Ilove testimonials and
have been fortunate to
hear some great stuff
this past week with
egards to how exercise isaffecting lives in eye opening
and positive ways. Some-
imes we’ve got to hurt in
order to realize what’s best
for our bodies.
If you read last week’s arti-
cle “Home Spun Research,”
there was a part of it that
talked about knee soreness.
If all the muscles connected
to your knee are properly conditioned and strength-
ened they will keep that
knee joint open and properly
aligned, which results in less
wear and tear on the joint and less pain (no matter how torn down they are). It spurred a number of discus-sions with members andfriends agreeing and realiz-ing the truth of this. In fact, one of the testimonialsexplained that when he trav-els and is away from struc-tured weight lifting for lon-ger than a couple of weeks,he notices that his kneesbecome painful. He knowsthat strengthening is post-poning knee surgery andreduces the aches and pains.
Another friend of minetold me that her knees werecontinuously achy, until shebecame regular with her legstrengthening program. She walks regularly, hikes oftenand sometimes cycles; which you’d think wouldkeep her knees strong? Withthe constant pounding of thegravitational impact on theknees, it wasn’t until shecountered that consistent impact with increasedstrengthening of all the legmuscles that she found lesssoreness in the knee after her exercise and outdoor
activities. “I keep regular onmy leg strengthening, sothat I can do what I love withless pain.”
It’s not only about theknees, every joint in our body responds the same way to strengthening. One of my good friends, whose busi-ness is experiencing theincreased flux of summer residents, told me during my appointment with her. “I cantell that I haven’t been in to workout lately.” Her busi-
ness requires her to do a lot of forward bending over. With the increased summer workload, she has found her-self in a lot of pain withincreased soreness in her upper back, shoulders andneck. Her strength trainingprogram includes a littleextra upper back and rhom-
boid strengthening, just for her occupation. Now she issuffering and hurting. Shetold me that she is rethink-ing her summer scheduleand will be in soon to get back to lifting.
Regular strengtheningalso affects and maintains

I raninto the convenience store tograb what I needed and oneof our members told me,“since I’ve come back andhave been consistent withmy exercise, I am now com-pletely of f my high bloodpressure medication.” Shehad been on blood pressuremedication since the birth of
her teenage son. Yes, I know that exercise has done thisto hundreds of our mem-bers, but to hear it on a Sun-day morning with the excite-ment and satisfaction in her voice, completely made my day. And to add to this testi-mony, she not only has madea huge impact on her own
life, she has been exercising with her daughter this entiretime. She’s now set a healthy example for her daughter, both experiencing and reap-ing the benefits of how exer-cise can affect our lives.
