PARISH NEWS CONTINUED

ST. BONAVENTURE COLUMBUS, NE

From our pastor…

On Monday, we celebrate Columbus Day. The day was established in 1934 by President Roosevelt, with the help of the Knights of Columbus, to honor the founder of America and bolster American pride. It’s true that Christopher Columbus wasn’t

the first founder of America. A Norse Viking named Leif Eriksson, sailed to what is Newfoundland some 500 years earlier. However, Columbus made America famous. Columbus actually was sailing to the West Indies, but landed in San Salvador, now known as the Bahamas. The reason for his journey was to find gold and spices. This wasn’t because he wanted to get rich. The money was to be used to fund a crusade to take back Jerusalem from the Muslims. Columbus noted that the natives were very kind and honest. He liked them a lot and treated them well. On successive voyages, men he sailed with became greedy, treated the natives poorly and forced them into slavery. Columbus vehemently opposed this, and many of the abuses occurred during his absence. Columbus’ devotion to Christ and our Blessed Mother was strong. As a faithful disciple, he also wanted to share the good news of Christ with the natives. He believed they should learn the tenants of the Faith before being baptized, rather than being forced to convert. All these facts are stated in Columbus’ journals. It’s

important to know the truth and not believe everything we

hear and read in the media. If you would like to learn more,

read Columbus and the Quest for Jerusalem by Carol

Delaney.

The weekly sessions include prayer time, a video teaching and small group discussion. Beginning Tuesday, October 12, 6:30 p.m. in St. Bon’s Parish Center. ST.BON’S THANKSGIVING RAFFLE Purchase your raffle tickets before or after each weekend Mass! $20 per ticket or buy 3 tickets for $50! Need not be present to win, drawing will be held around Thanksgiving 2021! *We need lots of volunteers to help sell raffle tickets. Call Elaine Farley-Zoucha (402-615-0864) or scan the QR code with your phone to sign up to volunteer!

NEW AND IMPROVED! You may have noticed that we made a change to the microphone at the ambo; it is longer, stronger, and located on the opposite side of the ambo! We will have some trial and error as every lector learns how to best position the microphone for the best individ-ual impact. The number of people in the church, ambient noise, height of the person, distance of the text, and other items impact what you hear. Please allow some grace and pray for our lectors as they each learn how to best ‘lend God our voice’ in this ministry! Thank you!

REJOICE: FINDING YOUR PLACE IN THE ADVENT STORY

If you are looking for an Advent Devotional that will absolutely change your heart this coming Advent season, look no further than this one published by Ascension Press! Each day, in a few short pages, Fr. Mark Toups provides you with aids to help guide your prayer: A Word, A Reflection, A Psalm & A Prompt. You can do this devotional on your own, or better yet, in a small group! Cost of the book is $12.50, but we are planning to do a bulk order which brings the cost down to $8/book. If you are interested in ordering a Rejoice journal for your-self, a family member or for your small group - please email Sa-rah at [email protected]! Orders are due by October 10!

The 2022 Mass book is open! Pa-rishioners are able to schedule up to 3 Mass intentions (up to 2 weekend Masses). Non-

parishioners can schedule 1 Mass. Intentions must be made in person at the rectory and cannot be taken over the phone. The Parish Office hours are Monday-Thursday 8:30 - Noon; 1:00 - 4:30PM and Friday 8:30 - Noon. Mass offered for an intention is of great value, even if you are not able to be physically present for the Mass. Additional intentions can be given as memorials or submitted to be sent to the retired priests in the Archdiocese.

EVERY SACRED SUNDAY MASS JOURNALS Our small groups are putting together an order for Every Sacred Sunday Mass Journals. If you would like to be a part of this quantity discount opportunity, contact Cheryl Drozd by text/call at 402-910-2868 or [email protected] by 5pm Sunday, Octo-

SMALL GROUP TRAINING Anyone who would like to learn how to lead a Small Group dur-ing Advent is welcome to join us for a small group training on November 4 at 7:00PM, Saint Bon’s Parish Center. If you are interested in this training OR would like to be in a small group this Advent, please text/call Cheryl Drozd at 402-910-2868 or email [email protected]. “This was both a spiritual and learning experience for Coni and I. After one of the group read the Gospel, we all shared what we heard and how Jesus spoke to us. Sometimes there were questions, and Tim would do a great job of explaining history and events leading up to the setting in the Gospel, and provided insight most of us did not have. Four of us had traveled to the Holy Land in 2019, and walked in places described in the Gospel, so it was good to share that experience also. While we tried to keep our session to an hour, it typically went longer due to continued discussion and sharing. I hope we start again this coming Advent Sea-son. Also, Connie C. makes great coffee and muffins, so that helped in getting us back to the next meeting. Just like in the Gospels, sharing some bread and drink brings us together.”

-Dennis and Coni Grennan
