    Missing NOVEMBER issue?Our magazine was already more than a

    week late when we picked it up and

    discovered it'd been printed with filler

    pages instead of our editorial content.

    Since not all the equipment problems at

    the publishers had been resolved,we elected to go with an inserted

    summary instead of a reprint.

    The complete November issue can be

    accessed from our website:

    www.spanishranch1.org.

    Copies of the October minutes that wereapproved at the November meeting will be availableat the December meeting. Material not summarizedhas been reprinted in the this issue. We regret any

    Community

    Helping

    CommunityOn September 1, 2010 Spanish

    Ranch experienced a small fire on thewest side of Murcia Street along theflood control canal. As a result of thisincident, several sections of the perim-eter fence were destroyed along withsome vegetation.

    The good news in all of this was thatno usable Spanish Ranch property wasdamaged and no personal propertysuffered damage.

    As management surveyed the af-fected area, it was decided to attemptto reclaim some of this area that hadbeen left fallow over the years with anaccumulation of debris.

    With the decision to reclaim this area

    we enrolled the assistance of the City of Hayward Day Labor Pro-gram. This program came to management's attention as a resultof Teresa's attendance of a City of Hayward Leadership Seminarearlier this spring.

    The Day Labor Program is a pilot program, about three yearsold, funded by private corporations, churches, civic organizationsas well as a grant from the Zellerbach Foundation. The aim of thiscommunity outreach program is to target the underemployed,that desire to work, but are unable to find suitable full time em-ployment.

    Two gentlemen, Micah Clatterbauch and Gabriel Hernandez,help administer this program and were invaluable in discussions onhow to best use their services and manpower.

    The cleanup was a huge success, and should the occasion arise,it is management's intention to utilize this program again

    Grease is the #1 problem with our Parks sewers.Fat-Free Sewers:

    How to prevent fats, oils, and greases fromdamaging your home and the Environment.

    Where does the grease come from?A by-product of cooking, grease comes from

    meat fats, lard, oil, shortening, butter, margarine,food scraps, baking goods, sauces, and dairy prod-ucts. When washed down the sink, grease sticks to

    the insides of sewer pipes (both on your property andin the streets). Over time, it can build up and blockthe entire pipe.

    Caution: Home garbage disposals do not keepgrease out of the plumbing system. Products, such asdetergents, that claim to dissolve grease may pass itdown the line and cause problems elsewhere.

    The results can be:

    Raw sewage overflowing in your home or yourneighbors home;

    Raw sewage overflowing into parks, yards, andstreets;

    Potential contact with disease-causing organisms;

    An expensive and unpleasant cleanup that oftenmust be paid for by you, the home or businessowner; and

    An increase in operation and maintenance costsfor local sewer departments, which causes highersewer bills for customers.

    What you can do to help;

    Help prevent sewer overflows by

    Never pouring grease down sink drains or into toi-lets;

    Scraping grease and food scraps into a can orthe trash for disposal (or recycling where avail-able);

    Putting baskets/strainers in sink drains to catchfood scraps, and other solids, and emptying theminto the trash; and

    Speaking with your friends and neighbors abouthow to keep grease out of sewers.

    Stop getting junk e-mail and regular junk mail

    Junkword means no, its not a word.

    Anyways (adv.) Junkword.Nonstandard. In any case. Theword does not have an s at theend. Origins: A long standing termused by illiterate people. Example:I was going to tell them, but any-ways, I decided not to.

    Humph (interj.) A grunt; snort.The sound one makes when flop-ping down on a couch bored orotherwise fatigued.

    Note: As strange as it may be,

    this is officially defined. Throughcomic depiction and general in-terjection, this word has recentlymade it through the woodworksand into common AmericanEnglish.

    Irregardless (adv.) Regard-less. The blending of irrespectiveand regardless. Although this isnot correct usage of the word, ithas been in widespread use as far

    back as 1927 when this American

    speech was taken note of by us-age commentators.

    Although this word has onlybeen in circulation for under 100years, we cant give it the privilegeof being an unword because of itsacceptance into Websters andAmerican Heritage dictionaries.

    Reiterate (v.in.) To restate, re-inforce repeatedly. Although thiscolloquialism has been widely ac-cepted into American English, it is

    in fact redundant. If you look atthe Oxford Dictionary, the defini-tion of iterate is to say or per-form again; repeat; thus, reiter-ate effectively means re-repeat.

    Note: To quote Websters dic-tionary, to state or do over againor repeatedly sometimes withwearying effect. Reiterate is in-tentionally redundant to suggestrepeating in excess, as a speak-

    er would come back on a point

    multiple times in order to nail his/her point across in a fashion thatwould keep listeners from forget-ting.

    Smidge (n.) Junkword. The di-rect measurement between thethumb and forefinger when told toprovide this much. Origins: Fromsmidgen, a very small amount.

    By now, I suspect everyone is

    familiar with snopes.com and/or truthorfic-

    tion.com for determining whether

    information received via e-mail is

    just that: true/false or fact/fiction.

    Both are excellent sites.

    Advice from snopes.com

    VERY IMPORTANT!!

    1) Any time you see an e-mail that says forward this on to10 (or however many) of yourfriends, sign this petition, oryoull get bad luck or youll getgood luck or youll see some-thing funny on your screen afteryou send it or whatever --- it al-most always has an e-mail trackerprogram attached that tracks thecookies and e-mails of those folksyou forward to.

    The host sender is getting acopy each time it gets forward-ed and then is able to get listsof active e-mail addresses touse in SPAM e-mails or sell to other

    Spammers.

    Even when you get e-mails thatdemand you send the e-mail on if

    youre not ashamed of God/Jesus--- that is e-mail tracking, and they

    are playing on our conscience.

    These people dont care how theyget your e-mail addresses - just as

    long as they get them. Also, e-mails that talk about a missing

    child or a child with an incurabledisease how would you feel ifthat was your child --- e-mail

    tracking. Ignore them and dontparticipate!

    2) Almost all e-mails that askyou to add your name and for-

    ward on to others are similar to

    that mass letter years ago thatasked people to send business

    cards to the little kid in Floridawho wanted to break the Guin-

    ness Book of Records for the mostcards. All it was, and all any ofthis type of e-mail is, is a way to

    get names and cookie trackinginformation for telemarketers and

    Spammers -- to validate active e-mail accounts for their own profit-able purposes.

    Do yourself a favor and STOPadding your name(s) to thosetypes of listing regardless how in-

    viting they might sound! Or makeyou feel guilty if you dont! Its allabout getting e-mail addressesand nothing more.

    You may think you are support-ing a GREAT cause, but you areNOT! Instead, you will be gettingtons of junk mail later and very pos-sibly a virus attached! Plus, we arehelping the Spammers get rich!Lets not make it easy for them!

    ALSO: E-mail petitions are NOTacceptable to Congress of anyother organization I.e. Socialsecurity, etc. To be acceptable,petitions must have a signed sig-nature and full address of theperson signing the petition, so thisis a waste of time and you are justhelping the e-mail trackers.
