Nearly £10 million is set to be spent on improving and expanding primary schools in North Somerset. The council's Executive has agreed to spend over £9.6 million on expanding and improving six primary-aged and one special school on top of an addition £2 million already committed to expand and create all-through primary schools in three other Weston schools. Ashcombe Primary School in Weston is the largest beneficiary with nearly £5 million being agreed for a new 420-place school by September 2013. The children's centre on site will also be expanded. Locking Primary School is set to expand from 45 to 60 places per year group benefiting from a £850,000 scheme and Ravenswood Special School in Nailsea is to receive £450,000 for refurbishment.

An addition £1.84 million is to be spent on providing an extra 210 places across the Portishead and Pill cluster of schools and Yatton Infant and Junior schools will get an additional 105 places. The Executive also agreed to create primary schools at Hillside and Mendip Green First Schools and at St Martin's Junior School. Hillside will increase to a 210 place primary with Mendip Green and St Martins being able to each accommodate up to 630 pupils. The new primary schools will come into effect from September this year. Cllr Jeremy Blatchford, North Somerset Council's executive member for children and young people's services said this was great news especially at a time when councils were having to cut their spending by a third.

CHECK YOUR PENSION

Something to sayThen write to us us at the Weston and Worle

You never know we might even print it

If you took out a pension in the 1980s or early 1990sthen you may be in for a surprise; as, back then, some pension annuities had a ‘guaranteed annuity rate’.You will not find these in every pension, but it is worth getting out your policy to check.

With low interest rates and a longer life expectancy, your annual payment will only be about 5.9% of youryour annual payment will only be about 5.9% of yourtotal pension pot. But you may find in the small printof your policy that your annuity was guaranteedup to a certain level, which could mean the differenceof you getting the 5.9%; or nearly double that if yourpension has a guarantee.

If you no longer have the pension documents thencontact your pension company and ask them for a contact your pension company and ask them for a copy. If you are not sure, then get an adviser tocheck them.

Dear Editor

What exciting times there are ahead of us inWeston. I was lucky enough to attend the recentWeston Showcase event at The WinterGardens, where I was able to learn about all thenew development about to take place. I alwaysthought Weston was a good place to be inbusiness, but soon, I believe, it will be hard tobeat!Certainly, at the event, there was a lot of positiveand forward thinking. We can, I’m sure, all listthings wrong with our town but, with an upbeatmessage and a united front, I am sure we canattract more business into Weston tocomplement and help grow existing business. We just need to make sure we are in a positionand ready to take advantage of it.

It’s “Go” for Weston’s roadimprovementsFollowing a successful bid for Government funding,North Somerset Council has released the timetable forthe biggest programme of road improvements thetown has seen in years.Travellers will have already noticed the blue barrier inplace on the roundabout at Junction 21 of the M5. Thisis part of the preparatory work to exclude wildlife fromthe area, which includes the relocation of a family ofbadgers. The main works on all the projects, known collectively

as The WestonPackage, is scheduledto commence inOctober. The scheme whichwill probably be ofmost interest is theremodelling ofJunction 21, whichwill go some way torelieving the queueswhich have blightedthe morning andevening rush hours.

This scheme will consist of:Creating three lanes around the roundaboutInstalling traffic lights on the northbound off slip

Adding a third lane on the approach to theroundabout from the southbound off slip to allowfor a dedicated filter lane towards BristolAdding traffic signals at the junction of SomersetAvenue and the slip road from St Georges, andcreating a dedicated filter lane onto thenorthbound M5.

The works on Junction 21 are set to last 12 months.

Elsewhere, work will beginon creating a dualcarriageway past Dunelm;creating a car park andbus interchange on thesouth side of Worlestation, together with

improvements to the existing car park; enlarging thebus terminus at Queensway and installing a bus lanepast the traffic lights at Morrison’s. There will also bea “bus gate” at the side of McDonalds at Worle to allowbuses to bypass the busy junction by the courts -speeding up bus travel and allowing easy access to thenew bus interchange at Worle station.

In addition to the publicly-funded Weston Package, construction is due to start on a new road across theold airfield, which will allow work to begin on new

Chamber NewsFollowing a successful campaign, with members of Weston’sChamber of Commerce lobbyingNorth Somerset Council, plans, which would have seen parking feesin Weston’s car parks increased, have been dropped. President, GailParsons, declared,”This is a victoryfor common sense. Whilst werealise the council needs to raiserevenue, this is not the way to doit. Had the increases gone ahead, itwould have put people off visitingthe town.”

The April meeting of the Chamberwill include a presentation on a

privately-funded scheme to createa barrage across the Severn. DrRoger Falconer, from theconsortium Corlan Hafren, willoutline the plans. Also speaking willbe Dr Andrew Tyler, of Bristol-based Marine Current Turbines, who will explain the alternativetechnologies they offer to createpower from the sea. commercial premises and homes. Included in the plansis a new 80 room hotel and restaurant, and a new basefor the North Somerset Enterprise Agency which willinclude affordable office space for start-up businesses.

President of Weston Chamber of Commerce, GailParsons said, “We are very pleased that these worksare finally going ahead. The current state of our roadshas been seen as a barrier to visitors and employmentopportunities. The combination of theseimprovements and the planned development of theairfield will serve to make Weston a good place to befor new and existing businesses.”

In other transport news, local MP’s are calling for thelocal rail franchise, which is due for renewal in 2013,to include a requirement to provide a minimum half-hourly service to Bristol, and a commitment to re-openthe rail line from Portishead to Bristol

Help sought for major newevent in WestonOrganisers of the first National Remote Control andModel Jamboree are seeking the support of localclubs and and societies to help plan the programme.Planned for the 1 - 4 November 2012, Weston ArtsSocial Enterprise (WASE) hopes the event will attractpeople from across the country and help boost tourismin the town in what is, traditionally, a quiet time.

WASE Director, Terry Gilbert, said, “The whole reasonwhy WASE exists is to raise the profile of the townthrough events such as this, with the aim of putting“Heads on Beds” and supporting local businessthrough the leaner months of the year. We know thatremote control vehicles and models is big business andthere is an annual event at Shepton Mallet toshowcase these hobbies, but we want to put more ofan emphasis on competition at our event.”

“The committee is also keen to get the associations, schools and colleges involved by building models thatcan compete in the events. However, as we don’t knowmuch about modelling and remote control vehicles,we need to get the enthusiasts involved in helping usmake the event as exciting as possible.”

As well as static displays and trade stands, plannedevents include:

Land speed trialsWater speed trialsMotor racingAerial slalom racingMini-enduroRobot Wars

Starting your own business this year?

There are tentative signs that we may be gradually pulling out of recession. The good andsurprising news is that we are seeing a number of people starting their own business across the

region. There is some evidence to suggest that the recession has been the final catalyst for some totake the plunge and finally go it alone. Good luck to everybody who is doing that – there can befewer finer things in life than being able to control your own destiny!

The good news for anybody who is starting up is that it is generally fairly straightforward. One ofyour early considerations will be your business structure: Whether to start as a sole trader, apartnership or to set up a Limited Company. There are advantages and disadvantages to all of these, but forward planning and an understanding of the tax rules may enable you to plan in advance howto minimise your tax liabilities. Starting your business as a sole trader and changing your legalstructure to a Limited Company once you have developed your business can bring some significanttax benefits, for example.

The costs involved in setting up as a sole trader or partnership are negligible, and the costs involvedin setting up a Limited Company are relatively small. We would always advise you to take professionaladvice before setting up a company however, as it is quite easy to end up paying for two sets ofaccounts in your first year, rather than just one! We always charge clients cost price for setting upa Limited Company.

For those who are look ing at star t ingthe i r own business, or those who arejust looking for bet ter va lue; some ofthe features of a standard package withus inc lude: Fixed price fees for the year, payable monthly. On-going, unlimited phone, email and face to
