More than 50 people, aboutequally divided between adults andchildren, turned out to hear natu-ralist Nicole McGinnis, fromH A R D s Sulphur Creek NatureCenter, talk about our avian neigh-bors, the swallows that nest nearthe back gate and the egret rookeryflourishing at the park entrance.

Nicole did an outstanding job, showing a mud nest while explain-ing about the swallows and display-ing a stuffed Snowy Egret and pic-tures of the Great Egrets like ourneighbors, while explaining abouttheir nests in the trees. It appar-ently is unusual for a rookery tobe so far inland, so in that weare unique. These large whiteherons are nesting in eucalyp-tus trees, which are not as solid

as their preferred oak trees, soSulphur Creek regularly caresfor egret youngsters tipped outof the nest by swaying branch-es, and has a couple in resi-dence.

    The Critter A m b a s sa d o r s

traveling with the naturalist,M e r c u r y, an enormous gophersnake and Boris, a great hornedowl, were a big hit. Boris, cared forsince he lost a wing 18 years ago,was admired from a distancebecause of his sharp beak, but thesnake circled the room entwined onhis handlers arm, to varyingdegrees of interest and cringing.

Besides the birds, our neighbor-hood is shared by opossums, rac-coons and a variety of smallervarmints. The childrenwere encouraged towatch for wildlife. JS

    DUI Violator

One night a police officer was staking out aparticularly rowdy bar for possible DUI violations. At closing time, he saw a fellow tumble out of thebar, trip on the curb, and try his keys in fivedifferent cars before he found his. Then he sat in the frontseat fumbling around with his keys for several minutes.Everyone else left the bar and drove off. Finally he started hisengine and began to pull away. The police officer was waitingfor him. He stopped the driver, read him his rights and admin-istered the Breathalyzer test. The results showed a reading of0.0. The puzzled officer demanded to know how that could be.The driver replied, "Tonight I'm the designated decoy."

    Grocery Store

A young man waswalking through asupermarket to pickup a few things when

he noticed an old lady following himaround. Thinking nothing of it, heignored her and continued on. Finallyhe went to the checkout line, but shegot in front of him. "Pardon me," shesaid, "I'm sorry if my staring at youhas made you feel uncomfortable. It's just that you look just like myson, who just died recently." "I'mvery sorry," replied the young man,"is there anything I can do for you?""Yes," she said, "As I'm leaving, can

you say 'Good bye, Mother'? It wouldmake me feel so much better.""Sure," answered the young man.

As the old woman was leaving, hecalled out, "Goodbye, Mother!" As hestepped up to the checkout counter,

he saw that his total was $127.50."How can that be?" He asked, "I onlypurchased a few things!" "Yourmother said that you would pay forher," said the clerk.

    EVER WONDER

Why the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin?

Why women can't put on mascara with their mouth closed?

Why don't you ever see the headline "PsychicWins Lottery"?

Why is "abbreviated" such a long word?

Why is it that doctors call what they do "practice"?

Why is it that to stop Windows 98, you have to click on "Start"?

Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, and dishwashingliquid made with real lemons?

Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker?

Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?

Why isn't there mouse-flavored cat food?

When dog food is new and improved tasting, who tests it?

Why didn't Noah swat those two mosquitoes?

Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections?

You know that indestructible black box that is used on airplanes? Why don't they make the whole plane out of that stuff?

Why don't sheep shrink when it rains? Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

New CERT (Community Emergency ResponseTeam) Program begins September 16

(Sign up NOW!)The Hayward Fire Department is creating an interest list for the next

CERT Program which will consist of 4 consecutive evening indoor classesand one hands on drill (that will take placeoutdoors). The City hopes to recruit 60 resi-dents for this training for the month of September 2010.

The CERT program provides training to City of Hayward and FairviewFire Protection District residents. Participants learn skills that will enablethem to provide emergency assistance to their families and neighbors in the event of a major disaster. There will be no charge for the course. The only cost incurred may be in upgrading your disaster supplykit at home (food, water, tools etc.). Participants learn skills that will enable them to provide emergencyassistance to their families and immediate neighbors as well as organize a neighborhood team response.

The training will involve instructions in light fire suppression, hazardous materials situations, firstaid, light search and rescue techniques, and procedures in organizing CERTs to aid and assist in timesof disaster. You do not need any special skills to participate, just the willingness to learn the skills nec-essary to survive a disaster. You must be 18 years or older to sign up. The training program will involvesome physical activity, such as using fire extinguishing equipment and rescue tools under the supervi-sion of trained Fire Department personnel.

The Hayward Fire Department will make this a positive experience, emphasizing teamwork, coop-eration and community service in dealing with difficult emergency situations. The CERT program goalis to provide participants with the opportunity to learn more about how their efforts can help aid andprotect lives and property in times of disaster or other emergency crises.

    The dates for the next CERT program are as follows:Thursday, September 16th, 6pm-9pmWednesday, September 22, 6pm-9pmWednesday, September 29, 6pm-9pmThursday, October 7th, 6pm-9pmThursday, October 14th, 5:30-9pm

You must attend all classes in order to receive certification.

Residents who are potentially interested in this free training are encouraged to sign-up via the citysDisaster Preparedness website by clicking on the red Disaster Preparedness button below (or by past-ing the URL into your browser), then the green CERT button.
