May’s President's Message:

Busy times for so many. I was lucky enough to welcome a new grandson, Maxwell Douglas, so my attention has been distracted, but PAL has a lot of plans in the works that will keeps us busy this Summer into the Fall. I hope everyone in our little PAL vil-lage can find the perfect part to play. I think our past officers and chair people enjoyed the Appreciation Luncheon at the Green House last month. This is a small treat for all those who have contributed so much. Your efforts and talent are an inspiration to me. Thank you!

Enjoy all the beauty around us!

President.

Movie Review by Myrna Binion…..

We all love movie reviews – so I am doing a review of one of the excellent DVD’s in our PAL VHS and DVD col-

lection which is stored at the Kimball Gallery/Coffee Shop for your enjoyment, entertainment and enlighten-

ment! All you have to do is go in and check out the set that tickles your fancy in the art medium of your

choice. It’s free!

I found a DVD this month which I found particularly interesting and wanted to share with you – it is #12,

“Color Harmony for Luminous Pastels” with Colleen Howe. Luminous – what a wonderful art term! What a

thing for a pastelist to aspire to and, possibly, to achieve! As you know, you just can’t ‘Mix Paint” to get a col-

or you like in pastels – you have to sneak up on it and trick the eye. You layer and use tricks to get luminous

color – and this DVD will show you how to do that.

I think this DVD would be excellent for a beginner as well as an advanced pastel painter. There is plenty of in-

formation regarding pastel products and pastel types as well as techniques of using under-painting and layer-

ing pastel.

Colleen gives a lesson in composition and in using value and color studies to map out her final painting which

is very useful. There is discussion of focal points and leading line – always good to practice and remember!

Her shapes and intervals are interesting and her style of building the painting to completion is well described.

There is plenty of discussion of soft and hard edges and color harmony – it just made me want to paint! I

hope you will enjoy this presentation as much as I did and that you appreciate the work of a fine pastel paint-

er – you can look her up at colleenhowe.com for more!

Contact Jean Grover at [email protected] with suggestions of videos/DVDs you might like to see added

to our collection. Tell her how much you appreciate her efforts to compile, organize and keep sorted all the

items in our cabinet!

That’s all Folks! Myrna

PAL Board Meeting April 23, 2015

President Kate Griswold called the meeting to order at 10:00.

Attendees: Cathie Johnson, Myrna Binion, Judy Buskirk, Daren Wilsey, Anne Knapp, Robert Knapp, Carlene Salazar, Greg

Trathen, Ceci Anderson, Charli Meachem, Sandy Newhouse, Kim Gunns, Stephanie Cardinal, Charles Salak

Treasurer’s Report: Bob presented the monthly reconciliation report. It was suggested that at the June board meeting he present

a time line of the treasury over the past 5 years to get a better idea of where we are going.

Summer Art Festival: Kate reported for Hillaire that they are working on the merchandise for the festival which will include shirts

and caps. The poster winners will be at the April general meeting.

Scholarship presentations from students have been received.

Member Show: Cathie and Greg reported Mallard’s Landing will sponsor the reception including food, flowers and copy of electron-ic flyer to its residents. Nancy Bartlett has agreed to be the wine server. Mallard’s Landing would like PAL to include its name as a sponsor in all advertising. They would also like to have a mural painted which would be peaceful yet colorful on one wall in their building.

Open Show: Sandy reported the History Museum would like us to pay for the cost of the giant banner used to advertise the show. Would also like to know who pays for the invitations to the reception. The reception is not open to the general public but is open to PAL and History Museum members. Charles will design the invitations. There is no word yet if we can have the museum next year since it is being reviewed under new management. Myrna will talk to the new manager about Thursday night out in Oct. Could museum open charge and sell wine? Could PAL membership get a discount that night?

The Open Show committee needs help with social media and with distribution of posters in area, particularly uptown. Sherry

Pierce should be invited to board meetings as consultant with social media.

Kim presented a recommendation to the Board to re-examine the purpose of the show, the value as a moneymaker, possibly bi-annually, problem of venue, problem of securing future juror. A discussion followed.

Gig Harbor Art Center Alliance: Anne the actual building is 5-7 years in the future. John Ross from the museum wants to revamp the interior of the museum to make it more available for events with the front area for ongoing free shows changed once a month with greater variety and tied to Gig Harbor history. The first offering will be the decorated paddles with a wine reception May 7 and family day May 16. Anne would like our artists to attend and talk about the oars. There is another net shed show slated for Novem-ber.

Workshops: JoAnn sent word that the Dawn Emerson workshop in Sept has only 4 students to date. Dawn needs more money

than we normally pay due to the extra day needed for her multi-media workshop.

Demos: Judy reported she has a tentative schedule laid out for the rest of this year and next. She talked to Robin Peterson doing

major landscapes in Oct and Sherry Pierce about a social media demo in Nov. Bob offered to do a demo using the pc.

Posters: Stevie needs to get the posters back to the students. The winners will be at the general meeting next week.

General: 1. An audit is required during the first quarter of each year. When will this be done? 2. We need a new slate of offic-ers. The voting should be done at the Sept meeting. A discussion of the slate committee followed. 3. Bob will put information and needs on the screen during our general meeting social hour and break time.

Meeting adjourned 11:55

Nancy Bartlett, Secretary

More about PAL Volunteers……by Myrna Binion

Do you know about the PAL Scholarships for our members? PAL Members (after one year’s mem-bership) are eligible for scholarships up to the amount of $250.00 every other year. This amount of money goes a long way toward paying for a workshop or for supplies for that workshop. To get all the information, please look on the Peninsula Art League web page under miscellaneous forms. If you still have questions, call or email Sherrie Bonsell, our Scholarship Committee Chairperson.

One of the questions asked on the form is relating to how much volunteer time and effort you have given to support PAL projects. Have you worked on shows? Helped to hang art? Worked on a com-mittee or as a PAL Board Member? Have you assisted at the Art Festival? Do you bring treats to PAL Meetings? What have you done? What can you do to help the group? There is no “them” in PAL, there is only “us” – our members do it all. Please take the time to share in the fun – find a pro-ject that will fit into your life, family and work schedule – just do what you can to help out. At the same time you are doing that, you will be meeting new friends and doing your part to make PAL a great organization!
