PenLight has an ongoing dialogue with the people that represent its members interests in the state capital. Last month the board of directors and senior staff sat down with representatives from the 26th Legislative District to update them on legislative issues and the co-op’s activities. Representative Jan Angel and Senator Nathan Schlicher were able to attend the presentation and meeting to discuss the many successes and future challenges of PenLight. CEO Jafar Taghavi presented information about PenLight’s investment in Harvest Wind and the utility’s commitment to meet all requirements of the Renewable Portfolio Standard known as Initiative 937. The legislators heard about PenLight’s focus on improving reliability through investments in undergrounding, implementation of new technologies to detect and respond more efficiently to outages, and an aggressive vegetation management program. The legislators also heard about utility issues that could come before them in the legislature and how these proposals could affect PenLight. PenLight would like to express appreciation to the elected representatives in Olympia for their time to learn more about the utility and their support and work they do for PenLight members. P e n i n s u l a L i g h t C o m p a n y N e w s l e t t e r SEPT / OCT 2013

It’s that time of year where we show off prized zucchinis. If there is one crop we successfully grow here in the PNW, it’s zucchini, and we always seem to have more than we can consume. If you leave your car unlocked this time of the year at work, you might find zucchini waiting for you in the front seat. Don’t forget that family and friends will be forcing you to take some zucchini home with you, so limit your social visits through October. The recipe this month for zucchini bread should help reduce your zucchini inventory.

Ready In: 1 Hour 40 MinutesServings: 24 (2 loaves)

INGREDIENTS:• 3 cups all-purpose flour• 1 teaspoon salt• 1 teaspoon baking soda• 1 teaspoon baking powder• 3 teaspoons ground cinnamon• 3 eggs• 1 cup vegetable oil

• 2 1/4 cups white sugar

• 3 teaspoons vanilla extract• 2 cups grated zucchini• 1 cup chopped walnuts

DIRECTIONS:1. Grease & flour two 8 x 4 inch pans. Preheat oven to 325º F.

2. Sift flour, salt, baking powder, soda, & cinnamon together in a bowl.

3. Beat eggs, oil, vanilla, & sugar together in a large bowl. Add sifted ingredients to the creamed mixture, beat well. Stir in zucchini & nuts until well combined. Pour batter into prepared pans.

4. Bake for 40 to 60 minutes, or until tester inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in pan on rack for 20 minutes. Remove bread from pan, and completely cool.

RaCE fOR a SOlDIER was created by Gig Harbor resident Leslie Mayne as a reaction to the skyrocketing suicide rate among U.S. soldiers. Spurred by the tragic loss of her soldier son, she strove to not only shine a light on this epidemic, but to create support for programs that will help alleviate the PTSD that lies at the base of this problem.

Race For a Soldier supports alternative therapies for soldiers returning home. Most are not funded by the U.S. Government or Branches of Service and most are underfunded. Programs include equestrian programs (Horses For Heroes), canine programs, scuba therapy and other treatments that have proven to be incredibly effective and desired by our soldiers. Now in its third year, this year’s race encompasses activities for all ages and capabilities, including the half-marathon, a 2 mile & Kid’s Fun Run, a pre-race day Prayer Breakfast, and the SWING For A Soldier Golf Tournament. Race day is Sunday, September 29th, with packet pick-up beginning at 6:30 am at the Gig Harbor YMCA. The Prayer Breakfast and SWING For A Soldier Golf Tournament will take place Friday, September 27th.

For more information, registration, breakfast tickets and donation opportunities, visit www.raceforasoldier.org.

PREPay isn’t a new concept for many businesses. Many of us are signed up for Good to Go and use a form of prepay every time we cross the Narrows bridge to Tacoma. PenLight started testing prepay internally in 2012 with several of our employees and went live in February 2013. Since then we have been offering prepay to members who fall behind in paying their monthly bills as an alternative to the traditional post-paid billing and collection requirements. Prepay is a self-managed payment option that’s suitable for members whose income schedule doesn’t match their due date or who can’t afford the security deposit if their credit isn’t ideal. We are now offering prepay to all of our members who might want this type of payment option.

WITh PREPay yOu NO lONGER havE ThE fOllOWING :

1. PAPER BILL: You no longer receive a monthly billing statement; check your current daily balance online or on our automated phone system 24 hours a day.

2. DUE DATE: Since you’re no longer receiving a paper bill, you “pay as you go” similar to putting gas in your car.

3. LATE FEES: With no due date, there are no late fees.

4. DEPOSIT: A deposit isn’t required, since you pay as you go.

5. RECONNECT FEE: There is no charge to reconnect the service if the account is disconnected.

Enrolling in prepay requires a minimum balance of $25 or enough funds for 10 days of usage, whichever is greater, and a $25 setup fee. An email, text or voice message is sent to the consumer alerting them when their account balance is getting low. This occurs when they have 7-, 3- and 1-day balances remaining. Prepay calculates the dollar and kilowatt usage per day for each individual account. This is viewable by logging into your prepay account from our website, www.penlight.org.

If you’re interested in prepay, contact our Member Services Department at 253.857.5950.
