If you know of anyone who is ill, is in the hospital, has had a death in the family, etc., please call Mary Bennett so she

can offer our encouragement/support with a card or call.

We are saddened to learn of the passing of two of our Welcome Club members: Richard Neilssien passed away in the early morning hours of September 19, 2017. He had undergone multiple surgeries during the past year. He would have been pleased that his life ended at home and he never had to set foot in a nursing home. A celebration of his life was held on October 21st, at the Clubhouse of Point Evans On The

Narrows. Lindamae Cleveland a past member of our club (2016) , has died from injuries sustained in a fall from a ladder. No further details are available.

Welcome Club Members’ Doings in our Community My name is Richard Russell, a member of the GHWC, and volunteer with the First Tee of South Puget Sound. The goal of the First Tee, a national organization, is to impact the lives of young people, ages 4 through 17, by providing educational programs that build character and instill life - enhancing values through the game of golf. Nine (9) core values are introduced and reinforced throughout the program. These core values are honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy, and judgement. I volunteer at Madrona Links Golf Course two days a week during the summer (June - August) assisting a First Tee instructor with students. It is fun and interesting from dealing with first and second graders to high school level students who know little of the game of golf. Placing a golf club in a child’s hands for the first time and the assisting them through learning the many aspects of the game is interesting and fun. Class numbers range from as few as four up to seventeen students and consist of but not limited to drills in putting, chipping and hitting balls.

Activity Groups All About Art - Joann Hale (360) 329-7410) There is a new group in the making!!! Members of this group would consider they are artists, but would not take it too seriously! They would love to paint using different media including pastels, oils, acrylics; they would love to throw a wheel for pottery work; they would love to walk in the woods and go down on their knees to take the perfect picture of the emerging spring flowers; they would love to buy all the beads from Michael’s to make fine jewelry. This new group would take field trips to art galleries and museums, visit local art shows and share ideas and concepts regarding various mediums. We're off to Bainbridge Island and the art museum, and then decide on an art project based on the field trip for the following month. If that’s something you would love to do as well, send an email to Joann Hale ([email protected]) or call her at 360-329-7410.

Blade & Spade - Nancy Christopher (253) 265-2863 Blade & Spade usually meets the fourth Tuesday of each month, approximately ten times a year for lectures, tours and field trips within the state (weather permitting). If you are interested in joining our garden group, please contact me. A combined November/December holiday outing is planned for December 5th, 2017. We will be touring Watson’s Greenhouse and Nursery. As usual, we will meet at the Galaxy Theatre in Uptown Gig Harbor. Please be there no later than 10:00 a.m. to carpool to Puyallup. We will have a Christmas lunch at the Flowerpot Cafe which is located within the nursery.

Bocce Group Harris Atkins (253) 858-6270 We generally play from May through September based on the weather and the condition of the fields. We play twice a month and set the days and time at the first meeting of the new season. This year we played on the 2nd and 4th Friday of each month at 2 pm. We play on the beautiful “Green” in front of the Gig Harbor Civic Center on Grandview.

We use an informal approach. I maintain a contact list and send out reminder e-mails. We select two-person teams and match opponents randomly among those who attend. It’s a simple game to learn but can be tricky to master. The group is open to everyone in the Welcome Club regardless of experience level and you can play when you’re available. If you would like to be added to the contact list or have questions, send me an e-mail ([email protected]) or give me a call at the above phone number. Book Clubs Want to make some new friends who also love to read? Looking for a place to go to talk about great books? Book groups are a great venue for both of those activities. Books are selected for reading and discussion by the members. Each member is expected to host during the year. If you would like to participate in any one of these groups, please call the coordinator listed for information. All three Book Clubs will welcome new members!

Bunco 1 Shirley Wohlman (253) 851-4063 Bunco needs some new faces to join our group on a regular basis or as a sub. Meetings are 2nd Wednesday of each month at 12:30 p.m. at members’ homes. It is really fun, no skills needed, games are easy, and there is time to socialize, get acquainted with each other, have some desserts and maybe even add to your mad money when you win! Please call Shirley Wohlman 851-4063.

Canasta Group - Joanne Bennett (253) 509-0123

Canasta players meet every Friday at Canterwood Country Club, 12606 54th Ave NW, (253) 851-1845. We play from 10:30 AM to around 3:00 PM. New players are welcome; it is easy to learn this rummy-based game and we are happy to train. We buy lunch at Canterwood from a menu with budget-friendly options (no cash, credit card required). Coffee, tea, water and cookies are complimentary. If you would like to be added to the roster, please contact Joanne Bennett at [email protected] or call (253) 509-0123.

Cocktailers Betty Ringlee (253)265-0965 Carolyn Folsom (253) 549-0085 Cocktailers held some great parties over the summer! We are lucky to have gracious hosts with beautiful homes. Thanks again to Dave and Betty Ringlee, June Benoit and Debbie Smith, Carolyn and Phil Sawyer and the Meissners for opening their homes and, Ollie and Nancy Christopher, and Dottie Pringle and Sharon Panchot for all their help as cohosts. Caroline and Gerry Smith will host at the Lakes for October. Carolyn Folsom and Betty Ringlee have been the Cocktailer coordinators for the last 3 years. It is time for someone new to take over, please volunteer so Cocktailers can continue past October. Call Carolyn or Betty to discuss the details and take the reins. Thank you!

Computer Club Vic Menchaca (253) 851-2985

The computer group meets at the Gig Harbor Library main conference room on the first Thursday of the month at 2 pm. Please let me know if you would like to join us and if you have any topics you would like to discuss.

ATTENTION!! Double-Deck Pinochle Players – Joyce Fischlin (253) 858-3898 We are going to add another table (four players) to our monthly Pinochle group. This is your opportunity to join and become a permanent member. We meet on the third Tuesday evening of the month at The Lodge at Mallard’s Landing at 6:00 pm. We are congenial – not cut-throat (well, maybe one is) – players and we welcome members at all levels. We play, visit and eat. Now what could be better than that? If you are interested, please call Joyce Fischlin at (253) 858-3898 or send an email to [email protected]

Friday Night Out Nancy Roberts 916-591-8171 [email protected] Friday Night Out is composed of 10 couples who celebrate the first Friday of each month. Members meet in the host couples home for appetizers & cocktails, followed by dinner at a restaurant of the host choice. Dessert and fellowship follows dinner at the host home. We are presently full but if you would like to be called when an opening occurs, please call or e-mail Nancy Roberts.

Genealogy Group Harris Atkins (253) 858-6270) As we approach winter, this becomes a great time to devote some time for working on family history and your fellow Welcome Club members are here to help. We generally meet on the 3rd Friday of the month based on the availability of conference rooms; from 2:45pm to 4:30pm in the large conference room at the Peninsula Branch of the Pierce County Library in Gig Harbor. Typically, we begin our meeting discussing some aspect of research, e.g. data sources, research methods, records keeping; followed by a general question and answer period. Discussion topics will be sent out by reminder e-mail about a week before the meeting. We are an informal group and our objective is to explore family history research techniques and tools, share experiences and discuss problems in our research. The only qualifications are an interest in family history and a willingness to contribute to the discussions. You can come every month or only when we are discussing a topic in which you are interested. Experience in genealogy is not required. If you have questions you can contact me at [email protected] or at the above phone number

Let’s Do Dinner Debbie Smith (253) 851-3955

Members are encouraged to call for information. We would love to have more participants; it is a great relationship building opportunity to have an evening together in a casual but cozy atmosphere. Hosts volunteer about once every 8 months; with more members it would be less often, it is limited to 8 guests per host with a second host in the event of more participation. You do not need to have a large home or provide an entire meal. It is group participation with the host providing an entrée and wine, guests providing appetizers, sides and a dessert. It would be wonderful to watch this group grow. The camaraderie is very enjoyable. We meet on the third Saturday of every month. Come join us...

Lunch Bunch Grace Rowe (253) 851-6200 New members have a wonderful opportunity to meet and make new friends. Old members a chance to reconnect with people they have not seen for a while. Everyone is most welcome to join us at different restaurants each month. We meet on the 2nd Thursday of the month. If you did not sign up to attend at the previous month, you should call Grace or the hostess for the current month to have your name added to the reservation list. We do not call to remind you. If you have to cancel your reservation a phone call is most appreciated. We lunch - Gig Harbor to Port Orchard, University Place and Tacoma. November lunch will be at the Greenhouse Restaurant in Uptown Gig Harbor, 11:30 a.m. on November 9th. Perhaps about an hour is what we enjoy for lunch. Come help us to plan where to try next. Thank you all for the support these past years. See you for lunch.

Mah-Jongg Group Rita Sabins (253) 226-9933 Mah Jongg group: We meet every Tuesday at Canterwood Country Club, 12606 54th Ave NW, 253- 851-1845, playing from 10:30 to about 3:00 PM.. Lunches are bought at the Club but; they supply us with free coffee, teas, water and hot cookies! We play the American version with a card. New players are always welcome and would love to have you. Would you like to be placed on our weekly reminder list? Reminder are sent out Saturday or Sunday to see how many tables we have, that way we know how many games to bring

Men’s Breakfast Group Bill Evans (253) 265-0049

The Welcome Club Men’s Breakfast group meets the 2nd Saturday of each month. We normally have a program presented by members of our group. Call Bill for more information or if you would like to be put on the notification list.

Men’s Golf Jim Terry (253) 509-2557

The Golf Group has wrapped up another GREAT season. As of this writing they have played twenty seven (27) rounds of golf at thirteen (13) different courses this year. Trophy Lakes seems to be a favorite. Harris Atkins hosted the annual "get this bag out of my house" event at McCormick Woods. The event was preceded by a scramble which Greg Roberts, Randy Pishek and Bob Himes walk away with at five under par. Dick Russell had the longest drive with Jim Terry and Gregg Roberts having closest to the pin and Ken Tolar sinking the longest putt. Apparently the M&M Bag was a bit too heavy, so a cart and Caddie were awarded, along with the bag, to Gregg Roberts. - Word has it you want to be very nice to Gregg this upcoming year. The other big winners were as follows:

Golfer of the year - Jim Terry

Broken Club Award – Greg Roberts

I Hate This Game Trophy – Bill Evans

I Love Sand Traps – Wayne Miller – Don Rolf

The Lowest Participation “Timothy standing in the corner” Randy Pishek The Best Dressed Golfer Award “The Master Suit” wasn’t available; Ken kept it in his closet as he would have won anyway!

Men’s Poker Bill Evans (253) 265-0049 Ray Kittelberger (253) 549 -2195 This new group will have a different host monthly and the night selected is the second Tuesday @ 6:00PM at the host’s home, where a light dinner, soft drinks and beer will be served. The Group is open to new members. We currently have seven original members and five subs. We strive to have seven members for a card game and several subs. Two groups would have fourteen members and probably six subs. If you are interested members contact Bill Evans 253-265-0049 or Ray Kittelberger 253-549-2195.

Needle Arts Sharon Panchot (253) 858-2091 Needle Arts meets on the first Thursday of the month at 10:30 am at members' homes. Our individual projects include knitting, crocheting, and embroidery, counted cross stitch/needlepoint, quilting, or sometimes just doing some hand sewing - whatever we enjoy. We stay through lunch and always enjoy some good conversation. The next meeting will be at Dottie Pringle's home on Thursday, November 2nd, and on Thursday, December 7th, Lavern Mikesell will host our group. An e-mail reminder will be sent to group members a few days before each meeting, please be sure to RSVP to the hostess so she'll know you're planning to come.

Sailing Activity Group Bob Himes (253) 509-0113

The Sailing Group schedules at least two outings per month (depending on wind, weather, tides, and crew availability) for 4 – 6 hour day sails out of the Harbor aboard a Catalina 310 sailboat from May through September. While there is ample opportunity for members to get some time at the helm and trim sails, no prior sailing experience is required, just an appreciation of being out on the water in a fresh breeze with good company. Please contact Bob Himes (253-509-0113) to find out more about this group and express interest in joining our nautical adventures for the 2018 sailing season starting in May.
