THE EDITOR

“You never really know how quick you are before you reach F1.” – Jean Alesi

Talking of all things fast, we’re back round to the event of the year – the 2015 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – and it’s set to be an immense weekend! If you want to be in the know about everything that’s happening, FACT has your Formula 1 fix with the hottest after-

parties, concerts, and special foodie offerings to check out from November 27 to 29. Let me start by giving a huge shout-out to FLASH entertainment for, yet again, bringing some of the world’s biggest music stars to Abu Dhabi for the Yasalam after-race concerts. Personally, I’m super excited about seeing Florence + The Machine! Turn to p16 and find out who else is on the line-up. It’s party galore for F1 fans this year, as the Podium Lounge (p18) makes a massive comeback with world-famous djs and performers, whilst The Crystal Group presents some great lounge experiences (p20), alongside more awesome events, specially created for the F1 festivities. We also catch up with one of my all-time favourite R&B artists, Craig David, ahead of his F1 appearance at Amber Lounge (p25). The Rendezvous singer will be bringing his popular TS5 party vibes to the city’s cool crowd for a great night out! Staying on the F1 theme, my favourite feature this month is the arts interview with Bahrain-based artist Hamad Bin Daina (p31). He draws and sketches every kind of car you can think of, and he especially drew this month’s incredible cover for us, with a little Emirati touch, of course. Pretty cool, right? Read all about his amazing talent, and passion for cars – it’ll surely get you into the F1 spirit! The Abu Dhabi arts scene is, once again, sparked with interest and intrigue as Abu Dhabi Art 2015 takes place this month (p39). We caught up with Alanood Al Hammadi, Senior Exhibitor officer at TCA Abu Dhabi, to learn more about the sensational programme of events that visitors can get involved in. We also feed your hunger for fashion, food, motoring, tech and travel with a trip to Jordan (p47); a test drive in the new Land Rover Discovery Sport (p59); the hottest AW15 collections and trends (p69); and a host of fabulous foodie features as well as all the best dining deals to check out in Abu Dhabi this month (p81). It’s almost time to put the Christmas carols on repeat and get in the festive spirit. It’s only going to get busier in the FACT office, but with a little bit of Jingle Bell Rock and plenty of good cheer, we wouldn’t have it any other way!☺

MUSICAL MASTERPIECEA new season of Abu Dhabi Classics – an eight-month-long series of classical concerts and performances by some of the world’s leading musicians and orchestras – was kick-started across the emirate in October. With a new and expanded programme of 26 performances in the UAE capital, Saadiyat Island, Liwa desert and historic sites in the emirate’s heritage heartland of Al Ain, the new season will run until May 2016 and include performances from some of the most prestigious names in Western and Eastern classical music. The season is presented by Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority (TCA Abu Dhabi) as part of the authority’s Music Programme 2015/16, with a theme of Music and Poetry and explores how the two come together, especially in light of the emirate’s affinity to poetry. Among the highlights this month will be Jordi Savall’s tour of the emirate with his creation Ibn Battuta Traveller of Islam, this time in the inspiring settings of Mushrif Park and Liwa Oasis; and the return of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra from the UK, who will perform Beethoven’s iconic 7th Symphony at Emirates Palace and also present a stunning film music night dedicated to the famous British spy James Bond, at the historic Al Jahili Fort in Al Ain. Later in May 2016, the celebrated China Philharmonic Orchestra from Beijing, under the baton of leading conductor Long Yu, will take centre stage for the first time in the region with two concerts in Abu Dhabi city and Al Ain, dedicated to Gustav Mahler and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.H.E. Mohammed Khalifa Ahmed Al Mubarak, Chairman, TCA Abu Dhabi, says: “By promoting traditional Emirati music along with international classical music and regional artists, TCA Abu Dhabi can offer world-class performances to everyone in the UAE.

“We want our youth to feel inspired by what they hear and see, and encourage them to bring music into their lives; whether that is learning a traditional Emirati instrument like the rebabah, or a classical instrument like the violin, or creating their own musical pieces, or simply taking an active interest in the lives and achievements of the great musicians here, and around the world.”In January, Abu Dhabi will host the rising ensemble of the Iberian Peninsula, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia, with two concerts, including Gustav Mahler’s impressive 6th Symphony and Manuel de Falla’s symphonic homage to his country’s

Hispano-Arabic past, The Nights in the Gardens of Spain. Given this year’s theme and the link between music and poetry, the prestigious poets, Adonis and Gulzar, as well as major musicians such as Oud master Naseer Shamma and German baritone Matthias Goerne will also make appearances during the Classics season. ✤

IN ANY HOST COUNTRY, the Formula One weekend is one of the most prestigious, glamorous and exciting sporting events of the year, attracting aristocrats, celebrities, billionaires and the motorsports elite to the spectacular racing venues. Hi Craig! It’s been 15 years since the release of your debut album Born to Do It – how has your style and approach to making music developed over the years?I think the biggest change is that I’m now making music for the fun of it. In this industry you can lose sight of what really matters, especially when sales figures come into it. Now, I am simply focused on making great music and enjoying the process of it all.

What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned from being in the music industry? It’s an extension on the above answer. The biggest lesson is to not focus on how many records you sell or what chart position to achieve. It’s all about working with people you love and creating a sound which is true to you and one that you’re proud of.

Are you working on any new material and what musical direction have you taken?I’ve been working on a new album for the last 18 months or so and honestly we have enough tracks for three albums. We’re nearly there but I’m going to carry on writing as you can never have too many amazing songs. I’m going back to my roots with this record – R&B/Garagey vibes but with those Pop hooks. I’ve been working with some incredible artists and producers on this record so I can’t wait to put it out!

We can’t wait to see you on stage – what can we expect from your famous TS5 party?TS5 is me playing all those tracks that everyone loves! In the process you get live vocals and freestyling from behind the booth. TS5 started out as me just djing at my house parties and has now become this global brand on Capital XTRA in the UK and NOVA FM in Australia. It’s been amazing seeing the growth of it and really everywhere I perform it, there’s an amazing party vibe.

What are you most looking forward to about performing in Abu Dhabi?I love the whole vibe of Abu Dhabi. Obviously, I have been there many times but to be going there during the F1 is incredible. It’s such a massive spectacle and to be performing at the Amber Lounge events is something I’m really excited about.

For the climactic and hotly anticipated final race on the Formula 1 Calendar, R&B superstar Craig David will headline with his world-famous TS5 show at Amber Lounge, the popular waterfront venue in the breathtaking Yas Links Golf Club. FACT caught up with the multi-platinum selling singer turned DJ to talk

music career highs and what we can expect on the big night in Abu Dhabi…

Your most memorable career moment to date…There’s been so many great moments which I have been fortunate enough to experience. To be honest, just being able to be in this industry and to write music for the last 16 years is a massive privilege because not many people get to have such long careers in this game. Performing across the world and getting to visit amazing places such as Abu Dhabi is something I could never have imagined, growing up. A definite stand out was actually performing at Notting Hill Carnival in August this year. I remember when I was 17, going to Carnival and hearing Rewind being played constantly. No one knew me at the time as the song was just starting to become a success, but being in the crowd and hearing my song being played was unbelievable. I never got to play at Carnival until last month and to finally get to do it, after all this time, was such a surreal experience.

One song that you wish you’d written or released…Human Nature by the one and only Michael Jackson. One of the greatest songs ever written.

F1 HAPPENINGS

How does DJing differ from song writing – do you prefer one to the other? The thing with the TS5 performance is that I’m mixing in both elements. To live mix and sing/freestyle at the same time is a mad thrill. For that reason, I think TS5 just pips it as I’m able to do everything in a one-hour set, which is perfect.

You’re one of the most down-to-earth and humble artists we’ve met. How do you keep yourself grounded?Thank you! I think it’s just making sure not to take things too seriously. Having a good group of people around you helps make that possible.

Music is a creative process and if you are thinking too much about the materialistic things which come with success, then you’ll never be able to create the songs that help you to achieve your goals.’

Page 27: FACT Abu Dhabi November 2015

fact magazine 27

Is there anyone you’d really want to collaborate with?I’ve been lucky enough to collaborate with so many great artists in the past. Michael Jackson would have been number 1 on my list as he was probably the most talented artist to have ever lived.

Any advice for upcoming musicians?Enjoy what you do, be true to who you are and as I mentioned, don’t take anything too seriously. Music is a creative process and if you are thinking too much about

the materialistic things which come with success, then you’ll never be able to create the songs that help you to achieve your goals.

You have a huge international fan base, have you got a message for them?Just a thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout the years. It really does mean the world and I’m looking forward to repaying that support with an album that I hope you all love. ✤

Cars With CharaCter and CraftBahraini artist Hamad Bin Daina has a rare passion for cars. He loves the look, the colours, and the bodywork rather than the performance. Shabana Adam talks to the master drawer about his cool and quirky talent for sketching all kinds of automobiles…

“"I'm into the body of the car and the way it looks, more than

ARTS INTERVIEW

AS THE FORMULA 1 2015 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix comes to the capital this month, we thought it only fitting to find an artist that embodies a unique love for cars in their work. Lo and behold, after some hashtagging and searching on social media, we came across 33-year-old Hamad Bin Daina aka @bh_vision and his insanely amazing sketches and drawings of every car model you can think of.

Hamad is completely self-taught and began with sketching cartoons, caricatures and all types of animation. But something changed. He became aware that when it came to drawing, his hand to paper pressure was quite heavy, and so he chose to start drawing cars.

“I decided to choose what I thought would be, for me, the hardest thing to draw,” Hamad says. “Especially sports cars, they’re very difficult to draw, but I taught myself to recognise the lines and the different angles and reflections, and now my drawings are done in my own unique way.”

The first car he drew was the Ferrari F50 – aged 18. He has somewhat of a deep appreciation for Italian cars. “I love the shape and the way they are designed,” he adds.

Something we found really fascinating is that, unlike traditional motoring enthusiasts, Hamad’s interest in cars is sparked purely

from a visual point of view. “I’m into the body of the car and the way it looks, more than the way it drives and the internal aspects like the engine,” he explains. “I just like looking at them, I’m very drawn to how attractive a car can be.”

“Sometimes, I can spend hours looking through magazines and searching on Google about the shape and the design, and the history of the car,” he says. His dedication to his art form is constantly present in every part of life, especially when he’s out driving.

“Sometimes I’ll see a car on the road and I’ll forget about everything else,” Hamad tells us. “I’ll have to stop and study the lines of the car so that I can start imagining how it will come to form on paper.”

For Hamad, drawing relaxes his mind. He can spend up to four hours a day sketching, especially if it’s a detailed piece. When it comes to tools and technique, he’s very sure of the type of pens and pencils he uses. “The most important thing with my drawings is to choose the thinnest of pens and pencils,” he says. “I do my drawings on A4 so the tools have to fit in with that. For example I use a .3 pencil and as I get deeper into the details, I’ll use .03.”

Hamad puts a quirky spin on some of his drawings, almost giving the car a character and bringing it to life. “If I’m only drawing

"If I'm only drawing reality''“cars, people can get bored of those drawings quickly. So, I developed a unique style of sketch, incorporating my Arabic culture and background."

“reality” cars, people can get bored of those drawings quickly,” he says. “So, I developed a unique style of sketch, incorporating my Arabic culture and background. I take the image of a gutra and the Arabic eyes and apply them into my drawings.” It’s certainly catchy and very different from anything we’ve seen before!

Hamad talks about his artistry with great enthusiasm, and he takes it seriously. Before starting a drawing, he’ll spend an ample amount of time researching different angles, the best reflections, and all the little details about any one car.

“For me, to start a drawing without research is the wrong step,” he says. “Imagine if you draw something from any angle just because you love the look of the car and it

ARTS INTERVIEW

comes out very dark or the reflections are not correct – how are you going to fix this afterwards? That’s why I research and look at as many pictures of the car beforehand.”

The McLaren P1 has been one of the most difficult cars to draw for Hamad. But, the one that really took it out of him was the 1989 Batmobile. “It’s like a very big fan at the front and then the bat wings. There were so

ARTS INTERVIEW

"My advice to anyone who likes drawing and sketching is just to really take your time. Forget about social media and don't just hurry to put your signature on anything. Finish your art to your own standard. Putting your signature on something shows how you feel about it. If it's good, you'll sign it."

many angles and lines to study – it was very difficult,” he recalls.

And what’s his favourite car to draw? “I love all of my art,” he says. “There are thousands of cars out there and I get to pick any one I want to draw – this is really exciting for me. There is, however, a car that’s very special to me, from the beginning, it’s very close to my heart – the dodge viper. I really really love this car, especially the lines and the colours. I spent around five days drawing it.”

Due to his demanding day job, Hamad’s biggest challenge is finding the time to create more drawings and take the next step towards things like exhibitions and art fairs, though he did take part in a local exhibition as part of Visionaries in Bahrain, where some of his drawings sold to VIP attendees and the social elite.

So, what keeps Hamad going? “The good thing is that you’re challenging yourself, and whenever you post your work on social media, many people from around the world can see it, like it, comment on it, and appreciate it,” he says.

Hamad clearly has a personal and deep connection with his drawings, and more so with the practice and concept of hand sketching – a rare quality in this modern day of technology. He does it for himself, because he enjoys it. “Each artist has their own way, it’s like their fingerprint,” he says. “And drawing cars, this way, is definitely mine.” ✤

Tell us more about the programme for 2015 – what can visitors expect?Abu Dhabi Art combines an art fair with a diverse programme of performing arts, talks and public art. Visitors can expect a selection of the world’s leading modern and contemporary galleries presenting exceptional artworks for sale in the gallery booths, and installations around the city as part of Beyond. There is also a programme of performing arts for all audiences to enjoy, and as part of Abu Dhabi Art Talks we will present three museum directors - Richard Armstrong of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation, Neil MacGregor of the British Museum, and Jean-Luc Martinez from the Louvre, Paris - and curators from some of the world’s most renowned museums.

Explain the process by which you select the work that is displayed at Abu Dhabi Art…A selection panel carefully chooses a number of modern and contemporary art galleries, established for at least three years, who bring museum quality works by renowned artists as well as innovative artworks by emerging artists. All artworks on display are from the 20th and 21st centuries. Each year we also designate one new gallery that is younger than three years in our Bidaya or beginning section, supporting them on an international platform. This year we are presenting Gallery One, Palestine’s first art gallery, which is based in Ramallah.

What are some of the biggest challenges about organising Abu Dhabi Art?The biggest challenge is to make sure Abu Dhabi Art gets better each year.

Why it’s Worth Watching?Yes! Another James Bond film is out this month and we’re beyond excited about the next big screen spy saga, even more so because Sam Mendes is at the helm once again. If you’ve seen the trailer and sneak peeks then, as always, you know that audiences can expect plenty of action-packed scenes, high-tech toys, new Bond babes, villains, and, cars! In fact, Bond (Daniel Craig) will be driving a custom Aston martin DB10 in the film – only 10 of the DB10 models were made! When a popular franchise like James Bond reaches this level of stardom, and age, the sceptics will, of course, be out in full force. They’ll be able to list their Bond favourites and flops, very easily. But, thankfully, Sam Mendes’ 50th anniversary blockbuster Skyfall was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews, so we’re hoping that Spectre will follow suit. If anything, this is likely going to be Daniel Craig’s last stint as 007, so there’s no doubt that he’ll want to go out with a bang. Surely, we’ll get the actor’s best Bond performance to date, right? Let’s wait and see!

spectreThe hunger games mockingjay: Part 2

What’s i t about: there’s a new sinister organisation in town by the name of Spectre, which sends Bond on a trail to uncover its secrets, following a cryptic message from the spy’s past. Meanwhile, M is facing a battle of her own as she fights the political forces to keep the secret service alive. What is Spectre? and, how far will Bond have to go, to reveal the terrible truth?

What’s it about:it’s time for President Snow and the autocratic Capitol to face the wrath of Katniss Everdeen and district 13. it’s a full-on revolution as the “Mockingjay” and her freedom fighters head to the capitol.

Why it’s Worth Watching? This is what we’ve been waiting for. Every Hunger Games film has led up to this. It’s time for Katniss ( Jennifer Lawrence) and co. to fight the cruel capitol and get justice for every district that has been destroyed by President Snow and his puppets. There are so many questions to address – what’s going to happen to Peter ( Josh Hutcherson); will President Snow get what’s coming to him; what’s in store for Katniss… let’s hope we get all the answers we’ve been waiting for! There are rumours that more films might be lined up for the franchise (fingers crossed!) so there’s a good chance that we might be left with another cliffhanger…

The New York Times Bestselling Author, Anthony Marra, is back with The Tsar of Love and Techno; a collection of short stories that intertwine to make for a compelling, emotional and at times comical read. The setting is post-soviet society and compromises of three characters, a soldier, a ballerina and a space museum manager, all of whom are connected through art. It’s an incredibly moving collection of stories that is most certainly going to bring you to tears, but the fact that it is so true to life, with both it’s triumphs and tragedies, is what makes this book so touching and such a fantastic read, sure to stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page.

Sophia Amoruso could be named as a modern day Superwoman, she’s determined, driven and definitely not what you’d expect from a CEO. Now the founder and CEO of Nasty Gal, she was once a dumpster diving, hitch-hiking, petty theft committing teen who wasn’t one for sticking to the rules, something that she’s translated into her business life. In this book she describes the struggles she went through to make her dream job come to life, as well as giving some tough truths and straightforward words of advice for anyone wishing to do this same, but above all, she shows that with some seriously hard work and knowing which rules to follow and when, nothing is impossible.

Ellie Goulding had set the bar pretty high with her 2012 album, Halcyon, so we were expecting big things from her when it came to Delirium. The first track released from the album happened to feature in one of the most anticipated films of the year, Fifty Shades of Grey. Love Me Like You Do featured much of Ellie’s traditional, dreamy tones matched with upbeat vibes, easing us nicely into her upcoming album. Rumoured to be a clap-back to Ed Sheeran’s “Don’t”, On My Mind plays with plenty of sounds, making it a definite favourite from the album as well as a great throwback to earlier songs that gave Ellie her edge. The lyrics give it a hip-hop vibe whilst the guitar riffs and electro-beats combine to give a brilliantly catchy and infectious sound that’s bound to stick with you from the first listen. Something In The Way You Move gives the album the perfect injection of Pop, it’s certain to be a huge hit in the clubs but equally is the perfect song to blast on your journey to work to get you pumped for the day. Delirium is the perfect match of dreamy love songs and upbeat, empowering anthems but is it enough to rival her previous offerings? Not quite, but still a brilliant listen.

winning the hearts of teens across the globe. Despite

often being compared to One Direction, they remind

us more of the likes of early Blink 182, Fall Out Boy

Beirut, Dubai, Damascus, Jeddah, - for one reason or another, I’ve heard (and even visited some) of these vibrant Middle East cities, but when it comes to Amman, not so much. Jordan’s capital city is not one that has really ever been on the radar, and certainly wasn’t even in the top 10 on my travel bucket list. However, when soaring above the beautiful desert and mountainous landscape, scattered with greenery, into Queen Alia International Airport, I quickly learned that this was going to be an interesting introduction to Jordan.

In all my time spent in the Middle East, I have never quite seen a city that looks like this. Aptly called The White City, Amman is dotted with mostly whitewashed buildings, interspersed with a few brown ones here and there. The skyline is, very obviously, missing the modern skyscrapers that you might be used to seeing elsewhere in the region – this is a refreshing and welcomed scene. “This is because you were not allowed to build more than seven floors high until recently,” explains Mohammed, our local taxi driver. There’s something beautiful about the uniformity in such skylines, and with Amman being a city with many steep streets and twisting walkways, not to mention that it has 56 mountains, you’re always guaranteed a spectacular view.

When in Amman, get stuck in! Start at the citadel, the site of the ancient Rabbath-Ammon, home to striking historical structures like the Roman Temple of Hercules and the Ummayad Palace. The citadel sits on Jebel al-Qala’a, the highest hill in Amman, so expect some pretty magnificent views. Head to the lively downtown for an experience of chaos and culture; there’s a shop for everything. Fresh fruit and veg markets, souvenir stores, traditional Jordanian dress boutiques, thrift shops with vintage trinkets, weird and wacky accessories, furniture, and, literally, everything in between. Most Jordanian women in downtown Amman are wearing the hijab, and though Western

women are not expected to cover up at the same level, there will be a few stares if you’re in a dress, but no more than what you’d expect in, say, downtown Abu Dhabi. It’s the most traditional part of the city, and the most overwhelming. But, locals are incredibly friendly, you can pick up a bargain, and the street food and juice stalls are some of the best I’ve encountered. THIS is the Middle East – and I love it!

Jordan’s location is an interesting one. To the north is the strife torn Syria as well as Lebanon. To the west is Egypt and Israel, whilst Saudi Arabia lies south and to the east is Iraq. Jordanians are very much aware of what’s happening in their neighboring nations, unafraid to talk about and acknowledge the different situations. However, one thing that was surprising and heart-warming is just how friendly and peaceful the Jordanian people and their country is. Five days travelling there, meeting the locals and experiencing true Arabian hospitality with real traditions, I can confidently say that I felt completely safe during this magical journey in Jordan. ✤

My first real insight into Petra was the British television programme An Idiot Abroad. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant decided to send their good friend - and typical “little Englander” - Karl Pilkington to visit the Seven Wonders of the World, albeit with a few surprises of local culture thrown in. The episode in Jordan was the first time I saw more of Petra, more than it being just a location used for films like Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade, The Mummy Returns, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, to name but a few. Karl spent the night in a cave, under the stars, and, surprisingly, enjoyed it!

No matter how many times I’d watched this episode, or Google searched Petra before our weekend trip to Jordan, nothing really prepares you for this monumental place. The second you enter the site and

camp for bread and tea; ask a local Bedouin to show you the springs and river, along which they have little vegetable gardens, or get them to put some traditional eyeliner on you – made by collecting the ashes of a burnt tree and mixing these with olive oil - this eyeliner humidifies your eyes and has a soothing effect, allowing Bedouins to protect their eyes from the sun without the need for sunglasses (the makeup industry really should catch onto that one!).

Like most tourist destinations, be prepared for a little bit of heckling from young children selling postcards and trinkets, as well as people trying to give you the “best price” for a horse, camel or donkey ride. A polite “no thank you” will suffice and you’ll be left alone. The best way to explore Petra is on foot, so make sure you’re dressed appropriately – fitness wear or loose-fitted trousers and a shirt, with walking boots or sturdy trainers will do the trick. Keep a bottle of water at hand too (there are plenty of little shops and Bedouin-style cafes inside Petra that sell hot and cold refreshments). If you’re going in the warmer months, take sunscreen and a hat to protect your face, and, of course, don’t forget your camera!

I’d recommend doing plenty of research on Petra before you arrive - it’s an enormous place with plenty to see and do, and you’ll definitely want to make the most of stepping back in time, if only for one day. ✤

stroll down the winding walkways, cloaked by huge wild rocks, and when you first lay eyes on the Treasury through the Siq, there really are no words to describe what’s in front of you. I remember trying to think of as many hashtags as possible for a photo of our day trip – #beautiful #amazing #stunning #magical – there was just no word strong enough to do justice to the beauty of this site.

Petra is rich in history and tradition. From its archaeological importance as the capital city of the Nabataeans, to its biblical significance that dates back to 7000BC, you can learn all about its intriguing past at the brand new renovated museum located at the site’s entrance. The track into Petra sprawls downhill from the little village of Wadi Musa. First impressions are strange yet spectacular. Weathered rocks, in deep reds and browns tower above you like domes; occasionally you’ll pass the façade of an old tomb in a side valley or come across caves built into the rocks – the sensation is that of something so different that you’ll feel like you’ve wandered into another world.

You absolutely need one whole day to take in every corner of Petra. Hike up the cliff to the monastery; stop by a Bedouin

SuiTe Livingexpect nothing short of a royal treatment at the Four Seasons hotel Amman. Check-in is as smooth a process as can be and first impressions of the staff show how incredibly friendly and welcoming they all are – we feel at home! The hotel itself is stunning – with a lobby that boasts a grand staircase, a beautiful chandelier and marble finishings. ThIS, is what true Arabian hospitality is about! our accommodation for the next four nights was going to be an executive king Suite – a lavish room located on the 5th to 14th floors (we were on 11!) with a huge and comfortable king bed, a separate living area with plush sofas, a walk-in closet, and a massive bathroom with a heavenly tub and shower. The city views from the suite were spectacular, plus we were blown away by just how spacious these living quarters were. From the soft bedding, to the luxury amenities and the different areas of the suite, everything was perfect, but, for us, it was the added touches that made the stay all that more special. every day, there were foodie treats waiting in the living room – from dry fruits to delicious cold mezze, an array of drinks, and the tastiest chocolate truffles we’ve ever tried. Add to this the nespresso machine and generously stocked mini bar, and you’ve got little extras that add to the high level of comfort and service that we experienced. our most favourite thing was the innovative lighting in the room – especially the bedside lamps which had a multitude of dim to bright light options – and when you’re in Amman for work or leisure, it’s important to get a good night’s sleep – with these fixtures plus the amazing beds, we had the best night’s sleep!

Divine Dining Let us start with one of our favourite parts of the stay – breakfast at olea restaurant. number one – we love that breaky is served until 11am, number two – the hot and cold offerings are delicious, especially the fresh fruit and the yummy pastries, and number three – the staff provide the most efficient service which will have you start your day on a positive note. Friday Brunch in olea is a massive must. The array of food and drinks in exquisite; meat-eaters will love the juicy bbq-style steaks and chicken and lamb on skewers; whilst starters provide refreshing salads and a mix of mouthwatering mezze; and desserts are a whole other delight – we recommend the chocolate lava cake! every week, the brunch adopts a new theme and the food and drinks are designed to reflect this. olea also has an outdoor terrace where guests can dine, enjoy their choice of shisha, and admire the herb garden. If you really want to feel the real hustle and bustle of an evening in Amman, head to Five Grill & Lounge – a brand new terrace that is frequented by the city’s cool crowd and those who want a relaxed evening with friends, in a stylish and modern atmosphere. This lovely venue had the most incredible beet salad that we’ve ever tasted. Plus drinks are delicious, service is fast and you can enjoy an aromatic shisha as well as Amman’s gorgeous weather too.

SPA SeCreTSThere’s your regular luxury spa, then there’s the breathtaking spa at the Four Seasons hotel Amman. Inspired by the restorative and relaxing benefits of the Dead Sea, this spa boasts a huge indoor pool, a sprawling changing area (men and women separate), great treatment rooms with ➻

mood lighting and music, and a nice relaxation area for after-treatment. We’d highly recommend either the Spa Signature treatment which starts with the delicate removal of dead skin cells followed by a warm Dead Sea mud wrap to help cleanse and detoxify the skin, finishing with the oriental relaxing massage; or the nabatean treatment – a luxurious local treatment which starts with a full body scrub using a unique mixture of olive seeds and Dead Sea salt crystals, followed by a full body olive oil massage. The treatment continues with a scalp massage using special Argan oil. The first of the two is great for clearing toxins, and relaxing the body, whilst the latter gives you glowing skin and eases muscle tension. With both treatments, the therapists were extremely knowledgeable and professional. We recommend that you arrive 30 minutes prior to your treatment and make use of the spa facilities, such as the sauna and steam room. You’ll feel transported to a whole different world at this spa – and, like us, you won’t want to leave.

Four Seasons hotel Amman is truly a special place. The décor, the design, the amenities and facilities, every single guest comfort has been carefully thought about and created. What we loved most, however, was the warm nature of the staff, for whom nothing was too much of an ask. If you’re planning a trip to other Jordania sites like the Citadel, the dead sea or even Petra, the lovely people at the concierge desk will be happy to help. We’ll be returning to Amman soon, and the Four Seasons will definitely be the place to stay! ✤

THE LAND ROVER DISCOVERY Sport was launched last year, replacing the outgoing and poorly selling (in the Middle East, anyway) LR2, or Freelander.

The Discovery Sport heralds a bold new direction for Land Rover, which emphasises style and luxury as much as capability and practicality. It was a direction sorely needed, especially in the Middle East where the model just didn’t have enough bling for the price.

It’s also rather surprising, as the Discovery Sport looks extremely similar to the Evoque, based as it is on the same chassis. In our eyes, it looks easily as good. And whereas the Evoque is for the ladies (Land Rover will

hate me for saying it, but it was designed by Victoria Beckham, after all!), the Discovery Sport can be driven by anyone, as it just feels that much more androgynous.

As a family crossover utility vehicle, the Discovery Sport is still on the pricey end of the scale, but the difference now is that the desirability matches the price tag. With a range of stylish colour options, and a very nice selection of alloy wheels, the Discovery Sport really lives up to Land Rover’s premium aspirations.

This is true for inside as well. For starters, the driving experience is excellent. With a supremely smooth and comfortable ride,

the Discovery Sport practically glides on the road, and it has excellent handling and agility thanks to the lightweight aluminium chassis.

The dashboard is simple and functional, and yet still stylish, with an excellent, intuitive and well laid-out driver interface. And the car manages to be both extremely comfortable and practical at the same time.

Incredibly for a CUV, they’ve manage to shoehorn seven – yes, SEVEN – seats into it. Admittedly, they refer to it as five plus two, as the rear seat is really unsuitable for anything over two feet tall, but the seats are there nevertheless, and disappear completely flat into the boot floor when not needed. When they are needed, the seats on the middle row slide forwards a bit to give more room in the rear, and when none are needed, both rows fold completely flat for huge cargo space.

Details like a USB charging port next to every seat in the first two rows, to stop the kids fighting with each other over charging their iPads, are what really make the interior stand out though.

CITY RIDES

Page 61: FACT Abu Dhabi November 2015

CITY RIDES

And then there is the very user-friendly Terrain Response off-road system, and being a Land Rover, it does actually work, with an impressive 600mm wading depth, and decent approach and departure angles. It’s actually more capable off road than the Range Rover Evoque.

Some, in this region especially, might be put off by the inline-four engine, dismissing it as too small even for a CUV. But, they’d be mistaken. The Discovery Sport is no slouch, boasting as it does the same engine as the Evoque - Ford’s EcoBoost turbocharged four-pot, which puts out 240hp and 340Nm of torque through a very smooth and intuitive nine-speed automatic transmission. And the best part is that it’s incredibly light on the fuel.

Overall, the Land Rover Discovery Sport is one of the best all-round CUVs on the market today, covering style, comfort, practicality, safety and technology, thereby ticking all the boxes you can think of! Now, what more could you ask for from a car? ✤

a season DeciDeD, but not over

so here it is, another exciting Formula One weekend in Abu Dhabi, with an excellent line-up of on-track action and off-track

entertainment in store. Unfortunately, the Championship title was already decided in Austin, Texas, when Lewis Hamilton won the race, and therefore the Championship.

Though it didn’t always go to plan for the Silver Arrows, the team showed enough dominance throughout the season for Mercedes to be crowned the Constructors Champions after the Russian GP in Sochi.

However, it all came down to a thrilling US F1 GP, in Austin, Texas, where they were now looking to lock in the double crown with a convincing win from Hamilton. He needed to be two points clear of Rosberg and nine points clear of Sebastian Vettel, who was now in second

place in the Drivers’ Championship. If Hamilton won the race, Vettel needed to come second to keep his title dreams alive until Mexico on November 1st.

A race weekend blighted by torrential rain, the qualifying sessions were halted repeatedly, and only completed on race day, hours before the green flag, with Rosberg on pole, and Hamilton alongside him.

In a thrilling, incident-packed race that saw two virtual safety cars, two real safety cars, and only 12 of 20 cars finish, it looked like Rosberg had the best of it, and the Championship fight would continue to Mexico. However, in the closing stages Danil Kvyat overcooked a corner, slipped on the grass and crashed out, bringing out the safety car for the second and final time.

Hamilton capitalised to dive in and change his tired tyres and come out right behind Rosberg in the bunched up field.

After that, it only took one mistake by a pressured Rosberg to hand Hamilton the lead, and Rosberg held off a charging Vettel to secure the Brit’s championship title.

Hamilton’s historic win puts him alongside his idol Ayrton Senna and top British driver Jackie Stewart with three Championship titles. However, it also makes him the first British driver to defend his championship with two back-to-back wins.

By the time you read this, the Mexico GP will have just taken place, with only the Brazilian GP on the 15th and the Abu Dhabi GP on the 29th to go.

It’s a shame that the battle didn’t go down to the season finale as it did last year, but that’s not to say it will be a boring race. Nico Rosberg will be battling to regain second place in the Championship from Vettel, and the heated battles between mid-pack teams like Williams, Red Bull, Torro Rosso and Force India have been providing superb

wheel-to-wheel entertainment at each and every race of the season.

A seemingly resurgent McLaren will also be looking to grab as many points as possible, and with Red Bull’s threats to pull out of F1 ongoing, young bucks Max Verstappen and Carlos Sainz Jr. have serious points to prove to ensure they have seats in the coming season.

And of course, thrilling though the

races are, Formula One is not just about on-track action. Abu Dhabi’s glamorous season finale always attracts a good crowd of celebrities, sporting elite and fans from across both the region and the world, with an exciting line-up of post race parties and entertainment guaranteeing an excellent weekend for all.

PLUGGED-IN

T h e S a m s u n g G e a r S 2

We’ve been a little obsessed with smart watches over the last few months. We’ve been keeping a close eye on the Apple Watch, although we haven’t managed to get our hands on one yet.

And back in August we reviewed the Sony Smartwatch 3, and were rather impressed. However, as Apple’s main rival, both in sales and bitter litigation that seems to be never-ending, this smart watch from Samsung had us truly excited when we heard it was to be presented in the region at GITEX.

First impressions are excellent, especially with the Gear S2 Classic, which was far and away our favourite of the two. While the standard Gear S2 looks ok, it has much more of the feel of a minimalist sports watch, whereas the S2 Classic, with its leather band and metallic bezel, looks much more stylish and snazzy.

As for functionality, things only get better. The choice of displays is excellent – you can choose from over 20 different styles, including a futuristic-style numberless dial, or a more classic numbered multi-dial display for the S2 Classic. And each style can be further personalised too, giving you countless options.

The user interface is excellent too. The bezel acts

as a kind of touchpad, and swiping around the side of the bezel rotates through the different screens on the display to access the various functions. You can also swipe on the screen, but doing it on the bezel avoids greasy prints on the watch face.

From your watch, you can check notifications and messages, and even action some notifications. For example, you can reply to messages, either through pre-selected standard responses, a recorded message, or even type one through a T9-style keypad, although this is a bit fiddly.

If you tap the home screen button twice, you get all the apps in a circular layout, from which you can then select what you want.

Sensors on the phone include a gyroscope and an accelerometer for motion-activated features, as well as a heart sensor that allows the watch to act as an exercise aid with the S Health app as well.

A final bonus: Samsung are claiming that the Gear S2 will have up to three days of battery life depending on usage, which, if proved to be right, is excellent! ✤

VERDICT: This smart watch is far and away the best example of the device we’ve seen to date. We’re buying one. Seriously!

a product that caused quite a stir at last month’s gitex expo in the uae was the samsung gear s2, the latest and greatest smart watch from the tech giant.

THIS SEASON, PULL&BEAR LAUNCHES an authentic initiative that is close to the brand’s heart: discovering interesting corners of the most appealing neighbourhoods in the world. Those that define the brand and which are full of that everyday magic that has enchanted Pull&Bear’s professionals.

The images in the collections for this autumn-winter are inspired by these urban landscapes. Using these images, Pull&Bear is presenting trends characterised by a mix of ethnic and bohemian inspirations, a romantic vintage that is full of personality, without nostalgia, as you can see in the photos taken by Catalonian artist Virgili Jubero. With his camera, he has immortalised a large cast of models in neighbourhoods in cities such as Berlin, London, Toronto, New York, Sydney and Lisbon.

This is just the beginning of the long, exciting journey that Pull&Bear will undertake this season, and which will take fashionistas to interesting

AW MEN’S TRENDSThe men’s looks are characterised by a return to the brand’s street feel, interpreted through three main lines. The first uses the universe of blacks and whites as a starting point, and features technical running components. The second redesigns the basics, taking formal garments out of context and adapting them to modern patterns: sweatshirts and shirts with simple messages in white, blue, grey and red. The third is the purest vision of street style: details like elastic at the ankles and oversized patterns, checked shirts, overshirts, heavy denim, T-shirts with graphic contrasts, parkas, bomber jackets and more. ✤

AW WOMEN’S TRENDSThe spirit of the 70s is the undisputed star of the new Pull&Bear women’s collections for this autumn-winter. Urban environments, with a strong ethnic component, will take over from festival looks. The evolution can be seen in key elements: A-lines, deep V-necks, bell-bottom trousers and romantic shirts. Important decorative elements such as lace and embroidery make an appearance. Rustic fabrics (suede, corduroy, velvet) predominate, as do warm colours: tans, russets, wines and oranges. Floral and paisley prints highlight the seventies feel along with flowing, feminine lines.

SEPHORA BROW THICkENERSephora has designed a myriad of make-up products that are just as convenient and fun to use as ever! Our favourite from the collection is the brow-thickening powders, because Mother Nature didn’t necessarily bless us with ultra-luscious eyebrows like Miss Delevingne’s. The packaging also strikes a perfect balance of glamour and modern flair.

CLINIQUE SMART TREATMENT OILThe new Clinique Smart Treatment Oil is lightweight and infused with de-aging ingredients that help to deeply condition dry and damaged skin. This nourishing, non-greasy oil leaves skin instantly radiant, and feeling smooth, while potent antioxidants work over time to help shield against harmful free radical damage. After cleansing, dispense two to three drops of oil in hand, and pat onto the skin; avoiding the eye area. The oil glides over the skin and absorbs quickly without leaving a greasy film.

OPI VENICE COLLECTIONNail professional and colour experts at OPI have created a collection this Fall/Winter 2015 that captures the essence of one of Europe’s most romantic ancient capitals – Venice. Enjoy 12 shades of on-trend new lacquer shades with matching GelColor that puts Venice at your fingertips. Available as part of the permanent OPI colour offerings, some of our favourites include the lush melon A Great Opera-tunity, coffee cream Tiramisu for Two, ravishing red Amore at the Grand Canal, opaque crème Gelato on My Mind, and pastel lilac Purple Palazzo Pants to name but a few.

MIU MIU MIUCCIAThe soft, fresh, ingénue scent is set against a deep earth-toned background with the use of peppery Akigala wood, an extract of patchouli. This element adds a brooding mystery to the subtle sparkle of the floral. The surprising combination feels natural and timeless – flower and earth – but the effect created by the multi-faceted process is utterly contemporary, an alchemic slight of hand. The final effect is both scintillating and a little defiant: very Miu Miu.

VICTORIA’S SECRET FOREVER SExYVS perfumers were inspired by the duality of the corset - the interplay of delicacy and strength. The end result is Forever Sexy, a unique combination of weightless florals and tantalising warm notes. Italian Belladonna Orange sparkles with energy. A hint of Creamy Coconut gives Solar Gardenia and Jasmine Petals an ethereal effect. The Golden Amber accord - a VS exclusive - blends with woody notes to anchor the fragrance in deep sensuality. Warm and captivating, Forever Sexy is undeniably addictive.

Italian Excellence at

SPACCANAPOLI IS AN OLD BUT FIRM FAVOURITE AMONGST ABU DHABI’S RESIDENTS,

SITUATED AS IT IS DOWNTOWN NEAR THE TOURIST CLUB DISTRICT IN THE HEART OF THE

CITY. AND WE THINk ITS FAN BASE IS GOING TO INCREASE DRAMATICALLY IN THE MONTHS

TO COME, LARGELY THANkS TO THE TALENTS OF THEIR NEW SPECIALIST ITALIAN CHEF…

CHEF’S TABLE

CHEF PIERO NOGARO has worked in many cuisines in countries around the world, and now brings his experience of working in Michelin-starred restaurants to Abu Dhabi, where he takes the helm of one of the city’s best-loved Italian eateries, Spaccanapoli.

As with any good Italian chef, Piero sources only the finest ingredients to form the core of all his dishes, which are both authentic and diverse. “Great food is made with perfect ingredients,” he says. “The variety of high quality and fresh ingredients is very important in Italian cuisine. Italian regional cooking is also diverse because it is influenced by local history, tradition, and climates.

“The same dish can be prepared and made differently in different regions. Don’t be surprised when you see various versions of pizza, risotto, pasta, meat, fish, and cheese in Italy,” Chef Piero adds.

However, with so much tough competition in Abu Dhabi, such long-term success for a restaurant can’t only be based on the food. There are several other key factors, as Chef

Piero explains: “Atmosphere is important, as well as good food, but what really sets us apart is how consistent we are and how much we pay attention to details,” he explains.

“We set high standards in every little thing. Every single plate is always carefully inspected before being delivered to the guests. In addition, we have a great team of well-trained, hospitable staff who take very good care of the guests and make them come back again and again.”

As if on cue, the hospitable staff brought our first dish, the Seared Scallops, with truffle mashed potato and crispy fried leeks. Scallops are a particular favourite of ours, and we’ve had so many great examples over the years that we’re something of a tough judge. Fortunately, we judged these to be excellent! Melt-in-your-mouth tender and extremely tasty, the truffle mash was incredible.

Then came a dish that was a first for us, but apparently very well known in Italy, the Oven Baked Rolled Eggplant Gratin, with mozzarella, Parmesan, tomato sauce and

basil. The rolled eggplant is stuffed with the mozzarella and Parmesan, and the flavours are absolutely delicious. Though it sounds complex, the dish is actually very simple, with the individual flavours standing out and complementing each other, which in essence is what the cuisine is all about.

“I prepare Italian food with an Italian heart,” Chef Piero says. “I have great respect for the traditional cooking. To me simplicity, freshness and the perfect combination of seasonings are the key to bringing out the finest taste and true flavours of the cuisine.”

This can most certainly be seen in the next dish to arrive, the Oven Cooked Sea Bass Mediterranean Style, with potatoes, Taggiasche olives, caper flowers and cherry tomatoes. Again, the top-notch ingredients combine really well in this simple baked dish to create a succulent and delicious fish course.Next, another favourite of ours, a Mushroom Risotto, with Italian saffron, wild mushrooms and shaved Parmesan, cooked to al dente perfection in a deliciously creamy sauce.

Page 83: FACT Abu Dhabi November 2015

CHEF’S TABLE

And finally, a homemade Tiramisu presented in a simple and classic way, but easily one of the best examples we’ve tried to date – rich, creamy and just enough, but not too much, kick from the coffee flavour. Just exquisite!

We were thoroughly impressed by the quality of the dishes we sampled at Spaccanapoli, and there are only bigger and better things planned for the restaurant too. As any lover of Italian food knows, the cuisine goes best with ‘grape beverages’, and knowing this, the venue is introducing an exciting new concept.

Chef Piero tells us: “We are preparing for the launch of ‘the cellar by Spaccanapoli’, presenting one of the largest selection of reds and whites in Abu Dhabi. The idea is to create a true ‘cellar’ experience and we hope this will soon be a prime place for enthusiasts in town.” Well, we’re sold…✤

to the next level is in the presentation of the dishes. They say that you eat with your eyes as well as your mouth, so staying true to the carnivalesque theme of the restaurant, each dish includes colourful ingredients and elaborate arrangements to create enticing and playful presentations that appeal to all the senses.

Our experience began with the Bresaola stuffed with goat cheese, ricotta and walnut, which came with glazed pear, candied walnut and marinated yellow carrot. The stuffed bresaola is delicious, with the creaminess of the goat cheese and ricotta and the crunchiness of the walnut going together excellently.

Our next starter was the Buffalo Mozzarella, which was a simple dish of very tasty and creamy soft mozzarella with tomatoes, tomato terrine, basil, and very high quality extra virgin olive oil - divine!

For main course, we started with the Risotto Frutti di Mare, an excellent and rich seafood risotto with prawns, calamari, lobster, mussels and clams, as well as sweet poached cherry tomatoes, and drizzled with olive oil. It tasted exactly as good as you’re imagining it does right now!

Then came the Veal Milanese, which is breaded bone-in veal cutlet with gratinated purple potato and leek, Taleggio panacotta and baby rucola salad. The veal is pounded flat before being cooked to perfection, and it’s tender and delicious.

A rare and special treat came next, as we were introduced to an entirely unique creation using a combination of traditional Italian and local flavours. The Abu Dhabi pizza is a delicious thin and crispy base with a topping of saffron béchamel, mozzarella cheese, shrimp, calamari, lobster, halloumi cheese and zataar. It was superb!

For dessert, we tried a trio of chocolate presentation, with white chocolate pannacotta, dark chocolate fondant, and an interesting chocolate ravioli. Next came another unique take on the classic tiramisu, which came enclosed in a hollow chocolate sphere. Finally, we tried the Tuscan raspberry semifreddo cake filled with a delicious honey gelato. They just kept getting better and better - yummy.

Overall, the experience at Circo is excellent. The décor is unique and quirky, the staff is professional and knowledgeable, and the food is superb. ✤

it has been quite a while since The Clubhouse in Zayed Sports City (ZSC) closed its doors, and the social spot has been sorely missed. Its replacement has been a long time

coming, but now, The Sportsman’s Arms has opened its doors to all.

Touted as a ‘family-friendly gastro-pub and sports bar’, the venue is keen to attract both sporting teams and members of the general public alike through its doors, with sports playing on numerous screens, a tempting menu of food and drink, and even a children’s terrace/play area for the kids to run around in while the adults partake.

The menu itself is classic pub fare with some flair, and certainly does the venue justice. We started with a Steak Tartare that, though tasty, was a tad heavy on the Worcestershire sauce that overpowered all of the other flavours. Fortunately, we love Worcestershire sauce, so we weren’t too bothered. Our other starter was a lovely and crisp Apple and Blue Cheese salad with toasted walnuts and a balsamic dressing, which was excellent.

For mains, we had a delicious Shepherd’s Pie with equally tasty roasted carrots in a lovely glaze, and an absolute mouthwatering New York Strip steak with a creamy blue cheese sauce which we mopped up every last drop of with the thick-cut steak fries. Overall, it was an enjoyable meal of commendable pub grub.

As for the venue itself, in some ways the Sportsman’s Arms is a sure fire winner. It is obvious that a lot of thought and consideration has been given to the layout of the venue as both gastro pub and sports bar. On one hand, you have the dining areas of comfortable booths and tables for people to enjoy a cosy meal. On the other, you have the area dedicated to sports, with bench tables and numerous strategically placed screens so that everyone who wants to can see the action, as well as the standard giant screen at one end.

The décor boasts the typical padded leather seating with wood and brass finishings that you’d expect to find in a good gastro pub. However, being very new, the place still has a rather manufactured and sterile feel to it. It desperately needs some details to make it feel ‘lived in’ – sports memorabilia, chalk boards with specials

on the walls or framed pictures of great sporting moments from ZSC, etc – the type of stuff that makes a pub feel ‘local’.

Perhaps these things come with time, or perhaps it’s something that the management can work on. Only then will it have the homely and inviting atmosphere of a true sports pub.

The intention is there, and the foundation is excellent, plus the food is great, so let’s allow it to become the venue it should be! ✤
