase it by the end of the year.

yoUr goaLs With the Porsche centre over the next year...We want to continue to maintain the high level of service when it comes to customer satisfaction. The first half of this year was certainly difficult for most businesses, but we haven’t dropped our level of service, we haven’t reduced on any staff, in actual fact we’re still recruiting people. We want to make sure that when you come into Porsche Centre, you get the full brand experience right the way through to ownership. The remainder of 2015 is going to be a challenging time but we are set to achieve our revised targets and currently we’re enjoying a good level of sales. We have a fun here as well – there’s a great buzz and certainly no pressure!

yoUr FavoUrite hotsPots anD PastiMes in Bahrain…I particularly like Upstairs Downstairs. It’s, for me, living apart from my family in the UK, a great traditional English restaurant with a mix of expatriates and Bahrainis. The atmosphere is of a mature nature and I’ve never been disappointed with the food and the social aspect. My favourite restaurant is Sato in The Gulf Hotel. I love teppanyaki and that kind of entertained dining style. Also, we sponsor the Porsche Monday Night Madness at Royal Golf Club and lately I’ve been playing golf at least once a week. Now the weather is perfect, night golf is fantastic and I want to try and improve on my handicap!
