denly handed over a checkfor one million dollars?Eight random people findthemselves in this life-alter-ing situation, with conse-quences that span fromhilarious to tragic to inspir-ing. This is the plot joiningtogether a sequence of sto-ries from the 1932 classicfilm, “If I Had a Million”,the final installment of the“Money at the Movies”series this month at theEstes Valley Library. The film will be shown

on the big screen in theHondius Community Roomthis Tuesday, March 24 at3 p.m. Introducing the film, financial consultant Mar-sha Yelick will offer attend-ees insights into the finan-cial themes they mightwatch for during the event. In “If I Had a Million”,

the framing device involvesa dying millionaire (playedby Richard Bennett) wholeaves his fortune tonumerous complete strang-ers, with names chosenrandomly from the tele-phone directory. The vari-ous segments concernwhat these “lucky souls”decide to do with theirlandfall and how their livesare changed. W.C. Fieldsplays a motorist who isdetermined to get hisrevenge against the roadhogs that ruin his leisurely

driving. In another seg-ment, a timid clerk in a chi-na shop leaves behind hisjob, with some dramaticresults. “Three Marines” isa segment starring GaryCooper as one in a trio ofservicemen who, disbeliev-ing the check in theirhands, carelessly sign overtheir dough to the cook at alunch stand.Along the way, these

unexpected windfalls bringjoy—or tragedy—to therecipients, until the moviereunites with its eccentricmillionaire at the end.“If I Had a Million” is a

Some students wereusing this technology forthe first time, while othershad experience working on

photography, film andmusic projects from home.

One element that madethe creations possible wasthe new “Green Screen”recently acquired by theLibrary. That screen is 12by 18 feet in size, largeenough to allow thosebeing filmed to stand onthe screen, allowing head-to-toe “transport” of their

persons and charactersinto creative and imagina-tive settings.

Where does“luck” fall intothe equation ofhealth and

wellness? With St. Patrick’sDay having just passed, itgot me thinking about howluck plays into health andfitness. We all know individu-als who seem to be lucky allthe time. I’m sure there’ssomeone in your life, theyare simply lucky at life. Amember was telling me theother day, how he lives onthe opposite side of the“body weight” issue. He canhardly eat enough in orderto keep weight on him.Right? How lucky is that? Hecan eat anything and every-thing he wants and not puton an ounce of weight. Sohow does this work? Is thereluck? Is it about education? Is it about money? Is it downhard grit? Here’s an interesting fact,

higher levels of health aredirectly correlated to higherlevels of education. It’s alsotrue that higher levels ofhealth are also correlated tohigher levels of income. Isuppose if you think aboutthese statistics, there issome truth here. Most individuals, who

have higher levels of educa-tion understand and acceptthe ins and outs of preventa-tive health care and are oftenmore aware of medical prob-lems when they occur. These individuals are alsomore apt to practice betterhealth habits. It’s the same with individu-

als who have higher levels ofincome. These individualsalso utilize preventativehealth screenings more reg-ularly and because they arefinancially more secure itallows them to be able toshop a little wiser and

healthier in all aspects oftheir lives. What about down hard

grit? Truth be known, whenit comes to our healththere’s very little luckinvolved, it really takes day-in and day-out awarenessand focus. I’m calling it downhard grit! It takes hard workand consistent attention inorder to keep ahead of thehealth and aging curve.Practicing a healthy lifestyletakes a lot of planning, dedi-cation, determination, knowl-edge, some uncomfortablemoments, organization, acceptance and practice. Butwhen the grit is put to thegrind, the results end in alifestyle that far exceedswhat any luck could bringus. So what about luck? Is

there anything lucky in thiscrazy realm of health andfitness? I’d have to say yes.Genetically, we can be luckyor not. “If we could haveonly picked our parents”have you ever had thisthought cross your mind?Unfortunately it’s too latenow. Genetically we have

very little choice and yes, there are some medicalthings as well as body typesthat are passed to usthrough our genes. Thankyou very much, or not? We’re pretty lucky to be

living in this generation ofmedical advancements andknowledge. Just think abouta few generations ago andwhat their medical opportu-nities where? We’ve come along way in understandingpreventative health care, with finding cures and withunderstanding medicine alltogether. Medical advance-ments have provided us withlonger life spans and theopportunities to live “healthi-er” within these life spans. No matter how you look at it,we’re pretty lucky to havethese opportunities.Like all circles of life, the

industry of exercise andhealth has come backaround to a simpler under-standing and for this I feellucky. Living healthy is notabout many hours in thegym, or only eating carrotsand broccoli, or about notenjoying the fun things inlife. It’s about finding thatbalance in your life so thatyou can exercise the amountthat you need to in order tobe healthy. It’s about allow-ing you to work at an occu-pation in order to afford alife that is healthier and hap-pier. A life where you areable to study and educateyourself and enjoy thingsthat are important to you.So as luck would have it or

maybe not, your health andwellness takes a lot morethan luck, it takes hardwork. Hard work pays off inthe long run and hopefullythen we can all become a lit-tle “luckier in the goodthinks in life” too!

Well, Skeeterbug, who now wantsto be calledStephan, Cathe-

rine and I, drove to the WildAnimal Sanctuary just outsideof Keenesburg, Co. last week-end.

I had a show to do there onSaturday evening, so it wasbusiness mixed with plea-sure. I really don’t like sayingit in that manner, as I’m oneof the lucky ones whose busi-ness is actually a pleasure. If Icould make a living in anymanner, I’m pretty sure whatI’m doing is what I wouldchoose to do.

Anyway, we had to bethere, and we’d heard aboutthe Wild Animal Sanctuary,so Catherine and I thought itwould be a great thing forStephan to see. Well, hisMom and about to be Dadbeat us to the punch. Thethree of them had alreadybeen there. That gave us aready made six-year-old tourguide.

We spent quite a while nearthe entrance watching sometigers get acquainted. Therewere two in particular thatdidn’t know if they would beable to get along. I didn’t sayanything to Skee—Stephan, when I noticed the two facingoff. I didn’t have to. The onefacing away roared, Stephan’shead came up and he lookedtoward the noise. He asked ifthe roar came through loud-speakers. Those cats don’tneed sound support. Wecould feel their roar throughthe walkway we were on, thir-ty feet above them.

I was interested in the griz-zly bears. I’ve seen them inthe wild and been too close tothem a time or two. Since Istarted writing about them in

my thriller, “Ghost BearIsland,” they have been afavorite. The second book ofthe trilogy is on it’s way tocompletion and book three iscoming along as well.

There were two that wres-tled and rolled and climbedover one another, almost as ifthey were clowning around, just for us. Great fun to watch.

Of course we had to stopfor something to snack on.Stephan got what we used tocall a popsicle. And it wascold. He started to lick it andhis lip got stuck, like ourtongues did when we lickedcold metal as kids. He pulledhis lip out far enough that wecould pour water on it and hislip finally came loose. Theonly trouble we had was gig-gling while we tried to gethim free.

It’s quite the place. Fasci-nating, wonderful, and yet, after reading about the thingsthese animals have had toendure before being rescued, there is also sadness andshame. It makes you wonderjust how stupid, how meanand how unfeeling, some socalled humans can be.

We all need a sanctuary ofsome sort. Mine is my musicand writing.

It’s awfully nice that theseanimals have their sanctuaryas well. The workers are vol-unteers and your ticket pricehelps pay for the feed andcare. If you get a chance, takea drive down there and have alook at it. It’s worth your time.
