For the Trail-Gazette T he Internal Revenue Service identified 2015 “Dirty Dozen” list of tax scams with a warning to taxpayers about phone scams continu- ing coast-to-coast during the early weeks of this year’s filing season. The aggressive, threaten- ing phone calls from scam artists continue to be seen on a daily basis in states across the nation. The IRS urged taxpayers not give out money or personal financial information as a result of these phone calls or from emails claiming to be from the IRS. Phone scams and email phishing are among the “Dirty Dozen” tax scams the IRS highlighted, for the first time, on 12 straight business days from Jan. 22 to Feb. 6. The IRS has also set up a special section on IRS.gov highlighting these 12 schemes for taxpayers. Illegal scams can lead to significant penalties and interest for taxpayers, as well as possible criminal prosecution. IRS Criminal Investigation works closely with the Department of Jus- tice (DOJ) to shutdown scams and prosecute the criminals behind them. Tax- payers should remember that they are legally respon- sible for what is on their tax returns even if it is prepared by someone else. A recap of this year’s “Dirty Dozen” scams include: Phone Scams: Aggres- sive and threatening phone calls by criminals imperson- ating IRS agents remains an ongoing threat to taxpayers. The IRS has seen a surge of these phone scams in recent months as scam artists threaten police arrest, deportation, license revoca- tion and other things. scams from page 9

•Phishing: Taxpayersneed to be on guard againstfake emails or websiteslooking to steal personalinformation. The IRS willnot send you an email abouta bill or refund out of theblue.• Identity Theft: Taxpay-

ers need to watch out foridentity theft especiallyaround tax time. The IRScontinues to pursue thecriminals that file fraudulentreturns using someoneelse’s SSN.• Return Preparer Fraud:

Taxpayers need to be on thelookout for unscrupulousreturn preparers. There aresome dishonest preparerswho set up shop each filingseason to perpetrate refundfraud, identity theft and oth-er scams that hurt taxpay-ers.• Offshore Tax Avoid-

ance: The recent string ofsuccessful enforcement

actions against offshore taxcheats and the financialorganizations that help themshows that it’s a bad bet tohide money and income off-shore.• Inflated Refund Claims:

Taxpayers need to be on thelookout for anyone promis-ing inflated refunds. Bewary of anyone who asksthem to sign a blank return, promise a big refund beforelooking at their records, orcharge fees based on a per-centage of the refund. Scamartists use flyers, advertise-ments, phony store frontsand word of mouth via com-munity groups and church-es in seeking victims.• Fake Charities: Be on

guard against groups mas-querading as charitableorganizations to attractdonations from unsuspect-ing contributors. Contribu-tors should take a few extra

minutes to ensure theirhard-earned money goes tolegitimate and currently eli-gible charities. IRS.gov hasthe tools taxpayers need tocheck out the status of char-itable organizations. Bewary of charities withnames that are similar tofamiliar or nationally knownorganizations.• Hiding Income with

Fake Documents:Hidingtaxable income by filingfalse Form 1099s or otherfake documents is a scam.Taxpayers are legallyresponsible for what is ontheir returns regardless ofwho prepares the returns.• Abusive Tax Shelters:

Taxpayers should avoidusing abusive tax structuresto avoid paying taxes. TheIRS is committed to stop-ping complex tax avoidanceschemes and the peoplewho create and sell them. The vast majority of taxpay-

ers pay their fair share, andeveryone should be on thelookout for people peddlingtax shelters that sound toogood to be true. When indoubt, taxpayers shouldseek an independent opin-ion regarding complex prod-ucts they are offered.• Falsifying Income to

Claim Credits: Taxpayersshould avoid inventingincome to erroneously claimtax credits. Taxpayers aresometimes talked into doingthis by scam artists. Taxpay-ers are best served by filingthe most-accurate returnpossible because they arelegally responsible for whatis on their return.• Excessive Claims for

Fuel Tax Credits: Taxpayersneed to avoid improperclaims for fuel tax credits. The fuel tax credit is gener-ally limited to off-highwaybusiness use, including use

in farming. Consequently, the credit is not available tomost taxpayers. But yet, theIRS routinely finds unscru-pulous preparers who haveenticed sizable groups oftaxpayers to erroneouslyclaim the credit to inflatetheir refunds.• Frivolous Tax Argu-

ments: Taxpayers shouldavoid using frivolous taxarguments to avoid payingtheir taxes. Promoters offrivolous schemes encour-age taxpayers to makeunreasonable and outland-ish claims to avoid payingthe taxes they owe. Thesearguments are wrong andhave been thrown out ofcourt. While taxpayers havethe right to contest their taxliabilities in court, no onehas the right to disobey thelaw or disregard theirresponsibility to pay taxes. The penalty for filing a frivo-lous tax return is $5,000.

So today completesmy 50th rotationaround the sun. It’sa big birthday!

With mixed emotions I’mhappily embracing manywonderful aspects of cele-brating another birthday andmore than anything elseembracing the many bless-ings that I have in my life.I’ve always been a person

to make birthdays a specialday, because it honestly is theonly day of the year that youcan call your own. This worldrotates so fast and our livesbecome so busy with respon-sibilities that more often thannot, every other day of theyear belongs to other things. So this week’s article will bea little journey of how Ibelieve health and fitness

gives us opportunities to cele-brate every birthday to itsfullest.Fifty years ago my parents

gave birth to a baby girlunder unexpected circum-stances in a world that wasmuch different than it istoday, this being my firstblessing. I’ve been fortunateto be given a life filled withlove, support and a greatgenetic profile from whichmy continued good healthhas been rooted.Unfortunately we can’t

choose our parents nor thegenetics that we’ve beenborn with. We can choosewhat we do with them andhow we care for ourselves. No matter if you’ve been giv-en the worst of the worst orthe best of the best, it’s reallyup to you to take care of your-self every day.Back when I was in ele-

mentary school, I was achubby all American kid. Infact, my entire family was. Then a long awaited trip to goskiing in Colorado was in theworks (keep in mind I was aFlorida girl). My mom insist-ed that she wasn’t going tospend all that money and notbe able to ski all day. Shestarted jogging, dad startedjogging, middle school cameand I started swimming, mysister danced, my brother insports and the chubby familygot fit.Having been directed into

sports during middle andhigh school was a time in mylife that I thank god for everyday. Life lessons don’t comeany stronger or healthierthan what you learn whenyou are part of an athletic or

academic team. Wins, losses, success, failures, friends, ene-mies, loves, losses, responsi-bility, time management, goalsetting, sleeping, playing, eat-ing, laughing, crying andeverything else that youlearn during those importantformative years of your life. IfI could wish one thing onevery young parent in today’sworld is to get your kidsinvolved with sports andwatch them grow in waysthat you are unable to teachthem,.At the University of Florida

I studied Exercise ‘CorporateFitness’ Science, which wasthe new direction in exerciseat the time. It was during thattime I was introduced to howimportant strength training isin every day, every ‘body’ andat every age. The researchand the education that Ilearned molded my strongopinion on how important itis that every person includeregular exercise into theirlives.Every day I’m inspired by

so many members who rep-resent this. Just a few daysago I was changing in thelocker room with a long timefriend who I thought wasonly a few years older thanme and she told me she was12 years older! After I pulledmy jaw off the floor I smiledat her and said to myself, that’s what exercise does! And then I have my Frankwho started Tri-Fit class atthe Senior Center over 12years ago. He credits thisclass to saving his life andallowing him to remain asindependent and active as heis in his 90’s. He along withso many members andfriends are true inspirationsto me as this world continuesto spin so fast.Becoming a mom has been

Ican still see and hearPops leaning out thewindow and talking toJimmy, or Bobby, or

any of his other dogs andsaying something like, “Bygolly I think there are somecows (or sheep) back there.I think you’d better go get‘em.” Generally it took placeon Meadow Creek, afterPops had quit riding anddidn’t walk far anymore. Buthe always had good stockdogs.

Which ever dog it waswould jump from the back of

his pickup and run down toand across Meadow Creek, then up the side of the hill, about a mile away. I canattest to the distancebecause the road Pops wason was next to a fence on asection line. The next fence, also on a section line, was acouple hundred yardsbehind the hill the dogs

were on. When they got tothe top of the hill, Popswould whistle and they’dstop. He would be standingalongside the pickup andhe’d wave them to the rightor to the left and they’d dis-appear from sight.

After a period of time, usu-ally not more than five min-utes or so, livestock wouldcome churning in sight, thedog behind them. If therewere no cattle or sheep, thedog would show up, on topof the hill. They’d watch andPops would signal go themto go to the other way. Weknew if his dogs hadchecked out the area, therewas nothing there for us tofind, so we didn’t have toride there.

I’ve often said that a goodcow dog is worth two cow-boys, and I still think that’sthe case when you’re work-ing livestock, just don’t usethem with buffalo.

Boo was the best dog Iever had. She was amazingand teaching her was easy. She knew more about work-ing cattle and sheep whenshe was a year old than Icould possibly have taughther. My dad always said thatgood ones just have it inthem. They know what to do,you just have to learn how totell them what you want, andthen teach them to stopwhen the job was done.

Boo started to work withme when she was sixmonths old. I was night

lambing about 1200 head ofsheep. I found a lamb in themiddle of the shed, no momin sight. I pushed the bunchto one end of the shed to getthem to run by me one ortwo at a time, trying to findone with some blood on herrear end. Boo stood by meas i tried several times tofind the lost mother. Aboutthe fifth time, as I startedtoward the drop band(eweswho hadn’t lambed), to havethem go by again, Boomoved away from me andwith no signal of any sortfrom me, worked them sothey came by the two of ustwo or three at a time. Goodworking dogs are great.
