Generally when I write my column each week I talk about things that are going on in the community – but this time my brain is so full of what is going on in our office that I don’t have any more brain capacity for anything else. Our office is on the move! After 25 years GCNews will be moving from our Beerwah Parade office to a renovated house at 16 Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains. And the most stressful word in that last sentence is ‘renovated’ – over the last year we have basically done a total makeover. And I have to say it has been nothing like any of those TV shows where the couple goes away for a few days and comes back to somewhere they can barely recognise. However we have been fortunate to have great service from all of the local tradies and suppliers that

made the project happen. And without a doubt my absolute favourite is the local Telstra technician – Kevin – who was able to work a miracle. Of the 17 Telstra people we spoke to, he was the only one who could see what the issues were and then resolved them on the day.Which is amazing, as we had been told that the situation would be resolved sometime in June – what a difference it makes having local operators who understand what is needed and they just get on with the job. Thanks to everyone who has helped make the renovation run as smoothly as possible, we will be doing a Renovation Guide in a few months and plan to feature the great work of everyone involved.

Local NewsFrom scrapheap to outback adventureTravelling 1,400 kilometres into the outback is never going to be an easy trip, so just imagine doing that on a Sachs Madass 140cc motorcycle. Then factor in that the best speed for the bike is around 80 kilometres and..oh, then there’s the fact that the bike started its life in two boxes. But that’s all part of the challenge for Tina Eccles, 46, from Peachester, who along with her friend, Narelle Rimmer, (who will ride a Suzuki DR 650) will be participating in the 2011 Scrapheap Adventure Ride.Leaving on April 18 Tina and Narelle headed for Cameron Corner - where Qld, NSW and SA meet – knowing that 100 per cent of all funds raised will go to Down Syndrome NSW.“It’s just such a worthwhile cause,” said Tina. “They only get around 5 per cent of their funding from the government, so 95 per cent of their funding comes from this sort of activity.“When you think of Down Syndrome their clients don’t get better, their clients need lifelong support. That makes it a very difficult thing to fund. That’s what made me jump on board with it, recognising that,” she said. Participants in the Scrapheap Adventure Ride had to use a bike that cost less than $1,000. Tina got hers for a bargain $350.00 as a wreck. She has worked tirelessly since November getting it ready. Luckily Tina’s lifelong hobby has been doing up bikes, cars, hotrods and more.

“My father used to restore vintage cars when I was a kid. So I grew up around that sort of thing. Dad could never get me out of the garage. It’s where I wanted to be,” Tina said.Tina has also raced bikes all her life so going slow on this trip will be one of the major challenges. She’s also looking forward to having a break from Uni.“It’s a big wind down for me. In four years since I’ve been studying Psychology I haven’t had one break where I’ve gone away. It’s win, win situation all around,” she said.Tina is well on the way to reaching her target of $1,000 and she would like to thank the following supporters: Scooterstyle Noosa, DHZ minimoto, Small Wheel Deals, Lawnton and Pirelli Tyres, Australia. If you would like to donate visit http://tina-eccles.scrapheapadventure.com.au or for more information visit http://scrapheapadventureride.com.au/ Tina said there is one thing she is really looking forward to, especially since she will need to pack plenty of spare bike parts and make regular checks along the way. “My triumphant return up the driveway.”

Another Division 1 Candidate steps forwardRhys Reynolds, 20, from Glass House Mountains has announced his intention to stand as a candidate in the next Sunshine Coast Regional Council election. He has lived in the area for 15 years, was educated locally and was School Captain of Beerwah High School in 2008. He is currently attending Sunshine Coast University doing a Degree in Public Relations.Rhys said he has always been interested politics. “It’s always been definitely a big interest of mine and what better way to start off than at Council, which is the level where you get to meet the people the most. “Essentially you’re representing the people and their needs in your local community and that’s what it should be,” he said.

Although Rhys has been involved in numerous charities and fundraisers in the area, however he said “I don’t think you really need to big note yourself, it’s what you stand for essentially. You can say you’ve done all these amazing things but it’s what you’re going to do that people really care about.”Rhys said he sees Caloundra South and the Water Grid as the two main issues for Division 1 and on a lower level, employment opportunities in Division 1. He’s looking forward to working with people in the community such as farmers and small businesses.“Farmers are essentially what the region is all about so they need good representation,” he said.He is also aware that his age could be an issue for some people.“What I lack in life experience I make up in enthusiasm. This region is something that I’m so passionate about, and I think that passion is something that is needed in the job. You can always learn things, but you can’t learn enthusiasm.”Standing as a candidate is an exciting and big step for Ryhs and he’s already had great feedback and support from the community.“Just representing the region that you’re passionate about… you can do so much. For instance the water, the state can say they know so much about their regions, but no-one knows their region better than a Councillor does. I think that’s probably the best thing and that’s what I’m looking forward to.“Because I live with my grandparents, I’ve seen this region at a retiree’s level and Gen Y level – and that’s given me a good perspective of it,” he said.

What’s the story? Peachester Range, Kilcoy-Beerwah RoadA recent enquiry from readership in the Peachester community highlighted uncertainty around the status of the Peachester Road upgrade. A recent update from Main Roads (North Coast Region/Sunshine Coast Office), as issued March 29 to the office of Member for Glasshouse Andrew Powell, read “Transport and Main Roads is focused on reconnecting Queensland people, communities and industry by restoring a safe and efficient transport network. The department has a three-phase multi-modal approach to the flood and cyclone response – incident response, recovery and restoration. “The focus during the incident response and recovery phases was to open state-controlled roads to a trafficable condition. These emergent works have been undertaken on the Peachester Range to stabilise the road so it could be opened to a single lane under traffic control.“The next phase is restoration, which aims to realise a permanent repair solution to fully re-open the road. Currently the department is working towards these permanent repairs and is carrying out the necessary geotechnical investigations, designs and funding submissions to enable permanent repair works to begin. It is anticipated that construction will begin in the second half of this year and the department will keep you updated on progress.”Mr Powell spoke to GCNews, acknowledging the concerns of local residents.“I know this is a frustration for residents in Peachester and Beerwah and for those who commute between the area and I would just ask for your patience.“We have serious damage on nearly all the main roads in the electorate of Glasshouse and all have some traffic control devices to circumnavigate the landslide. People need to be aware when they see a team pack up and move on that there are actually different crews for different phases of the work; be assured it is an absolute priority and we are getting to it as soon as we possibly can,” he said.

Voice of an AngelAngelic Cooke of Beerwah was recently awarded first prize in the Maleny Idol competition.Angelic said the prize money has come in handy for her young family.Performing Delta Goodrem’s ‘Not me not I’ and Kate Bush’s haunting classic ‘Wuthering Heights’ to backing tracks, Angelic made an impact on both the audience and judges.Locals may recall Angelic as the lead vocalist in last year’s Beerwah Christmas Carols. With little vocal training Angelic is essentially a self taught singer and hasn’t had the luxury of engaging with her passion for nearly 10 years due to family commitments and previously running her own business. Making the hinterland her home last year, where her parents Deborah and Greg Cooke reside, Angelic is finding the move beneficial to her family’s lifestyle. So much so she recently found time to enter X Factor, and was put through the required entry rounds to a series of auditions, in front of a producer. Angelic was then photographed and tested, and sent through to perform in front of four judges (three producers and one of the people was Australian Idol voice Trainer), at the Gold Coast. Angelic now has a nervous wait until May 16 to see if she has gotten through to the Brisbane audition.“What winning the Maleny Idol has done for me is it has given me extra confidence to pursue my goal of getting into X Factor,” she said.“It has also shown me how important it is to have the support of local people. Winning Maleny Idol has given me the feeling that this is just the beginning of a wonderful new journey that will

far exceed any experience apart from having my children that I have had so far.“Thank you to the Maleny Hotel, the people of Maleny and to all of my friends and family who are so supportive of singing.”Angelic also wishes to highlight that the gentleman who came second in the Maleny Idol was Ron Smith of Beerwah who by all reports has performed on cruise ships and gave heartfelt renditions of ‘From this Moment’ and Billy Thorpe’s version of ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’.Beerwah sure has got talent!

Life lived to the fullestThe Gregson and Weight Chapel at Caloundra was a sea of pink and purple when 700 friends and family came together in a celebration of Jess Wall’s life on Monday, April 11.Young Jess lost her fight for life on Tuesday, April 5 at the Mater Children’s Pediatric Intensive Care unit in Brisbane - she gave it everything she had and was brave to the end. What did help Jess more than anyone could imagine was the constant messages, which were read to her daily by her parents, Kelly and Clayton, from her great friends and family in Beerwah, Glass House and Landsborough and across the sunshine coast.Clayton, Kelly and Jess’s brother Joshua have been deeply touched and are forever grateful for all the support, messages and donations they have received.“They’re truly helping us to get through this time of missing our Jessica. We celebrate her life everyday and we were so blessed to have had her as part of our family,” said Kelly.Jess lived her life to the fullest and did more in her nine years than a lot of people do in a lifetime. Jess would love to pass on the message of ‘live life to the fullest and make every moment count’ Kelly said.A friend quoted Jessica from the dictionary as a hero - a person with exceptional bravery, a person admired for superior qualities and achievements.“When Jess passed she left the biggest brightest rainbow over the Mater Children’s hospital, letting everyone know she will be with us forever and we have renamed it a ‘Jess Bow’,” Kelly said.Clayton, Kelly and Josh would like to give huge thanks to their community and the schools, shops, friends and family for all their support and said “we are so lucky to be a part of such an awesome place.”

Lions Welcome DinnerContributed by Bob BannerThe Beerwah Lions Club is close to completing arrangements for its second Welcome Dinner to be held on May 19 in the Beerwah Community Hall.A local real estate agent said last year’s highly successful event had given newcomers to the area a chance to meet other newcomers, as well as key personnel from emergency services, such as police, fire brigades and ambulance. It also gave the opportunity for these services to address the gathering and explain the correct procedures for dealing with local emergencies.A lot of the newcomers formed friendships with other newcomers and well established locals as a result of the Lions efforts in organising this dinner, she said.Local real estate offices already have invitations and price details ready to hand out, she added.

Chairperson of the organising committee Max Pinwill, said the Lions had been fortunate enough to obtain the services of John Major, a highly regarded bush poet, as the entertainer for the evening. Several other groups will also address the gathering, giving details of the special interest roles they play in the community. The dinner is held at the Beerwah Community Hall, at 6.30pm for a 7.00pm start, with tickets $40.00 per person. The event is catered by Suzanne and Oskar from Pasta d’ Vine. Their culinary delights alone will make this a worthwhile event.

Can you give me a name please?“I’m big, absolutely gorgeous and the newest addition the Australia Zoo family. My mum, Caballe, a Southern White Rhinoceros gave birth to me at 3.15am Tuesday, April, 12. I weigh between 50 and 60 kilos already. To celebrate, Australia Zoo is offering the public the opportunity to name me via auction website eBay. Visit australiazoo.com.au for more information. All money raised will go to Australia Zoo Conservation Projects in Africa.”Manu Ludden, Head of Australia Zoo’s Africa Department, said the female calf is doing extremely well, and has already started feeding from her proud mother Caballe (pronounced KA-BARL-EE). This is Cabelle’s fourth calf, and the first Rhino to be born at Australia Zoo.“Our little Rhino Calf was on the move immediately after being born and she has already had at least three good long feeds. Mum is also doing well,” Manu said.

Australia Zoo's rhino calf

Caballe has been with Australia Zoo since August 2010 after she travelled from Hamilton Zoo in Auckland. The Southern White Rhino is the second largest land mammal and despite their name they are actually grey in colour. Rhino calves are not born with horns – they grow horns when they are older – and they are weaned at around three months and can suckle up to two years. The Southern White Rhinoceros which is listed as ‘Near Threatened’ by IUCN due to continued poaching threats and the high illegal demand for its horn. An estimated 20,150 White Rhinos are left in the wild, and 780 in captivity. If you miss out on the chance to name the Rhino calf, don’t worry, you can still be one of the first people in the world to adopt her! Adopting plays an important role in Australia Zoo’s ongoing fight for wildlife conservation by allowing the Zoo to concentrate on their breeding programs, state of the art wildlife exhibits, vital rehabilitation programs, veterinary requirements and general animal husbandry needs. Visit www.australiazoo.com.au/get-involved/adopt-an-animal/ for details. At the moment the calf needs time to get to know her mum, so she will remain off display, however Australia Zoo is very excited to offer the public the chance to meet her when their Africa exhibit opens in time for the September School Holidays.

Winners of each race received a medallion, and the two runners up received certificates. All three from each race also made the St Paul’s Cross Country Team, which will compete at the Caboolture District Cross Country on May 19 at APEX Park, Caboolture. There was also friendly rivalry between the three houses, with a very close contest between Jeffreys and Gregor. Jeffreys won out though, with a final score of 462 points. Carnival convenor Mrs Cheryl Button was ably helped by a team of parents and staff, who also added to the enthusiastic cheering by the large number of spectators and supporters. It was truly a wonderful day for all.

Winners in the St Paul’s Cross Country, with their certificates and medallions

Winners are grinners! The senior primary students battled it out in the St Paul’s Lutheran Primary School Cross Country recently. The children had been training in PE classes for a number of weeks, and they were well prepared to run the 1 kilometre (nine year olds), 1.5 kilometres (10 year olds) and 2 kilometres (11 / 12 year olds). St Paul’s would like to congratulate the following winners: Beau Howard and Emily Ferris (nine years), Scott Mernin and Keeley Thomas (10 years), and Campbell Nass and Tayla Moore (11/12 years).

Glasshouse Toastmasters and Glenview Primary School Contributed by Martine Goedhart

On Tuesday, April 12, Glasshouse Country Toastmasters finished an eight week Speechcraft Course at the Glenview Primary School. It was a real pleasure to teach this dynamic group of 21 Year 7 students. At the graduation night, held in their beautiful new hall, on Wednesday, April 13, they all surprised their family and friends with the

progress they made in the eight weeks of the course. All the speeches were written by the students themselves and were of excellent quality. They were either informative, hilarious or brought a message to the audience. Students who did not give a speech on the night took on a role as Chairman, Vice Chairman (introducing the speakers) Table Topic Master or Evaluator. They all did a terrific job.Every year the Youth Leadership Coordinators are amazed how quickly the children discover their hidden talents, when guided in the right direction. There was no hesitation to come to the lectern and complete their assignment, no nerves, if so, they did not show it. We’d like to thank the Glenview School for offering this course to their students and for the last six years it’s been made part of their curriculum. A special thanks to Sue O’Brian, (the Year 7 teacher) for her extra support to the students. To the class of 2011, we wish you all the best in years to come, you’re all winners.

This group photo captures the excitement and happy spirit of the group

COOKING SCHOOL

Science sparks real interest Contributed by Jane TozerThis term has been an exciting one for science at Beerwah State Primary School. Lots of different science explorations are happening in our fantastic laboratory. Students have participated in activities that reinforce lab safety and working in teams.Year 7’s have been investigating chemistry and the difference between physical and chemical reactions. We have created toothpaste for elephants using a chemical reaction, created and then separated saturated solutions, and exploded plastic bags. All sessions focussed on the scientific method and exploring variables.Year 6’s have explored the movement of tectonic plates using scientific models and will relate this to the impact tectonic movement has on earthquakes. We have unfortunately seen the devastating consequences of this movement in events such as the Christchurch earthquake.Year 4 has seen one class focussing on space and in the lab we have looked at the role of gravity; a pull force and the push forces necessary to overcome gravity. This will result in the students developing a fair test in order to develop the most efficient bottle rocket.

The other class has been involved in a life and living unit where they are testing how plants move water to their leaves and the effect of salinity on plant growth. Year 5's have joined in the activity of their partner year level, some doing earthquakes and others life and living.

Crafty kids visiting Eumundi Markets over the school holidays will also have the opportunity to get creative by taking part in kids craft workshops on Wednesday, April 20 and Saturday, April 23.The workshops are being led by local craft queen and ceramic artist Merrie Tomkins. While the workshops are designed for children, big kids (teenagers and adults) are welcome to take part too – if spaces permit. Children under five must be accompanied by a carer – to help them with the tricky bits! “Merrie teaches people how to paint their own ceramics – funky pots and plates, piggy banks, and more,” Peter says. “She will have egg cups for Easter, and a range of options for those wanting to make a personalised gift.”Eumundi Markets is renowned as the best art and craft market in Australia – where you can meet the artists and the makers face-to-face. Discover something different, something special, something handmade at our magical outdoor gallery under the trees. Visit www.eumundimarkets.com.au or call 5442 7106 for further information.

Supporting the boys at the frontContributed by Helen PageLast month we featured the fundraising undertaken by local communities during the 1920s to support the Beerburrum Hospital. However those efforts were conservative in comparison to the extraordinary community campaigns which emerged during World War 1, to support ‘the boys at the front’. Every small town had farewelled many young men and in an effort to do their bit on the home front, friends and relatives set about the tasks of cooking, knitting, sewing and fundraising to provide some comforts for those serving abroad. The Nambour Chronicle during the war years reflects the efforts by Sunshine Coast communities. From early 1915 to late 1918, there are stories from every part of this region reporting on concerts, dances, sports days, fetes, carnivals and working bees – all united in the cause of supporting ‘our boys’.It appears that eventually most towns had a branch of the Soldiers’ Comforts Fund, the Red Cross, or a Patriotic Committee. Their efforts were augmented by local groups like the Mooloolah and Glenview Ladies Help Society and the Girls’ Guild.Peachester and Bald Knob both formed Red Cross Committees early in the war. On June 2, 1916, a report headed ‘Beerwah – Soldiers’ Comforts Fund’ states: ‘The ladies of Beerwah having started a Soldiers’ Comforts Fund, a goodly number met in the School of Arts on Thursday afternoon, May 25,

to return work which they had done in the shape of making warm clothing for our boys at the front. It is very pleasing to see such good workers come forward to help in such a good cause, but there is still room for more helpers.’In 1916 local Comforts Funds amalgamated to form a national body known as the Australian Comforts Fund (ACF), and their work is well documented in histories of the Great War. Socks were urgently needed, since soldiers could not wash or dry their socks in the trenches, and Australian women knitted tens of thousands of socks. In the winter of 1916 alone, the ACF provided 80,000 hand-knitted pairs of socks.Locally, the Nambour Chronicle reveals that many functions and collections supported specific causes like the Heroes Day Fund, Sailors Day Fund, Wounded Soldiers Fund, and Soldiers’ Christmas Cheer Fund.In May 1916, the Nambour State School advertised a Patriotic Fair, with ‘All Proceeds to the Red Cross and Soldiers’ Repatriation Fund.’ On January 11, 1918, ‘The amount collected by the ladies of Bald Knob for Heroes Day Fund amounted to £6/5/6...’; and on May 31, 1918 we read that a Bazaar at Peachester for Red Cross Day raised ‘the highly creditable total of £67 as the result of all efforts.’Sources: Nambour Chronicle, www.nambour-chronicle.comAustralians at War, www.anzacday.org.au

Ceremony at SeasonsResidents of Seasons aged care community in Caloundra will host State Member Mark McArdle for their Anzac Day celebrations. Season’s community Manager Lesley Mileson said they are proud and privileged to have many ex-servicemen and women among its residents.“Anzac Day is in recognition of the extraordinary service provided by these great Australians who have given so much for our country,” Ms Mileson said.Seasons residents and their families have been invited to attend the celebrations.

How to wear Anzac medalsThe ANZAC day service came a little earlier this year for Glasshouse Country Christian College but was just a poignant and moving as ever. Two very special guests were Gavin Smith and Peter McDonald, representatives from the RSL.Mr Smith spoke to the students about the correct way to wear medals and taught them a helpful way of remembering.“Medals that you earn yourself you wear on your left hand side and you remember that because it is over your heart,” he said. “If you are wearing medals earned by your grandfather or other relatives, you wear them on your right side.” Mr Smith said it was very important to wear the medals in the correct way as it shows respect and understanding.Mr McDonald led the wreath laying ceremony and each class laid a wreath that they had made. The students presented items that showed what they had learned about ANZAC Day leading up to the big event. Year 6 students gave an acrostic presentation showing a different aspect of ANZAC Day for each letter of the alphabet. Year 3 students read some of the poems they had written in class, showing amazing insight for such young children. The service concluded with a moving rendition of the last post and the National Anthem.

Glasshouse Country View Club Zone ConferenceContributed by Pauline Clarke, Publicity OfficerEight of our members attended the View Club Zone Conference at Caloundra on April 8. One of the prime purposes of Zone Conferences is to submit resolutions that reflect women’s voices and issues. These resolutions are submitted through the View Club network and the most appropriate finally end up being presented to the public and various government authorities. In the past, the View Club organisation has been instrumental in such issues as national breast cancer screening and mandatory seat belts for all children travelling to school or on excursions in designated school buses.A highlight of this years conference was a ‘Decade fashion parade’ with our own Lydia Ockhuisen looking stunning dressed in 1940s attire as Mrs Simpson; enough to make any man abdicate! The next View Club meeting will be held on April 20 at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club at 11.00am for an 11.30am start. This meeting will include lunch and our speaker will be Roger Landbeck from the Maleny Light Horse Troop. Anyone who would like to join the View Club would be most welcome. Please contact Joy on 5439 9094 or Lydia on 5438 7894 who will be pleased to supply any further information about the club. The View Clubs raise funds for, and support, the Smith Family Charity. The Smith Family helps unlock opportunities for disadvantaged Australian children.

Here we go again, Anna BlighHopefully Queensland will wake up before the next elections. If we leave this current Government in, you can say ‘Goodbye’ to Queensland as we know it.Think about it, all we heard when Queensland had the last lot of floods and the cyclone etc was Anna Bligh. What a fantastic job she did, on television every two to three hours with updates etc, ‘finger on the pulse’, why, even our illustrious Prime Minister took a back seat. Are you also aware how the media gave her glowing reports and the big magazines showered her with photo shoots? Now cast your minds back to the first lot of flooding Brisbane and Queensland had, just prior to Christmas from memory, when Premier Anna was on holidays, where was she then? With the second lot of flooding, quickly followed by the cyclones, she slipped into top gear and pulled ‘a fast one’ on us poor old Queenslanders, already reeling from their mismanagement and poor judgment. She calls a ‘State of Emergency’. A pity she didn't show that tenacity in her earlier situations and handling of the State. This now allowed her to take over completely, the Opposition had to shut up shop and stand back, yes, that's why you never saw or heard from them. Now she is back in the saddle again and what is her latest assault on Queensland? Our rates up by a predicted 60 per cent or was it, $60.00 a year. Please Queensland, wake up to this Government, at least the Opposition now have a pretty smart operator at the helm in Mr Campbell Newman, let's give him a go.

Call for Community Action on Caloundra SouthAgree with it or not, most of us now acknowledge, that the Caloundra South project will set the development tone for the region, for the foreseeable future. Not only that, it's obvious that it will have major economic, social and environmental impacts on the surrounding communities, including the Glasshouse Country townships.Division 1 currently contains a diverse mix of communities, which I love, but the fact is that they are all inter-connected and Caloundra South will affect all of them; But in what ways?If delivered on the ground, the 'best practice' intentions expressed in the proposed ULDA

development plan are good, in fact very good as far as they go but we’ve all seen good projects slide into mediocre or poor projects as they are implemented. What’s going to be different with Caloundra South? The answer has to be us, the local communities of interest. It’s up to us to take a big stake in this project, regardless of whether it is under state or local government control. That’s the only way to ensure the best outcome for our communities while helping create a new much larger one that understands what living, working and travelling in the area really means.Right now, the dominant sense is that this development is an imposition upon us as an inevitable result of growth. We need to make sure that the Cal' South development will actually improve our region’s economic viability (real jobs), cultural distinctiveness and environmental sustainability. That's a lot less likely to happen, if we leave it to others. Get as involved as you can and check out the draft planning document available online at www.ulda.qld.gov.au. Submissions are due by the May 20 deadline. I will be putting one in based on local discussions so you’re welcome to feed your ideas into that over the coming weeks by contacting me through: email [email protected] or facebook or website www.pickrick1.com

ANZAC Day is almost upon usOne day in the year when we pause to remember those valiant men and women, who fought so bravely to defend our freedom. We remember those that returned, the wounded, the shell shocked, those whose lives had been irrevocably changed. We remember those who never recovered from the horrors they had witnessed and we remember the families who lost their loved ones. We especially remember those who died protecting what is precious to us. We remember our brave men and women who are still fighting for freedom all around the world. Please, do not forget them this ANZAC Day.It is impossible not to know of the on-going dispute between the RSL Sub-Branch and the Citizens Memorial Club. Do not let it over shadow our day of remembrance. There may not be rum and milk or two-up or breakfast for all but is that all ANZAC Day about? We will remember them.

Name suppliedBeerwah

How will you commemorate Anzac Day?For almost 96 years ANZAC Day has had a central place in the hearts and minds of Australians.ANZAC Day is a reminder of the debt of gratitude that we owe as a nation to the Anzacs, to those who are currently serving and to those who have served in the past. The ANZAC tradition was born on the shores of Gallipoli during the First World War, when Australians embarked on their first large scale campaign in a major international conflict as a newly formed federated nation. The exploits of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps in 1915 forged a legend of courage, resourcefulness, determination and mateship.During the next three years of the First World War, these qualities were exhibited by Australians in every theatre of war in which they

fought, particularly in the Middle East and on the Western Front.Australia suffered horrific losses with more than 60,000 deaths in the First World War, an extraordinary sacrifice for a young nation with a population of just four and a half million at the time. A generation decimated by this horrific bloody campaign.Australians played an important role in many of the pivotal battles leading to the eventual Allied victory in 1918 over the German forces who were occupying large areas of France and Belgium.During the course of the war Australian troops fought bravely with 64 men awarded the Victoria Cross for valour. The ANZAC spirit remained a source of inspiration for Australians in conflict throughout the last century, including the Second World War, Korea, Malaya, Vietnam, the Gulf War, Iraq and Afghanistan, Rwanda, Timor Leste and the Solomon Islands. And invariably Australia has deservedly earned a reputation for raising tough, resilient and disciplined military forces, well respected by our international allies. There will also be services in Afghanistan and Timor Leste and the many places around the world where members of the Australian Defence Force are currently serving, carrying on the ANZAC tradition, as well as in almost every town and city, however small, across the nation. We need no reminding that today we are at war and that in Afghanistan, Australian personnel are constantly putting their lives on the line, doing their nation's bidding in the best of the Anzac tradition. These brave men and women will know that they are in our thoughts this ANZAC Day.As the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, I encourage each and every Australian to find new ways to commemorate ANZAC Day keeping the spirit ANZAC alive across the globe on April 25, 2011.Lest we forget.

The Hon Warren Snowdon MPMinister for Veterans’ Affairs

Minister for Defence Science and Personnel

Development for what?Let’s stop talking about abstract plans and other diversionary tactics and let’s bring Council back to the things that people want and need today. It’s nice to quote some figures and spin the numbers out, but why can’t we just deal with the realities? The roads need fixing, identified waste water management plants that can’t cope and projects that favour the few instead of the community, to name a few.But most of all a Council that manages rates and levy’s and works to reduce them. We need a transparent Local Government who will interact with their community, and neigh with us. Build things the way we ask, where we ask and when we ask. Not dictate to us, but involve us.Caloundra South may or may not return to Council control, but does this mean we get the outcomes we need or even want? There are elements of council and others who see no problem with it and are content to sit on the fence without conviction; it’s time to take a side. It is good to see the Coast grow but there are elements of Caloundra South and Bellvista 2 amongst others that do not have a place in it. After all just because the developer’s show pretty slides and offers a few shiny beads, doesn’t mean we sell ourselves short. I work and live here on the Coast for reasons other than a new concrete jungle.

Museum tourThe Landsborough Museum will be holding a Garage Sale in May, so why not have a clean out over the Easter break? All donations can be left at the Museum from Wednesday, April 27.A couple of weeks ago Councillor Anna Grosskreutz and the Cultural Heritage and Collections team visited our museum as part of their tour of the hinterland region’s Museums and Heritage sites. We hope this tour gave them a better understanding of the problems most museums etc. face with rising costs and falling visitor numbers. We are totally self funded and with everyday running costs on the rise it is difficult to move forward with new displays but our volunteers do their best.

Musical madman Linsey Pollack will entertain Saturday crowds with his solo Passing Wind show, and Maleny’s Hayden Hack Infusion will create the space to sit back and mellow out in the Taste Maleny stage on Sunday.Street performers will keep the entertainment alive and should parents want some ‘time-out’, Visit www.malenywoodexpo to find out more.

Park at the river’s edge, Mooloolah ValleyI have recently been contacted by a local resident requesting power, barbeque and swing facilities to be incorporated into the park. I’ve sent the request over to the department to be priced, but would love to receive feedback from those who are currently using the park to ascertain what there future needs might be. My office can be contacted on 5441 8043, or you can email me at [email protected]

Mooloolah / LandsboroughI recently spent the day in Mooloolah and Landsborough, meeting with local residents to address various council issues. When I had a minute to catch my breath, I along with my PA, took the opportunity to have a cup of tea at the Thunderbird Café and was delighted to see quite a few people riding their horses through town. As Council embarks on the new Town Plan, special aspects like this need to be incorporated to ensure our lifestyle choices and facilities are retained.Later that day we visited Daryl at the Mooloolah Hardware Store to promote the Flexi-Link service. Along with our Flexi-Link Team, we met some true locals including John and Moya Moore, John Spencer and Angie. This program is the forerunner for more regular bus services to the area, however if the need cannot be established the community will not be considered for additional public transport. This program is being re-assessed in June, so if you don’t use it – you will lose it. Brochures are available at the Hardware store, so please read them and let me know if the service is not currently meeting your transportation needs. I can be contacted on 5441 8043.

Council ClosedThe following are upcoming Council holidays - Friday, April 22 (Good Friday), Saturday, April 23 (Easter Saturday), Monday, April 25 (Anzac Day), and Tuesday, April 26 (in lieu of Easter Monday). Celebrity entrance to high teaAs 90-year-old Mary Hodgson of Mooloolah stepped out of her limousine at Mad Hatters Tea House last Tuesday she was very much the reluctant celebrity. However her two special guests who shared the ride in the back of the stretch limo seemed quite happy to be part of Mary’s special day. The very special High Tea was organised by Mary’s daughter Barb who lives in Darwin so there was plenty of long distance calls between Barb and Sue from Mad Hatters in the last few weeks.

The Indian Pacific from Adelaide to Perth arrives in Kalgoorlie station at around 9.00pm. With or without daylight saving it is still dark so the challenge is to get some good night shots in the time allotted to walk around the old gold mining town before getting back on the train. The Anzac Memorial is close to the station and presents an excellent subject to any photographer. The soft lighting shows up the ‘Soldier on Night Watch’ very subtly against the black of the night. The light coloured fence and flagpoles also present enough contrast to make the picture interestingly effective.Around ANZAC Day this year why not try an evening shot of a similar monument in Glasshouse Country being careful to select

a photographic position for a good silhouette outline.Beerwah Grafx Group meets at Beerwah Library 4.00pm each Thursday.

EASTER SERVICES Good Friday 22nd April 9.00am HC

Easter Sunday 24th April 9.00am HC

Easter means a whole lot of things to a lot of people: family, the long weekend, bunny ears, and chocolate! Yep, Easter is a time to enjoy and celebrate all of these things - but to me - Easter is about freedom. It’s about Jesus’ love for us and the freedom that He loves us with.Love is both an action and a feeling. Saying 'I love you' can mean a lot, but there has to be more than just words in a relationship. Expressing love actions helps keep love alive. Love in action is best demonstrated by the love of God in action:'This is how we know what real love is: Jesus gave his life for us...1 John 3:16'When someone does something good for you, isn’t it true that it feels more special if they do it because they want to rather than being forced to? The more willing and glad, and free that love is given (especially if it costs something) the more amazing it is, and deeper it feels.

This is how it is with Jesus. The depth of His love is found in the freedom of it - the willingness of it, the joy and the eagerness of it.In knowing this, the Easter message becomes so much clearer – because the same freedom that He loved us with; is the same freedom with which He died on the cross and rose from the dead. He was not forced into doing anything that He was not first willing and eager to do. Of all the great things that Easter means, Easter is about freedom. It’s a day to celebrate that Jesus is alive and a day to celebrate the freedom that truth brings.…and it’s also a time to simply enjoy the good things in life that God has given us. So however you choose to spend your Easter and Anzac Day weekend remember to stop for a few moments and thank God for freedom - for family, for the long weekend…and chocolate!p.s. The movies are coming to Glass House! This is the first and most important question borrowers ask when they are thinking about buying property!Pre-approval Before you even start looking for a property you should find out what you might be able to borrow. Under most circumstances, your Smartline Adviser can get loan pre-approval from your lender so you know exactly how much you can borrow and spend.‘Pre-approval’ means that a lender assesses your financial position and lets you know how much they would be prepared to lend you.

You don’t need to see every lender – just your Smartline Adviser, who will guide you through some questions and then research lenders on your behalf. Do be honest about your financial situation and be ready to provide proof, because lenders will conduct credit checks. How does a lender assess me?Lenders vary in how much they will lend, depending on their own policies and your circumstances. That’s why it’s so important to use a professional broker like

Smartline –so you understand all your options.Lenders take into account the ‘estimated’ overall cost of the property (including stamp duty and charges) and how much deposit you have. They then calculate repayments and assess whether you can afford them on your income, using their own inbuilt estimates of household expenditure.

Call Teresa Harrison today. 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098www.smartline.com.au/tharrisonSmartline CL No. 385325

HOW MUCH CAN I BORROW? DIFFERENT LENDERS LEND DIFFERENT AMOUNTS!For example, Jenny and Todd Ransley have a joint income of $105,000 per annum. They have two children and a credit card limit of $8,000 and hope to borrow $500,000 towards their new home.

The 25 lenders on Smartline’s panel would lend the Ransleys a range of different amounts, from approximately $457,000 to $561,000. Some of the lenders would decline the loan, but several are willing to lend more.

Smartline reviewed all the options and highlight the lenders that would view the Ransleys favourably.

First National Real Estate Chief Executive Ray Ellis says full brick homes are increasing in popularity as homeowners recognise their many advantages both for today and for the changing needs of tomorrow.“Full brick homes are a solid investment for homeowners, and in the never-ending quest for sustainable solutions, bricks represent one of the greatest energy efficient building materials available,” Mr Ellis said.“Plus, with the impending carbon tax and escalating energy costs, they offer real means to reduce carbon footprints by homeowners.According to Mr Ellis, research by the University of Newcastle shows a full brick home reduces greenhouse gas emissions with their excellent in-built thermal qualities, which provide superior insulation abilities.”“The natural heat retention properties of bricks

means homes are cooler in summer and warmer in winter,” Mr Ellis said.“During the day unwanted heat is absorbed by the brick and slowly released at night which means the home retains a constant temperature and remains unaffected by external temperature changes.“This reduces the need for the use of artificial temperature controls, like air conditioners and heaters, and can even potentially eliminate their use in times of climate extremes, reducing greenhouse gas emissions as well as rising power bills.“It also maximises interior comfort for those inside the home,” he said.Mr Ellis said a full brick home offers a superior resale value due to its durability and strength, making it a good sound investment at any time.“But home owners can capitalise on their investments in a full brick home well before they even start considering selling it,” Mr Ellis said.“They are low maintenance, don’t require repainting of face brickwork and have the potential of lower heating and cooling bills, so the savings are there to be had from the minute someone starts living there.”Other advantages of a full brick home include:•Natural sound barrier, both from internal

and outside noises, adding to the quality and comfort of living

•Better fire resistance, often resulting in lower insurance rates

•Termite, vermin and pest resistant“A full brick home makes good investment sense, as homeowners learn to take advantage of their many benefits today, and in face of the changes of tomorrow,” Mr Ellis said.

Beerwah Bulldogs Report Contributed by Dean Roberts

Beerwah Under 15 players celebrating their victory on Friday Night

The Beerwah Bulldogs A Grade were so close to registering their first win of the season on Saturday night when they pushed last year’s grand finalist, the Nambour Crushers to an exciting 18-16 game.Reserve Grade and Under 18’s also suffered defeats against the Crushers and will get the Easter break to regroup and come back to take on the Gympie Devils in May.The support the senior teams are getting is great and the club appreciates this, as do the players as we push ahead in our return to the SCGRL 1st Division Competition. Each weekend we will feature a team and providing a game report game and this week it is the Under 15 Beerwah Team, sponsored by Glass House Country Bowls Club.Coach Mal Brough has submitted the following report on Saturday’s Game. The boys put together their best game of the season with a near faultless performance in the first half on Friday night against the well drilled Kawana Dolphins. Every player contributed with 7 try scorers and a magnificent display of goal kicking from Connor Kilkenny. Jack Bobbins, Jake Pearce, Jake Kleinhans and Derek Parascos lead the tackle count whilst Pat Glover, John Grimes and Jake Bobbins had great games in attack. Unfortunately Toby Frame suffered a knee injury and was taken to hospital. Great effort all round, well done boys! Final score 58-22.

The Ewen Maddock Fish Management Inc was formed in May 2010 with the aim of restocking Ewen Maddock Dam with native sports fish. Despite its relatively short history, and limited membership, the Group successfully raised the required funds to purchase and release 29,000 Bass, Silver Perch and Yellowbelly fingerlings into Ewen Maddock Dam in February this year. It intends to replicate this success each year. The Groups AGM will be held on Monday, May 2 at the Mooloolah Valley Sports Club (Mooloolah Connection Road) commencing at 10.00am. The AGM will be followed by a family barbecue and social event at the Ewen Maddock Dam picnic area.A key agenda item which will be voted at the AGM is whether the Group will undertake stocking of Baroon Pocket Dam in addition to Ewen Maddock Dam.The Group is actively seeking new members. If you are interested in the health of the Ewen Maddock and Baroon Pocket Dam Fisheries then please come along. Membership forms will be available at the AGM.For further details please contact the Secretary at [email protected] (phone 0409 897 065) or the President at [email protected] (ph 0428 598 398). Limited information is also available on the Groups website www.ewenmaddock.com.au

Glenview Mooloolah Tennis ClubContributed by Jenny MorrisFixturesThe Summer Sunshine Coast Junior Tennis season has finished and our teams all did well. Our Div 1, Mega Stars, Div 4A, Marvels and Div 4C, Magic all made the semi finals with our Magic team just missing out in the grand final. Well done juniors and we hope you will give it another go next season starting in May. Our Adult Monday night season has started with many interruptions with the weather so we live in hope that the rain goes away soon. We have three teams this season – Div 2, Mungrals – Div 3, Mystics and Div 5, Scuds. Our teams are looking for any women wishing to fill in at times when needed. You don’t have to play every week just when somebody can’t play for one reason or another.NewsVery soon our members will notice some activity around the tennis club as the building our long waited shed will commence. This will make the clubhouse tidier as the shed will house sports and gardening equipment.A working bee will be organised in the near future to jetwash no 2 and 3 courts. If you can help in any way or have any spare time please call Ray on 0438 291 577 and he can organise a time to clean the courts.

Go Green Rainforest Nursery plant of the week

When it comes to wattles one of our favourites is the local Weeping Wattle. It naturally occurs from central NSW through to SE QLD. It grows to approximately 3m – 5m and has a lovely arching habit to its branches. Its leaves stand erect on the branches and this time of year it is covered in masses of perfumed

golden yellow flower balls. This is a great wattle to include in a native garden planting and makes a lovely feature specimen in full sun with good drainage.

If you would like more information on this tree or any other native plants drop in and see Simon or Melissa at Go Green Rainforest Nursery, 2620 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview. Phone 5494 5980. Email: [email protected] Now open 7 days.

Bromeliad Society Inc.Contributed by Bob McLean Phone: 0427 606 240

Glasshouse Country

It is time to have a chat about the largest genera in the Bromeliad family, and one of the most well known. The Tillandsia has over 1,000 species and cultivars, with the majority of the species being epiphytes (not growing in soil), and mostly xerophytic epiphytes (growing in dry conditions). These are characterised by their greyish silver-coloured foliage, due to the numerous fuzzy scales which cover the surface of the leaves. The leaves are often contorted into bizarre shapes. These plants have no centre tank to hold water and many produce little if any root system. There are tank-forming Tillandsia’s, which usually have quite soft foliage in comparison to the xerophytic types with most of these coming from Central America.Xeric tillandsias are the supreme ‘oligotrophs’ (i.e. nutrient scavengers). In nature, they receive little in the way of nutrients; however, they make maximum use of those nutrients that are available. This does not mean a generous fertiliser program is useless. The Tillandsia is a bromeliad that can complement any indoor or outdoor garden display. The flower colour can be pinks,

blue, yellow and of course the range of green and silver-grey foliage which is an all year display. We will have a look at a Tillandsia aeranthos. It is a small plant 10 cm high with about 20 fine, narrow, green leaves, covered with silver-grey scales, which form a neat rosette and is quite stiff. The leaves keep developing in spirals, eventually forming long stems which curve according to light and gravity. The striking flower bracts are bright reddish purple, and the petals are violet blue. The flower will provide a floral display for three to four months. These curious but lovely plants are commonly called the ‘Carnation of the Sky’ in their native countries where they are quite widespread. This is a hardy plant which can take frost and other adverse conditions and is strictly epiphytic. You will be able to see these plants and many other Tillandsias at the Glasshouse Country Sustainability & Garden Expo in Beerwah on May 29, as well as participate in the specialty workshops managing Bromeliads. Check the advertisement in this edition of GCNews for more information, or visit www.glasshousecountryfestival.com.au to see all the details.

What a team!Arthur is 81 years old. He's played golf every day since his retirement 16 years ago. One day he arrives home looking downcast."That's it," he tells his wife "I'm giving up golf. My eyesight has got so bad. Once I've hit the ball I can't see where it went."His wife sympathises. As they sit down, she makes a suggestion: "Why don't you take my brother with you and give it one more try.""That's no good," sighs Arthur. "Your brother is 93 years old. He can't help." "He may be a 93," says

the wife, "but his eyesight is perfect."So the next day, Arthur heads off to the golf course with his brother-in-law. He tees up, takes an almighty swing and squints down the fairway. He turns to the brother-in-law. "Did you see the ball?""Of course I did!" says the brother-in-law. "I have perfect eyesight.""Where did it go?" asks Arthur."Can't remember."Des Holmsquest, Landsborough
