Shalom! I am honored and

humbled to be your new Synagogue President. Hav-ing been an active and long standing Emanuel member, I have had the pleasure of getting to know many of you and look forward to meeting those of you who I don’t yet know. I have been so fortunate to follow and learn from Gail Wein-stein, who is an amazing role model and a wonderful example of a strong, dedicated, and smart leader. I plan to build on the many significant devel-opments that Gail and other recent lay leaders spearheaded to make The Emanuel evermore vibrant for the 21st century. I look forward to leading our congregation in continuing to build an engaging community of dynamic learning and spirituality. Our efforts should be on offering our members many opportunities to find meaning, purpose, joy, and blessing in Syna-gogue life. Recognizing that each of us is unique and that one size does not fit all, we will endeavor to provide a variety of entry points and ways you

can connect with our special commu-nity of prayer, learning, caring, and action. We will also strive to provide you with an array of opportunities to develop meaningful relationships with fellow members, our clergy, and staff. Although summer is often a slower, quieter time, you will find the Emanuel to be buzzing with life. In addition to daily prayer services, make your summer even more enjoyable by participating in our new and innova-tive Sacred Summer Adult Education Series, our fun Ice Cream Social, ter-rific community tag sale and so much more. I also encourage you to bring your friends and family so that they too can experience our sacred com-munity and become valued members of The Emanuel Synagogue. Best wishes for a sacred summer!

The title of this year’s

convention was “L`eila: Raising Cantors Higher,” and the organizers did a superb job of living up to this theme. Recognizing the fact that our profession is changing in many ways, they offered six different series of in-tensive sessions, each one focusing on an area in which we professionals can develop our skills in order to keep up with the changing needs of our con-gregations.

The intensive areas were:• Chaplaincy• Homiletics• Social media & technology• Programming for the 21st century shul• Songleader boot camp• Mindful spiritual leadership

If the convention could have last-ed for four weeks instead of four days, I could have easily benefitted from intensive sessions in all six areas, but I chose from two different areas that interested me the most. In the area of “Programming for the 21st century shul” I learned about “StorahTelling,” a branded method of expounding on a Torah portion that we have tried here on occasion, that brings the lessons of a parasha to life for children, teens, and adults. I also attended a session on creative t’fila experiences for teens presented by a former student of mine from Winni-peg, Amy Dorsch, the Education and Outreach Coordinator for the na-tional USY office who happens to be married to the brother of our former student rabbi, Josh Dorsch. [I had the added nakhes of her publicly declaring that she entered the field of Jewish education and service thanks to her experience of tutoring Bar/Bat Mitz-vah students under my direction.]

The material she provided included a variety of ideas and resources to make t’filot more meaningful to teens. I would like to work with our USY ad-visor to see what might work for our youth. I also attended two sessions of “Songleader boot camp” conducted by the well-known Jewish rock singer and composer Rick Recht. He is ex-tremely effective in coaching song leaders, clergy, and anyone who gets in front of people in how to present oneself and how to engage others in song, prayer, and learning. I learned a lot from him and have already begun to employ some of his methods in our Shabbat services. This year’s historic convention saw the installation of our first female president, Hazzan Nancy Abramson of New York City. Women were first admitted to the Assembly in 1990 and have increasingly taken on more leadership roles since then. Cantor Abramson has the unique distinction of simultaneously serving as Director of the H.L. Miller Cantorial School of the Jewish Theological Seminary. This gives both institutions a key

connection to serve our profession, and our congregations, the best way possible. One of the high points of the convention was the final concert, totally produced and performed by our female cantors. If I had to sum up in one word what I always get from CA conven-tions, and why it is so important for me to attend, it is INSPIRATION. I am inspired hearing my colleagues sing in concerts and lead t’filot, re-minding me of techniques that I can incorporate into my own davening. I am inspired by re-connecting with colleagues that I’ve known for years as we catch up on each other’s lives and careers. I am inspired by meet-ing new, younger colleagues, hearing their fresh approaches to nusah and programming while serving as mentor to them when called upon. I am in-spired that, in spite of ever-increasing demands on hazzanim to re-invent ourselves and to learn new skills that can be of service to our congrega-tions, our profession is still thriving, and hazzanim continue to lead our congregations in meaningful prayer, music and learning.

SCHOOL NEWSby Judith T. Fox, Director of Education

Our school has won several awards from the Commission on Jewish

Education and Leadership this spring. Congratulations to Robert Lipiner, Matthew Rosenthal, and Marissa Ward who won awards as Uniquely Effective Teacher Aides. Congratula-tions to Grae Sibelman and our entire faculty for the Pesach family program, Pesach Around the World, which won the Innovative Family Education Program Award. The committee “was impressed with the creativity, prac-ticality, and hands on nature of this program and was pleased to see that students participated in the research for this program and helped with the presentations.” Summer in the school wing is a time of planning and anticipation of wonderful things for the coming school year. During August you will receive your children’s class assign-ments and event schedules for the coming year. You will also be receiv-ing information about Rosh Hasha-nah and Yom Kippur. School opens on Sunday, September 8, 2013. We have Shabbat services every Friday evening and Shabbat morning during the summer. We love seeing our school families in synagogue. Our school office will be open during the summer and we welcome parents and children who would like to stop in and visit.

ACTION / Tikkun OlamCommunity of

B’YADEYNU COMMITTEE NEWS

by Risa Davidson

Chesed and B’Yadeynu have joined forces to launch an online service: Emanuel Synagogue’s Lotsa Help-

ing Hands. We bring together caregivers and volunteers through online communities. People in need and their caregivers benefit from the gift of our loving support while volunteers find meaning in giving back to those in need. Chesed is Emanuel’s Caring Committee that springs to action when someone in our own community is facing a family difficulty or crisis. We answer the call. B’Yadeynu is Emanuel’s social action committee. We organize projects and fund raisers to help the hungry, send packages to soldiers overseas, respond to a crisis or disaster situation at home or anywhere around the world. It takes less than 5 minutes to join our Emanuel Lotsa team. Thank you to the over 50 individuals who have al-ready joined our helping team. For those of you who have not yet signed up we urge you to do so. It’s easy. We can help you. There are many volunteer opportunities to choose from. All kinds of skills are needed: cooking, visiting, giv-ing a ride, sorting food at a food pantry, delivering soup, and making packages to send to servicemen and women. You may sign up to help one time or regularly. You may find you enjoyed helping and want to help more! Give it a try! Your support will be greatly appreciated and you’re sure to bring a smile to someone’s face. Can you make a commitment to answer the call for help and volunteer ONE TIME during the calendar year?

HELP IS HEREHelp is our middle name — whether you need help or you want to provide help.

You may be caring for an ill loved one, an aging parent, a child with special needs or a veteran. You may want to volunteer to help a friend or others in your neighborhood.

However you define help —Emanuel Synagogue’s Lotsa Helping Hands is your home.

It will make such a difference in our community. Look for the link on Emanuel’s website: www.lotsahelpinghands.com/c/662862/ For more information or for help signing up, you may contact Linda Asmar (860-206-1737, lindaasmarLR2@ gmail.com), Risa Davidson (860-236-8889, risagdavidson@ gmail.com), or Francene Weingast (860-523-7778, [email protected]). Please join other Emanuel synagogue members in lead-ing Friday evening Shabbat services and sharing Shabbat joy with residents at the Hebrew Home. Services are held on the third Friday of the month and are from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. We start gathering and escorting residents from their rooms to the chapel at 2:40. For more information, please contact Pam Garry at 523-5254. Your participation, chil-dren and adults, regardless of your knowledge of Hebrew or the service, will help to make it a warm-hearted and spirited service for everyone. Please contact one of our co-chairs, Risa Davidson, (860-236-8889) or Janet Wallans, [email protected] (860-278-4596) if you are interested in learning more about B’Yadeynu activities.

From the Rabbi, continued

amount of effort into this labor of love. Thank you to all our contribu-tors and supporters of the Emanuel. Kol hakavod — a heartfelt salute our many community partners who are here tonight, clergy, educators, professional leaders, and staff and lay leaders of the many congregations, schools agencies, and nonprofit or-ganizations who devote themselves to the needs of our community, Connecticut, Israel, and the wider world. Thank you for your mutual support and friendship. To all the aforementioned leaders and commu-nity servants, it is a privilege to serve with you. There are not enough words to do justice to Rabbi Philip Lazowski. This wonderful man is a mentor, teacher, counselor, role model, and friend all rolled into one. You are a passionate Jewish leader — an authentic human being who cares so much about people. I am proud to call you Rabbi. Debbie and I and our family thank you and Ruth for your kindness and guidance. Thank you to my mother and my father of blessed memory, for all your love, teaching, and support over the years. And, to Debbie’s parents for your goodness and for being there for us in every way. To our brothers and their spouses: Michael and Sheila, Dave and Aliza, and Dan and children — we are so happy and grateful to share life’s journey with you. To our children, Gabrielle, Sha-rone, and Ilan, you are an endless source of nachas and joy — Ima and I are so proud of you. To Debbie, my strong, courageous, loving, and sup-portive wife: You avoid the spotlight, but to me you are a shining star. What a blessing that we began this adven-ture 25 years ago on this very bima. May the Holy One bless this congregation and all those here as-sembled; may we go from strength to strength together, in leadership and community, and transform ourselves, our community, and the world. Amen.

— David J. Small

Yizkor: Making the Connection

Yizkor is a request, directed to the Holy One, to remember our loved ones. In the act of asking G-d to remember, we ourselves perform a powerful act of

loving memory. Why ask the One who remembers everything to remember? Does G-d need a reminder? Why not simply say, “I remember”? By using this form, we emphasize that the act of loving memory is on behalf of our beloved. While it gives us comfort, we say their names and ask G-d to remember them for their benefit and for their honor.

Yizkor is our way of staying connected with our departed. Jewish culture values improvisation and constant invention; we also find great meaning performing the same action — with love and purpose — again and again. Yizkor is one of these important repeated actions. Our loved ones’ names are on our lips — Yom Tov after Yom Tov, year after year — as long as we have the breath within us to utter their names. When we keep faith with them in this way, we accord our dead an earthly immortality. They live on in our actions as well as in our hearts and minds.

One important way to honor the memory of our loved ones is to give a contribution in their memory. This gift is a true act of loving-kindness; we keep alive our loved one’s name through performance of this sacred and important task. This is what our Sages meant when they taught, Tzedakah tatzil mimavet, “Charitable giving saves from death.” Giving in memory of our dead saves them from oblivion by affirming their memory among the living through good deeds.

These generous acts to and for our dead elevate us and refine our hearts. When we honor and love the people who touched our lives, we honor and love the Creator of us all.

The Yizkor book is a time-honored Jewish practice. We hope that this book brings comfort to those who mourn and honor our departed, whom we remember with love.

— Rabbi David J. SmallTishri 5773

GEZA VERMES, PIONEER SCHOLAR OF THE DEAD SEA SCROLLS

Professor Geza Vermes, pioneer British scholar of the Dead Sea

Scrolls, died of cancer at 88 on May 8, 2013. Born Jewish but raised Catholic by his parents in an effort, not uncommon among Hungarian Jews, to escape anti-Semitism, Dr. Vermes eventually returned to Juda-ism in 1957. His accomplishments were numerous, including writing the first doctoral dissertation on the Dead Sea Scrolls and beginning in 1962, publishing a standard translation of the scrolls issued by Penguin Books, many times reissued in new and up-dated editions. Dr. Vermes’s efforts in fighting anti-Semitism in Catholic education were influential in the Sec-ond Vatican Council and his books on Jesus as a Jew made clear that Jesus was a “totally Jewish person with totally Jewish ideas, whose religion was totally Jewish and whose culture, whose aims, whose aspiration could be understood only in the framework of Judaism.” Dr. Vermes had the dis-tinction of being appointed the first professor Jewish Studies at Oxford University. He also had a sense of humor. Asked about the authentic-ity of Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ, he quipped “It’s quite obvious that none of the actors could speak Aramaic.” This brief account of Geza Vermes is completely dependent on a much fuller obituary printed in the Forward for May 24, 2013.

One of the things that Don Miller and I like to do on our group

tours to Israel is offering our trip participants the opportunity to not only see Israel, but to meet Israel. For one of the surprises on our trip last month, we had a few Lone Soldiers from the Israel Defense Force (IDF) join us for Shabbat Dinner as our guests. Lone Soldiers are young men and women not born in Israel who serve in the IDF before deciding to make Aliyah. Two of the Lone Soldiers who joined us are known to many of you. One was Ari Goldman, son of Elly and Jonathan Goldman. He has been a Lone Soldier for a bit over a year now. The other one was Evan Mackey, son of Gail and Steve Mack-ey. Gail happened to be one of our trip participants. Evan has just started his basic training. We had planned on having two additional Lone Soldiers join us, but ended up having seven more at our dinner tables. One of the Lone Soldiers walked up to my son Aaron prior to dinner and said, “I know you.” Sure enough, this Lone Soldier, Canadian Josh

Goldberg, was a counselor at Camp Ramah New England in 2008 when Aaron was in the post Vocational Education Program. It gets even more interesting! Following dinner, our group took over the front lobby of our hotel for a Q&A with the soldiers. Seated to my right was Josh. To his right was another Lone Soldier. During a brief

lull in the Q&A Josh asked this fel-low where he was from. The soldier replied, “Canada.” These two went to elementary school together and had not seen each other in over 17 years! Needless to say, they had a joyous re-union and I think this is an example of “Jewish Geography” in action. Only in Israel! There will be more about Jeff & Don’s Israel Trip III in future issues of Everything Emanuel.

gogue Sisterhood Judaic Shop is better than ever. Over the last several months our store has undergone a major transforma-tion. New merchandise is easier to see thanks to Dan Emrick’s craftsmanship and the merchan-dising and display talents of Lisa Tesser, Fay deHaas and Debbie Bettan. A very special thank you to Gail Weinstein for helping to make this dream a reality.
