GOOD NEWSlsaiah 49:r4-r5l r Corinthian*4:r-5 / Matthew 6:24-34
"Jesus loves me, this I know."We nod our heads when asked whether God loves us, but what would you
say if you were askedr "Does God like you?"God's love is often difficult to fathom. Some of us are rational: "God loves
ev-eryone"-the unspoken thought being, "lt's his job to love me." We say
this about parents as well: "She's my mom, she has to say that." This idea ofGod's love never moves further than the head.
Other people compaftmentalize the love: "God loves me, but only when
l'm good" or "God loves only the good parts of me." Still others use God'slove as a shield against responsibility: "God forgives me no matter what I doand would never judge me harshly." God becomes a marshmal-low-allsugar, no nutrition.
ln reality, God's love holds us in delight as parents delight in theirchildren. God's love rejoices in us as the Creator rejoices in endless varietyand hidden mystery.God's love doesn't come out of neces-sity. Rather, it springs out of thenature of God. Out of love, God holds us account-able for our actions,
-forgives us when we ask, and is an abiding presence whether we recognize itor not. When we turn away, God is there. When we suffer, God walks withus. When we sin, God is the source of our conversion.
God grounds us in peace and joy. God doesn't love us because we are thegreatest and best-in that case, none of us would be worthy. God simplyloves. We have only to seek his righteousness to know that and believe it.

LIVING IN LOVE RETREAT MArCh 15-1 6, 2474
Often we say that we want to live our lives as Jesus would want us to.Sometimes we hear about Pope John Paul ll's Theology of the Body andwonder how to incorporate his divine plan for couples into our everyday lives.
Some days we feel like we want to love our spouse and make him or her feelloved and special. But it can be such a mystery to know and be able toactually make this real for us with our busy lives.
A Living in Love Weekend will be presented by the best-selling authors ofPassionate Parent Passionate Couple, Ed and Betty Coda, please join us at St.
Stephen Church on March 15-:.6. After they experienced this mini-retreat,they learned ways to solve this mystery for their own marriage and now theywant to share this good news with others. (Pease take home aflier.)
Please join them. See the website www.livinginlove.org for moreinformation and to register or call 839-o837.

My 14-ymr-old daugfiter is very thin. She soys the practtue ofgtying up food iluring Lent is proof tlwt sfu Lnnors God by not
eating How can I conui.nce her God doan't want her tn starue
hottlf Is tlrere anything eke slu can d.ofor Lent?
According to the Code of Canon Lau, at age 14 yourdaughter isn't required to fast (eating only one full meal a
day, no snacks); the Church requires this only of peopleaged 18 through 59 because people outside those age
groups need more than one full meal a day to maintaingood health (1252).
She is, however, old enough to abstain from meat as
required of Catholics aged 1.4 rnd older. But she shouldreplace that meat with another source of protein likecheese or fish.
Please tell your daughter that the knten fast is aboutpreparing our heafts to celebrate the joy of Easter. Fasting
and abstinence are not about starving or losing weight;they're about making room for God, deepening ourrelationship with Christ.
And the word abstain isn't limited to matters involvingfood. Your daughter can abstain from watching television, using her cell phone except in emergencies, or using thecomputer for anything other than schoolwork Prayer andalmsgiving (donating money and/ or time to charity) are
also part of our Lenten practice. Anyone can safely dothese thinp to achieve the same result: growing closer toGod in preparation for Easter.

The next step: Rite of Election (March 9th)
Those who have been accepted as Catechumen now move
forward to the Order of the Elect (something like electing
someone to office). The are received by the Bishop at the
Cathedral, they sign their names in the Book of the Elect and
begin the final days of preparation. Please keep them in your
prayers.
