London & North Eastern Railway Class C7 Atlantic No.2200 at Croft Spa (South of Darlington). Editors Comment: With regard to the above photograph, on close inspection I have identified the leading Pullman car as a 12 wheel, and those cars that can be seen are wooden bodied. Alas no date was detailed with the photograph. My thoughts as to a date being between 1923 & 1928. The train being the Newcastle working of the ‘Harrogate Pullman’ which commenced on July 9th 1923 between Kings Cross to Newcastle. On July 12th 1925 the ‘Harrogate Pullman’ was extended from Newcastle to Edinburgh. On July 9th 1928 the then new all steel cars were introduced and the service extended from Edinburgh to Glasgow and the service renamed ‘Queen of Scots Pullman’.

CAR No.79.

In early January I was advised the Car No.79 had been taken out of operational service and was within the Carriage & Wagon workshop at Pickering for some much needed attention. The windows which at that time (January) were being removed for resealing and all the saloon seating has been removed and will be re-upholsted. With the large saloon stripped out and the ceiling is being removed, as the main problem relates to the roof leaking, it will need major repair and also new gutters fitted. The good news is that job is to be done properly, no quick fix and may take twelve months which means the Pullman operation has one car which is also the guards brake for this period. A replacement carriage has been added to the Pullman train consist, this being ‘Teak Brake No.43567. External work has commenced on the body side and roof, with most of the windows removed. Currently it looks as if the car roof will need a complete replacement with its hundreds of rivets. Has any reader drawings for a riveted Met Cam roof?

André Freeman Commercial Manager Kent & East Sussex Railway Co. Ltd.

The Wealden Pullman. The 2016 Wealden Pullman season was once again well patronised and, in a new venture for the K&ESR, a Christmas Day Luncheon service operated. This, like the traditional New Year’s Eve service, sold out very quickly. Substantial donations were received on these two services towards the ongoing restoration of ‘ARIES’, which will be entering the C&W works on 18th March for the next phase of restoration. The K&ESR based 4253 Locomotive Company are working with the ARIES team in the production of various non-ferrous parts required for ARIES, including the manufacture of table lamps. Modern methods of pattern making have revolutionised the timescales for such work and enabled significant cost savings. BARBARA has received her usual winter maintenance together with a partial repaint, complete with signwriting by Wealden Pullman Chef Meg Gooch. The life expired kitchen ceiling in DIANA has also been replaced and extract fans overhauled. With 60% of 2017 Wealden Pullman season services already fully booked, we look forward to another positive and productive year!

‘Bricks Britannia’ at the Kent & East Sussex Railway Tenterden Station.

©Matthew Wells. This exhibition of stunning models, created solely from LEGO bricks, charts the history of Britain from the Neolithic Stonehenge through to the supersonic age of Concorde. Featuring over 30 models created by Bright Bricks (as featured in Channel 4’s Inside Lego at Christmas) and using hundreds of thousands of LEGO bricks, Bricks Britannia opens on April 1st at Tenterden Town Station.

©Matthew Wells. The centrepiece of this amazing exhibition is an eight metre long model of Flying Scotsman, the world’s most famous steam locomotive, and three Pullman cars! There's also an opportunity to join our workshops where both young, and young at heart, can build their very own LEGO steam locomotive and Pullman carriage. These are exclusive to the K&ESR and available at the special price of just £10 when booking online. The exhibition is FREE to K&ESR ticket holders

The 5BEL Trust has seen its hopes to return the Brighton Belle to service in the same year that The Flying Scotsman finally re-emerged on the mainline dashed. After a frustrating year be-set by problems with the complex re-wiring of the motor thirds, the Trust reluctantly took the decision to leave its home at Barrow Hill, a process which cost almost six months of productive activity.

The Trust paid fulsome tribute to the ground-breaking work carried out by Rampart Engineering. “They were able to achieve what everyone said was impossible and Paul Ramsden has created a national centre of excellence for heritage railway restoration at Barrow Hill. Our problem with hitting our stretching targets has been one of capacity – the ability to work on at least four cars at the same time.”

DORIS at W.H.Davis Workshop at Shirebrook on November 22nd 2016. The new home for the project is at W H Davis at Shirebrook, where all of the Belle cars now sit in a vast building akin to an aircraft hangar, with all components and spares sat adjacent to each car in racked out shipping containers. The project has suddenly moved up a gear by virtue of the massive space available, finally allowing the application of lean manufacturing techniques to the project with all the assets to hand instead of being stored at multiple locations throughout the Chesterfield area. A game changer… The professionalism of the W H Davis management team has allowed an excellent working relationship to be quickly established and the team has access to a large in-house engineering resource to accelerate completion of the project. Problems with the complex wiring systems apart, this final phase is essentially a production line; all of the engineering challenges have been fully resolved and the conditions set by the Rail Regulator are being met.

After re-launching a four car Belle unit, the speed of the completion of final two cars will be a simple product of the rate at which funding can be pulled in. The Trust is crossing its fingers that mainline testing can be completed by the end of the year, allowing excursions to be run by Spring 2018.

MYSTERY PHOTOGRAPHS - The following responses (italics) have been received from Dirk Frielingsdorf.. In response to Rob Bayliff requests for assistance with the identification of two photographs.

©Major W.E.Burke/Mr C. Vigor Collection.

It shows a six axle Diner of the former "DESG" (Deutsche Eisenbahn Speisewagen Gesellschaft - German Railway Dining Car Company), a CIWL subsidiary in Prussia founded on December 8th, 1896. In the first world war the company was (not voluntarily) overtaken in 1916 by the new MITROPA. They had teak bodied Diners, which were very similar to the CIWL Diners of that time. The car in the photograph is probably out of the batch "DESG No. 57-88" built in three batches in 1907 and 1908 by Van der Zypen and Charlier, Cologne, which were later run by MITROPA. A Plan and a Fhotograph can seen within the German book "Speisewagen in Deutschland, Albert Mühl, Eisenbahn Kurier Verlag 1994" pages 96 and 102. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

©Major W.E.Burke/Mr C. Vigor Collection. The sleeper beside the London Midland Scottish Third Class Kitchen/Dining Car No. 117 doesn't show the word "ANONYME", I think. It might be part of the Greek title of the company. Refer to the photograph of the model on the next page. This car might has been part of the pre-war Greek CIWL car allocation.

PULLMAN & CIWL NEWS January & February 2017; Edition No. 34. Mystery Photographs {Page 57 of 61}: BUFFET CAR, THE BRIGHTON BELLE.

R.J.E. Bayliff.

At a glance and seizing on the naming, you might be excused for thinking the subject of the photograph was a Pullman running on the LB&SCR at the turn of the 19th century! It was taken during 1948 by Major W. E. Burke, RE whilst serving as Railway Transport Officer at Villach, Austria. He was responsible for the naming of the carriage (which was not unlike the similar nostalgic naming of carriages used on the Royal Engineers leave and duty train between Berlin-Charlottenburg and Bad Oyenhausen from August 2nd 1945 after public houses around Longmoor, home to the army's training railway for soldiers on railway construction and operations). This was done without the sanction of the Colonel, who was livid at such levity and ordered immediate obliteration. As well as the classification and naming on the waist, the official inscription ‘British Military Train, Austria’ appears centrally above the windows on the cantrail. Correspondents in Germany have provided information, Paul Scheller narrowing it down to one of three coaches, Dirk Freilingsdorf providing additional information. The Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits (CIWL) established a subsidiary in Prussia on 08 December 1896: the Deutsche Eisenbahn-Speisewagen-Gesellschaft (DSEG). In 1916, the Mitteleuropäische Schlafwagen- und Speisewagen Aktiengesellschaft (Mitropa) was founded by the railway companies of Germany and Austria-Hungary, taking over involuntarily discontinued CIWL services in 1917. In January 1917 Mitropa bought 116 DESG restaurant cars which included 51 six-axle teak-bodied coaches built by van der Zypen & Charlier in Cöln-Deutz: numbers 51- 56, built 1906; 57 – 60, built 1907; and 61 – 88, built between 1907 – 1909. They were renumbered 751 - 788. From 1928 they were classified WR6ü. By 1948, all but four of these Mitropa ex-DESG coaches were either lost, damaged, destroyed, or remaining in Eastern Europe or the Russian Occupation Zone of Germany. The remaining four; numbers 754, 758, 782, 783; in April 1945 were in use or at respectively by the Reichsbahnzentralamt as 19828 Oppeln, at Hansestadt Hamburg –Altona, at Traben Trarbach, and by the Reichsführer SS. 754 can be excluded as Mitropa restaurant cars as hired by the RZA renumbered 198xx Oppeln / Breslau were rebuilt as Third Class coaches, losing their kitchens and tables. Thus 758, 782, or 783 could be BUFFET CAR, THE BRIGHTON BELLE. For completeness; in 1958 three of the coaches were stores vans: 754 at München, 758 at Köln, 782 at Dortmund; 783 in 1955 being a workshop van in Frankfurt.

CIWL Lease Query. Dirk Frielingsdorf in response to Mike Newport request for assistance in the mystery of the works plate.

You will note that the date is chiselled off my plate, I understand that this was done a lot by CIWL to hide the true age of cars. “It is not the "hiding" of the true age of the cars. This was often done, when cars get a new technical approval after major conversions or modernizations. The year of the modernization was of course not put on the builder’s plate, but recorded within the technical book each car had”. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mike Newport - February 27th 2017. A little more information on my query about whether the CIWL Baggage Cars were leased throughout their operational life or not. I recently re-visited Metro-Cammell album 49 at the Birmingham Central Library with a view to getting a close up of the rectangular plate that appeared to be on the solebar of the Baggage Cars directly below the raised portion of the roof. I’m afraid the writing on the plate is not clear but it can be seen to be the same layout as the plate I recently purchased. So it would seem at least some of these plates remained on the solebars of these vans for their entire life. Whether the vans remained leased for their entire life remains unanswered. I suspect we’ll never know!

For many of us the name Orient Express conjures up memories of Hercule Poirot solving another murder mystery in Murder on the Orient Express and James Bond’s brutal punch-up with the Russian agent Grant in From Russia with Love. That’s just two of the most well-known references to this iconic train which has featured many times in film and television, from documentaries (Whickers World) to magic shows (Mystery on the Orient Express - David Copperfield), from sit-coms (Minder on the Orient Express) to science fiction (Dr Who and Star Trek), from children’s’ cartoons (Dangermouse and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) to TV soaps (Eastenders). However, it was another TV connection that brought about the extraordinary record-breaking journey in 1988 of the ‘Orient Express’ from Paris to Hong Kong. That year, Japan's Fuji Television staged an extravagant publicity stunt for its 30th anniversary - an attempt on the world’s longest railway journey from Paris to Hong Kong via the Soviet Union, and China. After arrival in Hong Kong the train would be shipped to Japan where it would undertake a number of publicity trips. Apparently, the Japanese sponsors originally approached James Sherwood for the use of his VSOE (Venice Simplon Orient Express) but he turned them down as the train was already fully booked with its own planned schedules. Other sources indicate that it was the idea of Albert Glatt, the former president of the Swiss tour operator Intraflug which owned and operated the ‘Nostalgic Orient Express’ train in the early eighties. Glatt had previously arranged Trans-Siberian specials in 1979 and 1981 using green Soviet RIC (International Coach Regulations) sleeping cars. His ambition was to organise similar journeys using his own historic CIWL cars that he had acquired over the years. This was his big opportunity and he clinched the deal with the Japanese sponsors.

There were many difficulties in trying to make the 15,000km journey, the foremost being dealing with the authorities in all of the countries involved to clear the tracks and provide motive power. A West German travel official is reported to have said that it had taken six months of negotiation with the Chinese to gain permission for the train to pass through the PRC (Peoples’ Republic of China). Another major consideration in the planning was the difference between European and Russian track gauges. Broad Gauge bogies (1524mm) were especially made and delivered to the Polish-Soviet border at Brest, where they were exchanged for the long journey through the vastness of Russia. There already existed at the Polish-Soviet border three bogie changing stations for passenger coaches equipped with jacks to lift the coach bodies. Several coaches could be lifted at any one time. A winch pulled out the existing bogies; the new bogies were pushed in the other side and the body lowered again. The full ‘Orient Express’ bogie exchange was completed in just four hours, and the train was ready to depart on the Broad Gauge side of Brest Station, the start of the Soviet Rail network. The Standard Gauge bogies made the journey as well, loaded on wagons and taken to the Chinese border where the whole process was repeated in reverse, China sharing Europe’s 1435mm standard gauge. After arriving in Hong Kong it would take two weeks to load the train onto a ship at the nearby cargo port so that it could be taken to Japan. In Japan the bogie changing process would take place again (Japan’s Cape Gauge – 1067mm) in preparation for the train’s three-month schedule of promotional journeys for Fuji Television before finally being shipped back to Europe. During its’ visit to Japan, the CIWL set would be double-ended by a pair of Japanese coaches. These coaches would be fitted with European standard buffers and link couplings at one end, and Japanese couplers at the other end. This would enable the train to be moved by Japanese locomotives. Tickets were limited to ninety but at $20,000 per head ($40,000 today) only sixty were purchased! Included in the price was an exclusive and varied program, including lavish and exclusive cultural concerts in Berlin, Warsaw, and Moscow. Supervised by the service crew of the French President, the passengers dined on the cuisine of the country that they were traveling through. The food was the very best and coaches numbered 4158 and 4149 carried the dignified atmosphere of Pullman dining cars. A few pre-dinner drinks could be had in coach number 4164, the bar and saloon car. One would have thought that International superstars would have snapped up the opportunity to be part of this unique trip, but Anna Nicholas of The Guiness Book of Records in her memoirs says that she didn’t recognize anyone; the majority of the passengers being Japanese.

On the morning of September 6, 1988, the 18,000km record-breaking trip of the ‘Orient-Express’ began in Zurich HB. After changing motive power, the sixteen car train D27241 headed by SNCF 230 G 353 (4-6-0 steam loco) and SNCF BB 22399 (B-B 22000 class electric loco) departed Paris Gare de Lyon for the epic journey stopping at historic cities such as Berlin, Warsaw, Moscow and Peking and finally arriving in Hong Kong. At precisely 2.45pm on 26th September the train drew into the station at Hong Kong Kowloon Station welcomed by plenty of Chinese and Japanese officials, several Miss Hong Kong runners-up, the Hong Kong Police Band and Norris McWhirter and Anna Nicholas of The Guiness Book of Records to present a certificate to each passenger (1988 Guiness Book of Records)! After two weeks loading, the train continued by ship to Hiroshima, on to Sapporo, Tokyo and Kobe and eventually its sea voyage back to Antwerp.

Train Consist. There are a couple of sources on the Internet giving details of the train consist that seem to agree in terms of the rolling stock. However, it has been tricky to determine the motive power for the whole journey. Table 1 - Details the rolling stock: -

Creating the train in N Gauge. The inspiration for putting this article together was my purchase of the Paris Hong Kong 1988 CIWL Orient Express Wagons Lits 8 coach pack K23215-1 manufactured by Kato Lemke. At the time I considered the complete 15 coach set (Kato 23215), but as I haven’t a large enough layout to run the complete train, the consist of the 8 coach set gave an acceptable representation of the full train. I also wanted all of the coaches with lighting, which if I had purchased the 15 coach set, would have stretched my budget too far! Incidentally the second coach pack K23215-2 contains the remaining seven CIWL coaches.

Just out of interest, the sets were originally released in Japan in 2008 as 10-561 and 10-562. The first set included five CIWL cars of the prototype train and the two Japanese end cars; the second set included a further six CIWL cars that made up the prototype. I know what you’re thinking – that’s only eleven CIWL cars compared to the fifteen listed in Table 1.

Page 56: March & April 2017 Edition No.35.

I have tried to determine why this is the case, but information on the Internet regarding this train’s trip to Japan is very limited. It has been suggested, and Kato’s sets would back this up, that not all of the coaches were shipped over to Japan. (Perhaps some of our Japanese layout modellers may be able to confirm this?) The 2014 European release (K23215/-1/-2) as mentioned above is a true representation of the 1988 prototype CIWL consist with all of the car types covered - sleepers (LX & YT) Pullman, Restaurant, Service/Shower, Saloon Bar and Baggage. The quality of the Kato models is exceptional. Mouldings are crisp and the detailing of door handles and windows is outstanding. The lettering and CIWL badge is so good, that through an eyeglass one can read the lettering in the logo. Unlike the early Lima CIWL cars, the Kato models have detailed interiors. The Pullman saloon car is supplied with table lamps that light up as standard, and the other cars (in my set) have been fitted with the Kato lighting kit that gives a general level of lighting to each car. I’m pleased with the overall effect of the lighting (which just happened to impress the family as well, both young and old). The cars have been modelled in 1:160 scale for the European market and are fitted with Rapido connectors. A nice touch at both ends of the cars is the coach corridor connector that is long enough to give quite an acceptable close coupling effect and doesn’t even derail the coaches on my Peco No 1 radius curves! It’s worth mentioning that both Rivaossi (Italy) and Lima (Italy) produced a number of variants of CIWL coaches. Both of these manufacturers advertised their models as 1:160, but measuring my Lima Pullman Car (13.5cm) it comes out 1.0 cm shorter than the Kato Pullman (14.5cm). Converting these measurements to full size, the Kato is closer to the prototype (23.45m). Although I don’t have any Rivarossi CIWL cars myself, I believe that the Pullman is the same length as the Kato (14.5cm). However, if you’re planning on attempting to recreate the 1988 Paris to Hong Kong ‘Orient Express’ with Rivarossi or Lima, even if you can find similar cars in the market-place (e-bay is a good source), to make up an 8-car set such as the Kato, it’s going to set you back around £250.00 if you’re lucky! The Kato 8-car set is still available (December 2016) at less than £170.00. That £70.00 saving goes a long way towards a new Hobbytrain DB 110 locomotive, or a Brawa DR 130 Class; it’s a no-brainer! I’ve noticed that there have been a few bloggers who, like me, have struggled to identify and source a locomotive that headed up this very special train. After much searching I believe that I have come up with a fairly comprehensive (although not complete) list of the motive power used on the journey (see Table 2). Hence, there are a number of options depending on how you approach your modelling and railway operation. I opted for a new DB Class 110 locomotive (Hobbytrain/Lemke H2830) that headed the prototype through Germany. However on my GWR (Grandpa’s Wonderful Railway) layout it tends to visit the ‘West Country’ here in England quite often!

If you’re a luxury train enthusiast or, just appreciate fine railway models, I would thoroughly recommend purchasing one of the Kato sets. If your budget runs to the full 15 car set, go on, spoil yourself! That is, if you can track down these much sought after sets!!

My thanks to Christian Lemke of Lemke GmbH for his help and permission to use photographs and information provided in the Kato Lemke brochure that accompanied the set.

British Sleeping Cars for the Continent - Extract - The Engineer - December 22nd 1922. Some railway coaches of unusual interest to British engineers, which have just been put into service by the International Sleeping Car Company on the run from Calais to the Riviera via Paris, are illustrated by the accompanying half tone engravings and line drawing. The new cars, built at Leeds Forge Company Ltd.

Represent a noteworthy advance in sleeping car construction, on account of the extensive use of steel castings in the construction of the underframes. Large steel castings are employed at each in order to reduce the number of small parts which would otherwise be required to carry the many fittings necessary on a car, that must be capable of being coupled with the rolling stock of so many European countries.

These castings were made in America to the designs of the Leeds Forge Company, approved by the Wagon-Lits Company. The bogie frame is also a single steel casting, so designed that the numerous separate lugs and brackets generally required for carrying the brake gear, &c., have been dispensed with. The pin holes in this casting are provided with hard steel bushes. The body framework is of steel throughout, built up on pressed steel pillars, and a special quality of ¼”. Steel sheets made by Lysaght’s has been used for plating the sides. The rivets are all countersunk on the outside. I putting the coaches together complete sides and roofs are built on jigs and assembled as units, and a specially contrived framework used for lifting these large flimsy units from the jigs and lowering them on the underframes. As will be seen from the accompanying photographs of the interior, the finish is of the very highest class, made in panels or sections to jigs, and is interchangeable.

Page 59: March & April 2017 Edition No.35.

The floors are made of key flooring steel sheets covered with composition, over which there is laid felt, cork linoleum and carpet. The seats are upholstered in velvet. The coaches each carry sixteen passengers and comprise eight single-berth compartments and four double-berth compartments. Six of the single-berth compartments are provided with communicating doors, which can be locked from either side. The first coaches placed in service by the International Sleeping Car Company had four berths in each compartment; but since they were superseded, each compartment has been provided with single-berth compartments. When one considers the length of run for which these cars are used and the fact that many of the travellers are business men travelling alone, who wish to make use of much of the time spent on the journey on their private business affairs, the great advantage of single-berth compartments is evident. Dressing rooms with washing facilities are arranged between the two-berth compartments. Each single-berth compartment is provided with a wash-basin cabinet containing a tip-up wash-basin supplied with hot and cold water. The cars have been built to the designs of the Leeds Forge Company as approved by M.Doassans, chief engineer of the International Sleeping Car Company, and to his inspection, carried out under the supervision of M.Jault, agent réceptionaire, from whom the builders have received considerable assistance.

Out of the forty cars ordered thirty-two have been delivered, and several are being used for the P. and O. express Calais to Marseilles, but the service is now being extended to Calais-Mediterranean express, and in order to inaugurate this service two special trains were run by the International Sleeping Car Company last Saturday from Calais and Paris respectively.

No special efforts were made to establish records, though the trains travelled throughout the run at speeds higher than is usual for this service. The guests were all much impressed by the comfort of the new cars and by the easy running of the vehicles, especially over the notoriously uneven track close to Calais. The following information as detailed within ‘History of Trains De Luxe’ - G.Behrend - 1977. Allocated Nos.2641 to 2680. Allocated to the Bombay Express Nos.2641 to 2646. Allocated to the Calais-Méditérranée Express Nos.2649 to 2677.

Tail Lamp. Without the contributions news, updates, articles and images from the contributors within this edition, rest assured this newsletter would not have been published. My thanks to all the contributors for taking the time to collate and then forward their contributions. It is Tuesday morning (28th) in the North East of England, as I put the finishing touches to this edition. looking out of the window it is a bright and crisp, and the current temperature outside is a mere 0o. But we have Spring and then Summer to look forward to, and the preserved railway lines around the United Kingdom will shortly commence their 2017 services. Within the 2017 scheduled services will come Wine and Dine services, some will include the use of original Pullman cars that have been saved and restored to their original opulence. Each of these preserved Pullman cars will just like the Forth Bridge require care and maintenance and every so often be taken out of service for major restoration and some cost. So by purchasing the ticket to partake as a passenger on the preserved railway’s Wine and Dine service, you will have a memorable meal with or without wine, and were else can you enjoy the passing countryside with wisps of white steam drifting past the window and know your ticket price is helping to maintain for the future unique catering service and vehicles.
