Celebrate 100 Years of RVing!Have you heard?! This year marks the 100th anniversary of the RV

industry. While the concept of RVing has its roots in covered wagons and

camping, 1910 is cited as the official beginning of this great American

pastime. The mass-produced auto campers and camping trailers built

that year are considered the forerunners of today’s RVs by three

prominent RV historians: renowned RV collector David Woodworth,

RV/MH Hall of Fame and museum archivist Al Hesselbart and Smithsonian

Institution curator Roger White. Since then, a unique way of travel has flourished, during war and peace, and

no matter the economic climate.

Throughout 2010, the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) is leading a centennial celebration

with an array of exciting events, promotions and initiatives to highlight the RVing of yesterday, today and

tomorrow. Get involved in the festivities at www.rvcentennial.org.

Forget the Myths, Go RVingBY eRIcA sTReIsFeLD

If you’ve never gone RVing, it may seem like uncharted territory — literally. But that’s no excuse. We’re here to cast aside some of the common myths about RVing and offer the facts.

MYtH: I can’t afford to buy a coach.FAct: RVing is actually pretty easy on your wallet. Your flexibility is unlimited, which is more than you can say for hotels and airline tickets. And you can save up to 61 percent on vacation costs compared with other forms of travel. If you’re not sure that you want to buy an RV, you can always start out by renting one.

MYtH: camping is not really my thing.FAct: RVing is completely different than camping out in a tent. Today’s RVs come equipped with kitchens, baths and living areas, as well as TVs, sound systems and central air conditioning. Most campgrounds also get cell phone coverage and offer Wi-Fi. Plus, you can sleep in your own bed with your own linens and pillows.

MYtH: The kids will get bored. FAct: Quite the contrary — RVing is very kid-friendly. They’ll feel right at home with all their favorite toys, games, movies and books. You can bring the family dog, too. They’ll become fast friends with fellow RVing kids at the campground, and many sites offer swimming pools, mini golf, petting zoos and plenty of activities.

MYtH: A big RV will limit where I can go. FAct: completely false. There are RV campgrounds all over the state that are strategically located close to major attractions. Just pull your coach up to the site, and you’re set. Not convinced? check out the directory of campgrounds that starts on page 18.

We’ve all heard the stories: An air conditioner hums to a stop and trips the breaker. A TV suddenly reduces to a thumbnail image. A neighbor plugs into the campground pedestal, and your microwave quits in mid-cycle. A lightning storm is reported in the next county, and the lights inside your coach suddenly become very bright. I think you get the idea.

+ THE diAGNOSiSThere are myriad electrical problems that plague RVers, no matter the season. Collectively known as “power line problems,” they create a palette of dilemmas that we must be aware of and protect against. Why? Quantum leaps in RV electrical technology mean that many components in our coaches are now controlled by electronic boards and microprocessors. Not only have computers, e-mail and Web browsing permeated the RV world, but with the push of a single button you can now also deploy a patio awning or extend a room addition. Think of it as the electronic age of RVing.

+ THE CAUSEAccording to electrical industry studies, voltage transients, or any short-term disturbance on the power line, represent 12-15 percent of all AC power line problems. Transients can be caused by a variety of factors — lightning strikes, utility grid switching, outdated campground pedestal hookups, faulty

wiring, motor load switching and improper grounding or bonding of power lines, to name a few.

These problems can originate from the campground itself or from within your own RV. It is important to understand that given the state-of-the-art technology we have in our RVs today, all AC power lines, as well as campground phone, cable TV and data communication lines, must be commonly grounded or bonded together to prevent transient voltages from entering sensitive equipment.

One study shows that surges and impulse spikes can occur as frequently as twice per hour in any typical residence. In larger, more industrial campgrounds, they can be more frequent and severe, with spikes as high as 5,600 volts during lightning storms. A study by IBM in various locations across the United States revealed an average of 50.7 voltage spikes per month. Another study showed that many locales will experience approximately 25 power line disturbances per year, 87 percent

steady-state Voltage: Normal voltage for a system that stays constant for 10 seconds or longer.

Power Failure: A zero-voltage condition lasting for more than one cycle (1/60 of a second).

Dropout: A portion of the sine wave that has a lower value, or is missing altogether, but only

Doc’s WIsDoM on VoLtAGe tRAnsIentsThe Ac shoreline at the campground pedestal is the lifeblood for all things Ac in your RV, but it can also be the pathway for power problems that can damage many components in your coach. understanding these terms is the first step to finding a cure.

of which will probably be sags below 96 VAC. Voltages below 105 VAC can be very damaging to items such as rooftop air conditioners.

The bottom line is that “power line problems” are severe, they occur often, and the damage can be substantial, which usually means expensive. What goes mostly unnoticed is the cumulative effect on sensitive equipment in the RV after enduring spikes, surges, dips, notches, etc. The long-term performance deterioration of some delicate components may not surface until later on, but in the meantime your equipment is performing at a substandard level.

+ THE PRESCRiPTiONOne of the best solutions is to install a spike suppressor/surge protector in your RV. A number of suppliers now provide these protective devices for the RV industry. A surge protector acts like an electrical sponge, absorbing excess voltage to protect your RV components. RV surge protection should include the ability to completely shut off the

incoming power before damaging transients can reach sensitive equipment. They should also have the capability to monitor and detect high- and low-voltage conditions, and to interrupt the incoming power until the system has returned to safer levels.

Most surge protectors utilize MOVs (Metal Oxide Varistors) to protect against transient voltages. Quality devices should have a minimum of three MOVs in the circuitry. The key to this technology is determined by the “clamping voltage rating,” also called the “let-through voltage rating.” The lower the rating, the better the protection. In addition, Underwriters Laboratories (UL), has developed a minimum standard for spike suppressors. The surge protector you choose to install in your RV should meet or exceed the requirements of UL 1449.

I encourage you to look into transient voltage protection for your RV’s electrical system. If you truly value that electrical equipment and are well aware of the consequences, it can be considered cheap insurance at the very least.

And remember, RVing is more than a hobby, it’s a lifestyle!

for a small portion of any given cycle.

Blackout: A total power failure lasting several seconds to many hours.

Brownout: A planned reduction of available power, usually done to prepare for a period of heavy electrical consumption.

sag: A cycle-to-cycle reduction of power (of at least 10 percent of the average voltage) that lasts for half of one cycle or longer. It might occur when your RVing neighbor first turns on his rooftop air conditioner, and it can affect devices such as microwaves, TVs and DVD players.

Dip: A shorter sag (e.g. a lightbulb flicker).

surge: A cycle-to-cycle increase of power (the opposite of a sag) that is typically below 500 total volts.

swell: A series of long-term surges that lasts from a few seconds to several minutes.

Impulse: A very short disturbance of either polarity (up or down) that lasts between 0.5 and 100 microseconds.

notch: An out-of phase, under-voltage impulse, which is similar to a dropout but usually too quick to see (up to several milliseconds in duration). For every notch, there is usually an immediate spike that follows.

spike: An in-phase, over-voltage impulse that typically lasts for less than 1 millisecond. spikes are the most detrimental to sensitive circuitry.

RV makers set their sights on ‘green’ consumers

BY ANGeLIQue H. cAFFReY

Why Green RVing? It probably wouldn’t shock you to hear that now more than ever people want to spend their money on products that they feel are better for the earth. From the cereal they buy to the light bulbs they use, they’re consciously making choices that fit their convictions.

According to a survey released by Simmons, consumers who admit to living in a “green” way are on the rise, representing almost one-third of all buyers. And since many RV enthusiasts are lovers of the outdoors, they have a natural desire to keep the planet safer. When they invest in an RV, they want a product that resonates with their eco-beliefs. In response, several RV manufacturers have made it their missions to provide greener varieties of RVs and campers.

“From an environmental aspect, it’s the right thing to do,” says Scott Tuttle, president of Livin’ Lite Recreational Vehicles. “From a marketing perspective, it’s also a good thing … because more and more consumers are becoming environmentally focused, and they are looking for little ways they can help the environment.”

Of course, going green isn’t a

simple prospect, as the term “green” has a wide variety of connotations, depending on who you ask. Therefore, instead of trying to be all things to all people, most RV makers have focused on a few niche “green” areas, such as making their models more aerodynamic, lighter, smaller, more fuel-efficient and/or less dependent upon wood.

RV companies have responded in significant ways to this consumer drive (no pun intended!) for greener options, and many have “gone green” in some way. Check out a few of the trendsetters.

Damon Boasts AerodynamicsIn September 2008, Damon Motor Coach surprised the public at America’s Largest RV Show in Hershey, when it introduced the

tHe GReen

RV scene

When you think of RVing, the first words that come to mind aren’t usually “environmentally friendly.” After

all, RVs are big, bulky and create a burden on the environment — right?

Wrong — you’re in for a pleasant surprise! The “gas guzzlers” of previous generations have given way to

a whole new breed of recreation vehicles aimed squarely at consumers who want the benefits of

RVing without feeling like they’re harming the earth in the process. From extra-light towable trailers to

full-size motor coaches, today’s newest RV models are sleeker, leaner and, most importantly, greener.

6 exPLoRe PeNNsYLVANIA 2010

Page 9: Explore Pennsylvania

Avanti, a fuel-efficient, Class A diesel that gets 14.5-plus miles per gallon.

What makes the Avanti green aside from its fuel efficiency? Quite simply, its aerodynamic design. Thanks to state-of-the-art engineering, the RV is sleek and attractive. It’s more than 31 feet long and built for live-in luxury, green-style.

Livin’ Lite Makes It LighterIn late 2008, Livin’ Lite took eco-RVing to a new level by introducing a line of innovative travel trailers. Its initial Quicksilver model was quickly named the Roamin’ Times’ “Green RV of the Year.” Livin’ Lite RVs are constructed with composite materials instead of wood. That means they’re not susceptible to rotting or mold,

and it also makes them much lighter and stronger.

Winnebago Goes for MPGsWinnebago has also gone into more eco-conscious product development. Introduced in September 2009, its Via is considered the most fuel-efficient Class A on the market, with the 2010 model listed at an estimated 15-plus miles per gallon. It’s an alternative for consumers wishing to enjoy the perks of RVing while remaining true to their desire to reduce carbon emissions.

In June 2009, Winnebago unveiled the Adventurer hybrid concept RV, featuring the industry’s first hybrid-electric chassis. This technology could not only bring improved fuel efficiency, but also reduce noise and emissions, improve acceleration and reduce maintenance. As part

of testing for this model, Brad and Amy Herzog, spokespersons for the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA), traveled in the concept hybrid RV during summer 2009 to promote the benefits of RV travel.

What’s next?Though it was once thought that the green movement might be a

flash-in-the-pan occurrence, it’s probably safe to say that it’s here to stay. As consumers continue to demand further options, you should start noticing even more environmentally friendly RVs and fifth wheels in the coming years. Ah, the power of consumers — don’t underestimate it. Just remember to do your part to help make RVing greener.

RVing greener is not just about the RV itself — it’s also about what you’re doing to stay environmentally conscious. No matter what kind of RV you have, make sure to follow these simple guidelines. Mother earth will thank you.

evolution of the RV campground

Why have so many RV campgrounds radically changed the face of RVing from basic to deluxe? It’s hard to put your finger on the exact reason, but we have a few in mind.

As part of today’s generation of RV travelers, many of you are looking for vacations where you can relax in the great outdoors but not have to give up everyday creature comforts and social activities. Besides, if you’re investing money in a state-of-the-art RV, why not take it to the Taj Mahal of campgrounds?

Rebecca Lenington, executive vice president of the PA Recreation Vehicle and Camping Association (PRVCA), has been in the industry for more than 33 years. She agrees that today’s traveler is more complex.

“Consumers may crave the pristine ambiance that only nature provides, but after a long week on the job, they want to relax with their own particular selection of creature comforts close at hand,” Lenington says. “They simply walk out the door and climb into their home on wheels, and then they’re off to their next RV adventure.”

Recognizing this shift in what RVing individuals, couples and families want, campgrounds have changed their appearances accordingly. Instead of offering just the essentials, they’ve begun experimenting with new amenities — on-site masseuses, gym facilities and even gourmet meals delivered right to your RV. This, in turn, has caused other campgrounds to follow suit in an effort to woo vacationers looking for something more upscale than just a tiny plot of land and basic hookups.

Have you checked out the directory of campgrounds that starts on page 18? It’s no coincidence that the word “resort” figures prominently into many of their names. That title seems only fitting for places with lavish amenities, including indoor/outdoor swimming pools, saunas, hot tubs, miniature golf courses and pristine restroom accommodations. some even have their own currencies and movie theaters! sure, there are still places that offer a more rustic feel, but if you’re an RVing enthusiast who wants a luxurious getaway, there’s no shortage of possibilities in Pennsylvania.

You probably also want more bang for your buck. Who doesn’t? You have the discretionary income to spend on RVing, but, let’s face it, your expectations are high. Having campgroundwide Wi-Fi access is great, but it’s practically mainstream at this point. You’re craving extras like Laundromat access, fitness

centers, newspaper service and more.

Times have changed in the world of RVing, and Burt Macki, general manager of the Drummer Boy Camping Resort in Gettysburg, understands that all too well. Macki managed upscale hotels for 30 years, but

all that experience didn’t fully prepare him for the differences between yesterday’s RV campgrounds and today’s RV resorts. Drummer Boy has become a destination in itself.

“It’s no longer like when we were kids,” Macki says. “We have three-bedroom cottages. Our activity hall can accommodate 300 people. We have an activities director. It’s hotel-style, but not ‘cookie-cutter’ hotel-style.”

What is a true “vacation” all about these days, anyway? As Americans, we are accustomed to a fairly high level of customer service in everything we do. A vacation is no exception — you want RV campgrounds to exceed your expectations. Simply put, you’re looking for a place that’s comfortable and packed with fun for the whole family, without blowing your budget. For campgrounds, this has translated into some serious investment in facilities. With more than 7 million RVers across the United States in a given year, it’s a no-brainer.

Klaas Bakker, owner of Lake-in-Wood Camping Resort in Lancaster County, knows how motivating it can be for families to have a place where they can get back to nature, spend time with each other, and still get the “royal

treatment” of a fine inn mixed with a bit of amusement park magic. That’s why Lake-in-Wood’s goal is to create a true camping paradise. RVers will find a kids’ club and a strong sense of community, thanks to a quirky “gnome” theme throughout the resort.

“We have our own ‘gnome’ money … you can hop on the trolley — the ‘gnome mobile’ — and go to the pool. It’s like a little town! People seem to like that very much.”

What comes next?

There’s no crystal ball to indicate what the next level of luxury for RV campgrounds will be. There could certainly be a return to yesterday’s “no-frills” camping experience, but given the trends over the past few decades, that’s unlikely to happen. If campsites across the country are any indication, the next generation of RVing could reach even higher levels of luxury and convenience.

There are already campsites nationwide that offer perks such as a gated entry to the campground, private beach access, expertly landscaped RV sites, pet parks, private movie

theaters and Broadway-style dinner shows. As more campgrounds adjust their offerings to match these types of accommodations, the bar will no doubt be raised.

So what does the future hold? “The sky’s the limit,” says Brad Rhone, PRVCA chairman and owner of Rhone’s Travel Trailers. “With all the new amenities available, RV resorts will be a leader in providing all the comforts a traveler could ever dream about or need.”

In the end, these changes mean one thing — as an RV enthusiast, you can honestly find anything you want. If you’re seeking a rustic experience, you can get it. If you want a middle-of-the-road RV adventure, that exists, too. And if you desire posh surroundings and amenities, they’re out there, and getting swankier by the day. Your perfect RV getaway is just a short (or long) ride away.

Bakker is certain that RVing will always be big, regardless of the economy, as long as campgrounds listen to their customers and continue to exceed expectations.

But perhaps Macki best sums up RVing: “It’s an experience versus an overnight stay.”

Attendees Flock toAmerica’s LargestRV Show

Pennsylvania RV & Camping Show hits record attendance and sales BY eRIcA sTReIsFeLD

What do you think about the economy? Not so great, right? Do you think people are spending much time thinking about vacations and leisure time? Probably not. But you wouldn’t know it by the 2009 Pennsylvania RV & camping show’s numbers. The 31,710 people who attended the show at Hershey’s GIANT center on sept. 16-20, marked its largest-ever crowd. That’s almost a 14 percent increase in show-goers from last year. u

Despite the recession, sales at the show also hit high numbers. Prices seemed to be more reasonable than ever, and low interest rates and government tax incentives made purchases extra appealing. As Nick Palm of Tiffin Motorhomes Inc. reports, “Tiffin’s retail sales were up 235 percent over retail sales last year. Consumer attitudes were very positive, which reflected in the increased sales.”

Even on the first public day of the show, attendees noticed that RVs were a hot commodity this year. “It’s nice to see that people are buying … it’s amazing, especially since the show has just started,” notes Rhonda Daub of Muir. “There are some great deals. You come here and get the fever.”

Could RVing be the recession-proof solution to vacationing? Gloria Isenberg of Reinholds thinks so. “We’re looking for the perfect one. Prices seem to be decent, and I’m seeing a lot of ‘sold’ signs on the trailers, which is pretty encouraging given the economy.”

The success of the show was thanks in part to its host, the PA Recreation Vehicle and Camping Association (PRVCA). But the other ingredient was simply that consumers have realized the appeal of RVing. “Go RVing has done a wonderful job delivering the message to consumers that the RV lifestyle offers great value to families, and we continued that message into the marketing of the show,” says Rebecca Lenington, executive vice president of PRVCA.

Like Moths to a campfireMaybe you’ve only been RVing once. Maybe you

live in your motorhome full-time. Either way, this show is for you. There’s a reason that RVers and RVers-in-the-making flock to America’s Largest RV Show. With a name like that, why wouldn’t you want to attend? Bonus: You get to be the first to lay your eyes on what’s new in the RV industry.

For starters, this year featured more than 16 football fields of new RVs from 59 manufacturers. From small campers to full-size motorhomes, the different types of RVs on display catered to every taste and budget. Inside the GIANT Center were more than 100 vendors, which showcased everything from folding tables and portable satellite TV systems to motorcycle carriers.

Some attendees, like Donald Hughes of Harrisburg, Pa., are regulars to the show, and have dreams of someday owning an RV. They find comfort in the fact that this show offers many affordable RV options. “I like the idea of RVs, and I like the idea of buying RVs, so I constantly come to the show to see what’s new,” says Hughes, who has attended the show eight years in a row.

John Kee came all the way from Toronto, Canada, to explore the show, and he aspires to own an RV so that he can give up “hoteling.” Being new to the show and to RVing, the event is a prime opportunity to learn about what options are available. “We were impressed by the number of different manufacturers there are, which of course, makes it much harder to choose,” says Kee. “There were certainly more units outside than I was expecting.”

from dealer to dealer can be exhausting. The Pennsylvania RV & Camping Show offers a hands-on experience to help you decide what you want in an RV. That’s why Sam Newsom from Roanoke, Va., wanted to attend the show, and stay multiple days. “We’re looking for a Class A diesel pusher, and so we wanted to go someplace where there’s plenty of them to get a better idea of layout, color scheme and options.”

Discovering the trendsThe best part about having access to so many 2010 RVs in one spot is being able to do a little comparison shopping. It’s also an ideal way to figure out the latest trends in the industry.

This year, with people becoming more conscientious about living a “green” lifestyle,

it was nice to see so many manufacturers introducing environmentally friendly RV options. Eliminating wood in the construction, and in general creating lighter and more aerodynamic RVs, has become a common practice for many manufacturers. Others took more elaborate green measures, such as offering mattresses made of recycled water bottles.

MotoRIZeD RVsIf you’re driving, there’s no need to go outside to get into the living areas. Motorized RVs are manufactured as one convenient unit.

The RV Model Rundown

u The Pennsylvania RV & camping show had hundreds of models on display, so how do you figure out what’s what? Get a quick breakdown of the types of RVs that you can see at the show. It really comes down to what you’re looking for — towable or motorized.

to consumers that the RV lifestyle offers great value to families,

In addition, there seemed to be lines of people wanting to get a look inside campers with bunk houses, which are ideal for families. Attendees also showed interest in RVs with toy haulers, something that’s newer to the industry. Toy haulers make it easy to take along your golf carts, motorcycles and bicycles.

seminars for an RV educationAs if you don’t have enough to take in, you can’t forget about the top-notch seminars going on every day of the show. Topics run the gamut, from shopping for an RV to finding an exciting RV destination. What type of RV is right for you? Do you have to clean the undercarriage of your RV? Can you RV in Alaska? You’ll get to interact with the speakers and go home with the answers you need. These are a few of the popular seminar offerings:

• RV Adventure Videos – Catch hourly videos featuring RV destinations around the

country, such as the East Coast, Gulf Coast and Alaska.

• TheRVDoctor – Gary Bunzer shares tips on maintaining a healthy RV, inside and out.

• ExtendedWarrantiesandService – Find out the pros and cons of having a plan.

• TipsonChoosinganRV – National RV writer Bob Marx offers a logical approach for deciding which RV is right for your particular lifestyle.

• RVSafetyGuidelines – Learn the proper weight limits and tire-safety tips for your RV, as well as details on supplemental braking systems.

Who doesn’t want to enjoy a great vacation? RVing is the perfect, affordable way to spend quality time with your family and avoid many of the hassles travelers can sometimes experience on other types of trips. With RVing you don’t need to worry about baggage restrictions, what to do with your four-legged friends or incur the expensive costs of eating out, and it’s one of the most affordable ways to travel! RV adventures have also proved to be a healthier way to vacation. More RVing families get outdoors to walk, bike and hike trails and experience all that nature has to offer. Being in charge of your schedule is also a great way to reduce the stress that many travelers experience when trying to keep a tight

timeline. RVing allows you to go where you want, when you want, with no planes to catch or trains to miss. The information provided in this magazine will help make your RV travels an enjoyable experience. The directory portion of the guide lists businesses that are just a phone call away and are available to make your Pennsylvania getaway as relaxing as possible. These resources can truly be a valuable asset while on the road, so don’t hesitate to pick up the phone. If you happen to travel our way in September, join us for America’s Largest RV Show, held Sept. 15-19, 2010, in Hershey — The Sweetest Place On Earth®. The show floor offers everything you could possibly need to RV. With more than 21 acres of RVs on

site, there’s something for everyone, from the smallest truck camper to the largest motorhome. Industry days for related businesses are held Sept. 13 and 14. For more information, visit www.largestRVshow.com. Also, if you are thinking of making a career change, the PA RV & Camping Education Foundation has developed two programs dedicated to training RV technicians. This field is in high demand, so check out the educational opportunities at www.prvca.org. Enjoy your RV adventure, and spend the time of your life — not your life savings!
