We’d rounded up church people and talked to theBoy Scouts about serious help for our August 21 CreekCleanup but our efforts got trumped in a big way whenthe County came in with earth movers to dredge the bedof “our” Ward Creek watershed. A giant berm and heavy-duty pump were installed in early August and creek water isbeing diverted through the pipe visible in the photos along

the wall paralleling Miranda. There was some alarm among users of this popular bike

and walking path that the neatly carved and angled sides

were being prepared for concrete, like that on the other side of Folsom, shown center right (amazingly the nearest four spots are ducks), but county officials have said that thisisn’t planned. At bottom center, a large tree limb fell into thecleared creek bed and more foliage is so low pedestrianshave to duck. There is no shoulder at this spot as well asother areas as the sides have been sheared right up to the

path, so users are urged to exercise caution. At bottom right, a bewildered cat may possibly be won-

dering where all the field mice went.  Photos by Jeanie Schultz

Comedy Corner contributed by S. Higman (no. 188)(most copyright info unknown - web-exchange)

The Beggar

A man walks pass a beggar on the corner of thestreet where he works. The beggar holds outhis one hand and the man drops a coin into hishand. One day the man walks pass the beggaragain and notices the beggar is holding hold outboth his hands. He asks: “Why are you holding

out both of your hands?” The beggar replied, “You see sir, business is going so well I decided to open another branch”.

Job Interview Question

You are driving along in your car

on a wild, stormy night. You pass bya bus stop, and you see three people

waiting for the bus:

1. An old lady who

looks as if she is

about to die.

2. An old friend who

once saved your life.

3. The perfect man (or) woman you

have been dreaming about.

Which one would you choose to offer

a ride to, knowing that there could

only be one passenger in your car?

Think before you continue reading.

This is a moral/ethical dilemma that

was once actually used as part of a

 job application.

You could pick up the old lady,

because she is going to die, andthus you should save her first; or you

could take the old friend because he

once saved your life, and this would

be the perfect chance to pay him

back. However, you may never be

able to find your perfect dream lover

again.

The candidate who was hired (out

of 200 applicants) had no trouble

coming up with his answer.

He simply answered: “I would give the

car keys to my old friend, and let him

take the lady to the hospital. I would

stay behind and wait for the bus with

the woman of my dreams.”

Never forget to “Think Outside of the

Box.”

One Fine Day

Ladies and gentlemen, hobos and tramps,Bug-eyed mosquitoes and bowlegged ants!

I'm about to tell you a story I've never heard before,

So pull up a chair and sit on the floor.

Admission is free, so pay at the door.

One fine day, in the middle of the night,

two dead boys got up to fight.

Back to back, they faced each other,

drew their swords and shot each other.

A deaf policeman heard the noise,

and saved the lives of the two dead boys.

If you don't believe my lies are true,

ask the blind man, he saw it too!

Bragger

The strong young man at the construction site was braggingthat he could outdo anyone in a feat of strength. He made aspecial case of making fun of one of the older workmen.

After several minutes, the older worker had had enough.

“Why don't you put your money where your mouth is,” hesaid. “I will bet a week's wages that I can haul somethingin a wheelbarrow over to that outbuilding that you won't beable to wheel back.”

“You're on, old man," the braggart replied.“Let's see what you got.”

The old man reached out and grabbed thewheelbarrow by the handles. Then, nodding tothe young man, he said, “All right. Get in.”

  WOW!! Where did theSummer go?

It seems just like yesterday that the excitement of schoolbeing out was palatable andnow it has been replacedby the excitement of schoolreconvening.

Here at Spanish Ranch wehave been busy with installingnew flowers at the entry to the

“Ranch” along with replacing selecteddriveways.

The street sign project is still ontrack and it appears that installa-tion will commence very soon. Thesigns have been checked and doublechecked. All the approvals are in and

we are almost ready to go.

Psssttttt.... a gentle reminder about clubhouse rules. No animals areallowed in the fenced common area of the clubhouse, no skate boarding, bike riding, rollerblading or ball play-ing.

Speeders Beware....there is a plethora of speeding going on andit is not going unnoticed. On a

weekly basis there are many closeencounters of the dangerous kindbetween pedestrians and speeders.Reminder: the MAXIMUM speed

limit THROUGHOUT the “Ranch” is15 MPH. Please keep your speeddown and remind your guests as well.Geee.... I wonder if anyone can get a speeding ticket in Spanish Ranch?

Who wants to be first? Any hands?

Lot inspections are still ongoing we continue to be impressed with thegreat looking homes and pride that is being shown by many residents by the condition of their landscaping andhomes. GREAT JOB!!

Mr G's CornerGas Meter and Electric Meter

change outs are an ongoing processand Mr. G is still busy with that task.He has been inventorying the variousstorage areas we have here on the

“Ranch”.Mr. G asks that if you see someone

in the car wash areas that you don't know, please introduce yourself …because that person you don’t know might just be the one that is dumpinga TON of trash in the car wash areas.

Guillermo also asks if anyone seesstrangers outside the Park perimeter or strangers in the Park loitering, please contact the police.

Mr. G had some real excitement

last week and you may have heardthat we experienced a small fire onthe west side (Murcia Street) and it isassumed that this fire was started by loiterers outside the park, smoking.

Someone has been tagging the Parksignage with black spray paint. We askthat everyone keep their eyes open for anyone with a spray paint can.

Street light poles and fixtures aregoing to be cleaned, repaired andpainted. If anyone has decorations or other items on or near these street lights, please remove these items tomake Mr. G’s job somewhat easier.

Beware of HABAND!Advertisements for Haband! come in the

mail, or you see them in a magazine, even repu-table ones like AARP.

A resident ordered an item from HABAND! andpaid by check. Using just the information from hercheck, the company attempted to open a creditaccount in her name, asking that a credit card be

issued. The request was turned down because of insufficient informaton, BUT it was then reportedto the credit bureau that she'd been turned downfor a credit card, which adversely affected hercredit rating.

My experience: After ordering an item andpaying by check, I began to get regular mailingspurporting to be from Haband containing a smallcheck. Of course I am wise to THAT ploy, andknow that cashing that check signs you up forsomething so at first I just shredded them.

But each month another check would come, supposedly from a different company, however

they were all heads of the same snake, a shadycompany called TRILEGIANT. They come fromnames like “Haband Complete Home” or “BuyersAdvantage” or “Privacy Guard.” People falling forthis have paid hundreds of dollars for servicesworth little or nothing, and there are so manycomplaints to the BBB that they can't processthem all.

But the worst part was that if you did getsigned up for one of these questionable compa-nies, the fine print said specifically that “the creditcard that you used for your Haband! order” wouldbe used to pay for this service after the introduc-

tory period. You wouldn’t know what hit you, andif online complaints are any indication, they arereally hard to get stopped!

I wrote letter after letter to Trilegiant andHaband, and finally, after months, got thesesolicitations stopped. Yet I wonder if there aren’tsome poor cash-strapped people out there thatmight cash that check thinking a company called

“Privacy Guard” might be a good thing. Bottomline, if it says HABAND on it anywhere, steerclear! Shred the checks!

Trilegiant takes advantage of people under thefollowing names: BUYER BEWARE!

Flea Market:

The past Flea Market was discussed and Dawn said it  was a very good success with very few problems. She sug-gested that the Board Members draw up guidelines andregulations for the next event. There were some disputesover table space among sellers and a problem with people

wanting to come in the clubhouse before the start time. It

was suggested for the next time to set up a checklist, so we will be better organized at the next Flea Market.

Kevin Kelly has a contact list in place for communicating with the present sellers and participants. We were able toget all the money for the tables and spaces. The snack bar

went very well also and many thanks go out to those that  worked so hard, behind the scenes, setting up, selling, andcleaning up afterwards!

Ruth Horton said she would like to see the Association Table at the Flea Market better organized, next time, withprices set out clearly, and more room for the larger items.

 Arts and Crafts Fair:

It has been suggested to have an Arts and Crafts Fair, possibly next spring, in the clubhouse.

This would include hand-crafted crafts, made by resi-dents who wish to sell their handicrafts, and give us allan idea of the diverse talent and creativity of our SpanishRanch residents! This is an excellent opportunity to makethose holiday craft items to sell. An ad and flyer will comeout in advance to give all artists and craftspeople time tofinish projects. This event will not be another flea market-type venue of selling just anything, but rather, only arts andcrafts items. or new items suitable for gifts (a good chanceto “regift”).

 Thanksgiving Dinner:

It is official that the clubhouse is reserved for Thursday November 25th, Thanksgiving for a prepared meal for those residents who wish to join us for this holiday.

Board members and volunteers will make roasted tur-keys and possibly a ham, and all the traditional fixings. It

was suggested that we have a “Dessert Pot-Luck”, in whichthe participating residents can bring their favorite dessert.

We will get out an information flyer in early October. It willbe important for residents to reserve a space early so vol-unteers know how many to cook for. We want to make thisa warm, wonderful experience for those who can’t be withfamily on this “giving” of all holidays.

Don’t forget the food barrels in the clubhouse for donat-

ing much needed food for those less fortunate at this timealso.

Recycling:

It was suggested that the Board set up some kind of recycling program at all our venues. We must keep in mindto sort our trash into bottles, paper, food composting itemsand Kevin would like to see special receptacles for this. It

would also be fun to involve kids at our events in doing com-munity recycling programs. Board members will look intoinvesting in recycling bins or containers for this.

Civil Lawsuit:

The President has put together a civil lawsuit statement against the former Association president and treasurer,in the amount of $1721.85 in lost monies that were never signed over to the present Association. Dawn has triedmany times to reason with the plaintiffs involved andhas got little or no response, and is left to some sort of legal recourse (small claims). The locks were cut off the

Association’s cabinets in the clubhouse with required par-ties present. The present Assoc. now has new locks for the

Association’s property cabinets. Dawn and Kevin have thenew padlocks and keys.

Residents Forum:

It was suggested to have the first fifteen minutes of theBoard Meeting open to residents who are not Board mem-bers, but come to the meetings, as an Open Forum to air their complaints and/or suggestions and compliments, for

whatever concerns them. Rather than have this time at theend of the meetings, it would be better to devote a short time at the beginning.

Street signs for the Park::

The owners of the Park have agreed to put in new street signs for the Park and this is in progress. It is not clear

when this will be actually done, but it was implied that it willbe next month (Sept.)

Greg with Rutherford Investments said the golf puttinggreens to go in where one of the shuttle board courts isa good idea and he will be looking into pricing and avail-ability for this. It was earlier suggested at a meeting that a golf putting green for residents to use could be made in thearea of the often un-used shuttle board courts. A dog-run

suggestion was also made for somewhere alongside thesmall clubhouse. We need to use some of these neglectedareas of the park.

End of Meeting:

It was determined that the next Board Meeting will beSeptember 30th, Thursday, due to a very busy schedule for the president next month.

The next Association Meeting will be September 2nd, Thursday, 7pm.

Respectfully submitted by

 Judy Allen-Rodgers/interim secretary

President’s Report:

Residents have brought to our attention that management is not responding to requests to trim parktrees in a timely manner. Residents

are asked to tell us the date youmade the request and which trees areinvolved so we can pursue this morespecifically. Trimming perimeter ivy is the responsibility of management and some of that is being done. Weare working on getting regular main-tenance scheduled so residents wouldknow when growth in their yards willbe cut back.

Regional manager Greg has

assured us that street signs will be inby the end of the month. In addition,he states that management plans tomake the small clubhouse more user-friendly with the addition of couchesand chairs. They’d like to see it be a

space that residents could reserve asthey do the regular clubhouse.

Small claims paperwork to attempt to recover association funds from theprevious officers has been preparedand left with Treasurer to be filed.Locks were cut off the storage cabi-nets and storage space is being real-located.

Ceramics: Discussion, while abys-mally slow, is continuing. Have been

 working with Darlene to communicate

with Rutherford Corporate regard-ing expediting Darlene’s access toreview her space and to begin holdingclasses again. Greg has responded tomy emails and to Darlene’s, and hasexpressed his intention to support a reinstatement of ceramics classes. Hesaid that he is trying to work out how to facilitate this.

Update: Darlene was given accessto her materials, and she will beallocated two Saturdays a month for

ceramics classes with promises of cooperation from management.

Flea market report – Total pro-ceeds for association, success for ven-dors, lessons learned. Next salesevent may be in the spring. There’sbeen discussion about having a craft/gift fair where people can bring itemsthey’ve made, hobby collectables, or unwanted items suitable for “regift-ing”.

Creek cleanup was canceled dueto county work. County has informedus that they will not be cementing thesides, but are clearing silt. We willplan another cleanup next spring asneeded.

For some time, members of our Neighborhood  Watch Group have observed that traffic on Tampa andDickens at Ruus School has been extraordinarily heavy. Asa result we regularly see:

• Cars double parked in both directions blocking traffic• Children dropped in an unsafe manner, scrambling

across the street mid-block between cars• Adults dropping children off in the middle of thestreet

• Adults walking children across where there is nocrosswalk

We are very concerned about the possibility of a tragicaccident and would like to help prevent that from happen-ing if at all possible.

Our Hayward Police Department has put out some excel-lent flyers about traffic laws for parents and guardians whodrive children to school.

The school Principal and a parent group are actively put-ting out flyers and taking other measures to try to help thesituation when children are arriving and leaving school.

For those of us that do have children to drop off or pickup, we certainly need to follow the rules, be patient andkeep our children safe.

For those of us that do not have children, it is advisableto avoid the area during problem hours!

School Hours are as follows:

8:30– 3:30 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday 8:30– 1:00 Wednesday Kindergarten:8:30– 12:00 and 10:00– 2:05 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday

and Friday 8:30– 12:00 Wednesday Let's make an effort to keep children safe!

Por algún tiempo, miembros del Neighborhood Watch han observado mucho tráfico pesado en las calles;  Tampa y Dickens en la Escuela Ruus. Regularmente seobservan;

8:30– 3:30 lunes, martes, jueves y viernes8:30– 1:00 miércolesKindergarten:8:30– 12:00 & 10:00– 2:05 lunes, martes, jueves y

viernes8:30– 12:00 miércoles¡Vamos a hacer un esfuerzo de mantener seguros

a nuestros niños!

Welcome Committee ReportMembers: Patty Little; coordinator; Judy Allen-Rodgers;

Darlene Richardson. Attending: Jeanie Schultz

We are planning on making up “Welcome Packets” that   will be handed out to new residents of Spanish Ranch 1.  These packets will contain useful information, such ascontact information, park maps, Emergency information, such as gas, water shut-off, etc., emergency procedures andany other homeowner’s information pertaining to SpanishRanch 1.

We are also thinking of putting in local vendor informa-tion and maybe coupons, menus, etc. from some of our nearby vendors and merchants, (Starbucks, beauty shop,Butterfly Life gym, restaurants.)

We will make up a Welcome Letter and use some of theprevious information from packets that were started by the

 Association many years ago.

We are hoping to work closely with Management toensure that these packets get distributed to new residents.

The packets will be issued from the park’s office for qualified, registered new residents only.

Some suggestions were made at our first committeemeeting

• Get promotional products, like key chains, or coffeemug holders, stickers, etc. with the “Spanish Ranch 1”name on them to put into the packets.

• We could visit new residents, after they move in, andintroduce ourselves as the Welcome Committee, and try to answer any questions they might have about living inSpanish Ranch 1 Mobile Home Park.

Our ultimate goal as a committee is to warmly welcome

new residents and help make their move a positive and“welcoming” experience.

Traffic Safety At Ruus School / Mucho TráficoSubmitted by Spanish Ranch I Neighborhood Watch Group, reprinted from June 2010

facilities or lighting.

• Call if you need a tree trimmed or drains are blocked.

• ALSO, call the office to report suspicious activity,

solicitors, excess noise, etc.

• Report criminal activity the police first, but ALSO to park

management, and Neighborhood Watch!
